.
The CBS The Green soccer team.

THE CBS The Green senior soccer team have qualified for the Munster A final following a thrilling victory over Gaelcholaiste Mhuire AG.

The Green established an early lead going up 2-0 inside 20 minutes through goals from Ryan Guerin and Cian Brosnan, a lead they held going in at half time.

Gaelcholaiste struck back quickly in the second half and were level inside 15 minutes. The rest of the game was a very tense affair with both teams giving their all.

.

After 120 minutes the sides were still deadlocked at 2-2 so proceeded to penalties. Our keeper Dimitar Dimatrov pulled off a sensational save from Gaelcholaiste’s fifth penalty which enabled our team captain Cian Brosnan to step up and coolly slot the winning penalty.

CBS will play De La Salle from Waterford in the final next week, venue to be decided.

Billy Ryle: Figures Show Applications To College Are Down On Last Year

.

Career Guidance Counsellor and Educational Commentator, Billy Ryle on the interim statistics released by the CAO which heralds good news for college applicants…

Interim figures released by the Central Applications Office (CAO) suggest that the rush to college may be levelling off.

The data covers the period up to 1st March, the closing date for amending course choices. 78,012 applications have been lodged with the CAO, down 1,164 on the same time last year.

With the economy flourishing, it seems that more Leaving Cert candidates are seriously considering the ‘world of work,’ apprenticeships, traineeships and further education as alternatives to the CAO route.

It looks as if the final number of CAO applications, which will be released later in the year, will be less than last’s years record number of 84,526.

Continued below…

.

The significant decrease in the number of mature applicants (23yrs or older) is further indication of the growth in employment. In total, there are 6,587 mature applicants, down by 2,140 or 24.5% on last year’s number.

The interim data will change slightly when late applications are taken into account and when the Change of Mind facility closes on 1st July at 5pm.

The majority of CAO applicants will be permitted to use the Change of Mind facility when it opens on 5th May to add, remove or re-order course choices, which will result in changes to the figures released for 1st March. Late applications are also accepted up to 1st May at 5pm.

Despite the decrease in CAO applications, competition for prestigious courses will again be intense if the grade inflation of the past two years is allowed for a third consecutive year.

The points race will be further fuelled by the promise to Leaving Cert students that the overall grades will be no lower than the past two years.

The guarantee was given after students argued that they would be at a disadvantage in competing with applicants from 2020 and 2021 if the playing field was not levelled.

On average, the 2022 Leaving Cert class can expect to receive at least 60 CAO points more than they would have achieved in 2019.

It will bring more CAO applicants up to very high, if not maximum, points levels, putting pressure on courses where competition is always very keen.

One wonders if it wouldn’t be wiser to return to the pre-Covid marking schemes and accept that 2020 and 2021 were abnormal years.

The relatively high number of 2021 applicants who deferred their place until 2022 could cause less place to be available this year in sought after courses.

Applications from other EU countries and from Northern Ireland and Britain are also up.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine may deter Irish students from travelling abroad to mainland Europe for third level education. On the plus side, Minister Simon Harris plans to provide extra places to ease the pressure on points.

Additional places are being targeted at courses in high demand. For example, there will be about 60 extra places in first year undergraduate medicine.

Extra places in 2020 and 2021 ensured that 50% of honours degree applicants received their top choice and up to 80% received one of their top three choices. That should be Minister Harris’ aim again this year.

Disciplines that have seen a surge in first preference applications include environment, up 35%, arts/humanities, up 6%, architecture/construction, up 11%, computing up 6%, with 3,829 applications.

As expected, a staggering 4,025 first preference applications have been lodged for engineering, much the same as last year. There is a 7% drop for primary education, compared with a 2% rise for post-primary.

Interest in health-related courses is down 12%, including a 27% fall in nursing after two difficult years of front-line care. But, against that, dentistry is up 12pc and medicine is up 1pc.

The “green wave” of applications for environment courses is up by 35%. Business/Administration is down by 3%, although it still registered a massive 8,492 first preference applications.

Applications are very much on par with current trends in a very healthy employment environment.

Applicants are keeping a very close eye on the jobs market and are acutely aware that a good qualification is a passport to a successful career.

Prospects for the 2022 Leaving Cert class look very promising. Except for a few very competitive quota-based courses, there will be a third level course on offer for the vast majority of CAO applicants. That’s how it should be!

Many times throughout the match the score was even. Imperials played an amazing game and kept a strong hold throughout despite St. Mary’s very strong team.

In the 3rd quarter Imperials displayed amazing defence skills.

The score was 24-24 with seconds to go. Unfortunately, St. Mary’s got the winning basket just on the whistle.

St. Mary’s 38-28 Tralee Imperials (05/03/22)

U14 T1 were away to Castleisland for the first of 2 matches this weekend. The first half was a tight affair with both defences well on top and scores at a premium.

Imperials led 13 – 7 at half time with scores coming from Emily Flynn, Sophie Mitchell, Anna Chute and Saoirse McCarthy.

The third quarter was a purple patch for Castleisland with Imperials struggling with Castleisland’s full court press. Imperials ended the quarter 28 – 17 behind with Imperials scores coming from Ciara Costello and Emily Flynn.

Imperials rallied in the last quarter and played some good team basketball finally overcoming Castleisland’s pressure. Scores coming from Anna O’Sullivan, Priya O’Donovan and Sophie Mitchell. The girls were never able to bridge the gap however and tired in the last few minutes. The game ended 38 – 28 to Castleisland.

Top Scorers – Sophie Mitchell 6

Tralee Imperials 10-26 St. Paul’s (06/03/22)

The Girls were out again less than 15 hours after their loss to St. Mary’s, this time against a very strong St Paul’s team. Again this was a game where both defences were well on top. Strong inside defensive work from Emily Flynn and Anna O’Sullivan kept St. Paul’s to 6 points in the first quarter. On the other end Imperials struggled to convert with 4 points coming from Saoirse McCarthy and Sophie Mitchell.

The second quarter was again neck and neck with Anna Chute scoring well for imperials. Half time score 10 – 8 to St Pauls.

The third quarter Imperial continued to play high pressure defence which resulted in numerous steals and turnovers. Unfortunately, the girls were unable to concert these chances and ended the quarter 16- 10 behind.

In the final quarter Imperials gave it their all and put pressure on every St Paul’s ball resulting in numerous turnovers.  Despite some excellent play which produced some good scoring opportunities Imperials were unable to convert. It was unfortunately one of those quarters where someone put a lid on the basket and good shot after good shot rolled around the rim and fell out. Fatigue finally caught up with the girls and St. Paul’s were able to get a few late baskets on the fast break to see the match out. Final score 26 – 10.

Top scorers
Saoirse McCarthy, Anna Chute 4
Sophie Mitchell 2

A disappointing weekend of basketball for the girls but an excellent learning experience and a lot of positives for the girls to build on.

U14 Girls T2

U14 GIRLS T2

St. Paul’s 28-27 Tralee Imperials (06/03/22)

Our U14 Girls Team 2 played their final league game of the season on Sunday morning against St Pauls at Kilcummin.

With narrow defeats in their recent games, both teams were looking to get back to winning ways.

Quarter 1 began well for Imperials, a strong defensive effort led by Naomi Osibodu and Katie Enright providing the foundation for some fast breaks.

Imperials got on the scoreboard early in the quarter with excellent scores from Juliette Gleeson and Caoilinn Culloo. Imperials were really limiting the St Pauls offence with some great defensive pressure. Maria Walsh and Naomi Osibodu were really to the fore during the quarter and added to the Imperials account.

Imperials with a slender 2-point lead of 10 – 8 at the end of Quarter 1.

Quarter 2 began with St Pauls taking control of the game. Imperials were really on the back foot, defending well but struggling to keep St Pauls at bay.

Grace Reilly opened the Imperials account early in the quarter after a strong run from defence. This was to be the only Imperials score of the quarter as St Pauls
exerted a massive influence on the game. St Pauls executing a full court press with Imperials struggling to overcome the pressure. St Pauls added some scores on the board to race into a 20 – 12 lead at the end of quarter 2. Imperials with everything to do to stay in the game.

In quarter 3 Imperials began to get to grips with the St Pauls threat, Imperials overcoming the press and beginning to transition at pace. Sarah Slattery opened the Imperials account with a massive score, lifting the Imperials team with a noticeable rise in volume from the strong Imperials support.

Naomi Osibodu added to the Imperials account during the quarter after a great run and fantastic layup, Naomi having the game of her life and contributing massively to the effort. With the Imperials revival gathering momentum, Caoilainn Culloo stormed into the game adding 4 to the Imperials account leaving the score line at 26 – 20 at the end of quarter 3.

When the story of the U14 Team 2 season is told, all will know that the girls are never beaten until the final whistle blows, Sunday morning was no different, the 4th quarter being a classic with both teams giving it everything, Imperials nudging their way back into contention, with both sets of supporters creating a memorable atmosphere for the girls.

Imperials also limited St Pauls to 2 during the quarter with a massive defensive effort, while creating multiple opportunities in offence.
St Pauls were also in foul trouble mid-way through the quarter with Imperials visiting the free throw line.

With 4:54 on the clock, Imperials needed something to get back in the game, the team rallied brilliantly led by Grace Reilly. Grace did what Grace does, brought the game to the opposition and lifted her teammates in the process. Grace drove continuously at the St Paul’s defence creating opportunities and drawing fouls. Grace added 3 in succession from the free throw line to move Imperials within 5 of St Paul’s.

Aoife O’Connell added to the Imperials account with a superb score after strong defensive work from Naomi Osibodu.

As the clock ticked down to full time, Imperials were back to the free throw line. Naomi Osibodu with the free throws and 55.4 on the clock. With the pressure at its highest, Naomi added both free throws to move Imperials to within 1 of St Pauls. The final seconds were scintillating with both teams giving it 100%. St Paul’s taking the deserved win on a score line of 28 – 27.

Congratulations to St Pauls on a fantastic win and for a very enjoyable and competitive game,

Thanks as always to the Table Officials and Referee.

Thanks to the supporters of both teams who created a great atmosphere for the girls.

As the old proverb goes, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, that step for our U14s began on May 11th 2021, when
summer basketball began for Imperials. It’s been a fantastic journey with all of the twists and turns that we expect from the basketball season.

As the season now draws to a close, Brenda, Leanne and William would like to acknowledge this exceptional group of girls.

The girls playing 10 games in the league, winning 7 and losing the remaining 3 by a cumulative total of 4 points ( 2 + 1 +1).

As we say every week, it’s not the winning or losing that counts, it’s the team work, the effort, the application, the bond, and most of all that team spirit, that was in evidence in abundance. In this regard, the girls have been amazing. The girls have been a credit to themselves and their families and wonderful ambassadors for Tralee Imperials. We’re proud to have been part of the journey. We look forward to seeing all of the girls back on the court soon, in the Blue and White of Tralee Imperials.

A final word of thanks to KABB and our own Tralee Imperials Committee who make all of this possible.

Rathmore 45-66 Tralee Imperials (06/03/22)

On Sunday 6th March we travelled to Rathmore for our fourth county league game. Due to injuries we were again shorthanded and only had five u16 players available. We were delighted to have Ruairi and Conor join us from the U14 team and they proved crucial in giving the boys some rest during the game.

We started the game very well and jumped out to an early lead with Sean Og and Tomas prominent in the first quarter. Rathmore made a comeback towards the end but we went in to the first break ahead 23-28.

William and Sean Heaslip stepped up the defense in the second quarter and with strong rebounding from Tadgh we extended our lead but with tiredness creeping in we allowed Rathmore to end the half level at 33 points apiece.

Ruairi and Conor from the U14s team were very solid in this quarter and this allowed us to rest some of our starters.

We stepped up our defense even more in the second half and only conceded 12 points in the whole half. Our fast break game was outstanding and we created a lead early in the third that we never relinquished. We led 52-41 at the end of the third quarter and saw out the game in the fourth to win 66-45. Conor got a great block near the end and Ruairi hit a jump shot to cap off a great team performance.

The boys gained great experience which will stand to them in the future.

Fun at the Austin Stacks Race Night on Friday. Photo by Adrienne McLoughlin

RACE NIGHT: Our thanks to Adrienne McLoughlin for the following report. There was a good turnout for the re-scheduled Austin Stacks GAA Race Night which was held at the clubhouse in Connolly Park on Friday 4th March.

This event was organised to raise funds to alleviate the costs of running the juvenile boys and girls football and finance pitch maintenance and upgrades.

The operation of the event on the night was co-ordinated by  Fundraising Events Group with their Sales and Marketing Director, Jimmy Bouchier operating the night’s ten races.  The last race was an auction race with the bids being taken by Eddie Barrett.

The Senior Mens Team were in attendance with The Bishop Moynihan Cup (Co. Championship)  and the Ladies Senior team were also well represented.

Well done to the organising committee who put in a huge amount of time and effort in promoting and  running the event.

On the night the race betting and prize presentations were conducted by Bernie Mannix, Mary Fitzmaurice, Marie Jordan and Lauren Barrett.

Vouchers were presented to Angelina Moriarty and Ger Breen for being the Best Dressed Racegoers on the night.  Some photos attached.

The next fundraising event on the calendar is the Golf Classic on Friday 25th March at Tralee Golf Club.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 4-9; St. Pats 0-8.

With a narrow one point defeat against John Mitchels in the opening round and round 2 against Ballymac postponed to another date, our round 3 game in the Tralee/St. Brendans League, played under lights at the Mitchels pitch on Saturday evening (5th March), saw us back to our winning ways with a near perfect performance from all 20 who lined out during the course of the hour.

Pats went into an early two points lead before Gearóid Fitzgerald opened our account with a goal in the 9thminute. Cian Purcell then pointed for us in the 16th minute but Pats added three more to leave them ahead by one (0-5 to 1-1) as half time approached. But in the closing minutes of the half we scored a goal and two points – Conor Myers with the goal and a point and the other point by Gearóid Sheehan – to leave us ahead by four at the break (2-3 to 0-5.

We had the perfect start to the second half. Barry Shanahan won the throw-in, passed to his mid-field colleague, Michael O’Donnell who found Conor Myers, who linked up with Gearóid Sheehan with the ball eventually finding Gearóid Fitzgerald who pointed after just 20 seconds.

Further points followed from Michael O’Donnell, Cian Purcell and Gearóid Fitzgerald with Pats adding three of their own by the 51st minute which left us still with that four points lead which we had at half time.

However that was Pats last score of the game while we went on to add two more goals and two points during the remaining ten minutes of the game. David Mannix scored the two points with our two goals coming late on. Eoghan Carroll was already giving a man-of-the-match performance before he scored our third goal with the final score and goal of the game coming from second half substitute, Donagh McKivergan.

Team: Ben Quilter, Luke Chester, BarryWalsh, Niall Fitzmaurice, Eoghan Carroll (1-0), Donagh McMahon, Dara Barry Walsh, Barry Shanahan, Michael O’Donnell (0-1), David Fitzmaurice, David Mannix (0-2), Gearóid Sheehan (0-1), Cian Purcell (0-2), Gearóid Fitzgerald (1-2), Conor Myers (1-1).

Subs used: Ruairí O’Connell (1m), John Murphy (40m), Andrew Morrissey (46m), Donagh McKivergan (49m) (1-0), Killian Litchfield (52m).

Just after the start of the game Donagh McMahon suffered a back injury and had to be replaced. We all wish Donagh a full and speedy recovery.

It was good to see Ben Quilter and Cian Purcell making their Senior debuts as well as Ruairí O’Connell and Killian Litchfield who made their first Senior starts in the opening round against John Mitchels a fortnight ago.

The first round of the Co. League takes place on St. Patricks Day (Thursday). The game in Connolly Park against Gneeveguilla throws in at 2pm.

Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club Membership 2022

Membership Due

Membership fees for 2022 are now due. Club membership is open to Adult Players, Adult Non-Players, Juvenile Players and Families and New Members are always welcome.

Membership can be paid online at the following link:

https://member.clubforce.com/memberships_cart_m.asp?LL_ID=2602&intMF_ID=9476&fbclid=IwAR0TifngeTCFZ_TKbKjBeMj1nzJATqvxM-2B3q2-QmsZbn7sSyAVRWeV67I#Anchor

The monies received is funnelled towards the maintenance of facilities, playing equipment, affiliation fees, insurance, utility bills, team preparation and other administrative costs. Our GAA Club is reliant on all members paying their subscriptions to cover these running costs as the GAA at Central Level (Croke Park) or County Level do not provide grants, finance, or assistance to cover these general running costs.

The membership fee rates for 2022, as set by the Club Executive, are detailed in the attachment.

Why has the membership price increased?

Our membership rates have not increased in a couple of years, while in the interim, the running costs of the club have increased significantly on items like utility costs, affiliation and registration fees, referee fees, team preparation, equipment, and insurance, as part of the day-to-day running costs of the club. We are also conscious that further costs increases are extremely likely in 2022.

In addition, our club developments at Paddy Burke Memorial Park are continuing and we want to ensure as much of our fundraising activities goes towards the development rather than the day-to-day costs of running the club.

Finally, while we are delighted to see so many people using our walking track facility as it provides an excellent safe and illuminated amenity for the community. We do require walkers to be Walking Track Members to help cover the maintenance, lighting and associated costs required to sustain the facility.

Walking Track Membership is automatically included as part of your 2022 GAA Club Membership benefits.

Membership Day – Sunday, March 20th, 2022

We plan to have a Club Membership Day at Paddy Burke Memorial Park on March 20th, 2022; the day of our first home County League game. People will be able to join in person on that day by cash, cheque or card.

Na Gaeil GAA Club News

.

Senior Team: Last Saturday our senior team had their first game of the season when they hosted Ardfert in the Town Board\St. Brendans Board league. Na Gaeil led by 2 points at halftime and although Ardfert reduced the deficit to 1 point early in the second half Na Gaeil added 6 points without reply to pull away and win by 1-13 to 0-9. It was a memorable day for young Jack Doyle as he made his first senior start and he can be very pleased with his performance. Well done too to John Kearney who came on as a sub for his first taste of senior action. Team: Aidan Quirke, Jack Doyle, Niall O’Mahony, Damien Bourke, Jimmy O’Sullivan, Ryan O’Neill, Andrew Barry (0-1), Eoin Doody, Fergal Barry, Seamus Looney (0-1), Dan Goggin (1-1), James O’Connor (0-1), Jack Sheehen, Darragh Devine (0-9, 8F), Cian Devine. Subs: Tomás Hanafin, Liam Óg Kingston, Declan Cooney & John Kearney. Next Sunday 13th March our seniors are away to Kerins O’Rahillys at 12.30pm in the next round of the Tralee/St. Brendans senior league.

Social: Na Gaeil Celebration/Social evening was held in Meadowlands Hotel on Saturday last. This was a hugely successful occasion thanks to the efforts of Cathy Carey, Margaret Doody, Jenny Sheehy and Therese Keating who worked tirelessly with the hotel over the last few weeks to make the event a resounding success.Na Gaeil were celebrating, from a football point of view, our most successful year ever. As Intermediate County champions, Intermediate Munster Champions and being promoted to Senior status we had much to celebrate.

Our senior team and mentors were feted by all the speakers and were congratulated, by special guest, Pat O’Sullivan, chairperson of the Co. Board as he presented each player with his medals. Conor Kavanagh kept the night running smoothly and named Enda O’Connor as Footballer of the year.

This was a very popular choice as evidenced by the reception the nomination got from his teammates and general guests. Conor, on naming Clubman of the year, explained that there were five, the senior mentors and coaches, Mark Bourke, Niall Lucey, Moss Whelan, Paul Daly and Niall O’Meara.

This group had put in a long year & had achieved their goals.Eoin Doody, senior captain, made a special award on behalf of the senior team to Paul Daly for his role as mentor and player within the group. He explained that after a particular game the opposition captain asked if Paul was one of Na Gaeil’s Kerry minors.

That in itself sums up Paul. Conor thanked the Meadowlands Hotel for a most successful evening which included a fantastic setting, a fabulous meal & outstanding service. Nothing more could be asked. Kerry Balloons added to the occasion with a fine display of Green and White balloons.

He thanked our sponsors, Louis Beirne, Declan Costello, The Rose Hotel, Ballygarry Hotel and Ballyseedy Garden center. Conor had a special welcome for the many players from the club’s ladies senior team who came and enjoyed the night.

Following a moments silence Fr. Padraig Walsh said the grace and remembered our ex chairpersons who died during the year, Denis Reen and Harold Behan and all other members and supporters who passed away during the year. May they rest in peace.

Na Gaeil TV: Na Gaeil TV launched a new Youtube show last Saturday called “The Green Flag”.  Its a showcase for everything Na Gaeil. Catch it on Na Gaeil’s Facebook page and other social media outlets.

Please come along & support Gráinne Quirke, Siún & Ruadhán Clifford, Rory Reen, Jack Canty, Darragh Morris & Maoilseachlainn Warr, who’ll perform “Irish Lessons”, a drama from the pen of our very own Mary Quirke.

Lotto results: Lotto Tue 1st March. No winner. Numbers drawn were 5, 8, 17, 28. Lucky dip winners of €20 each were Mary Lacey, George Denis, Seán O’Connor, Adrian O’Connor & Eoin Doody. Next week’s jackpot will be €6,550.

Congratulations: Well done to the club’s Sorcha Casey & Emer O’Sullivan who were part of the Gaelcholáiste Ciarraí team which won the U19 schools basketball All-Ireland last week in Tallaght. Hard luck to Róisín O’Mahony and Elsie Peig Rogers who were part of the Gaelcholáiste Ciarraí U16 team who were pipped by Intermediate School Killorglin by just a single point in their final, also in Tallaght.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

.

U7 Boys and Girls

The Tralee Parnells under 7s completed their fifth week of indoor hurling on Saturday, the excitement and enthusiasm from these young players was great to see and the training session was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  A special thank you to the volunteer parents and youth coaches who work with the coaches to make it run all the more smoothly. Congratulations to this week’s player of the week Aoife O’Gorman and last week’s player of the week Mattie Quill, well done to both players.  The group continue to meet on Saturday at 3pm in the MTU Sports hall.  New players are always welcome to come along.  The club can provide a hurley and helmet and it is not necessary pay the membership fee while trying it out for a few weeks.

Senior Hurling

On a lovely fresh spring day in ideal conditions for hurling at this time of year, our Senior Hurlers started their league campaign with a comprehensive win away to Dr Crokes of Killarney on Sunday. The backbone of the team consisted of our six county representatives together with our young academy players who were the heroes of that famous U21 North Kerry victory a few months ago made up a young and fit Parnells team. The team had the better of the exchanges throughout the first half but failed to convert a lot of good play into scores. The score line at half time didn’t reflect their strength on the field with Parnells leading 0.06 to 0.03 at the break.

The second half was a different story as Parnells began to find their range and knocked over some excellent scores from all over the field, the pick of them was a wonderful goal from Daragh Reen, a move that started from our corner back Tim Kelliher and was worked up the field with pace and precision.  The contest all but ended on fifteen minutes when Crokes were reduced to 14 men after a poor tackle on Cathal Dunne who was thankfully able to carry on afterwards.

Crokes showed their competitive spirit fighting all the way to the final whistle as they knocked over a few points near the end of the game but it was in vain as Parnells ran out winners on a score line of 1.14 to 0.08.   It was difficult to pick out a stand out performer on the day as it was an excellent team performance but a huge well done to all the young debutants who really shone on their first day out at senior level.

Team as they lined out: Mark Ryall, Tim Kelliher, Tadhg Brick, Tadhg Reen, Stephen Morrissey 6. Luke Barrett, Morgan Madden, Cathal Dunne, Cillian Litchfield, Darragh Maloney, Andrew Morrissey, Brian Lonergan, Jack Doyle, Darragh Reen, Luke Chester. Subs used: Gearoid O’Doherty (for Luke Chester); Niall Cassidy (for Darragh Maloney); Sean Urquhart (for Andrew Morrissey); Barry Lyons (for Stephen Morrissey); Tommy O’Connor (for Tadhg Reen)

Round two will take place next Sunday 13th March when Parnells will be at home against Crotta O’Neills.

Weekend Results

It was a mixed weekend of results for Hurling and Camogie in Kerry. Congratulations to the County team who had a comprehensive win over Meath at Austin Stack Park in the League.  Parnells were again well represented with five players named on the team sheet. Unfortunately, we pass on commiserations to Clanmaurice on loosing the Junior A Camogie All Ireland final by the narrowest of margins against Eoghan Rua from Derry.

Juvenile Academy

U5

We had great numbers on Sunday morning for our under 5’s academy. We had plenty of fun games along with movement and ball drills. It was great to see all the boys and girls having so much fun. Well done to our players of the week Laila and Taylor.

U7

We had a much improved session this morning in Tralee I.T. The extra coaches made a massive difference, we played a few games that incorporated ball skills and there was a massive improvement straight away.
A big thanks to John, Noel and James who helped out massively today
Player of the week was Ensar Maligi who only took up football lately but there’s no doubt his practicing at home.

U8 Girls

We had a fantastic turnout of 18 girls on Sunday in the Kerry Sports Academy. We welcomed more new girls to our growing group. The emphasis today was on as many touches of the ball as possible with a ball in hand for all the girls. We worked on our skills including evasion & fundamental movements. The girls are enjoying the high energy sessions and are making friends. Fantastic effort as always by Emma Higgins who won the player of the week trophy. Great practice is paying off!

Looking forward to another session in the hall See you all next Sunday at 11am.

U9 Boys

The u9s had another strong turnout this morning where we practiced our tackling, kicking, and soloing in slaloms. It is evident all the boys are practicing as their skills are improving visibly each week. We finished with another very competitive game with Ben getting the winning goal with the last kick of the game. See you all next week again.

U10 Girls

U10 Girls trained Sunday morning at Kerry Sports Academy. 12 girls played fun games coached by Noel, Labhraidh, Monica, Kieran and Nigel. They worked mainly on their hand passing finishing with a 6 a side match.  Well done to Emma Gilbride this weeks player of the week. Emma worked hard today on all drills and showed great enthusiasm and determination as always. Well done Emma and everyone keep up the good work and keep up the practice at home. See you all next week.

U11 Boys

We had a great turnout of 19 boys for Sunday’s session. After a collective warmup, we then broke the lads into 4 pods with all players working on the high catch, pick up, shooting, solo and agility work. We then finished with 2 small sided games which were very entertaining and the boys really enjoyed them. We will train again next Sunday at the MTU at 11am. A final word of credit to our club executive who donated the proceeds of this week’s lotto to UNICEF for humanitarian aid for Ukraine. A very kind and generous gesture!

U13

U13’s had their first game today, and it was a very tightly contested first half, with some good interactive passing from end to end, and the teams went in at half time all square. With a few changes at half time and then facing the wind St Pats had to stay strong, they dropped a few points, but then pulled back a goal now playing against a team that were rattled with the talented passing and determination of st pats. But with a few tough challenges st pats gave away a few frees later on, and went down by 2 points. All in all a great team game from the boys who have only trained together a few times. This team are only going to get stronger the more they play together.

U12/U14 Girls

The girls enjoyed their 2nd training session up in MTU campus on Sunday morning and it was a beautiful fresh morning with plenty of sun shining. We welcomed Eileen Sayers (whom has a few Kerry medals behind her in ladies Gaelic football) to our session this morning and she was very impressed with the girls Stamina and skills.  Denis Healy led the session, with his knowledge of football skills. We practiced the hand pass to the chest on a quick pace, running up and down the field and the pick up while driving themselves into the ball. We also touched on speed whilst running on the field which is very important ,The girls  practiced their soloing using both legs and we finished with rolling the ball to the girls and letting them score in the goals Ye were fantastic girls and well done.

Minors

Our Minors have a BYE in Round 2 of the Minor Football League on the 12th of March.

Tralee/St Brendan’s Senior League Round 3

St Pats 0-08

Austin Stacks 4-10

On a very cold night to play it was not to be St Pat’s night as Austin Stacks came out as victors in this Round 3 game.

The first half started off very fast with both teams fighting for the ball to score the opening shot, it was Austin Stacks who scored first with a goal. Next up Eoin Greaney scored St Pats first point of the game. As each team fought through the cold conditions, Austin Stacks scored again with two points. All was quiet in the game when St Pats Brendan Poff shot to score a point. Another St Pats Point came from Fergal O Brien who also got another chance to add to the scoreboard with a free giving him two points in total. When it looked as if St Pats had a chance to get back into the game, Austin Stacks hit the back of the net with a powerful kick. Brian Murphy added to the scoreboard a point for St Pats while Niall McCarthy had to go off injured. Dylan Griffin replaced Niall McCarthy who did a great job of marking his opponent. In the dying minutes of the first half Austin Stacks kicked the ball over the bar for another point to add to Austin Stacks scores. With the first half finished the score line stood at St Pats 0-05 to Austin Stacks 2-03.

The second half started off with a barrage of scores from Austin Stacks Players to add another four points to the board. Eoin Greaney got a free and scored a point with it, Cormac Lynch also added with a point to the board. With new legs needed Jack Lynch for Cormac Lynch and Cillian Lynch for Martin Savage were brought in to revive the game with young legs. Fergal O Brien came off injured with Conor Enright taking his place. Another two points were added to Austin Stacks score. Gary Savage scored St Pats last point for the rest of the game. Liam Poff exited the game injured, Darragh Moriarty took up his position on the field. Even though marking was strong Austin Stacks still broke through to get a point. As the game continued and minutes counted down Austin Stacks scored two goals in quick succession to finish the game when the final whistle blew on a score line of St Pats 0-08 to Austin Stacks 4-10. Everyone on the team played very well despite the conditions but it wasn’t to be our night. Well done to all for playing.

Good Luck

To Kerry against Mayo in their Round 5 game in Austin Stack Park on Saturday, 12th of March at 7.30pm.

Could we all try get out and practice our hand passes our solos and our press up this week even 10 mins a day won’t take up too much time and with the weather been nice we can get some fresh air too

U11 players currently playing/training with the U13s must attend U 11 training on Sunday morning – while we understand that the U13s play on Sunday afternoon ,please be aware that U11 is your age group and this should be their priority

Under 13 boys

Our 13s had their first competitive outings of the year with Ballmac making the short journey in to Ballyseedy on Sunday. In Division 3 of the Town League our B team had a slow start and leaked a few goals in the 1st half to be 7 points down at the break. Undeterred and with the breeze at their backs in the 2nd half, our lads picked off some great scores to turn it all around and run out victorious in the end by 3 points
FINAL SCORE
B: JM 1 – 14 BMAC 4-2

In Division 1, our lads were against the wind in the first half as well, but were working the ball well off the shoulder to be in control at half time. Ballymac came out with all guns blazing at the start of the 2nd half and really knocked us off our stride for the majority of the 2nd half. We were able to pick off some nice scores towards the end though to leave us comfortable winners in the end

A: JM 5 – 12 BMAC 1-4

Caherleaheen NS Raises €600 To Support Alzheimers Society Of Ireland

.
Demin Day at Caherleaheen NS.

CAHERLEAHEEN NS held Denim Day for Dementia, on Friday last as a fundraiser for the Alzheimers Society of Ireland.

Principal, Mary Connolly explained that “each year, in Ireland over 11,000 people develop dementia. That’s at least 30 people every day and anyone can get dementia – even people in their thirties, forties and fifties, not just our elderly loved ones and friends.”

“We wanted to help the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and  to promote awareness of this  disease among our pupils in a fun, gentle and child-friendly way. Children made posters and our teachers and student council led the promotion in the preceding days,” she said.

“Everyone arrived to school on Denim Day wearing  big smiles, denim dungarees, denim jackets, shirts and jeans, in every shade of blue. Our weekly Dance Friday at break-times is very popular here in Caherleaheen, thanks to the wonder of Spotify. But today Neil Diamond’s ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’ went straight to No.1!  We painted blue symbols on their faces and they danced through their breaks under blue skies. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather,” said Mary.

There was great excitement and anticipation while staff and students collected, counted and bagged all the coins and notes.

The pupils announced that they had collected €460 over the intercom to huge cheers all round the school and they rounded it up to €600 by 2.30pm.

“It really was a huge success and I want to thank everyone, big and small, for their support and generosity,” said Mary Connolly. Scroll down for photos…
