Good Friday ‘Passion’ Pageant At St John’s Church Returns

.

THE Food Friday pageant on The Passion of Christ will again be staged in the Church of St John the Baptist, Castle St, Tralee, after a three-year enforced COVID break.

Almost 40 people, aged from 10 years to over 70, will participate in this year’s performance and the church choir, under the direction of Mike O’Shea, will be a vital part of the ceremony.

The pageant cast will include 10 secondary school pupils as well as some 3rd level students and it will be part of the traditional Good Friday Ceremony that will commence at 3pm on April 15.

The Pageant began over 20 years ago under the direction of Fr Pat Ahern, who still keeps an eye on proceedings.

It was a ‘follow-up’ from the very successful and highly acclaimed Green Glens (Millstreet) Millenium Pageant that celebrated 2,000 years of Christianity.

U16 ROCK HURLERS SHINE: Gaelcholáiste U16 HURLING legends impressed hugely on Monday last. The gaiscígh called on their massive reserve of confidence and ability as they made their way to Cathair Sáilí for a mouth-watering Kerry final tie, facing off against Baile an Bhuinneánaigh. The sliotar was flung into the fray around midday and a tense tête-à-tête commenced. Both teams tore chunks out of each other with goalkeeper Liam Cúipéir being called up the field to assist on more than one occasion. The 7-7 halftime scoreline gave little indication as to which side was soaring that little bit higher. The electrified crowd wasn’t complaining one bit, however! A rousing half-time speech from an Máistir Ó Conchúir sent Rock réaltaí Marc Ó Loinsigh agus Gavin Ó Cathasaigh barrelling towards a fantastic second-half display. The former was provided with an extra camán, thanks to teammate Daithí Ó Smulláin, when his own was smashed to smithereens (smidiríní) in the intense action. The clock ticked on and réiteoir was surely disappointed to call time on this spectacular affair. The GCC touchline exploded with joy upon realising that the 12 points to 9 scoreline was in their favour. Our buachaillí cróga have ushered in a new age of iománaíocht at the Gaelcholáiste and its future is looking blindingly bright! (Our GCC correspondent, Dáithí Ó Loinsigh).

TRALEE Municipal District of Kerry County Council held the second civic reception in three years for Garveys Tralee Warriors after their fantastic achievements on the court this season.

Players, coaching staff and sponsors gathered with councillors and Tralee MD staff at The Rose Hotel on Monday evening to celebrate the Super League and National Cup double.

All at Warriors are still on a high after Saturday night’s win in Dublin and they were feted by Deputy Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, who spoke of the boost it has given to the sport in the town.

“Tonight is a celebration of a wonderful Super League and cup double, a first for any basketball team in Kerry. Kerry is a sporting county as we all know, but in my eyes Tralee is not only the capital town, but it’s also the sporting capital,” said Cllr Sheehy.

“Basketball has always been to the fore in that regard. Diggins, Carey, Burrows, Teahan, Donaghy and O’Sullivan are all names that roll off the tongue when glories of past and present are discussed. But there’s another name that should also be mentioned that is synonymous with basketball in the town and that is the Garvey Group, the Warriors main sponsor and they have always been great supporters of sport in the county.”

Chairperson of Garveys Tralee Warriors, Cllr Terry O’Brien, also thanked Garvey Group and all the sponsors for their support over the years. He said the players have been great ambassadors for the town and for the sport of basketball.

He also paid tribute to the supporters, whom he described as the best in the country, the coaching staff and everyone involved in the club for making the year such a success.

Head Coach John Dowling thanked all the players and the coaching staff for their time and dedication and the committee who ensure everything runs smoothly off the court.

“We are the best looked after team in the country. Everything is taken care of. All we have to do is coach and we don’t have to worry about anything else. That’s a huge thing that does not happen in every other club,” he said.

He also paid special tribute to Cllr Terry O’Brien. “You can’t put into words what Terry O’Brien has done for this town on and off the court,” he said.

Team captain Fergal O’Sullivan thanked all involved in the club, the Council for holding the Civic Reception and Garvey Group and the rest of the sponsors for their support.

“We achieved what no other team in the county has with the league and cup double. While the medals and the trophies are great, it’s the memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives,” said Fergal. Scroll down for photos…

Fantastic Family Fun As ‘Matilda The Musical’ Comes To Siamsa This Week

.

EXCITEMENT is building among the children in the Bryan Carr School of Performing Arts as they prepare to bring ‘Matilda The Musical Jr.’ to the Siamsa Tíre stage this week.

Based on the Roald Dahl novel, this Broadway Junior adaptation of the Olivier Award-winning hit will be performed from Wednesday to Friday with tickets still available for the nightly shows.

There are about 120 children in all involved over the course of the three nights with a core cast of 30 performers.

Continued below…

.

Bryan Carr said the dynamic has been really special for this production and he’s looking forward to bringing it to the stage.

The production is a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination. This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

The show is packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs and children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

There are tickets available for the three performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night starting at 7:30pm. For enquiries call the box office on 066 7123055 or click here to go to the website for online bookings.

PHOTOS: Volunteers Collect 26 Bags Of Litter At Banna Beach On Sunday

Volunteers at the Banna Coastcare clean-up on Sunday.

BANNA Coastcare took part in An Taisce’s National Spring Clean on Sunday with 25 volunteers collecting 26 bags of litter in just one hour.

April 1 marked the start of the National Spring Clean month, with volunteers all over the country cleaning up their community.

Banna Coastcare’s clean-up saw volunteers spend an hour collecting litter from the beach, the dunes, and the approach road. They collected 26 bags of litter, a fishing crate, a gallon drum and a pallet.

Continued below…

.

Rachel Geary of Banna Coastcare wished to thank everyone that turned up and gave up their Sunday morning.

“The clean-ups provide an opportunity for volunteers to take action and make a change on both a local and global scale,” she added.

“It’s great to see so many young volunteers, they are an inspiration to us all making an effort to help keep our coastline free of litter! Their efforts were rewarded by Salty Souls Cafe who generously gave every young volunteer a hot chocolate afterwards,” said Rachel.

Tralee Chamber and Glan Tralee were also represented at the clean-up.  Banna Rescue supported the event by bringing their launcher down to the beach to collect all the full bags and drop them in the car-park.

Kerry County Council supported the event by removing all the bags collected.  National Spring Clean is an initiative organised by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce. Scroll down for photos…

Blennerville Pupils Raise Funds To Give Ukrainian Children A Day Out

.
Pupils from St Brendan’s NS Blennerville fifth class with parents about to set off on a 5k fundraising walk from the Lock Gates at the canal for Ukrainian refugees in Tralee.

A GROUP of 26 newly-arrived Ukrainian children will enjoy a special day out in Tralee over the Easter weekend, thanks to the generosity of the children of fifth class at St Brendan’s National School, Blennerville.

Having been greatly moved by the scenes on television of families desperately fleeing Ukraine following the Russian invasion, the 5th class pupils decided they wanted to do something special for the refugee families who arrived in Tralee.

They wanted to do something specific for the children, to make their time in Tralee more fun. So the pupils organised a sponsored walk, setting out from the Lock Gates on Thursday evening and walking a 5km route — down the canal walkway to the Marina and back.

Continued below…

.

A group of 35, including some parents and siblings, braved the rain and hailstones and completed the walk. A total of €700 in cash – plus some vouchers for Penney’s – was raised by the children who took part.

The money is being given to the Tralee branch of St Vincent de Paul, who — along with the Tralee International Resource Centre – are using it to treat the newly-arrived refugees to a day out over the Easter weekend, including a trip to the Aqua Dome, dinner and shopping for some new clothes.

Junior Locke from the St Vincent de Paul paid tribute to the Blennerville pupils and said the people of Tralee have been incredibly generous to the Ukrainians since they arrived.

Council Thanks Thousands Of Volunteers For County Clean-Up Efforts

.
From Ukraine to Killarney with love…Host family, Orla Tangney, left, and husband, Noel O’Reilly (KWD recycling) with Natalie Bahric with her daughter Yeseniya Bahric and Sofia Volovyk, who fled their homes in war torn Ukraine, two weeks ago, joined in The KWD Annual County Clean-Up Day on Saturday. THE Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, thanked all those who participated in the County Clean-Up on Saturday.

Thousands of volunteers collected hundreds of bags of litter across the county on Saturday during the tenth annual County Clean Up.

For the first time in three years, the event was able to take place at full capacity and almost 5,000 volunteers registered with KWD Recycling to participate.

.

KWD has begun the collection of all of the litter which has been collected by community groups and individuals all over Kerry.

“It was so uplifting to see so many people in their high-vis vests and equipped with bags and litters pickers in towns and rural areas in every part of the county,” said Cathaoirleach Moloney.

“The weather held up nicely and ensured that volunteers could play their part. I want to say a very sincere thank you to each and every one of them for their assistance and particularly Tidy Towns committees and community groups who coordinated the effort in their areas,” said Cllr Moloney.

Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling echoed the appreciation for all of the volunteers.

“The County Clean Up is now a well-established community event and gives an annual focus to the environment and waste in Kerry. We would ask everyone to bear with us while we gather up all of the bags of litter for disposal. Well done to everyone who took part.”

Finance: Purr-fect Advice On Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT)

.

In her student days, Julianne Spring Heavey from CDS Law & Tax LLP, met the legendary actor Bill Murray out in Tralee Golf Club after her brother had caddied for him.

She recalls, “When I told him I was studying to be a tax consultant he said something very wise: ‘The best way to teach kids about taxes is by eating 30% of their ice cream!’

“Well, if you want to keep your ‘ice-cream’ you’ll need to know about Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT).”

Julianne, who’s a Chartered Tax Advisor with CDS Law & Tax LLP, has some advice on CAT, the tax payable by recipients on the market value of benefits (gifts and inheritances) received...

The current rate of CAT is 33%, with effect from 6 December 2012, so it is a major tax impacting on the passing of wealth.

Accordingly, it can be a very worthwhile exercise to explore the tax reliefs, exemptions and planning opportunities available to reduce or eliminate your CAT exposure.

Among other issues, such as the nature of the benefits being passed and the tax residency status of the parties, the relationship of the beneficiary to the disponer (the provider of the gift or inheritance) is crucial in assessing the existence and quantum of a CAT liability.

Continued below…

.

The most widely used exemption from CAT is that which applies to gifts and inheritances between spouses or civil partners (within the meaning of the Civil Partnership Act 2010).

There is no value limit to this exemption which makes these transfers completely tax exempt.

For all other gifts/inheritances the so-called ‘group thresholds’ must be considered.  Every person is entitled to three lifetime CAT exempt group threshold amounts, Groups A, B and C, where, depending on the relationship to the disponer, an individual can receive certain amounts of benefits tax-free.

The first of these groups, Group A, allows children to receive total tax-free benefits of €335,000 in their lifetime, from their parents.  Any amount received from one’s parents over this amount may be subject to CAT at 33%.

The definition of children here includes stepchildren, adopted children, children of an individual’s civil partner and certain foster children.

Group A recipients also include minor children of deceased children of the disponer, and parents where they take an inheritance of an absolute interest from a child who predeceases them.

Group B affords a separate lifetime exemption threshold of €32,500, which allows one to receive total benefits up to this amount tax-free from a defined group of close blood relatives.

These relatives would include, for example, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts, nieces, nephews, grandparents and grandchildren.

The final threshold, Group C, covers the sum of benefits received from other individuals, not covered under Groups A and B, known as ‘strangers-in-blood’, up to the amount of €16,250.  Most notably, disponers in this group would include in-laws and cousins.

Cohabitants often assume that because they are living together, especially if they have children and/or own property together, that they qualify for more favourable tax treatment than that which is afforded so-called ‘strangers in blood’ under Group C.

However, unless the transfer is to a qualified cohabitant on foot of a Court Order under the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010, this is not the case.

Therefore, a large CAT liability can arise in the event of assets being transferred, either as gifts or inheritances, between cohabitants.

When assessing whether these threshold amounts have been reached/exceeded, only benefits received post 5th December 1991 are considered and benefits received before this date are ignored.

Also, along with the rate of CAT, these group threshold amounts are subject to change over the years, the Group A threshold having reached a high of €542,544 in 2009, so timing is, as ever, important.

CAT legislation provides for a ‘small gift exemption’ where one can receive a gift (not an inheritance) up to the value of €3,000 from any person in any calendar year without having to pay CAT thereon.

This means that one may take a gift from any number of people in a year and the first €3,000 from each disponer is exempt from CAT.

Where a gift exceeds this limit only the excess is taken into account for the purposes of calculating the tax payable.

Crucially, while these ‘small gifts’ are not taken into account in computing tax, they also do not eat into one’s lifetime group thresholds.

This exemption is very useful as regards donations received, for instance, on crowdfunding platforms, whereby the recipient can receive any number of small gifts, from any number of disponers, tax-free – once the €3,000 limit on each gift has not been exceeded.

Here’s an example of where this small exemption could prove very valuable over time:  Anna and Jack are in their 40’s and have three children.

They are earning substantial incomes and have accumulated significant wealth.  It is very likely that their children’s Group A thresholds would be exceeded when they eventually inherited their parents’ estate, tipping the excess over the €335,000 into the taxable zone.

Anna and Jack could each gift each of their children €3,000 per annum and these gifts would be tax free in their minor/adult children’s hands and would not be counted against their Group A tax thresholds.

So, if Anna and Jack were to each gift their three children €3,000 each for the next thirty years (assuming the exemption limit remains constant), they could achieve a total tax-free wealth transfer of €540,000 (€3,000 gift x 2 parents x 3 children x 30 years), representing a total CAT saving for their children of up to €178,200.

Of course, grandparents could also achieve this with their grandchildren.  In this instance, while the number of years available in which to make the gifts would reduce, the number of recipients would increase – so here again the Small Gift Exemption could allow for a substantial tax-free transfer of wealth while preserving their Group B thresholds.

For example, Grace and Richard have 10 grandchildren and if they each gift each of their grandchildren €3,000 per annum for fifteen years they could achieve a tax-free wealth transfer of €900,000 (€3,000 gift x 2 grandparents x 10 grandchildren x 15 years), representing a potential CAT saving for their grandchildren of €297,000.

Indeed, where anyone wishes to gift wealth to someone who is not a spouse/civil partner/close relative, so the transfer would not be covered under the spousal/civil partnership exemption or under the Group A or B thresholds, and the amount would exceed the low Group C amount of €16,250 (or the recipient has already used up that threshold on prior benefits) then gifting them €3,000 tax free per annum, particularly, over a long number of years, can provide significant tax relief.

Essentially, while the Small Gift Exemption looks to represent a minor freedom from tax, if used for maximum effect it can have a rather large impact.

It is important to remember where a person is allowed to have the use, occupation or enjoyment of another’s property free or for less than market value, this constitutes a gift for CAT purposes.

Beneficiaries are responsible for paying any CAT that is due and they must file a tax return if the total value of gifts and inheritances they have received in one of the Groups, A, B or C, since 5 December 1991, is more than 80% of the tax-free threshold for that group, even if no CAT is payable.

• Please note that this article sets out a brief introduction to the current CAT law and practice in Ireland which may be subject to changes in the future.

The conditions in the relevant CAT legislation, other major CAT reliefs such as business relief and agricultural relief or indeed other taxes, such as capital gains tax and/or stamp duty, could warrant consideration in your individual circumstances.

There may also be tax implications for disponers, particularly in relation to capital gains tax.  So, before you plan any transfer of wealth, be it during your lifetime or by will, it is important to seek the advice of a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser.

Our tax team in CDS Law & Tax LLP would be delighted to discuss this or any other tax optimisation/planning opportunities with you, so do call into either of our offices located on 4 Denny Street, Tralee or Penrose Wharf, Alfred Street, Cork or phone us on 066 7169033/021 2355810.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Kenmare Shamrocks 2-4 (10); Austin Stacks 1-13 (16).

With a ten points winning margin against Gneeveguilla in the opening round our Seniors continued their winning ways with a trip to Kenmare of last Saturday evening (2nd April) in round 2 of the Co. League. With a strong cross-field breeze favouring no team as such, it took both sides awhile to settle with the first score of the game coming in the 9th from a David Mannix free. Six minutes later a brilliant move started by goalkeeper, Wayne Guthrie, with Jack O’Shea and Cian Purcell also involved, saw our first score from play coming from Gearóid Fitzgerald. David Mannix was then on target from play five minutes later and he followed that with two pointed frees with 26 minutes on the clock. A minute later Cian Purcell laid off to Conor Horan who put over from play. Then just on the stroke of  half time the home side got their first and only score of the half with a pointed free to leave us ahead by 0-6 to 0-1 at the break.

We continued to dominate after the resumption and at the end of the third quarter we had extended our lead to ten points (1-9 to 0-2). Our three points came from Gearóid Fitzgerald, Eoghan Carroll and Fiachna Mangan  with our goal of the game coming in between – a brilliant finish from Conor Horan.

The home side came more into the game during the final quarter – outscoring us by 2-2 to 0-4) – our four points coming from four differed players – Shane O’Callaghan, Jack O’Shea and Eoghan Carroll from play and a pointed free by Darragh O’Brien. But we had enough done during the course of the hour to come away with a well-deserved victory. Michael O’Donnell was deservedly named the Celsius Menware Man of the Match.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Luke Chester, Barry Walsh, Niall Fitzmaurice, Eoghan Carroll (0-2), Jack O’Shea (0-1), Donagh McMahon, Michael O’Donnell, Ronan Shanahan, David Fitzmaurice, Fiachna Mangan (Capt) (0-1), Conor Horan (1-1), Cian Purcell, Gearóid Fitzgerald (0-2), David Mannix (0-4 – three frees).

REPORT/PHOTOS: Warriors Beat Neptune To Add Super League Crown To National Cup

Alan Cantwell was in Dublin for the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League 2021/2022 Final on Saturday night…

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors completed an incredible double of national titles by adding the InsureMyVan.ie Super League crown to the InsureMyHouse.ie Pat Duffy National Cup with a 78-72 win over C&S Neptune at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Saturday night.

For the second time they denied C&S Neptune a major title with a come from behind victory, which at times seemed unlikely, as they trailed the Leesiders throughout the contest only to take the lead for the very first time with just four minutes on the clock.

.

Unlike the Cup final it was Neptune that seized the early initiative and raced into a lead with captain Roy Downey firing down the opening score from play with a three and Ricaud Gittens doing likewise after Nil Sabata added a double from inside.

The Warriors resistance came with a solitary three pointer from Daniel Jokubaitis and when Downey fired down his second score from outside to move Neptune 12 points ahead forcing Coach John Dowling to call an early time-out.

The introduction of Kieran Donaghy plugged the gaps in defence and Aaron Calixte, Eoin Quigley and Darragh O’Hanlon combined to cut the gap back to 25-17.

Cian Heaphy and Sabata kept Warriors in check with a score each but Calixte and Donaghy with a score and a plus one kept the gap to single figures.

A late shootout saw Fergal O’Sullivan and Jokubaitis hit threes at one end and a James Hannigan effort off the backboard for Neptune saw his side lead 28-25 at quarter time.

.

A low scoring second quarter saw baskets harder to come by with both defences on top in the early minutes but Ron Elksnis opened his account with a nice cut and lay up in response to a similar effort from Sabata.

The shooters on both sides then opted to load up from outside the arcs and threes from O’Sullivan and Calixte were negated by major scores from Downey and Gittens before Heaphy moved Neptune 5 points ahead when he also hit the mark from distance.

The Warriors then hit one of the scores of the game after Eoin Quigley had spectacularly rejected a drive to the board from Sabata, Calixte kicked the ball out to O’Hanlon in the corner and he made no mistake for a three to cut the gap to a single score.

Neptune captain Roy Downey would have the last say in the quarter with a last gasp basket off the glass to keep his side ahead by 42-38 at the long break.

The Neptune dangerman Sabata hooked in the opening score of the third quarter to edge Neptune further ahead but a three from Quigley kept the Warriors right in the contest before O’Hanlon added to leave just a single point between the sides.

Gary Walsh hit his first score for Neptune with a three before Washington and Sabata kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Roso and Calixte replied by taking full advantage of Neptune indiscretions, but the Warriors were in foul trouble at the other end and Gittens, player coach Colin O’Reilly and Aleix Tarradellas hit six from six from the line to extend the Neptune lead. A late three from Calixte closed the gap to 60-54 at the end of the third quarter.

A quick double from Sabata either side of a basket and a plus one from Calixte moved the Cork side 7 points ahead early in the final quarter and in a game that was so tight it looked to be a decisive advantage.

But the Warriors launched what would prove to be a game changing run started by Darragh O’Hanlon with a trademark three followed by a double from Roso and a floated effort from Quigley.

The Cup champions took the lead for the very first time in the game when Nikola Roso converted after Sabata had rimmed out in what would prove to be a crucial momentum swing to the Warriors.

The Warriors fans were on their feet when Donaghy fired in the toughest shot in the game with a three from the corner and the supporters were in full voice when a floated effort from Calixte pushed them into a 74-70 lead.

The All Star point guard repeated the dose a minute later with an uncontested lay-up after a Neptune turnover and with it the realisation that it was not going to be their night.

Calixte would finish the game in style by adding two from two to finish with a game high 21 points and secure the Super League title for the Warriors much to the delight of the army of travelling fans who spilled onto the court to celebrate the Cup and League double.

It was a fantastic final, full of incident and drama and it was a late charge from Warriors that proved to be the difference between the sides in the end.

Senior County League Division 1 Rd 2

Kerins O Rahillys 0-08 Dingle 1-16

The senior team hosted Dingle on Saturday evening last in Caherina. Again short a good number of regulars . However it was an opportunity to give a number of panelist’s a run out in the senior colours for the first time.

Gearoid Savage opened the scoring from a close in free after three minutes , alas this was to be our only score for a considerable length of time with Dingle completely dominating possession and scoring a goal and eight points without reply.

Conor Hayes kicked our second point in the twenty third minute and a pointed free from Gearoid Savage five minutes later would be our last score of the half , leaving us trailing 1-10 to -03 at the break.

The second half introduction of Gavin O Brien made an immediate impact when he made a surging run and kick a good score from thirty five yards out on the right.

While we never gave up, the gap between the side was too great, and the visitors were well in control throughout, converting their chances with greater ease.

The increased their lead as the second half progressed. We then pushed Gavin O Brien to the edge of the square , where he gathered a long ball and neatly converted for the blues fifth point.

Darragh McElligott kicked a point minutes later after a fine run from Cormac Coffey.
Both sides then traded minor scores with our last two points coming form a Gearoid Savage free and Conor Hayes from play.

Dingle were to win out and were worthy winners, this was a fixture that was always going to be difficult considering the amount of regulars unavailable to us.

However the positives are that we were able to give competitive debuts to a number of young panelist’s which will be of benefit going forward, Stephen Nix, Ben Hanafin and Danny Hennessey among them.

Team: S Foley,S Nix,P Neenan,C Coffey,S Collins,D McElligott,J Daly,S Walsh,T Hoare,G Savage(3f)S McElligott (1),B Hanafin,D Bowler,D Hennessey,C Hayes (2).

GAELIC4GIRLS
G4G gives girls an excellent introduction to ladies football with the hope that they will continue to play and remain involved in sport and our club.

It’s also a fantastic way to have fun with your friends and also make new friends. One reason for encouraging girls to play sport is the health benefits but there is so much more…. one can’t underestimate the social aspect, by playing sports they make new friends which is of great benefit to them especially when they move to secondary school.

A best friend may not be in the same class but you may know someone from football or have football in common with other girls in your class. And do girls love to chat …

Last Saturday we welcomed Alison and Stevie Rose .
Great fun was had by all …Kicking over bar,
Rounders , Obstacle course , 1v1/2v2 and the girls finished up with a game followed by a tasty treat.
Happy birthday to Abbey O’ Connor who will turn 11 during the week from all of us.

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE

DIVISION 4

DUAGH v STRAND ROAD BLUES

Still beautiful smiles from the Strand Road Blues after their defeat in Rd. 1 of the North Kerry League v Duagh last Monday.

On Monday evening last , our Strand Road Blues were away to Duagh in the first round of the North Kerry league.

Muireann McCarthy  who also celebrated her birthday last weekend was captain . Strand Road wore their Blue and White jerseys with pride as they took their positions on the pitch. For some girls this was their debut U12 match.

We lost the toss so were playing with the sun in the goalie’s  eyes for the first half which proved a challenge. Duagh took the lead quite quickly using this to their advantage and scoring a goal early on. Ruby Foley’s  kick outs were high and long but Duagh’s tall girls gave us no hope of succeeding.

Our back line Sarah McGrath , Muireann McCarthy, Yvie Ross, Rachael Ahern and Emily Corridon tried hard to defend their goals but Duagh scored 4 more goals early in the first half.

The 5 goal rule then was activated so any goal after will be counted as a point. Ruby persevered and kicked a short ball to Yvie   who took her hop and solo and skillfully passed off to Rachael  Ahern who also showed her skills by kicking a high ball into midfielder Jessie Griffin…a short handpass to Ava O‘  Donoghue who sent  the ball over the bar which lead to our first score of the game .

Kerry Group Suspends Operations In Russia And Belarus

.

KERRY Group has suspended its operations in Russia and Belarus.

Kerry Group has been operating in Russia since 2006 with a research and development operation in Moscow situated there since 2014 and they also have a manufacturing facility in the city. It employs 250 people between Russia and Belarus.

The company issued a statement saying it had taken the decision following extensive ongoing consultation with stakeholders.

.

“Kerry Group has continuously monitored the unfolding situation in Ukraine and we are horrified at the escalation of the humanitarian crisis,” reads the statement to the stock exchange.

“Over the last number of weeks the group has scaled back activities in Russia and Belarus. This suspension will be managed in an orderly manner, during which the company will continue to pay employees and fulfil our legal obligations.”

Local Sinn Féin councillor Cathal Foley has welcomed the decision to suspend operations.

“It is almost a month to the day when I first called on Kerry Group to suspend its operations in Russia,” said the Tralee MD councillor.

“That call was supported by my colleagues at Kerry County Council who share a long relationship with the company. All of us have a moral obligation to try and do all in our power to put pressure on the Russian regime to end their invasion and pull out of Ukraine.”

“Every right thinking person is appalled at the brutal treatment of the civilian population of Ukraine, not least the most recent allegations of the summary executions, torture and rape of civilians in Bucha.”

“Kerry Group has finally made the correct decision and while it may seem to be a small and insignificant gesture, it sends a clear message that rogue states will not be rewarded with foreign investment and treated the same as modern peaceful nations. All Irish companies still operating in Russia need to follow suit,” he said.

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS

Fabulous morning training was had by all the under 7s in glorious sunshine.  The boys and girls put in a great session in warn conditions.  All skills were gone through and some great games were played.  Well done to everyone.

We are welcoming new members every Sunday at 11am at our complex in Ballyseedy. So, to all the moms and dads out there, why not come up on Sunday and see what we’re all about?

U8/U10/GIRLS

It’s was a really beautiful morning in Ballyseedy last Sunday morning when training resumed for our u8s and u10 girls. Thomas Kearns put the girls through their paces with a fun filled session, focusing on the core principles of Gaelic football, catching, passing and kicking.

We have a really attentive group of girls this year and the effort given by all was fantastic to see. The girls were in fantastic form and we would like to thank all the parents and guardians for taking the time to bring the girls to each session.

The improvements are visible week on week and the future looks bright as we have a group of superstars training each Sunday morning. Training resumes next Sunday morning at 11 am. Please bring gum shields and water to each session and we are looking forward to seeing everyone in Ballyseedy again.

U12 GIRLS

Our U12 girls had a really positive training session last Sunday morning as we prepare for a very busy week ahead with 2 matches this week. We begin on Wednesday evening, April 6th with an away fixture against Kerins O’ Rahilly’s at their Ballyrickard pitch (V92E264). We will be meeting there at 6:15 pm with the match throwing in at 6:40 pm.

It would be great to begin with a good performance and hopefully we will have plenty of family and friends there to cheer on this great bunch of girls. All support would be really appreciated. Then on Sunday afternoon April 10th we face Knock/Brosna at home in Ballyseedy.

We will meet at 12:30 pm with the game throwing in at 1pm. The improvements are there for all to see since the start of the season and we really have a great bunch of girls representing John Mitchel’s U12s this year, let’s hope that we can follow up on the success of 2021 with two good performances this week.

Our club colours are white shorts and green and gold socks and it is vital that all the girls have gum shields for matches as they are not permitted to play without them.We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday evening.

U14 GIRLS

With a number of free weeks from competition, a challenge game was arranged for the John Mitchel’s u-14 girls on Monday night 28th March, with Laune Rangers travelling to Ballyseedy for the game.

As it was only the second game of the season for our team, it was important that we worked hard on our tactics and ensuring that the girls were comfortable working together.

With coaches Denis, Padraig, John, Eric and Karen looking on, the girls played some excellent football throughout, and enjoying a comfortable win. Playing at full-forward, Chloe grabbed 2 early goals and they really set up the team to build on their success.

With a strong back line, anchored by Eabha, Sadhbh and Gia in the full back line and Nicole, Ava and Laoise in the half backs, the Killorglin team struggled to make an impact.

At midfield, Ellie and Brigid, helped by Ella, had a strong platform to attack, where Kelly, Ellie and Kerri were very strong, and assisted the full forward line of Chloe and Dionne. When the changes were made, they didn’t weaken the team, with Katelyn, Tara, Megan, Ella, Claudia and Isabel all assisting when they came on.

With a League game taking place on Monday against Listowel Emmets B, the team held training sessions on Thursday and a light session on Sunday morning with the emphasis on team-shape and tactics. All the sessions were well attended and the commitment from the players has been terrific.

U16 GIRLS

Mitchel’s u16 girls we’re in county league action on Tuesday, away to Finuge/St.Sennans.

After a close game, the home side edged a narrow 2-point win, 1-09 to 1-07.

Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club Membership 2022

Membership Due

Membership fees for 2022 are now due and can be paid online by visiting https://member.clubforce.com/memberships_cart_m.asp?LL_ID=2602&intMF_ID=9476&fbclid=IwAR0TifngeTCFZ_TKbKjBeMj1nzJATqvxM-2B3q2-QmsZbn7sSyAVRWeV67I#Anchor. Club membership is open to Adult Players, Adult Non-Players, Juvenile Players and Families and New Members are always welcome.

The monies received is funnelled towards the maintenance of facilities, playing equipment, affiliation fees, insurance, utility bills, team preparation and other administrative costs. Our GAA Club is reliant on all members paying their subscriptions to cover these running costs as the GAA at Central Level (Croke Park) or County Level do not provide grants, finance, or assistance to cover these general running costs.

The membership fee rates for 2022, as set by the Club Executive, are detailed by clicking on the link above.

Why has the membership price increased?

Our membership rates have not increased in a couple of years, while in the interim, the running costs of the club have increased significantly on items like utility costs, affiliation and registration fees, referee fees, team preparation, equipment, and insurance, as part of the day-to-day running costs of the club. We are also conscious that further costs increases are extremely likely in 2022.

In addition, our club developments at Paddy Burke Memorial Park are continuing and we want to ensure as much of our fundraising activities goes towards the development rather than the day-to-day costs of running the club.

Online Renewals

If you are renewing your membership on-line via ClubForce, all of your details are already on the system; simply use the same email address you used last year when purchasing your membership or logging into the ClubForce app. The form will be pre-populated with your details which you should check and update if required.

If you cannot remember your password, please use the “Forgot Password” facility on the ClubForce App or the ClubForce Website.

Membership Rights

Please note: To be eligible to vote at our Club AGM and to be entered in any club draws for tickets, you must have your club membership paid no later than 30th April 2022. Any membership received after this date will be accepted but will not entitle the member to voting rights at the Club AGM or gain entry to any club ticket draws that may be run during the year.

Questions or Queries?

If you are still unsure on how to register or need any further assistance or details on the various membership packages, you can contact our Club Secretary (Secretary.milltowncastlemaine.kerry@gaa.ie) or Club Registrar (mcgaaclubregs@gmail.com) for advice.

Again, we thank you for your support during 2021 as we look forward to a successful 2022 season.

Daly Calls For Zero-Tolerance Approach To Hospital Overcrowding At UHK

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

SINN Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has called on the government to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to hospital overcrowding following the publication of the INMO’s Trolley Watch analysis for March.

The figures show for University Hospital Kerry show 338 patients were waiting on trolleys the hospital in March, the highest figure for the month since 2019 when 297 were on trollies in UHK.

Deputy Daly demanded that the Minister for Health take urgent action to address the root cause of dysfunction in our hospital which is driving the trolley crisis.

Continued below…

.

“I am very concerned by the high number of people waiting on trolleys at UHK,” he said.

“Over the past 15 years, we have witnessed persistently high trolley numbers in the hospital, which was already worryingly high and unacceptable.  It is not uncommon to see high numbers of people waiting on trolleys in UHK for more than 9 or even 24 hours.

“The government must take a zero-tolerance approach to hospital overcrowding and ensure that Kerry people have access to high quality and timely healthcare.

“There is a need for more beds and capacity in diagnostics and surgical theatres, but that is not all.  The root causes of emergency department dysfunction are poor patient flow, low hospital capacity, delayed discharges, poor out-of-hours GP coverage and a lack of alternatives in the community.

“There are efficiency reforms that have worked in some hospitals to reduce overcrowding and reduce delays in discharging patients, such as specialist medical wards. Above all else, we need to join up community and hospital healthcare. Too often, hospitals are left trying to discharge a patient, but there is no recovery bed available for them.

“Patients at UHK deserve better and the government must do everything possible to address this crisis urgently,” he said.

Club Senior Team

Our Ballymac Senior Men had their second game in the County League Division 1 against Gneeveguilla away in Gneeveguilla on Saturday, 4th of April.

It was a fresh, fine evening with an isolated shower.

Ballymac started the better side and got an early lead. Half-time score was Gneeveguilla 1-6 Ballymac 2-6.

Gneeveguilla struck early in the second half with a goal to level the contest.

It was an arm wrestle between both teams, both demonstrating great levels of tenacity & fitness levels.

Gneeveguilla were the eventual victors

Gneeveguilla 2-9 Ballymac 2-7

Up next for our Seniors is Kenmare at home in Ballymac next weekend. All support for the team and management welcomed.

U 15 County League Division 1B

On Wednesday night last, our under 15 boys commenced their county league competition at home to Firies. After preparing very well for the last seven weeks they hit the ground running up a score-line of 4-08 to 0-02 by halftime. Firies battled hard throughout the second half but our lads won out comfortably in the end. A great start to the league but no doubt stiffer tests lie ahead. Next game is away to Kenmare on Wednesday next.

Great to see Conal Savage back on the pitch for a brief appearance after his injury.

Team. Cian Harris, Cian Gilroy, Micheal O Connor, Matthew Rodgers, Eoghan Joy, Stephen Turner, Sam Slattery, Eoin Moriarty, Jack Joy(c), Ciaran O Connell, Luke Silles, Michael Quirke, Padraig Reidy, Gearoid Healy, Maurice Harrington.

Subs; Luke Griffin, Des Martin, Jamie Tarrant, Shane Brosnan, John Leen, Conal Savage.

Russell Cup Final

Well done to Ciaran O’Connell, Padraig Reidy and Gearoid Healy on helping St. Pats Castleisland win the Russell Cup for the first time since 1991,

It was a great achievement by our under 15 squad to have 9 players in the final representing The Green and St. Pats

Under 13s

Our U13 boys travelled to Na Gael in a damp Tralee this evening for round 2 of the County League. Our gold boys were up first against a physically bigger na Gael side and they played their hearts out all the way to the final whistle. Na Gael were much too strong overall and won out on a score line of 3-17 to 3-00. All the boys put in a great effort and can hold their heads high after this performance.

Great performances by Geariod McElligott, Darragh Lyons and Tadhg o Connor.

Our blue team played their best football of the year so far tonight against a very strong Na Gael team. Some fantastic running football and great scores by Jack Collins and Adrian o Connor kept us within 2 pints of the hosts at half time. There were some terrific battles in the centre of the field with Daragh McMahon and Jackson Brosnan flat out trying to keep the Na Gael dangermen in check.

Jack Lynch in goals played a great game and despite a late goal by Conor McCarthy Na Gael ran out the winners 5-14 to 3-09.

Overall, the lads played very well as a team and can be proud of themselves.

On Thursday last evening U10 boys played their second Go Game away to John Mitchel’s. It was a very competitive game and Mitchel’s played with the wind in the first half. Our backs were under pressure but held their own. Michael Scanlon and Jake Sugrue were outstanding at the back in the first half of the game. Daithí O’Connor, Dara Leen and Conor Mangan kept things ticking over on the scoreboard.

In the second half of the game, we kept the ball in Mitchel’s half and piled the pressure on them.  Dylan Scanlon and Jack Stack never gave up and have shown immense improvement. Thanks to Gearóid Jones (in goals), Mikey Brosnan who played both corner back and corner forward and Conor Mangan (wing forward) for coming up from U9 to help us out.

There was a great presence of teamwork on the night. Well done lads!

Thanks to the referees and John Mitchel’s coaches for a sporting game.

Academy

“Another beautiful Sunday morning well spent with our Academy kids. The field was alive with friends old and new learning and honing skills, on and off the ball. Among our new faces this week were recent arrivals to the area. We were delighted to welcome back some Ukrainian children who enjoyed a taster session with us two weeks ago. Ласкаво просимо до Ballymac.

Our U5 squad numbered 40 children this week, the largest number so far this season. Together we practiced passing and catching the ball, scoring goals and improving fundamental movement skills with an agility course and cone work. Looking forward to welcoming you all back next week.”

Ladies

Senior Ladies

Our Senior Ladies are due to play Listowel next weekend at home keep an eye on our social media for details

Under 16

On Thursday evening our under 16 ladies for 2022 had their first outing, away to Cromane. We were missing three players and with such a tight squad we were going to be under pressure. This was a 13v 13 game. The first half we could see the lack of match practise and the game was put out of our reach.

The second half though we started to get our combinations right and we were able to control the game. Cromane still ran out winners thanks to such a strong first half performance.

Ballymac squad on the night was, Aoibhinn Broderick, Deborah O’Connor, Rose Brosnan, Anna Collins, Emma Daly, Alice Brosnan, Laura Kelly, Jill Quirke, Sarah Scanlon, Katie Landers, Kate Collins, Niamh Rice, Orla O’Connor and Sarah O’Rourke. Thanks to the coaches Mike Broderick, Don Brosnan, Una Kerins, Anthony Griffin and Donal Rahilly for all the work put in so far this year.

Scór na nÓg

Pride of place goes to our Tráth na gCeist Scór na nÓg team of Dan Maloney, Brian Reidy, Oisin O’Sullivan & Donnacha Buttimer and their bainisteoir Damien Kissane, who qualified for the All Ireland final in the INEC on Sunday 3rd May.

At the Munster Final in Cashel on Sunday, the Parnells lads led the way from Cork and Tipperary after 60 team questions in the morning. Following 20 more individual questions on stage in the afternoon, Parnells just missed out on 1st place by 1 point.

However, they had already secured their place in the All Ireland Final so the journey home from Cashel was made easier. Comhgairdeas leo agus go néirí leo i gcraobh na hÉireann!

Under 7 Boys and Girls

The return to outdoor training finally arrived for Tralee Parnells under 7’s last Friday in Caherslee. As the sun was shinning down on them the young returning players took to the familiar ground like ducks to water while also welcoming some new recruits into the fold.

With the coaches guiding them through the drill stations our young stars gave it all they had and more.  As always our training session ended with a few competitive games of hurling and the roar of Come On Parnells ! Congratulations to this weeks player of the week Timmy Sheehan, well done Timmy.

Senior Hurling

On a cold Friday evening under lights in Caherslee, Tralee Parnells senior hurlers suffered a home defeat to Ballyduff in Round 4 of the Co. Senior Hurling League.  Missing many of their starting players, this was always going to be a tough ask for Parnells.

The situation looked difficult from early on as Ballyduff scored within a minute of throw-in followed by a couple of missed frees for the home team.

The visitors had the majority of the possession while a defensive scramble lead to Ballyduff scoring the only goal in this half.  Parnells finished the half with a nice score from midfielder Cillian Litchfield. Half Time: Tralee Parnells 0-3 Ballyduff 1-6

With some substitutions and positional changes at half time the second half started as a more even affair with Parnells gaining more possession in the middle of the field.

Two points from Ballyduff were quickly followed by two points from Gearoid O’Doherty (Doc) from placed ball.  Unfortunately, this was quickly followed by another Ballyduff goal.  Parnells were not to be daunted and a long distance point from Killian O’Riordan on the wing spurred on the team.

Doc tapped over another free a few minutes later to try to close the gap.  Unfortunately this was to be the last score from Parnells as some defensive errors by the home team allowed Ballyduff to finish strongly with 2 goals and a point.

Final score: Tralee Parnells 0-7 Ballyduff 4-9 Scorers for Parnells: G. Doherty (0-5f), Cillian Litchfield (0-1), Killian O’Riordan (0-1) Team as they lined out: Mark Ryall, Jack Doyle, Tim Kelliher, Stephen Morrissey, Darragh Moloney, Ruairi O’Sullivan, John Downey, Tadhg Reen, Cillian Litchfield, Niall Cassidy, Gearoid O’Doherty, Andrew Morrissey, Donal O’Brien, Barry Lyons, Ronan Gilsenan.  Substitutes: Stephen Ryan for Donal O’Brien, Killian O’Riordan for John Downey.

Juvenile Academy

U5

Another good session last weekend, our last indoor session of the season. We had lots of games and movement to develop our skills. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part, especially our players of the week, Anna and Kai.

U7 Boys

Well done to Dara Moriarty who won our player of the week. All the u7s are improving every week, keep up the practicing at home and see you all next Sunday for our first outdoor training session, at St. Pats GAA Grounds, Blennerville.

U8 Girls

We were delighted to have 20 girls training on Sunday morning and welcomed Ella Sayers to the group. With such a busy group thanks to the parents we roped in as goalies for some fun scoring games. The girls are practicing all their skills weekly, they are getting fitter and faster by the week.

We split to older and younger groups for matches to finish, the girls are really grasping the concept and enjoying team play. Amazing talent by Sadie Hennessy at the junior end and great spirit and tackling by Natalie to win her first player of the week trophy at the senior end. We look forward to getting back to our home grounds in St Pats Blennerville next Sunday morning.

When we get the hang of playing on grass we’ll organise some friendly girls’ matches. Our girls will also be eligible to play mixed go games with under 7s or under 9s as the season progresses.  Go St Pats!

U9 Boys

We practiced our soloing, hand passing, we also practiced our kicking at goals and sidestepping, we had great fun training for fast reactions. We finished with a fantastic game where a last minute goal for the colours won the day.

Congratulations to Flynn who won the crossbar challenge and earned himself 2 euro for his mornings work. See you all again next Sunday in st pats.

U11

Our U11’s had a great session in the sunshine at the MTU Astro last Sunday. We started with a warm-up lap where the lads were put through their paces by our minor star player Ben Sharp.

Then after some sprints, agility and pick up drills with Michael, Fiacc, John and Ben, we went into some small sided games where players worked on their support play and tackling.

We then finished with a full game where the “Bridge” team in green built what look like was an unassailable lead. However, the “Windmill” team in red fought back and brought it to a one score game but the Bridge boys held on.

We host Kerins O’Rahillys in the last of our U11 Tralee/St Brendan’s Board League games this Thursday evening. Time TBC later in the week.

We will return to St Pats grounds for training next Sunday with the time also TBC later next week. Our county league will start the following Thursday night April 14th. Keep up the practice at home. We can see some of the lads skills are improving drastically so keep up the good work!

U12 Girls

Our u12’s played their second match in the North Kerry league away to Abbeydorney on a very wet and windy Wednesday evening.

Abbeydorney started off the stronger side getting the first 2 scores of the game and controlling the game for the first 10 minutes.

A great kick out from our goalie Eve O Sullivan to Safira in centre back who burst through to feed a great ball into our forward line where Ailbhe scored a lovely point to get St. Pats on the score board. This settled our girls who started to show great skill and team effort.

It was a tight and exciting game with every player putting in a valuable effort in every position on the field. Once again Eve O Sullivan played outstanding in goals with great saves and finding her players on every kick out.

Our backs Chloe Passway, Lucy Smith, Grace Costello, Safira Ekrin, and Niamh Murphy were solid in defence winning the ball and getting it into our 2 midfielders Sarah Greaney and Aisling 0’Mahoney who worked tirelessly throughout the game on and off the ball getting into great positions to feed the ball into our forward line of Kaela Reidy, Saorlaith Costello, Ailbhe Hennessy, Alannah O Mahoney, Meaghan Barrero and Erika Balode who fought hard and put the Abbeydorney defence under severe pressure.

We saw lovely points from Ailbhe, Meaghan and Alannah. Meaghan was on top of her game sneaking 2 goals past the abbeydorney goalie.

In the second half the coaches made a few changes bringing Niamh Murphy into the forward line where she planted the ball into the back of the net. In the last seconds of the game Alannah popped the ball over the bar to level the game on the final whistle.

Well done to all the girls on a fantastic game and great team effort.

Team: Eve O Sullivan, Grace Costello, Lucy Smyth, Chloe Passway, Safira Ekrin, Niamh Murphy, Sarah Greaney, Aisling O Mahoney, Ailbhe Hennessy, Alannah O Mahoney, Kaela Reidy, Meaghan Barrero, Saorlaith Costello and Erika Balode.

Our next game is at home to Listowel Emmets on Wednesday evening at 5.30.

U13 Boys

Our under 13’s played their second game in the County League with an away game against Moyvane. While the first half was very competitive the second half was dominated by Moyvane and we found it hard to get any attacking momentum going resulting in a good win for Moyvane.

We would remind any player not registered to please register. Registration can be completed on foireann.ie and further information is available on the club website www.stpatsgaaclub.com.

Our U13’s play away to Duagh in their U13 County League at 6pm on the 10th of April.

U15

Our 15’s were defeated by Moyvane last Wednesday. Our U15’s play away to St Michael’s Foilmore in their U15 County League Round 2 at 7pm on the 6th of April.

Minors

Our Minors play at home to Currow in their Round 5 of their Minor Football League at 7pm on the 4th of April.

Our Minors play away for their Round 4 game against Dromid/Waterville at 7pm on the 7thof April.

Seniors

In sunny but cool conditions St Pats started off their scoring with 3 points one from Kieran Hurley, one from Fergal O Brien and another from Brendan Poff. St Senan’s got a point and also a free was given and taken which added another point.

David O Callaghan scored another point for St Pats. As St Pat’s led Fergal O Brien came up the field to score a goal. St Senan’s replied with a point. St Pats continued to score with two points from Kieran Hurley.

David O Callaghan was awarded two frees one after another and converted both into points for St Pats. Brendan Poff scored a point for St Pats, as the minutes counted down to half time Luke Mulligan scored a goal and the half time whistle blew. The Halftime score stood at St Pats 2-09 to St Senan’s 0-03

The second half began and for a while it was St Senan’s who were scoring with points from a number of players and a free in which was turned into a point for St Senan’s. St Pats got their start when Kieran Hurley got a free and put a point on the scoreboard. St Senan’s scored a point again and then a goal quickly after.

St Pat’s Kieran Hurley replied with two points of his own. St Senan’s scored again another two point’s one from a free. St Pat’s still in the lead they added another two points one from Brendan Poff and another from David O Callaghan. The final Whistle blew and the score line stood at St Pat’s 2-14 to St Senan’s 1-11.

Each player played their part in this quick but exciting game, onwards and upwards for the seniors. Well done to all who played or came on during the match.

Our seniors play in their Credit Union Senior Football County League Round 3 away to Dromid Pearses at 6.30pm on the 10th of April.

We finished up with a game of Backs and Forwards focussing on the lads being able to play in their positions. Well done everyone.

U13 boys: Na Gaeil Green played Ballymac last Sunday evening in the Co. League Round 2 at 6pm in Killeen. Great sporting game with both sides working very hard. Some fantastic scores were got by both sides and the defending was excellent and disciplined throughout.

Well done to our lads who just seemed to take their scores that bit better on the day and came out worthy winners in the end. Goalie kick outs were excellent also. Final score 3-17 to 3-0 in favour of Na Gaeil.

Na Gaeil White played at 7pm and again a very tough game. Na Gaeil started better but every time we seemed to be on top, Ballymac came back with fine scores to tighten the game up. Na Gaeil’s midfield was outstanding tonight giving a great transition from our defence to our forwards. Scores were taken very well and defence was again very disciplined.

Goalie kick outs were excellent making it easy for us to build the attack. That said Ballymac got it back to 3 points in the second half but our lads raised the standard again and finished that bit stronger. Final score was Na Gaeil 5-14, Ballymac 3-7. Thanks to Ballymac for two fine games.

Sponsored: Protecting Your Skin As The Sun Arrives This Spring

.

Mary O’Donnell on the medical-grade sunscreens available at the Cosmetic and Hair Restoration Clinic at the Bon Secours in Tralee to protect your skin as the sun arrives this spring…

WE have had a great week of sunshine and we are starting to feel the warmth coming through!

While sunshine will give us some much needed vitamin D, we all know that time spent in the sun makes our skin age faster than normal, evidenced by wrinkles and pigmentation.

To protect your skin, I recommend applying sunscreen to your face every day, all year long, 365 days a year.

At CHRC here at Bon Secours, we stock medical-grade sunscreens that are paraben and sulfate free.

My favourite is award-winning Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 40, a sheer physical sunscreen that provides powerful broad-spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

It uses a combination of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and moisturising vitamin E and is packed with free-radical-quenching antioxidants, including a stable vitamin C, resveratrol, grape seed extract and glutathione.

It is available with or without a tint. The versatile tint blends beautifully on the skin creating a sheer healthy glow.

In preparation for summer, and in anticipation of getting into the summer wardrobe, we have more and more people coming into the clinic to treat pigmentation on their arms, hands, faces and décolleté, to return freckled, sun damaged skin to brighter, clearer skin.

Our Versa Intense Pulse Light photo-facial uses a broad spectrum of light to target pigmentation. This non invasive treatment will improve sun damage, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation with minimal downtime and discomfort.

Our IPL photo facial works to address brown and red discoloration because its spectrum of light causes minimal injury to the thickness of the epidermis but targets pigmentation and broken capillaries at its base.

These pigment and vascular structures absorb particular wavelengths of light, which allows damage only to the unwanted discoloration leaving the rest of the skin intact. The process allows minimal side effects and minimal downtime and leaves you with brighter, clearer-looking skin.

To find out more about how to prepare your skin for summer, contact us at CHRC at chrc@bonsecours.ie or 086 0786120.

A Remarkable Double Completed By Tralee Warriors

.
Warriors captain Fergal O’Sullivan with the trophy after the win on Saturday night.

GARVEY’S Tralee Warriors are waking up today as InsureMyVan.ie Super League champions.

The Tralee side completed a remarkable double — having won the National Cup in January — winning 78-72 in the final over C&S Neptune at the National Basketball Arena last night.

Trailing 28-25 after the first quarter, Warriors kept up the pressure but still ended up 42-38 down at half-time. In fact, at the three quarter mark they still lagged behind, 60-54.

It wasn’t until under four minutes to go that Warriors took the lead for the first time and they expanded that lead to win by 78 to 72. A monumental win then for Warriors, one that’ll be celebrated long into next week in town.
