IT’S clear that sixth class pupils will leave with priceless memories of their time at St Brendan’s NS in Blennerville, after a graduation ceremony was held at the school on Tuesday evening.

After a blessing from Fr Francis Nolan and some words from Principal Robbie O’Connell, the pupils showed short video in which each of them looked back on the fun times and declared their hopes for the future.

This provided great entertainment for their families and school staff watching on and afterwards, Mr O’Connell, who is in his first year as Principal of the school, paid tribute to the 18 pupils.

“It’s always sad to see the sixth class pupils leave. This particular group are fun and always animated! They’ll certainly be missed with all the energy they provided. We wish them all the best. With them being my first sixth class in the school, I’m very proud of them.”

Each pupil also received a special hoodie and pen from the school and afterwards posed for photos. Best of luck to them as they prepare to take the next step in their educational journey. Scroll down for photos…

Billy Ryle: CAO ‘Change Of Mind’ Deadline Is Approaching

.

Third level college applicants have until Monday, 1st July to submit a CAO ‘Change of Mind’. Billy Ryle looks at what this entails for students…

CHANGE OF MIND

With the State Exams concluding, the thoughts of exhausted candidates are no doubt turning to holidays, summer jobs and travel. But there is still an important job to be done.

The 80,000 plus applicants to the Central Applications Office (CAO) for a coveted college place must now focus on the CAO “Change of Mind” facility which affords them an opportunity to register a change of course choices online by 5.15pm on Monday next, 1st July.

NOW IS THE TIME

Many applicants may be happy with the original course choices they submitted to CAO by 1st February.

Others may have changed their minds about the courses they would like to study. Whatever an applicant’s reason for submitting a change of mind form now is the time to do so. After the 1st July you can make no further changes to the CAO application form.

Continued below…

.

RESEARCH

If you decide to submit a change of mind form, work on your choices before going online. Don’t tinker with your original list while online as it’s very easy to make a mistake.

Start from scratch and prepare a new list of courses. Check the minimum and special course requirements for each course you are including on the change of mind form.

Don’t list any course which has been cancelled, but you may include any new courses which were announced after the 2018 CAO Handbook was published. All of this information is easily accessible on the CAO website, www.cao.ie.

NEW LIST

When you have finalised your choices, open up your CAO account via the “My Application” facility. Click on “Add Level 8 Course Choices” and/or “Add Level 7/6 Course Choices.”

Then use the “New Courses” list to enter your new course choices. Every choice is important so fill in all ten choices in each category.

STICK or CHANGE

The two course categories – Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degrees) and Level 7/6 (Ordinary Bachelor Degrees/Higher Certificates) are totally separate from each other for the purpose of submitting a change of mind form. You may change one category and leave the second category unchanged or you may change both. On the other hand, you may decide to stick with the choices you submitted by 1st February last.

CHECK ONLINE

Check that your courses have been updated by using the “My Application” facility. You may change your course choices free of charge as often as you wish up to the closing date.

The final change of mind form that you submit is the one that will count for your CAO offers in August, so be very careful to check online before 5.15pm on 1st July to make sure that all is in order.

RESULTS & OFFERS

The Leaving Certificate Examination results will be released on Tuesday, 13th August. Round One offers of college places will be available on the CAO website, www.cao.ie from 2pm on Thursday, 15th August.

The reply date for acceptance is 5.15pm on Friday, 23rd August.

Checklist

• You have until 5.15pm on 1st July to avail of the CAO “Change of Mind” facility

Meadowlands Hotel To Be HQ For International Angling Championships Event In July

.

A MAJOR angling championships competition will have its headquarters in a Tralee hotel next month.

The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers, (IFSA), a 32 county organisation, will host the 2019 Home Nation Shore Angling Championships in Kerry and the Meadowlands Hotel will be the base for the competition.

It takes place yearly on rotation between the four competing countries England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and is due to take place this year in Ireland.

Continued below…

.

The competition will take place from the 3rd to the 6th of July on Kerry beaches.  There are 6 members on each team of Men, Ladies, Under 16s and Under 21s. Each individual on the team will have gone through a qualification process to earn their place on the team. These qualifiers take place prior to the event, and usually start a year in advance.

The competitions for this year’s event are scheduled to take place on Rossbeigh on Friday 5th and Inch on Saturday 6th from 10 am till 3pm each day.

During the completion, the fish lengths are recorded and all fish are released back into the sea, and the most successful anglers earn points for their country. After the two days the scores are calculated and the results are given out at a ceremony back at headquarters in the Tralee hotel.

Twelve Runners Raise Thousands For Kerry Hospice With Marathon Effort

.
The 12 participants after completing the event in Killarney on Saturday.

TWELVE charity runners made the most of the longest day of the year by running a mile in every county in the Republic of Ireland to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation and they’re raised over €9,000 with this year’s event.

Starting in Mitchelstown, on Friday last, the charity runners covered 26 miles across 26 counties in 26 hours, finishing their final mile in Killarney.

This is only the second time that such a unique event has taken place. In 2013, the Great Irish Marathon event raised €6500 towards the building of a 15 bed Specialist Inpatient Palliative Unit in Kerry, in Kerry General Hospital grounds.

Continued below…

.

The time around, 13 participants ran in memory of Killarney native, Patsy O’Keeffe, mother of GIM runner Niamh O’Carroll, who sadly passed away from cancer in November 2018.

The twelve runners who took on the challenge were Niamh O’Carroll, Andrea Thornton, Eoin Murphy, Declan and Patrice O’Mahony, Colm Murphy, Conor Cusack, Felicity Sheehy, Dee Keating, Karen Condon, Sharon Condon and Caroline Corkery.

On the road during the event.

They were fortunate that temperatures were high and skies were clear for their epic 26 hour challenge.

“It was very special to run our 13th mile beneath Newgrange at sunset on the summer solstice and to experience sunrise whilst running on Mullaghmore Beach in Sligo,” reflected Great Irish Marathon founder, Andrea Thornton, a teacher at Mercy Mounthawk.

“Spirits remained high throughout the day and night,  helped in part by the lovely people we met en route. At 2am in Longford, while we were running through the streets of Granard, a local man, clearly surprised to find 12 people in high-vis jackets running towards him, donated to the event. Other people bought us chips in Dublin and offered us water en route. We were spoiled”

The runners concluded their 26 hour marathon at Market Cross at 12 noon on Saturday to the rousing applause of friends, family and supporters.

.

“So far, the event has raised close to €9000 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation and donations are still coming in. We would like to thank everybody who has supported this great cause so far, especially O’Callaghan’s coaches and drivers Ken and Donie who transported the 12 runners around Ireland for their 26 hours of running, providing motivation and support along the way.

Local businesses Mulgrew Respiratory Services and Caroline Corkery Counselling Services have also generously supported the event. THE countdown to the summer holidays is on for Tralee primary schools and in Blennerville they’re keeping themselves busy with activities in the final week.

Tuesday morning saw Anne Culloty, Health Promotion Officer with the HSE, arrive at the school to deliver the Health Promoting Schools Flag.

“There were projects going on in all classes throughout the year, organised by the Health Promoting Committee which is made up of pupils from first to sixth classes,” said Principal Robbie O’Connell.

.

“There are certain criteria to fulfil to get the flag and great credit is due to teacher Ms O’Sullivan who co-ordinated the efforts,” he added.

The flag was presented after the children completed the ‘Daily Mile’ which has been going on every day at the school for the past couple of years.

Tuesday also saw pupils take part in ‘Funky Shoe Day’ where pupils wore a different shoe on each foot. This was held in conjunction with the Walk In My Shoes mental health awareness and education campaign.

“We’re trying to highlight in a subtle way how important it is to walk in the shoes of someone else and be aware that something might by going on in the lives of a fellow pupil and just to be kind really,” said the Principal. Scroll down for photos…

Legal Briefs: Is It Time For One-Off Landlords To Bale Out?

.

WITH house prices on the rise and stricter penalties on the way, Alex Hoffman of Pierse McCarthy Lucey Solicitors asks the question, is it time for one-off landlords to bale out?…

For generations, property was regarded as one of the soundest investments you could make – your money was literally “safe as houses”. Rent would provide a steady income, while the house itself gradually grew in value – at worst it held its own.

The property boom of the noughties brought a whole new dynamic however. Would-be landlords became property speculators.

Stories abounded of houses and apartments being bought off the plans and being flipped on at considerable profit, before they were even completed.

Then came the crash. People who had bought properties with the intention of holding them for a few months and then cashing in on their rise in value now found themselves stuck with properties which they couldn’t sell.

In many cases, people had borrowed heavily to fund their investments and when the market collapsed they had no option but to turn to the rental market. They became the “accidental landlords”.

They had to quickly get to grips with the “dos” and “don’ts” of being a landlord and the new era of regulation and scrutiny brought in by the Residential Tenancies Act 2004.

The Act was widely regarded as swinging the balance of legal favour towards the tenant, and amendments to the Act since then have done little to change that view.

With several, hastily introduced amendments over recent years, mostly designed to further strengthen tenant’s rights and security of tenure in the face of a growing housing crisis, landlords found themselves grappling with an often confusing and overly technical regime and a Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) which they feel is out to get them.

It is any wonder why so many properties have drifted into the world of Airbnb?

On the financial side, the increased rate of income tax, coupled with the introduction of various costs and expenses over the years such as the Non-Principal Private Residence Charge, Local Property Tax, RTB registration fees and Universal Service Charge etc. have all led to ever diminishing returns.

While rental values have certainly recovered in recent years, the fact of the matter remains that unless a person is operating at scale, managing the property themselves and with little or no borrowings to service it is becoming more and more difficult for landlords, particularly those with properties outside of the main urban areas, to justify staying in the game.

For those sitting at home, mulling over their options, they might consider the latest legislative amendment which was signed into law on the 31st of May.

The Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2019 is intended to give effect to a number of objectives set out in the Government’s Strategy for the Rental Sector published in December 2016 and the review of Rebuilding Ireland conducted in late 2017. The Act’s key provisions include:

• increasing the amount of notice which a landlord is required to give when terminating a tenancy;

• increasing the instances where landlords are required to offer properties back to tenants if they become available for rent within certain periods of time;

• making it mandatory for landlords to register tenancies on an annual basis;

• extending the application of certain provisions of the Residential Tenancies Acts to purpose-built student accommodation. This type of accommodation has typically provided by way of licence rather than tenancy and has therefore fallen outside the scope of the legislation and the remit of the RTB;

• giving powers to the RTB to carry out investigations against landlords, even without the need for a complaint from the public, and to impose administrative sanctions;

• the creation of criminal offences for landlords in relation to non-compliance with rent increase restrictions in rent pressure zones and tenancy registration requirements, and non-cooperation with investigations; and

• providing for the mandatory publication of determination orders by the RTB.

While the publication of determination orders is to be welcomed in the sense that it may help to provide clarity and precedent in terms of the RTB’s position on certain matters, it may chill the hearts of many landlords to think that if they step out of line their names could soon be up in lights for all the world to see.

A sobering thought, particularly for those who never wanted to be landlords in the first place.

With property values in certain parts of the country approaching their pre-crash levels, and those who were in negative equity beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel, how long more before one-off landlords decide that enough is enough and decide to cut their losses and sell up? Who knows, maybe that’s what the Government wants.

Sponsored: Tralee Clinic To Co-Host Fertility Information Event In Dublin

.
Dr Mary McCaffrey.

THE Scotia Clinic, Tralee and the Embryo Clinic, Greece will co-host an open free event on Sunday the 30th of June, in the Aishling Hotel Dublin, named “Fertility Treatment Abroad – the Ireland / Greek Solution”.

The keynote speakers on the day will be Dr. Mary Mc Caffrey, FRCOG, the Scotia Clinic Tralee, Co. Kerry and Dr. Elias Tsakos, FRCOG, the Embryo Clinic, Greece.

The Scotia Clinic was the first Irish Clinic to devise a Satellite / Shared Care model of fertility treatment approximately 10 years ago. Thus, minimizes time of work and unnecessary travel for couples.

In recent years many Irish couples are seeking fertility treatment overseas and this event will enable them to learn more about this journey and how by working with both a leading Irish clinic and Greek clinic most of their care can still be central to home. Plus, for many of patients going abroad can reduce cost by up to 50%.

On the day Dr. Mc Caffrey and Dr. Tsakos will focus on how this will work for couples, in terms of receiving initial testing and consultations with the Scotia Clinic and how this can then prompt their treatment plan with Embryo Clinic. The Embryo Clinic provides IVF treatment, fertility preservation, egg donation and sperm donation.

Greece is also the only EU country where surrogacy is legal for heterosexual couples.

As a leading voice in reproductive medicine Dr. Mary Mc Caffrey has established a network of international clinics who work directly with in the Scotia Clinic. This unique service within the Scotia Clinic has enabled many couples to benefit from the affiliations of clinics internationally in their reproductive journey.

The Scotia Clinic are acutely aware that for any couple seeking assistance in this area the cost of travelling either abroad or elsewhere in Ireland can be prohibitive and can create added stresses. That is why they endeavor to provide much of your care in Ireland before you leave. Also, throughout your reproductive journey you can attend the Scotia Clinic for all your tests and treatments, including scans, blood tests, drug treatments and so on.

The event will be held in the Aishling Hotel, Dublin on Sunday the 30th of June. Registration is from 9am, with the programme commencing at 9:30am and running until 12:30pm. On the day all those attending are welcome to meet with Dr. Mary Mc Caffrey & Dr. Elias Tsakos as there is an opportunity for consultations from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

To attend please register your interest at reception@scotiaclinic.ie. To learn more about this event visit the www.scotiaclinic.ie or the www.embryoclinic.eu

Over Three Years For Kerry First-Time Buyers To Get Deposit Together For House

.

A NEW report issued today by EY-DKM Economic Advisory, has revealed it takes 3.1 years for a first-time buyer in Kerry, on an average income, to save the necessary deposit  to get a mortgage for a home in their native county.

The report confirms that nearly half of all counties (46%) in the Republic of Ireland are now unaffordable for first-time buyers on an average income, with Kerry ranking number 11 on the list for affordability.

The report titled “Just how affordable is housing for Ireland’s first time buyers?” provides an analysis of Ireland’s housing market using a unique modelling tool and highlights the worrying trend that the lack of affordable houses for first time buyers has moved beyond urban centres such as Dublin and Cork, and has now become an issue in many less urban areas nationwide.

Continued below…

.

The report assesses affordability using two factors; whether first-time buyers can afford the mortgage repayments on a property based on a mortgage of 3.5 times their household income, and second, their ability to accumulate a sufficient deposit of 10% to purchase the property.

The findings reveal that a significant barrier to home ownership for first-time buyers’ is their ability to save the required 10% deposit due to a range of factors, which, in some counties, can take over 15 years to accumulate on an average income.

In Kerry, the report finds that it takes first-time buyers on an average income 3.1 years to save for a deposit.

The Dublin commuter counties of Wicklow, Meath and Kildare top the results as the most unaffordable when it comes to saving for a deposit, with an average of 15+ years required to save 10%.

Roscommon follows closely behind at 10.4 years while, in contrast, first-time buyers in Dublin are required to save for 4.3 years.

Leitrim is the most affordable county, with a little over one year required to achieve a 10% deposit. These figures may appear counter-intuitive, but they reflect differences in property prices and household incomes across the country.

Between 2015 and 2018 property prices in Kerry grew by 8.4%. The strongest price growth in the period was seen in Laois at 14.1% while Sligo experienced the weakest growth at 3.9%.

Ignoring the need for a deposit, the report assessed affordability when looking at the ability to meet mortgage repayments, based on a mortgage of 3.5 times household income.

In this instance, houses across the country are deemed significantly more affordable, with just seven counties classed as unaffordable using this metric. Dublin, Cork, Galway, Meath, Wicklow, Kildare and Louth remain out of reach to the majority of first-time buyers even if the 10% deposit was achieved.

However, houses in all other areas of Ireland are deemed relatively affordable on this measure. First-time buyers in Kerry were found to have a mortgage to income ratio of 3:1.

Other findings from the report show:

• The top five affordable counties in Ireland for first-time buyers saving for a deposit are; Leitrim (1.3 years), Waterford (1.6 years), Sligo (1.6 years), Cavan (1.7 years) and Longford (1.9 years).

• The five least affordable counties in Ireland for first-time buyers saving for a deposit are: Meath (15+ years), Wicklow (15+ years), Kildare (15+ years), Roscommon (10.4 years) and Galway (8.3 years).

• The number of houses in rented accommodation in Dublin in 1991 was 8%, in 2016 that figure rose to 20%.

There is no evidence to suggest that first-time buyers are moving to areas where houses are seen as more affordable, as the more affordable counties do not appear to be growing faster, on average, than the less affordable counties, in terms of the growth in the number of property transactions.

EY’s latest forecast projects GDP growth of 4.1% in 2019, with moderated growth to 2023 and beyond. This forecast will increase employment levels with a projected further 210,000 jobs coming on stream in the next five years.

Foreign workers will be drawn in to meet this need, but this in turn will put further strain on the property market.

New Survey Reveals What Kerry People Cook On The Barbecue

.
Kerry people are creatures of habit when it comes to what they cook at a barbecue.

FANCY a barbecue this week? While today might be dull, the rest of the week is looking very good indeed so the aroma of burgers, sausages and steaks will be wafting through the estates of Tralee over the next few days.

A new survey reveals Kerry people are creatures of habit when it comes to what’s on the menu at BBQ time. Research, conducted by SuperValu, has dived into the BBQ habits of the Kerry public and reveals some interesting food findings.

According to research 42% of Kerry folk stated they cook the same food every time they BBQ, with burgers (93%), sausages (90%), chicken (80%) and ribs (32%) the first meats they throw on the barbie.  Only 19% of Kerry natives plan on cooking steak on the BBQ this summer.

.

Nationally, those aged between 45 and 54 years are the most adventurous grill masters, disagreeing that they always grill the same foods when they BBQ.

SuperValu’s survey results determined quality of the meat as the most important consideration (60%) for Kerry consumers deciding on what meat to purchase, followed by value (21%) and range of meat available (12%).

When visiting their local SuperValu butcher, the people of Kerry continue to opt for Striploin Steak as their beef cut of choice, followed closely behind by Sirloin Steak.

Coiste na nÓg News:
U16 Boys:

Our U16s entertained Na Gaeil in the first round of the County League Division 2 in Ballymac on Monday .
Despite Ballymac getting the first score , Na Gaeil were quick to get into their stride and were 1 03 to 0 01  ahead after 15 mins of play .  A heavy shower of rain midway through the first half made playing conditions difficult.  But  fair play to Ballymac for sticking to the task , a penalty from Adam Joy and 2 points , one from Daragh Sweeney & one from Donal Daly left the score at the interval 2 06 to 1 03 in favour of Na Gaeil .
In the second half Na Gaeil took the game to Ballymac and pressed on with some excellent point scoring to put themselves in a commanding position heading into the last quarter .

Another penalty from Adam Joy hit the back off the net and Sean Horan was unfortunate to hit the post and our luck seem to desert us on the night . Na Gaeil went on to win on the night on the score line of Na Gaeil 2 15 Ballymac 3 05 . Thanks to all parents who supported us on the night and thanks to Na Gaeil for a fine sporting Game on the night .
Players to impress were Adam Kelly Adam Sheehy Maurice o Connell & Daragh Sweeney .

Next game is at home on Wednesday next the 26th June V Ardfert at 7pm

U14Boys:
Our u14 Boys began their Division One Central Region campaign with a trip to Killorglin to play Laune Rangers on Monday June 17th last.

This was our first outing since our Co League success and in the early stages of the game we showed a bit of rustiness due to the gap between games which saw the home side hit 2-5 without reply .However our boys showed great character to fight back and by half time had reduced the deficit with a score line of 2-11 to 2-5.

An early goal and some well taken points brought us to within a point of the opposition unfortunately for us this was as close as we got as Laune Rangers scored a couple of goals to seal victory for them on a 5-17 to 5-7 score line.

Despite the loss it was a good performance from our lads against  a team who took part in Division One of the Co League.

We now have Austin Stacks ,Churchill and Ardfert to play in this competition.

Ballymac were well represented on the u14 Castleisland District panel who played West Kerry in the Divisional Board Shield Final held in Austin Stack Park on Thursday evening last.

Aidan Horgan. Diarmuid Galvin. Sean Rice,Niall Collins, Luke Horgan, Skye Lynch and Conor Martin all saw action on the night, with John Rice part of the management team.

Unfortunately the boys from the West proved too strong on the night and took home the spoils.

It’s nice to see a plethora of Munster medals coming to the club.

Na Gaeil Ladies    After a bit of a break, we got our League campaign back underway again as we played away to Castleisland Desmonds on Sunday evening in the Ladies Division 1 County League. Maria Quirke got us off to a quick start with a point in the first minute, quickly followed by points from Meagan and Sarah Cunningham.

With fine play from Nora and Niamh, Mary was played in for the first goal of the game with two more goals quickly scored by Sarah C and Jadyn. Desmonds got their 1st point of the game after 12 minutes but with Emma, Muireann, Sarah Quigley, Brid,Eilis and Kate Anne  prominent in the backs and Sarah Barrett in goals, Desmonds didnt score again till they got a point at the end of the 1st half. But we kicked on and with more points from Sarah C, Maria, Meagan, Eilis, Erika, Jadyn and Blaithnaid and another goal from Clodagh, we had a resounding lead at half time.

Balithnaid won us a penalty at the start of the 2ndhalf which Maria put away. We followed this up with points from Jadyn, Sarah and Niamh. Caoimhe, Freya, Martina and debutant Hilary came in with fresh legs along with Muire coming into the forward line.

Castleisland got themselves a few scores with the aid of the wind in the 2nd half. But with time running out, Brid broke an attack and drove up the field and found Eilis on the run. Eilis made her run and scored a super goal from an acute angle.

The game finished on a scoreline of 6-17 to 1-04. Well done on a good attacking and defensive display. Next game away to Rathmore

Team: Sarah Quigley, Mary O’Connell, Brid O’Connor, Nora O’Connell, Jadyn Lucey, Eilis O’Connor, Meagan Sheehy,  Kate Anne O’Connor, Maria Quirke, Sarah Cunningham, ,Clodagh McHugh, Erika O’Sullivan, Marguerite Maunsell,   Muireann Moriarty, Emma O’Keeffe, Martina O’Connor, Freya O’Connor, Sarah Barrett,  Muire Kingston, Blaithnaid O’Connor, Niamh Plunkett, Hilary Costello.

Na Gaeil v Beaufort, Div 3 Ladies County League

We played our final game in the Division 3 County League on Sunday against Beaufort. We had a dry evening and used the conditions to our advantage. Beaufort are a strong team but with Cara and Caoilinn controlling midfield and with Aisling, Roisin and Ciara working hard in the half back line, we were giving ourselves a good chance to compete with Beaufort.

It was a tight game but the fire power that we have with Siun, Siena, Eve, Grainne and Sorcha, we were able to get some good scores. As the game was getting tighter and closer, we were able to hold Beaufort back with Aoife in goals and whose handling has been superb all year.

And with Grainne and Elsie Peig in front of her, we had the defence to hold out Beaufort to come away with a great win again on a scoreline of 7-03 to 4-08. Well done on another great team performance where everyone worked hard and played for each other.

Team:  Aoife Barrett, Elsie Peig Rogers, Aisling Casey, Siun Fitzgibbon, Cara Gannon, Siena Lucey, Caoilinn O’Brien, Roisin O’Mahony, Eve Broderick, Grainne Breen, Sorcha Casey,  Roisin O’Mahony, Ciara Lynch, Grainne Quirke.

Austin Stacks GAA Club News

SENIOR FOOTBALL: It’s amazing that, after six rounds of the Co. League, seven teams share top spot on eight points each with all seven having won four games and lost two. So with five rounds remaining it’s still wide open as to who will come out on top.

Round 7 goes ahead on this week-end as we travel to Templenoe on Saturday evening (29th June) for a 7.30pm throw-in.

B FOOTBALL: Our B team are also on duty this week-end as they welcome Moyvane to Connolly Park on Sunday afternoon for a 2pm start.  Moyvane are third on the League table while we occupy 7th spot.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-14 (17); Ballydonoghue (3-7 (16).
Despite conceding three first half goals the C Team put up a brilliant performance to eventually edge out a very strong North Kerry outfit by the narrowest of margins in this postponed round 2 Co. League game played in ideal conditions in Connolly Park on a fine Tuesday evening (18th June).

We got off to the perfect start with Seán Dukes winning the throw-in, finding Darragh Long who opened the scoring after just twelve seconds. The visitors then equalized but Darragh was on target again in the 4th minute following good work by Danny Roche.

William Kirby put over our third and David Courtney our 4th after nine minutes to put us three up at that stage. But Bally were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute which they brilliantly converted to level matters.

Four minutes later they added a second, this time from play after we had put over two in the meantime with Darragh and David Courtney on target again. Seamus Smith then pointed in the 17th minute to level again.

Our only goal of game came a minute later when David Courtney was on target but this was cancelled out immediately when Bally got through for their third.

In the closing ten minutes of the half we just shaded it scoring three points to two for the opposition – Danny Roche, Darragh Long (free) and William Kirby on target for us. This left us ahead by one at half time (1-10 to 3-3) and that was still the margin at the end of this tightest of tight games after both sides had scored four points each during that second half – Darragh Long again scoring three of these – to  cap a fine performance by him – with David Courtney scoring the forth of the half.

Team: Darragh O’Brien, Tommy Costello, David Leonard, Brian Phelan, Conor Lowe, Barry Walsh (Capt), Michael Godley, Seán Dukes, Daniel Bohan, Danny Roche (0-1), Darragh Long (0-7 – four frees), Seamus Smith (0-1), David Courtney (1-3), William Kirby (0-2), Pádraig Breen.
Subs used: Michael Collins (ht), Joe Looby (36m), Philip Quilter (40m), Eoin Muckian (51m), Gearóid Sheehan (54m), Rory O’Shea (58m).
Connolly Park will also be the venue for our Round 3 game against Na Gaeil which is scheduled to go ahead on this Friday evening (21st June) at 7.30pm.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 4-11; Na Gaeil 1-6.
In the space of three days our C team have achieved a second win in this 3rd round of the Co. League played at a damp Connolly Park on last Friday evening (21st June).

After a measured start we went into a three points lead inside the first ten minutes with Danny Roche, Michael Linnane and Seán Dukes on target for us.

However by the 15th minute we found ourselves in arrears  after Na Gaeil pointed twice and then capitalized on a defensive error for a well-taken goal. Both sides then exchanged points by the 20th minute, ours coming from Danny Roche again.

Then two minutes later David Courtney was at the end of a good Stacks move to put away the first of our four goals. Na Gaeil pointed in the 25th minute to leave the sides level on 1-4 each.

Then in the closing two minutes of the half we scored a goal and two points which was the difference between the sides at half time (2-6 to 1-4).

The goal came after some brilliant work by those two veterans, William Kirby and Daniel Bohan to set Danny Roche free and he placed his shot perfectly away from the keeper. David Courtney then pointed and the last score of the half came from a pointed Daniel Bohan free after another veteran, Mikey Collins was fouled going through.

We had a very good second half also scoring just one point short of what we had achieved in the first half. The two goals came this from Mikey Collins (in the 40th minute) and Cian Liston in the 55th minute while our five points came from Danny and David again with the other three from three of the subs introduced during the game – Mike Collins, Cian Liston and David Walsh.

So another all-round brilliant performance by our lads, including a superb defensive display holding the opposition to just two scores during that second half. It was good to see a number of players back on the field of play after some long absences and good also to see Sean Somers making his Senior Club debut, coming on during the second half and performing well.

It’s tight at the top of the League table with three teams sharing top spot on four points each – that’s Mitchels, ourselves and Annascaul (Mitchels do have a game in hand).
Team (13 a-side): Darragh O’Brien, Tommy Costello, No Full Back, Barry Walsh, Conor Lowe, TJ Hogan, Michael Linnane (0-1), Jason Mitchel (Capt), Gearóid Sheehan, Ricky Moloney, Seán Dukes (0-1),  Danny Roche (1-3), David Courtney (1-2), No Full Forward, Daniel Bohan (0-1 free).

Subs used: Michael Collins (15m) (1-1), William Kirby (20m), Philip Quilter (27m), Cian Liston (41m) (1-1), St. John Hegarty (45m), David Walsh (50m) (0-1), Martin Courtney (52m), Seán Somers (52).
We now have two more rounds to play, away to Listowel Emmets in a fortnight’s time (5th July) and two weeks after that (19th July) at home to John Mitchels.

WELL DONE: to both the Kerry Minors (including our own Luke Chester and Adam Curran) and the Kerry Seniors on their Munster Final victories against Cork last Saturday.

BEST OF LUCK; from all in the Senior Section of the Club to our U14 boys as they travel to a number of venues in Connacht on this coming week-end for the All Ireland Finals of Féile na bPeil.

LOTTO: Last week’s (17th June) Jackpot, worth €11,400, was not won. The numbers drawn were 3, 6,  20, 24.
The €20 winners were: Martin O’Regan, c/o Carmel O’Neill; Tim Tiger Slattery, c/o The Club; Jerry & Mary Fitzmaurice, c/o Club Rockies; Eoin Muckian, c/o Terry’s; Pat De Lacey, c/o Rock Street Post Office.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Credit Union Co League

The Co League resumes next weekend and Round 7 sees both of our senior sides in action.  The Senior A panel are joint top of the table, but share that distinction with six other clubs, all of which have eight points from the first six games.

O’Rahillys now move on to a shootout with fellow table toppers An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus on Saturday evening next, June 29th, with a 7.30pm throw-in.

The West Kerry side has led the league table from the start, reeling off four consecutive victories, but have come unstuck in their last two games and will be anxious to get back to winning ways.

Despite the absence of several key players of late, Strand Road have shown plenty of resilience and a strong second half performance last time out versus Templenoe should bolster the confidence of this young side.

Gary Kissane will probably start in goals, with Sean Collins and Darragh McElligott assisting Ross O’Callaghan in a defence which should see Ryan Carroll return alongside Cormac Coffey and Shane Brosnan.

Con Barrett and Tom Hoare were impressive at midfield against Templenoe, while Barry John Keane will be expected to spearhead the attack with assistance from Paidi Griffin and promising youngster, Conor Hayes.  Keep an eye on our social channels – Facebook, Twitter and kerinsorahillys.com for updates.

Our Senior B team had an impressive win over Dr Crokes in the last round of matches and currently sit joint fifth in the table with their next opponents, Ballyduff.

It won’t be easy though as we must travel to the North Kerry venue, with the game scheduled to throw-in at 2pm on Sunday next.

Our hosts, the current county Junior champions, will surely see home advantage as an opportunity to climb the table.  As always, the availability of players will be crucial to O’Rahillys.  Rob O’Connor was superb in goals versus Crokes.

The defence will look to Jason O’Leary and Tom McGrath for leadership, with Kieran Mangan, Barry Foley and Cillian Gallagher providing valuable support.

Rory Molloy should drive the team from midfield and Donagh O’Brien will be looking to continue his good form in an attack which should be led by Johnny Keane with support from Brian Scannell, Gearóid Hartnett, Kevin Johnson-Horgan and young Darragh Fitzgerald.  Again, check our social channels for updates.  All support welcome for both of our panels.

CÚINNE NA NÓG

STREET LEAGUES

The summer holidays are nearly upon us and after a week or so we will all be hearing “I’m bored, I have nothing to do”.  Plenty of long evenings for playing football lads!  If you already play or even if you don’t play we will be organising “Street Leagues “ over the next few weeks. Tell your friends that these are coming up. We will have a final with medal presentation at the end of it. Something to look forward to for everyone in our community!

U12 BOYS

Our under 12s signed off the county league in style with a 5-13 to 3-7 victory over Foilmore on Sunday afternoonin Ballyrickard. Foilmore started stronger and took a 2-2 to 1 point lead in the first 10 minutes.

We started to settle with Oisín Cronin taking command of midfield with our opening point and goal. Brayden Pierce and Oisín started to drive forward from midfield and created an opening for Nick Lacey to sweep a lovely crossfield ball to Odhran Foley who finished from a tight angle.

Cillian McGrath came in to shore up our defence but with a few minutes to go we lost Brayden Pierce to a nasty collision. Foilmore recovered and added a few points to retake the lead but Nick Lacey rattled off 4 points at the end of the half to leave 1 between the sides at half time.

We came out fighting in the second half with Nick leading the charge, scoring another 3 points.

Ryan Onyekwere, again working so hard, got his reward with a goal before Odhran Foley scored his 2nd and 3rd goals in quick succession.

In control now, Ryan and Oisín added scores and Nick raised the white flag twice to take his tally to 9 points with 8 from play. Credit to Brayden Pierce who returned in the second half to limit the threat of an excellent Foilmore midfielder.

As Foilmore rallied, Evan Daly was superb in goals, handling everything well and restarting with confidence. Although Foilmore would eventually get a goal, Daniel Aneke and Conor Cronin would limit them to 1-2 in the entire second half.

This was a great team performance especially considering the absence of Rory and Jamie.  We had leaders all over the pitch. Some great performances were topped by Nick Lacey with a 9-point haul winning the man of the match.

U16 BOYS

We played Annauscaul / Lispole in the first round of the County League on Wednesday evening. After two previous defeats to the same opponents in the Central League we got the upper hand on this occasion.

With both teams missing some players the game was played 13 aside.  We got off to a flying start, hitting the net on three occasions in quick succession from the boots of Darragh O Connor, Seán Healy and Sam McCarthy to leave the score 3-1 to 1 point after 15 minutes.

A positive point of this half was the return of Seán Healy to his old self with some powerful runs.  Further goals from Ben Hanafin and a second of the half for Darragh O Connor saw the half time score 5-02 to 6 points.

The second half saw Darragh O Connor complete a ‘man of the match’ display with a third goal bringing his tally to 3-5 on a night where all our backs impressed while being well assisted by Ben O’ Brien and Thomas Maguire giving a solid display in goals.

Up front, Darragh O Connor was the chief contributor with Seán Healy and Sam McCarthy also proving a handful for their opponents and with Danny Hennessy popping up from midfield to contribute 3 points to the cause.

Next week we play Keel /  Listry away.  Time and date to be confirmed .

Team and scorers: Thomas Maguire, Sam Pituch, Eric Mc Mahon, Ben Hanafin (1-0), Jerome Daly, Enis Reka, Danny Hennessy (0-3), Gearóid Meehan, Seán Healy (1-1), Ben O’Brien, Darragh O Connor (3-5), Sam McCarthy (1-2. Subs – Cormac Gallagher, Kevin Molloy, Joe O Sullivan, Alan O Connor, Rory O Halloran, Seán Collins.

FAMILY FUN DAY

We have pencilled in Sunday, July 7th for our annual Family Fun Day.  Keep this day free as we will have plenty of kids activities, fun and entertainment for adults too. This event is open to everyone in our community. Keep an eye on our notes for more information next week.

LADIES NOTES

STREET LEAGUES

Over the next few weeks we will be organising ‘Street Leagues ‘ for the girls in our community. So no excuses about being bored during your long summer holidays….. Everyone welcome! Plenty of fun girls and we will have a final and medal presentation at the end.

U12 GIRLS

Co. League Final

Our girls gave an outstanding performance in Currans on Tuesday last to win their Co. League final. Cheered on by a huge and vocal support, the girls played their hearts out on the wide-open pitch. Though we had named our 15 starters, Dingle could only muster 13 players and therefore we had to go 13–A- SIDE.

The setting sun provided a picturesque background as the girls played with the sun to their backs in the first half.

It was nip and tuck for the first 10 minutes with a point from Ciara Gallagher followed by a further point from a free by Fiadh McCarthy. The outstanding Kelly Fitzgerald banged in 2 excellent goals giving us a half time lead of 2-02 to O-04.

In the second half Dingle threw everything at us but goalkeeper Millie and all six backs Mia, Farah, Donna, Saoirse, Sophie and Taylor stood up to the challenge. Fiadh added two more points and Aoibheann McCarthy cracked in a great goal.

Sara at midfield plus our other forwards Córa, Aoife, Megan, Taylor Kate and Caragh caused Dingle lots of trouble. When Leila, Aoibhne and Kelly Hayes were introduced, they helped secure a famous victory.

Final score- Kerins O’Rahillys 3-06 to Dingle 1-06.

Kelly Fitz accepted the trophy and gave a super speech. Many thanks to Michelle, Pádraig and Rory. There were great celebrations on the road back to Strand Road.

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays in preparation for the North Kerry plate final v Duagh. More details to follow.

Well done to Kelly Fitzgerald who played at half time of The Munster Final in the Kerry Primary School Games team. As always some outstanding kick outs from Kelly.

U14 GIRLS

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays in preparation for The Sandra Keane Tournament on July 20th and the U13 and U15 Championship.

U16 GIRLS

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays in preparation for U15 and U17 Championship.

SENIOR LADIES

Our numbers are still increasing thanks to the girls bringing friends along to join in. A big thank you to Erris for her commitment and patience in rounding up our ladies.

The ladies should have played Beale/ Ballyduff in the Co. League but unfortunately they cancelled the game on Sunday evening.  Our disappointed ladies were so looking forward to a game. We are away to Annascaul next Sunday – more details to follow.

CAKE SALE

On Sunday, July 7th we will have a cake sale in Strand Road. This is one of our fundraisers for the year. So far we have been able to get 2 new sets of jerseys but could do with more. We also will be bag packing later in the summer to raise funds for our day out. All help greatly appreciated please.

Congrats to our girls and boys who competed in the Community Games and many thanks to the ladies in Blennerville / Ballyard Community Games for all their hard work as always in organising everything.

Congrats also to our girls and boys who have graduated or are graduating from 6th class.

Juvenile Academy

U6: Our U6 boys and girls continued their progression last Sunday morning when they trained despite the wet weather conditions and it was great to see their cheerful faces. As usual, training resumes next Sunday at 10.30am in the astro pitch.

U8: Well done to all the Under 8’s who trained in the rain last Sunday morning; our first time since we moved outdoors this season believe it or not that we trained in the rain!  We started with a warm up with Coach John McMillan and then straight into drills where we focused on the pick up, high fielding, hop and soloing and kick passing.

We finished then with two 4 a side games which were very competitive. All the players are making huge progress and are really enjoying their football which is what it’s all about at the end of the day.

The player of the week trophy stays in the same house as last week as Rylan’s twin brother Jace picked up the gong. Another young man who is clearly practicing a lot at home! We would also like to say a big thank you to Bens mum Laura for providing the refreshments after training for all the academy players.

The under 8’s have a busy schedule this week. The last round of the St Brendans Board Under 8 Go Games takes place in Ballyheigue this Wednesday evening. All players to be in Ballyheigue GAA pitch for 6:50pm with a 7pm start time. Then, the following night in Caherslee, there is a preliminary session for our Under 8’s with this year’s Cúl camp coaches. It’s a great opportunity for our players to come along and try out the “Cúl Camp” experience. The St Pats Cúl Camp takes place from Monday August 5th to Friday August 9th at our pitch. You can register online at www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie

Training will continue next Sunday morning at the usual time of 10:30am.

U10: We had a good session on last Sunday morning with plenty of emphasis on accurate kicking and movement. Well done to Patryk on being awarded the Player of the Week trophy, he put in a great session with some good tackling and strong kicking on display. The weather conditions towards the end of the session turned a little damp however for players like Tara, Rhíana, Tommy, Eddie, Rian and James this was hardly noticed so engaged were they in the game, although afterwards there was a comment or two about playing in the rain! Academy continues at the usual time of 10:30am on Sundaynext.

U12: St Pats U-12’s had a busy week of Co League action. Last Tuesday & Sunday we were at home to Skellig Rangers & Ballyheigue respectively.  Results were mixed with a loss v Skellig and win v Ballyheigue. Every one of our St Pats future stars Gary Scollard, Mark O Brien, Aiden Hayes, Liam O’Connor, Michael Enright, Enda Sheehan, Daniel Sheehy, Jack Costello, Darragh Murphy, Killian O’Mahony, Rory Daly, Luke Passway, Kevin Gaxha, Ben O Leary, Conor Sheehan  and Rodhan Culloo put in a great effort for both games. It’s important ye all continue to attend our training sessions and also keep practicing yer skills at home during the week. The training schedule for the week will be circulated to ye shortly. Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

U14 Boys: Our U14 boys opened their Central Region campaign last Thursday evening in a rescheduled match against Milltown/Castlemaine B in Blennerville and acquitted themselves very well. We had a blistering start to the game with some well taken points and goals despite missing a good number of players including our first and second choice goal keepers and having no subs to bring on.

We were ahead at the end of the short whistle and made some changes, especially in goals for the second half. A combination of our tiredness and some “cute” subs introduced by the opposition made the difference and ensured that the game had a nail-biting finish as the match ended on a score line of St Pats 6-10 Milltown/Castlemaine 5-13. Well done to both teams for an exciting game of football.

Our next match is this Monday, 24th June when we entertain Laune Rangers B to Blennerville in a second round fixture of the same competition. Best of luck to all involved.

Juniors

Our senior B team were scheduled to play Castlegregory last Friday in Round 3, Group 3 of the Junior Football League but the match was conceded by the opposition.

Our next match is a round 4 fixture when we travel west to play An Ghaeltacht next month, the 5th of July at 7.30pm in Gallarus.

Seniors

County League action resumes after the Munster football finals last weekend with St Pats making the short trip to Milltown to take on Milltown/Castlemaine in Round 7 of the Credit Union Senior Football League this Saturday, the 29th June at 7.30pm.

We urge our supporters to come out and support the lads as we attempt to kick start or campaign in this competition.

Congratulations

To the Kerry Minor team managed by our own James Costello and his kit man, another St Pats stalwart, Johnny Enright and also to the Kerry Seniors, both winning Munster football Minor and Senior titles respectively at the weekend at the expense of Cork and ensuring a seven-in-a-row record.

Blennerville/Ballard Community Games

Thanks and well done to all the atheletes who represented Blennerville/Ballard over 2 days for the County finals in athletics last weekend, some for the first time. We had participants in every race and they all ran their hearts out.

On Sunday, Blennerville/Ballyard managed to finish off the day with 5 individual medals and 2 relays medals despite the very bad weather conditions. Congratulations to the following athletes who medaled today.

Lucy Mulgrew U12 long jump 3rd (bronze medal)
Rachel O’Mahoney U14 long jump, 2nd (silver medal) and 4th u14 hurdles (pewter medal)
Jada Clarke U16 high jump, 3rd (bronze medal)

Cian Caplis, Aidan Hayes, Lucy Mulgrew and Rachel O’Mahoney.

Jada Clarke, Rachael O’Donnell, Grace O’Mahoney and Keelin Enright..

Congratulations to Darragh Murphy who ran a great race in the 600m U12 and finished at the top of the pack but just outside the medals. Keelin Enright also made it all the way to the U16 100m final, after finishing 2nd in her heat but unfortunately didn’t come away with a medal for her hard work.

A special mention and Well done also to Sophie Mulgrew, Grace Costello, and Aidan Hayes who all ran so well in their semi-finals and just missed out narrowly on getting to the final.

Good luck to Tralee Parnells minors facing Ballyduff away on Sunday the 30th.

Whn Féile na nGael Hurling and Camogie came to Tralee on the Saturday, Caherslee was awash with  our club colours and bunting.  Then on Féile na nGael Saturday evening, it was time to socialise and celebrate.  A chance to unwind for the players coaches and parents. They they marched from Caherslee GAA grounds to Kerins O Rahillys clubhouse where there was music, great laughs and presentations. It was great to mix with our guests from Castleblayney Co Monaghan and Eir Og Carrickmore from County Tyrone.

Under 6:
Under 6 player of the week Sonny McDermott.
Possibly his third year playing with Parnells, A club legend allready. Good photo on or Facebook page.

Results for last week:
Our Div 1 and 3, U12 teams were both beaten by two quality Ballyduff teams in phase 2 of the County League. The Siv 1 team were unlucky to lose to a late goal and our Div 3 team had no answer to a serious team of 11 year olds from Ballyduff.
Our Under 14s were defeated by St Brendans in the North Kerry league. After a close opening half that finished level St Brendans were much the better team in the second half and ended up winning 1-15 to 2-04. We had eighteen players togged and it wasnt ideal that the game was played 12 a side on a full pitch.
Our Intermediates defeated St Pats in the South Kerry league . A thirteen a side game so the stress levels were high for Brian Shan and Mark Ryall getting the 25 fellas we had togged on and off the pitch.  Speaking of stress, best of luck to Intermediate goalkeeper and Joint manager Mark Ryall who is getting married. Fair play to the Eilish O’Leary for putting up with him.
If Shan cries during the cermony he has agreed   to stand down as intermediate manager.

Intermediate Men:
Report from St. Pat’s social media…
A great second half performance wasnt enough this evening in Caherslee against Tralee Parnells. Parnells strong 1st half proving too much. Final score. Tralee Parnells 6-13 St Pats 4-05.
St Pats Players:
Beany Coffey, Donagh O’Regan, Tomas Holohan, John Kelly, Donal Casey, James Burke, Brendan Holohan, Fionn Holohan, Dan Sheehy, Thomas Boyle, Pat Clifford, Wayne Doyle, Paul Horan, Ger Lenihan, Monk Coffey.

Temperatures Are Set To Rise This Week, But First…

.
Lots of this to come this week.

TEMPERATURES are set to rise significantly in Ireland this week, but Met Eireann has issued an Status Yellow Weather Advisory for Ireland this afternoon.

They say there is the risk of heavy thundery downpours, especially over Munster and Leinster which may lead to spot flooding. The warning is valid until 10pm tonight, but it looks like we’ll escape the worst of the rain here in Kerry.

However, things will get much better during the week. Tuesday will start out quite cloudy with some mist and fog patches but it will brighten up with good sunny spells developing. A risk of a few heavy showers developing in the afternoon and evening. Highs of 19 to 23 degrees in light to moderate northeast breezes.

Continued below…

.

Wednesday will be a warm day with good sunshine and just the odd shower. Highest temperatures of 19 to 24 degrees. Dry on Wednesday night with lowest temperatures of 9 to 14 degrees.

Thursday will be another warm and sunny day for most of the country with highs of 20 to 27 degrees. It will stay dry generally, but some rain may clip the southwest coast. A humid night will follow with temperatures not lower than 14 to 17 degrees.

Friday sees little change, a warm day with highs of 20 to 26 degrees. Just the odd shower again. It will feel close on Friday night with lowest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees.

However, the weekend sees a transition to much fresher weather on Saturday and this may come with a spell of heavy and thundery rain. Sunday will be a cooler day nationwide.

Queen Maeve Looks Forward To Puck

.
Twelve-year old Maeve McCarthy, the new Queen of Puck Fair.

IT may be only June, but a hugely popular Kerry festival has already selected their Queen.

With the annual Puck Fair Festival taking place from August 10-12, preparations are already well underway in Killorglin and an integral part of that is the selection of her royal highness, Queen Puck.

The selection process sees an independent judging panel trawl through all the entry letters from 6th class pupils across the region before interviewing each hopeful and hearing them read aloud the famous Puck Fair welcome speech, which is recited during the Coronation Ceremony on the festival’s opening day.

Continued below…

.

Well after a tough selection process, 12-year-old Maeve McCarthy from Cromane Lower in Killorglin, has just been crowned as Queen of Puck Fair.

Maeve, a student of Scoil Réalt na Mara in Cromane, will now take her rightful place among a long list of former Puck Queens, each of whom has played a central role in Puck Fair over the decades.

Much like her predecessors, Maeve’s duties will include meeting and greeting visitors to the festival, addressing the crowd in the town’s main square on day one of the fair and of course, the all-important crowning of King Puck during the Coronation Ceremony.

Commenting on her new royal status and her excitement for the festival, Maeve said: “I really can’t believe the committee chose me out of all the entries they received. I’m so happy that they liked my letter and I can’t believe that I’ll get the chance to be Puck Queen, which is something I’ve wanted to be since I was tiny! Puck Fair is a huge part of our lives and it’s really special that I get to play such an important role this year. I can’t wait for the music and the parades and to meet so many people from all over the world during Puck Fair. It’s like Christmas in summer; I don’t think I’ll sleep with the excitement over the next two months!”

The legendary 3-day event, is Ireland’s oldest gathering festival and revolves around the crowning of a wild mountain goat as King Puck and overseer of the town.

The festival’s ancient traditions date back to 1613, but over four centuries later the popularity of this unique event shows no sign of waning, with visitors from all over the globe flocking to Killorglin every August to witness the royal festivities with their own eyes.

PHOTOS: Athletics Finals Bring Out The Best In Community Spirit

.

A FANTASTIC weekend of athletics and the very essence of community spirit was on display at An Ríocht athletics grounds in Castleisland.

The Kerry Community Games athletics finals was the occasion and while it was a ‘game of two halves’ in terms of the weather, the common thread was great sportsmanship and youngsters giving it their all on the track and field.

The games opened in blazing sunshine on Saturday morning with a colourful parade of the 41 areas with their banners.

Continued below…

.

The flag bearers were Niamh Murphy and Caoilainn Culloo of Blennerville/Ballyard, while  the county banner was carried by Cora O’Mahony of Ballybunion and Denis O’Mahony Milltown.

The pledge readers were Erin Murphy from Killorglin (as gaeilge) and Mairead Walsh of Firies read it in English.

The torch bearer was 2018 national marathon winner Niamh O’Mahony of St Brendans/Oakpark and Amhrán na bhFiann was sung by 2019 national solo singing winner Gearoid Meehan Boherbee/Cloghers Manor.

Guest of honour was Gary O’Sullivan from Castleisland who won gold and silver medals  at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

The action saw children from U8s to U16s compete in a variety of track and field events and while Saturday was dry, it was a very different story on Sunday as the rains came.

But it certainly didn’t damped the enthusiasm of the participants as they competed for glory and many Tralee area groups were among the medals. See the full list of results by clicking here. Scroll down for photos from Saturday…

.
A still from the video.

BANNA Rescue are urging people to stay safe in or around the water with a new video (see below).

As the school holidays descend upon us, the award winning rescue service is warning of the potential dangers in the sea with the video made by local filmmakers.

“By the end of the week over half a million children will be on summer holidays” explained Banna Rescue Chairman Thomas Ward.

“Children are naturally curious about water and unfortunately can get caught out very quickly. It is important that the public look out for one another and ring 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if they think someone is in trouble.

“Without doubt we are kept on our toes during the Summer as tourists and locals alike flock to Kerry’s best beach (Tripadvisor 2019) to take part in water-sports, bask in the glorious weather, or simply to cool down”, continued Thomas.

“In tandem with our emergency function, our volunteer crews conduct extra beach patrols during busy periods, which are crucial as they can head off trouble before it happens.”

To drive this message home local film producers, James and Catherine McCarthy, teamed up with Banna Rescue to create a promotional piece on water safety.

The video contains safety advice from the Irish Coastguard Helicopter crew, Rescue 115; highlighting the importance of calling the Coastguard immediately if you see someone in trouble and a simulated rescue involving Banna Rescue.

On average 133 people die from drowning in Ireland every year. In 2018 during a prolonged spell of fine weather 10 people drowned accidentally in a 15 day period.

There are agencies, organisations and volunteers around the country working to reduce these figures. One such unit is Banna Rescue are part of the Community Rescue Boats Ireland, a group of independent rescue boats administered by Water Safety Ireland.

Banna Rescue is also part of the 999 / 112 Emergency Service under the Irish Coast Guard; volunteer crews are available 24/7 365 days of the year. See their website here

THERE was colour, noise and style on The Mall on Saturday afternoon as the Paco store once again held one of their famous fundraisers.

Eileen Whelan and friends welcomed all to an ‘Afternoon Tea’ fundraiser in aid of Chernobyl Children’s Fund Tralee & District.

There were fashion shows from the models, plenty of home baking and the weather thankfully played ball which made for an enjoyable few hours for passing shoppers who were generous in their donations.

In fact, around €1,000 was raised which was the highest amount gathered in a single event at the store.

“We’re delighted,” said Eileen Whelan. “I want to thank everyone for coming. The people of Tralee once again showed how caring and generous they are. People donated cakes and other home baking while businesses gave some lovely spot prizes for the raffle. I want to thank everyone who helped out today and hopefully it will help towards bringing children over to Ireland for some respite,” said Eileen. Scroll down for photos…
