Family Of Little Girl Battling Cancer Thank Kieran Donaghy For Kindness

.

THE family of a little girl who needs urgent treatment to battle an aggressive cancer have thanked a Kerry GAA legend for his kindness.

On Thursday last, September 12, Kieran Donaghy paid a visit to the Cork home of little Chloe Jenkins who is currently battling Neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive child cancer.

The purpose of Kieran Donaghy’s visit was to first of all meet Chloe and her parents after the Kerry great made an initial call for the public’s help to raise funds for  the ‘Chloe’s Journey’ GoFundMe page via a video appeal on social media just over two weeks ago.

Continued below…

.

Kieran also wanted to launch a further video appeal by asking all sports fans and indeed the public at large to make the minimum GoFundMe donation of just €5 to help Chloe receive the care and treatment that she needs.

Kieran also announced that he would be donating his own Sky Sports TV appearance fee for the replay weekend directly to Chloe’s Journey.

Mum Deborah (from Killorglin) said: “It was just so wonderful of Kieran to take the time to come and visit Chloe and to spend time with her. Chloe took to Kieran right away and within minutes she was showing him her toys.

He threw himself down on the floor beside her & just made such a fuss of her – she absolutely loved seeing him and it gave us such a lift to have him here. I just want to thank him for everything he has done.”

Kieran’s visit was particularly timely as Chloe’s parents had just received the news from Crumlin Children’s Hospital that surgery was to be scheduled for later this week.

Continued below…

.

Chloe’s tumour is wrapped around many vital organs and major blood vessels. Her surgery comes with a whole host of complications.

Chloe’s left kidney and possible her spleen will have to be removed and the surgeons will do what they can after that to remove as much of the cancer as possible. It all depends on how long Chloe can stay under anaesthetic.

Dad Gareth (from Dublin) added: “We were over the moon to welcome Kieran and for him to meet Chloe in person. He was so brilliant with his time and with Chloe, the two of them even had a game of hide and seek!  Kieran has shown great compassion for Chloe and for what she’s going through in her battle against Neuroblastoma – we really can’t thank him enough for all his efforts and for his own amazing gesture to help Chloe.”

Kieran stated: “I was just so moved by the battle that Chloe is facing that I wanted to help. As a parent myself, I can’t imagine what Gareth and Deborah are going through.  Chloe is such a wonderful little child, so full of fun and with a laugh that is absolutely contagious. It’s obvious to me that while she may be small, she is a warrior – despite what she’s going through she still has the biggest smile, she is an inspiration.

I wanted to help launch the fundraising appeal and raise awareness. Once again, I’d just like to call on the public at large to help if they can at all, by making the minimum GoFundMe donation of just€5 to Chloe’s Journey. It only takes 2 minutes to donate online but the difference your donation will make will be huge.”

Further information on Chloe’s Journey can be found at:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/dhqrw-chloes-journey. All video appeals featuring Kieran Donaghy can be viewed in full at Chloe’s Journey Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/chloesjourney2019/

Kieran Donaghy Joins ‘Off The Ball’ Team For GAA Coverage

.

KIERAN Donaghy has joined Newstalk’s ‘Off The Ball’ team to talk GAA for the coming season.

The former Kerry star was announced as their new ‘signing’ on the show tonight. Kieran has been sporadically applying his punditry skills in the past, but listeners to the excellent ‘Off The Ball’ show will be hearing a lot more of him in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Kieran managed to get his work phone back after leaving it in Dubai recently. He appealed for someone to try get it back in the country and Enda Lynch and Michelle O’Donoghue came through for him.

WATCH: Kieran’s A Star As Always On ‘The Late Late Show’

.
Kieran Donaghy on The Late Late Show.

SURE he’s an ‘oul pro at this craic by now!

Kieran Donaghy made another appearance last night on The Late Late Show and was his usual charming self in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers.

The 35-year-old Rockie announced his retirement from the Kerry team last week and he discussed this and much more with host Ryan Tubridy, while wife Hilary and sister Sarah looked on in the audience.

First of all he explained the reason he wrote a poem to announce his retirement.

He said poetry ran in the family and it was a way of expressing something passionate, which was apt in this case because he wanted to express his gratitude to the people of Kerry for getting the chance to represent his county for the past 14 years.

Continued below…

.

Ryan asked him to read a few verses of it and Kieran said rather apprehensively “you’re asking a person with dyslexia to read live on TV so this could go any way!” before reciting it with aplomb.

He spoke about his brother Conor’s wedding in Spain next Friday and his predicament of flying back on Saturday morning for Austin Stacks championship game in Tralee against Dingle. He’ll then fly back on Sunday for the rest of his family holiday.

He said Conor isn’t expecting much from Kieran’s best man’s speech as he’ll have to do it without having a drink!

Kieran also spoke of the women in his life; mother Deirdre, wife Hilary and daughters Lola Rose and Indie. He said he was, in a way, raised by women and his mother did so much for him and his siblings.

“I got a lot of my people skills from watching her and how she interacted with other people. She always had a big thing when we were young that ‘it was nice to be nice’. That’s something that stuck with us from the start,” he said.

He said Deirdre did not have an easy time of it with him.

“No, it wasn’t easy. I struggled in school — messing, standing out in the hall, kicked out of class. A lot of that stuff going on and not a lot of As coming through the door.”

However, Kieran said with his brother and sister doing so well she can now sit down at nighttime and  be happy that she did a great job with the three of them.

Kieran also spoke about how “unbelievable” his wife Hilary is as a mother and friend. Hilary said his retirement is just a new chapter in their lives and one thing she won’t miss is hearing the abuse he got from the stands.

He spoke of his love for his daughters and how he had been looking forward to becoming a dad and  being there for them when they needed him.

As for his future, he might combine a bit of punditry and coaching. He said in the long term he’d like manage Stacks and later Kerry, but he has a lot of work to do before then.

All through the interview he was his relaxed and charming self. The future looks bright for our ‘Star’. See the full interview here…

Twitter Was Full Of Tributes For Kieran Donaghy

.

WITH retirements come tributes and the sporting world was very busy today dishing them out to a Kerry legend.

Here’s what people from all walks of life were tweeting about Kieran Donaghy’s retirement from the Kerry team…

WATCH: Seven Milestone Games Where Donaghy Was A ‘Star’

.
Legends…Ogie Moran and Kieran Donaghy celebrate after Kerry beat Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final replay in 2014. Photo by Dermot Crean

It’s a tough job picking highlights from the great Kieran Donaghy’s career in green and gold.

He transformed Kerry’s fortunes in 2006, bagged two goals in the 2007 final, gave a stirring display in their loss to Dublin in 2011, saved their season in 2014 and supplied the next generation with his lay-off to David Clifford in the Monaghan game this year.

Here’s a selection of milestone games for the big man…

1. The arrival of ‘the new Bomber’…

Jack O’Connor took a gamble by naming Donaghy in the full-forward line in an All-Ireland qualifier against Longford, but boy did it pay off!

Kerry won 4-11 to 1-11 on that sunny July day in Killarney with Eoin Brosnan bagging three goals, but all everyone could talk about coming away was Kieran Donaghy and, at the time, fanciful talk of how he could be the ‘new Bomber’.

Continued below…

.

2. The Armagh goal (2006)…

“Who’s crying now baby?” It was this iconic goal in the All-Ireland quarter-final that was a seismic moment for Kerry football.

Armagh had broken Kerry hearts four years earlier and were favourites to beat Kerry, but Donaghy’s fire burnt the orchard down…

3. A Mayo mauling…

Kerry already were off to a blistering start when this happened in the eighth minute of the All-Ireland final of 2006. Even that early on, it was the killer blow that laid Mayo out. His performances earned him the Player of the Year.

4. Taking care of Cork…

Opportunism at its best. His forward partner, Colm Cooper, was imperious for Kerry in the All-Ireland final of 2007, but it was Donaghy’s guile and strength for his two second-half goals that truly did for Cork. See his goals on 10:00 and 13:00 below in the video….

.

5. Courage under fire…

It’s never nice looking back at a loss, but it was one of his best days in a Kerry shirt.

Kieran was struggling with form when he played in the 2011 All-Ireland final against Dublin, but he stood out that day playing his heart out for Kerry.

The final will be remembered for Stephen Cluxton’s winning free, but Star’s point to level the game in the last minute of the game was probably the best of his career. Just look at it..

6. The second act…

In the summer of 2014, Kieran Donaghy was not starting for Kerry who had not won an All-Ireland title in five years.

They looked dead and buried against Mayo in the semi-final when he was introduced off the bench. He caught a high ball, laid it off to James O’Donoghue and the goal saved their season. He scored a goal in the replay, Kerry won an epic and set up another final…

7. Whaddaya think of that?

His last All-Ireland final win in 2014 is perhaps his sweetest.

In a dour game of football, Donaghy pounced on a bad goalkeeping mistake in the second half and his goal set Kerry up for a victory over Donegal. It was his post-match, Brolly-baiting interview that will be remembered most from that day…

Kieran’s Poem As He Departs The Kerry Football Team

.

KIERAN Donaghy signed off this morning from the Kerry senior football team and with it revealed an unknown talent…poetry!

The ‘Star’ took to Twitter and uploaded a poem, ‘Kerry, I Thank You’ which is pretty emotional I’m sure you’ll agree. He speaks of playing on the edge (for which he does not apologise) and his love for Kerry…

KIERAN Donaghy has served his county with distinction over the past 14 years and deserves all the tributes he gets after announcing his retirement this morning.

Just in case you’ve forgotten how pivotal he has been to Kerry, this video on YouTube uploaded last year shows his top scores and plays.

While that lay off to David Clifford this summer is omitted, it’s evidence how Kieran was instrumental in bringing Sam back to Kerry over the years since he exploded on the scene in 2006.

A True Legend Retires From The Kerry Football Team

WHAT a player!

Kieran Donaghy has retired from the Kerry senior football team. The Stacks man has been a colossus for the Kingdom over the past 14 years giving joy to Kerry fans with his skill, commitment, endeavour but most of all, his enormous heart.

He made the following statement this morning;

“Today I wish to announce my retirement from the Kerry Senior Football team. The journey has been full of ups and downs but I never wanted it to end. It has surpassed even my wildest dreams, that a basketball kid from Tralee would end up playing 69 times in the championship over a 14 year period for the famous Green and Gold.

To every one of my Kerry teammates who I was lucky enough to have played with, I thank you for your patience, help and advice during those years. I’m blessed to have had the time of my life with you boys fighting on my back trying to win games for Kerry. We had some tough times, such is life but the wonderful stories and memories we shared will stick with me forever.

To get the opportunity to soldier with and against some of the greatest players of all time is something I will always treasure.

During my career I have been lucky enough to work with some great Kerry managers and their respective management teams. They took a chance on me, believed in me in massive high-pressure situations. They gave me the confidence to develop my game which allowed me to perform on the biggest of occasions for Kerry .

I would like to thank the Kerry County Board along with our sponsors Kerry Group, backroom staff and medical teams for their constant help and guidance throughout my career. Your unbelievable work is not seen by many but it’s massively appreciated by the team and by me.

A huge thank you to the loyal Kerry fans who traveled far and wide to watch and support us. We love football in this county and while there is a pressure to perform we always embrace it. We need to get behind this young team we will have next year, so get the flags out and get to the games to support the boys.

I would also like to thank all the supporters who live abroad but continue their love and support of Kerry.

I would like to thank my club Austin Stacks, everything I achieved is a direct result of the help and guidance ye gave me from an early age. To represent this great club is always a massive privilege and our county championship win in 2014 gave me the ultimate honour the following season. To be captain of a county like Kerry is something I’m extremely proud to have accomplished.

To my family, without you none of this would have been possible. Mom, I am forever grateful to you for believing in me and showing me how to be a good person first and foremost.

To my wife Hilary, you’re all that I could ask for, thank you so much for always putting me first during my career , we have had so many wonderful experiences together throughout this journey and made life long friends along the way I can’t wait to start the next exciting chapter together with Lola-Rose & Indie.

To the rest of my family, thank you for your support and always having my back.

I’m a proud Kerry man and to have represented this county meant absolutely everything to me. As the great John B Keane once said, ‘I’m one lucky hoor!’”

In an interview to be published in tomorrow’s paper, he says he has spoken to his family and Eamonn Fitzmaurice and decided he will retire when he can’t help Kerry anymore.

Donaghy will turn 35 in March and is looking to his 14th season in a Kerry jersey. He enjoyed another great season in 2017 and was nominated for an All-Star.

He will continue playing basketball with Garveys Tralee Warriors while he has started gym sessions with the Kerry backroom staff and will attend the odd field session with the county setup over the coming months.

He will then be available for Kerry after the basketball season ends in early spring, similar to last year’s arrangement.

KIERAN Donaghy held his basketball camp during the week and there was another huge turnout.

The John Mitchels GAA Complex in Ballyseedy was buzzing with over 180 youngsters taking part and they received expert coaching from Kieran and his Warriors buddies, among others.

“I hold one camp a year but I might do another one next Easter, judging on the amount of calls I got around that time earlier this year,” said Kieran.

“This is the fifth year of it and it’s growing and growing. It’s about inspiring the next generation who will hopefully go on the play basketball in the years ahead. We’re trying to get a women’s basketball team going in the next few years so we’re trying to inspire the young girls,” he said.

TEACHERS from CBS The Green swapped stories on past pupil Kieran Donaghy and sixth year pupil Ryan Leonard, as the school honoured the pair for all of their achievements in sport on Thursday.

Both Kieran and Ryan were selected onto the Irish Senior Men’s Basketball Team this year and the teachers spoke of Kieran and Ryan’s determination, pride in their team and love of sport.

Both men were presented with framed mementos from their time in the school.

Kieran gave the pupils present some advice; “You should have no spare time. Spare time should be spent in a gym, if you’re basketballers, spare time should be spent on your craft. If ye want to make it, that’s the work, that’s the level that you have to get to. That’s what Ryan did, that’s what I did.”

He finished; “I did it all for the love of the game, love of the school, and love of the jersey.”

The school thanked Kieran for coming back to talk in the school every year, and wished Ryan the best of luck in both his academic and sporting future.

PHOTOS: Another Star Signing In O’Mahony’s In A Busy Few Weeks For Kieran

.

IT’S been quite a couple of weeks for Kieran Donaghy and things are showing no signs of abating over Christmas.

In the past couple of weeks he has been to New York and London for book signings and took time to visit his beloved Stamford Bridge where he was interviewed for the Official Chelsea FC Magazine and matchday programme.

Continued below…

.

He also won the Eir Sports Book of the Year and got the ‘Second Captains’ nod for Book Of The Year for ‘What Do You Think Of That?’

But the Stacks man was in O’Mahonys Bookshop on Saturday afternoon for another signing, the last before Christmas, so  there was a good crowd there to get that Christmas present with the author’s signature.

A familiar face popped in to get a copy signed too. Paul Galvin, a man no stranger to book signings, skipped the queue according to Kieran’s tweet (see below) but nobody minded as he caught up with his buddy.

Then it was off to Limerick to play for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Radisson Blu UL Eagles where he helped them enjoy and emphatic win by 98 to 66.

If you think he can put the feet up over the Christmas and take a well-earned break you’d be mistaken, as the Warriors will be at home for a cracker against UCC Blue Demons on Friday, December 30 at the sports complex. Scroll down for photos from Saturday’s book signing…

Donaghy’s Boyhood Dream Comes True At Chelsea

.

KIERAN Donaghy got to realise a boyhood dream yesterday when he walked out on the hallowed turf at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

The Stacks and Kerry star was in London for a book signing in Harrow, but was honoured to be asked to appear in an issue of the Official Chelsea Magazine and match day programme (see his instagram photos below).

Kieran is a lifelong Blue and saw them win the European Cup back in 2012 over in Munich (which according to his book, caused a bit of trouble with Kerry boss at the time Jack O’Connor).

The legend of the Star spreads to west London then. His team is flying high at the moment and if Conte needed a towering centre forward to knock down balls for Costa, we’re sure Kieran would oblige.

Meanwhile, the Tralee man will be back home on Saturday to sign copies of his ‘What Do You Think Of That?’ at O’Mahonys Bookshop in Tralee at 12 noon on Saturday.

WELL it’s been a whirlwind week for the Star.

Kieran Donaghy launched his autobiography this week and it’s been all go for the Austin Stacks man.

Apart from media commitments all week, he had a big launch of ‘What Do You Think Of That? on Thursday night where over 600 people showed up at Ballygarry House Hotel.

Then it was off to Dublin on Friday night for an appearance on The Late Late Show where he played a stormer. His honesty and openness charmed the nation and Tralee can be proud of him as always.

But there was no time for rest, as he returned to Tralee on Friday night to get a bit of shuteye, before heading down to Easons  in The Mall for his first book signing event.

Then it was off to prepare for a National Cup game with Irish TV Tralee Warriors against Swords Thunder at the Tralee Sports and Leisure Centre, where crowds filled the venue 40 minutes before the start.

Kieran helped the home side to a 61-55 win to cap off an exhausting, exhilarating and amazing week for a star performer on all stages. Scroll down for photos of the book signing at Easons…

HUNDREDS of people packed themselves into the Ballygarry House Hotel on Thursday night for the launch of Kieran Donaghy’s autobiography What Do You Think Of That?

Along with Maurice Fitzgerald and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who helped launch the account of the Stacks man’s life, were other legends of Gaelic Football scattered around the room on the night.

Kerry players past and present included, Mick O’Dwyer, Eoin ‘Bomber’ Liston, Darragh Ó Sé, David Moran, Aidan O’Mahony, Declan O’Sullivan,  Johnny Buckley, Darran O’Sullivan, Donnchadh Walsh, Liam Hassett and Pa Laide.

Northern men, Benny Coulter (Down) and Stevie McDonnell (Armagh) made the long journey south while Coleman Corrigan gave his blessing from across the border in Cork.

The night began with Donaghy greeting people on arrival and posing for more than a few photos. It was followed by the launch itself and afterwards the Star signed copies of the book for many of those that bought it on the night.

If last night is anything to go by, his latest venture is set to be an enormous success. Scroll down for photos of people attending on the night…

THERE were GAA legends everywhere you looked at the launch Kieran Donaghy’s book, What Do You Think Of That? at a packed Ballygarry House Hotel on Thursday night.

But it was up to one in particular to launch the much-anticipated, guaranteed bestseller.

Maurice Fitzgerald never lined out alongside Star in green and gold, but he was well versed to speak about the four-time All-Ireland winner, while Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, MC for the evening, looked on.

On whether Donaghy was ready to announce his retirement from inter-county football, Maurice Fitzgerald said; “the road is hard, the road is tough but I don’t think the last chapter is written yet.” With these words, Maurice who was in gregarious form, said he was re-launching Kieran’s football career as well.

Fitzgerald made light of the fact he had only read one chapter of the book, because he deleted it off his computer by mistake.

Nevertheless he described it as “refreshingly honest and totally what you would expect from Kieran Donaghy. He covers the complexities with his father as a young man growing up. You could see the strengths of a young boy coming through in the household”.

“For someone to achieve so much with two different codes and achieve at the highest level really is a phenomenal achievement that sometimes gets overlooked. To me, that marks Kieran out as someone very special,” said Maurice, who highlighted Donaghy’s performance in the 2011 losing All-Ireland final to Dublin as his finest in a Kerry jersey.

The Cahersiveen man recalled a game between St Mary’s and Austin Stacks, where he faced off against Donaghy at midfield and took a fair share of verbal abuse from his opposite number that day.

“I think I was on the downward slide at that stage, but I remember saying if I can keep Kieran Donaghy quiet, I’m pretty sure we can win. I meant keeping him quiet in a footballing sense, but I hadn’t realised in another sense it is utterly impossible as you all know!”

Kieran recalled that encounter; “I remember I put my knee on his back at one stage and caught a massive ball. I said to myself ‘I’m going to beat Maurice Fitzgerald today. This is great!’.”

With that movement, Donaghy took off down the pitch and scored a point off his weaker left foot. Running back to Maurice he said “We’re going to sort you out today!”

“The next kick out came out and I felt a knee in my shoulder,” said Kieran. Fitzy had won the ball and was ‘casually soloing’ away from the Star. “I went hassling and pulling his shorts and his jersey, eventually I caught him around the 45 and he just threw his eyes at the posts and my eyes lit up, I thought ‘not only am I going to kick a point off him but now I’m going to block him down’. I dived full stretch, Maurice toe tapped it back onto his left and slapped it over the bar from 50 yards!”

A lesson from the master then. There were many more stories told throughout the night among the huge crowd present from the world of GAA, all of them wishing the Star well. No doubt many of them are mentioned in the book.  We’ll have more photos from the launch later…

BASKETBALL, football, book launches, signings and a TV appearance are all booked into Kieran Donaghy’s schedule over the next month.

The Austin Stacks man is to appear on ‘The Late Late Show’  the day after the launch of  his autobiography, ‘What Do You Think Of That?’.

The book will hit the shelves on Thursday, October 20 and Ryan Tubridy will interview the Kerry star about his career and life outside football on the show the following night.

Before then though, there’s the small matter of the county championship match for the Rockies against Kenmare District on October 2, a Superleague basketball game with Tralee Warriors this Friday and possible further GAA matches in early October if Stacks progress.

No doubt book signings – including one in Easons Tralee on Saturday, October 22 at 12 noon – will also keep the Warrior busy in the run-up to Christmas.

KERRY star Kieran Donaghy will have his autobiography out in the shops by the end of October according to Easons.

The Austin Stacks man should have an interesting story to tell about his rise as basketball star and footballing exploits with Austin Stacks and Kerry over the years in ‘What Do You Think Of That?’, named after his most famous uttering to Joe Brolly on TV after the All-Ireland Final in 2014.

It’s set to be a revealing and honest story of his life outside football too, including dealing with dyslexia throughout his life and his roller-coaster relationship with his father.

It’ll explore how he became a star in 2006 and his pivotal role for Kerry including his resurrection in 2014 when he was pivotal in the county’s All-Ireland success and Austin Stacks’ Munster club championship victory.

According to Easons, the book is set to be released on October 20 on hardback for €18.99. With Colm Cooper’s book also rumoured to be on the way Kerry GAA fans may have some nice stocking fillers at Christmas.

Kieran Donaghy, speaks with All-Ireland Final, referee directly after the Philly McMahon, eye gouge incident.

ONE of the more interesting scenes in RTE’s ‘All Ireland Final Day’ documentary shown last night were the exchanges between Kerry v Dublin referee, David Coldrick and the players.

The programme provided an entertaining insight into the build-up to All-Ireland final day with interviews with Kerry coach Cian O’Neill and Radio Kerry’s Weeshie Fogarty, among many others.

The scene though that has gathered most attention is, unsurprisingly, Philly McMahon’s eye gouge of Kieran Donaghy.

Immediately after the incident, Donaghy can be seen going straight to Coldrick and saying; “he [McMahon] gouged my eye on the ground, Dave.”

Coldrick then replies “I didn’t see that now, Kieran… that was just two lads competing, that’s all…  Lads, lads. It’s okay. It’s alright. It’s alright, Philly.”

To be fair to the Austin Stacks man, he left it at that. In the next play he wins the hop ball and passes it to Killian Young, who agonisingly drops the pass metres out from the goal.

THE buzzer went on Kieran Donaghy’s ‘Be A Star Basketball’ camp on Friday which saw 150 kids take part over the course of the week.

Taking a brief time-out from his football career, Donaghy was putting local kids through their paces this week at his camp held in John Mitchels Sports Complex.

Kids between the ages of 6 and 14 took part in the camp while on their mid-term break from school. Donaghy also enlisted the help of former Tralee Tigers stalwarts, Roscoe Patterson and Mark Bernsen, so the young players were in good hands.

Over the past number of years, football has been the main priority for the Austin Stacks man, but back on the court again he showed us he’s still well able to dunk as you can see below in the video.

WITH his tenure as Kerry captain now over, Kieran Donaghy is facing into a winter away from Kerry football and going back to the sport closest to his heart.

Along with hosting a juvenile basketball camp (see details below), the former football player of the year will be returning to competitive hoops action with St Brendans Basketball Club.

“I’m looking forward to that, it’s a change of scene and a change of focus,” said Kieran Donaghy, speaking to TraleeToday.ie on Tuesday.

“I’ve been doing a bit coaching around Kerry with clubs in promotion of the camp. I got the itch back to play again, so I’m looking forward to it.”

“It takes a bit of adjusting, I’ve not played now in a good few years, so I’ll probably be a bit rusty. I’ll put in a bit of work over the next few weeks and see how good my game can get”

Kieran first made his name playing in the basketball Super League with the Tralee Tigers. Could there be return to those days around the corner?

“That’s the aim,” said Donaghy.

Continued below…

Meadowlands Insert
.

With the return of former Tigers coach, Mark Bernson, could there be plans to bring all the Tralee teams together, the Imperials and St Brendans all playing under one Tralee banner?

“If this town wants to get back in playing in the top division, going in under the umbrella of a Tralee basketball club would be huge. It would bring the Saturday nights back and the big crowds because it has been missing here certainly since the Super League finished. We’ll work on that over the next year and hopefully make it happen,” he said.

Switching codes, though 2015 ultimately ended in disappointment, it’s still a year Donaghy can look back on with pride having led out the Kerry team as captain on four occasions in the championship.

Story continued below…

“It was great to be captain of Kerry. Unfortunately we didn’t get the result in the end, but I was very lucky to have those four days leading the team out and coming on in the final.”

“Not many people get the chance to captain a winning team in an All-Ireland final, but that’s life and that’s sport. It will be some other guy’s turn next year because we’re out of the county championship.”

Donaghy is still weighing up whether to come back for his 12th season with Kerry. As often is the case when a player is on the wrong side of 30, supporters and pundits can be very quick to retire him.

“It’s a natural part of sport, especially after a loss. People will look and say maybe this fella’s time is up. But it’s every fella’s own decision and his own right to wait until he wants to make that decision. I’ll be busy with the basketball and club commitments over the next couple of months so we’ll see what the new year brings.”

‘The Kieran Donaghy Be A Star Basketball Camp’ is for kids between 6 and 14 and runs from, October 27 to 30 at John Mitchels GAA Complex in Ballyseedy. Price €75.

Now it’s over to Kieran Donaghy, as Earls nominated the Kerry captain and rugby legend Ronan O’Gara. Wonder how Star would fare… Thanks @SteedFiona, sorry for the delay! Next up @RonanOGara10 and @kierandonaghy.#penaltyforautism. pic.twitter.com/lwX0lxmb8N

OVER 80 boys and girls from across Kerry took part in the ‘Team Kerry Basketball Summer Camp’ in Mercy Mounthawk  during the week.

The camp which is in its sixth year prides itself on its high coach to player ratio, with one coach for every nine players. Ages of participants went from five all the way to 15.

The young hoop stars were given a treat on Friday when Kieran Donaghy called in to shoot a few baskets with them.

“It’s a great buzz to see kids learning basketball and getting a bit of craic out of it as well,” said Kieran.

Team Kerry, was formed ten years ago to bring smaller clubs together to form a stronger unit, to act in much the same way as Gaelic Football districts teams do  in the county. The team takes part in underage national basketball tournaments.

Chief organiser, Billy McGaley, maintains the ultimate aim would be to some day enter a Kerry team in the national league, which would fill a void in the town left by Donaghy’s former club Tralee Tigers.

For now, Kerry is the main focus for the 2014 All-Star, but is the door still open for a return to the court when he hangs up his football boots?

“Possibly when I finish playing football at the highest level, I might see myself going back. I love the game and wouldn’t be where I am today without it,” said Donaghy.

The week also coincided with a referee’s course where 13 referees were qualified, which was a first for the camp.

In total six courts were used, five outside and one inside, thankfully for organisers the week was mainly dry so they were able to avail fully of the facilities at their disposal in Mounthawk.

KERINS O’Rahilly’s got one over on their great rivals from The Rock on Wednesday night…but not on the football field.

Barry John Keane and Kieran Donaghy were the celebrity chefs cooking up the goods in the kitchen of Kirby’s Brogue Inn for ‘The Restaurant’ fundraiser in aid of Pieta House.

‘The Restaurant’ featured two Four-Course Menus chosen and cooked by the two chefs, while the audience, who paid €60-a-head, enjoyed bubbly on arrival and wine with their meal.

There was a capacity crowd of 110 diners present to sample the culinary delights – which included ‘Rack of Kerry Lamb’ and ‘Cod Wrapped In Parma Ham’ – from the two lads, but when the final whistle blew,  judges Pat Spillane, Paul Treyvaud and Melanie Harty deemed Barry John the winner.

Both chefs spoke and said what a wonderful experience it was for them, while organisers Margaret Brick and Fiona Kirby  were delighted with the event and Margaret thanked the judges the guests and all who made the night happen.

KIERAN DONAGHY was the special guest on hand at Derryquay National School to raise the school’s new Active School Flag which they have just been  awarded.

Many of the tiny school’s 40-plus students gathered excitedly for the arrival of ‘the Star’ and they were not disappointed when the big man arrived.

While there, Donaghy, spoke to children explaining that if they work harder, they will reap the rewards, drawing a comparison between the Active Flag Award success for Derryquay and Kerry’s All-Ireland triumph in Croke Park last September.

The Active School Flag award recognises schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and active school community.

“This is a result of the energy and dedication of teachers, parent and children and the support of members of the community and sporting organisations,” read a statement from the Derryquay National School.

The award is given by the Department of Education and Skills and is open to primary, post primary, special schools and Youthreach centres.
