Zoe O’Connor: It’s Tough Being Positive With This Weather

Jasmine
.

Zoe 1TECHNICALLY, winter is over.

You wouldn’t know it considering that we are going through the storm alphabet like there is no tomorrow. When we got to Gertrude I decided that I want the job of choosing those names. All I am saying is that if we ever get to Z, it better be called Zoë.

I talk a lot about positivity on here, but I guess it gets a little bit harder when you are faced with grey morning after grey morning. It’s okay to admit that it is hard to pursue that ‘glass half full’ attitude after such a horrible winter, and summer really, if we are all being honest with ourselves.

I think Irish people as a whole are obsessed with the weather. You can’t deny it. It’s the first topic of small talk conversation; no matter what you are talking about, any good home grown Irish person can change the topic to weather.

It’s oddly fascinating now that you think about it. Entire news programmes can be dedicated to it. So I guess it only makes sense that when the weather starts to let us down, and we can no longer put a new angle on the incessant rainfall, that we start to get a little sad about it.

That is completely okay to admit.

Another thing about the Irish people, is that we tend to pretend that everything is okay all the time. Unless you are flipping Dora the Explorer, I can guarantee you, that’s not true.

Yet people continue to insist that there lives purely consist of rainbows and ponies.

People ask you how you are and you have to come up with some elaborate story to prove that you actually have your life together. It’s turn into some sort of messed up competition to see who is currently living the better life. Maybe I don’t expect people to be totally honest with each other in these random small talk conversations, but maybe we should be honest with ourselves.

(I know we got pretty deep there, grab your snorkel everyone)

If your current ‘down in the dumps’ attitude does not have to do with the weather, and in fact you can’t come up with any such reason why you are sad at this current moment in time, that’s completely okay too.

We’re only human. You can actually have that idyllic Disney Channel-esque lifestyle and still feel like rubbish. There is no reason or explanation for it, but it’s okay to admit that it happens. It’s okay to wallow in it for a little while before picking yourself back up again.

But just remember that you can pick yourself back up. No matter how hard it seems to fight through the wind and the rain every day of the week, you can do it.

Just think of it like this, if Teresa Mannion can do it, so can you.

I would still like a little sunshine though…

Until Next Week x

DEPUTY Tom Fleming pulling out of the General Election race was the catalyst for a second Healy Rae candidate to join the ticket.

Speaking to Traleetoday.ie on Thursday afternoon at the Courts Services office in Tralee, where he was handing in his election papers, Cllr Danny Healy Rae said “we’re confident we’ll give it a fair run”.

“People have been asking us for days and days, and certainly because Tom Fleming pulled out of that side of the constituency side, so many more people were asking [if I would run],” said Cllr Danny Healy Rae.

He will run alongside his brother Micheal becoming the 16th candidate in Kerry.

“Traditionally over the years the Healy Raes have given a first class service to the people. In order to continue that service and represent the county we feel we can do a better job with two of us running,” said the councillor.

The move is certainly going to cause a stir around the county we enter the final two weeks of the campaign.

IF the election went by the votes cast by those present at a Tralee Chamber Alliance event this morning, Arthur Spring wouldn’t have much to worry about in two weeks time.

Many of Kerry’s candidates in the forthcoming General Election gave their views on a number of local and national issues at a special event in the Manor West Hotel on Thursday morning.

Organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance and supported by AIB, the breakfast event allowed business people in town to put a series of questions to the candidates and to give their own votes by secret ballot as to who they want to be elected in Kerry in two weeks time.

Continued below…

MC John Drummey went around to the tables where candidates were asked about the primary issues of jobs in town, vacant premises, the reduction of the 23% VAT rate, funding for tourism, broadband, support for local entrepreneurs and much more.

In a lighter moment, each candidate present was asked if they had to vote for another candidate in Kerry, outside of themselves or their own party, who would they give their No.1 to.

Fianna Fail’s John Brassil, after much hesitation, said he’d probably vote for “my cousin”, Labour TD Arthur Spring. His party colleague Norma Moriarty said the same.

Michael Fitzgerald of the Green Party plumped for Donal Corcoran of Renua who duly returned the favour. Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin and Jimmy Deenihan opted for their coalition partner Arthur Spring, who in turn said he’d opt for one of the Fine Gael candidates.

This was picked up on by Michael Healy Rae who said: “Well if there’s one thing we’ve learnt this morning, it’s that Arthur Spring is going to head the poll!”

The south Kerry man said he’d give the vote to Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris.

At the end of the meeting the results of the secret ballot were given and saw local man Arthur Spring in first, Minister Deenihan in second, John Brassil on third, Michael Healy Rae in fourth, while fifth was Brendan Griffin.

THE awards presentation for the Donal Walsh LiveLife Film Competition took place at the ‘Live Life Love’ day on Wednesday, at the Brandon Conference Centre, in Tralee.

The event, which is now in its third year, had over 700 attendees, and was in honour of Donal, a special teenager who spread the message of the importance of living life.

The first place winners on the day were Scoil an Spoirid Naomh in the Primary Schools Section, Darragh Clarke of Mercy Mounthawk in the Secondary School Section and Malcolm Willis and Noel McElligott in the Adult Section (see full results below).

At the event, Kerry Footballers, Marc Ó Sé and Aidan O’Mahony, spoke about the legacy and the impact Donal has left behind while headlining act, Hermitage Green, supplied the music.

There were performances by Chapter 2,  Paulie O’Brien, and 12 year old Joshua Roche while The Animal Roadshow brought along their animals for attendees to interact with.

Mary Lucey of the Live Life Foundation said: “Live Life Love Day is in its third annual event and in honour of Donal Walsh and the accumulation of months of work for the national film competition. The whole idea is that people capture the world and living life to the full in a two minute clip.”

“There are over 700 attending today and we’ll be screening the shortlisted films and the awards will be sponsored by Dairymaster. All the bands are giving up their time to play.” she said.

Fionnbar Walsh, father of Donal, spoke about the event; “It’s doubled in size every year and we have 60 films entered into the event and it’s all to spread the message Donal started about living life, enjoying it, and making the most of it.

“There’s schools from all over the country. There’s schools from Dublin, Wexford, Kerry. Schools from vertically all over. It’s just amazing how it has caught on. The theme of the films is to Live Life and you have to show how you feel about living life,” he said.

Ardfert National School was among those  highly commended for their entry into the Primary Schools’ category of the the highly competitive competition.

One of the teachers, who helped the children produce the film, spoke: “The film was a collaboration between Ardfert, Killury and Abbeydorney National Schools. The schools came together and made a project and it focused on all the animals and the variety of life in our world and how much we have to do to protect them because it’s their world too.”

The IT Tralee TV & Film Society was also awarded as runners up for their entry in the Adult category of the competition.

Michael Simpson, who accepted the award on behalf of the society, spoke: “We made it as the I.T Tralee TV & Film Society but because of the timetable, we only saw the deadline for entry two days before it. Within six hours we had to come up with an idea and film it.”

“Our film is to show how each person can have their hobbies and be their own individuals within the college. We can make their world into our world and keep it seen. We are very happy with the outcome of it,” he continued.

“It was stressful to make it because we only had six hours and I was sitting up in college on my own trying to edit it as quick as I could; but it was very rewarding because of the lessons and skills learned from it,” he said.

The film can be watched below…

The society were runners up to a winning film of a high standard, which was written and directed by Killarney native, Malcolm Willis.

His film started as dark and atmospheric but had a great twist which brought to light the importance of living life.

Are You Undecided On Who To Vote For? This Website Could Make Up Your Mind

Smartvote.ie
Smartvote.ie

A WEBSITE has popped up that could give undecided General Election 2016 voters a helping hand figuring out who to give their vote to.

Smartvote.ie is an app and website that asks 30 questions ranging from health, immigration, Job Bridge and abortion.

Users can rank each issue by level of importance to them.

Those answers are matched with the views of each candidate in the constituency, all of which have been asked to provide answers to the site.

It must be noted that in Kerry, independents Michael Healy Rae and Henry Gaynor views are not represented because they have as yet to provide any answers to Smart Vote.

Also, Tom Fleming remains on the list despite pulling out last Friday.

To take the test, on the homepage you will be greeted by a search bar, type in the area or street you live in as opposed to the county/constituency.

After completing the questions and getting your closest matched candidates, you can run through some of the answers given by candidates for each issue.

Developed by the UCD innovation academy, Smart Vote describes itself as the ‘Tinder for politics’. In the last two weeks the site has had over 40,000 new users.

A GROUP of students at Mercy Mounthawk are trying to raise funds for a monument to show Tralee’s inclusivity when it comes to all cultures and religions.

The Youth Social Innovators group is called ‘Generation I’ and their aim is to make other cultures feel welcome in Ireladand.

This week they were celebrating Chinese New Year by selling fortune cookies to raise money for the monument. It is being made by stonemason Billy Leen and is to be erected in the Town Park when completed.

An inscription on the monument will read: “Tralee welcomes all cultures and creeds to embrace the green within”. The names of all students with origins in different countries in the school will also appear on the monument.

Mary Daly, President, Food Safety Professional Association, said: “This year was an outstanding one for the Food Safety Assurance Awards in terms of the high standards of quality from all entrants. Thirteen colleges, hospitals and caterers have been recognised for their excellence in food safety across a number of several criteria. These awards really embody all that is great about Irish food producers, and encourage food businesses to reach and maintain high standard of food safety.’’

Dr Pamela Byrne, CEO, Food Safety Authority Ireland (FSAI), said: “The legal onus is on all food businesses to have robust food safety management systems in place to ensure the food they are producing and selling to consumers is safe to eat.  The FSAI is a resource for food safety and hygiene information and we urge all food businesses to take full advantage of the advice that is available to them.”

‘Frozen Fest’ Party To Attracts Hundreds To North Kerry Venue

AFTER a fantastic event last year, a north Kerry nightclub is again to welcome a very different clientele than usual for the ‘FrozenFest’ party next month.

Around 500 people from north Kerry, many from Tralee, went to JD’s Nightclub in Ballybunion last March, where the venue was transformed into Arendelle for the event. Children enjoyed numerous activites and met the characters from the popular animated movie phenomenon.

This year the fun will take place on Sunday, March 13, from 2pm to 5pm with nail and face painting stands, a disco, a screening of the movie, bouncy castle, food stands and much, much more which will keep the little ones happy for hours.

The event is being run by the Ballybunion Events committee with all monies raised going towards funding further events in the year.

Tickets are €10 for children while adults go free and there are family discounts available.

Tickets go on sale in Supervalu Ballybunion and Mike Joyce Post Office in Ballybunion on Monday, February 15 or can be pre-ordered and collected from Sundaes Ice-Cream Parlour (call Joanna on 086-0523089) on the day of the event. Check out the event’s Facebook page here

Orlagh Winters: The Horror Of ‘Revenge Porn’

Fels Point Insert
.

Orlagh New 1VERY little at this stage of my life surprises me but I was horrified to read about the alleged behaviour of a few UCD male students.

They are said to have set up a group on What’s App and shared pictures of naked girls that they had slept with and then these perfect gentleman rated the girls.

So this is the future male population? God help us all.

Continued below…

Jasmine
.

There were lots of comments from people who felt that it was the fault of the girls for allowing their photos to be taken. Some of the girls did not know that the photos were taken and others did.

This, however is not the point. The point is that this – if proved to be the case – is a total invasion of privacy and is abuse of these girls.

All types of social media can be dangerous as when a photo is posted it is then the property of Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Continued below…

Ashe Hotel Insert
.

What’s App operates like a phone service and the photo is private to those you send it to unless they share it.

It is reported that the girls had no idea that their naked bodies were the subject of such amusement to these half-wits. I am sure their parents must be very proud and one wonders if it were their sister’s photo that was being passed around, would the enjoyment be so great.

Porn revenge is a real problem in today’s world and I really do feel for young girls who are trying to find their way in such a cruel society.

There is a portion of the young males in this country who really do see women as only sex objects and are there solely for their gratification. The “Jock” element is alive and well it would seem.

Siamsa Ad Insert
.

I took some solace in the fact that the powers that be in the college have taken the step to investigate the matter and to expel all those who are found guilty of this disgusting behaviour. I really do hope that the girls take it further and that the boys are in front of a judge in the not too distant future.

Like everything in the world, education is key to helping young people make the right decisions.

Schools should, I believe, educate students of the dangers of allowing your photo to be taken and more importantly should educate them on how wrong it is to share these photos with friends.

There have been many times that I have been grateful that social media was not around when I was a student as I certainly did things that I wouldn’t want to be shown. (Not naked pics mind)

I hope these girls can put this behind them and that these boys get what they deserve.

Until next week,

Look out for the young in your life!

With Over Two Weeks To Go Here’s How The Bookies Think The Election Will Go In Kerry

Cycling Ad Insert 1

Michael Healy Rae is a dead cert to be re-elected according to bookies.

OPERATING with the perceived wisdom that “the bookies are always right”, with just two and a half weeks to voting, we had a look at how the 2016 General Election betting is shaping up for the new five seat Kerry constituency.

According to Paddy Power, they’re banking on business as usual for four current TDs to stay in the job.  Fianna Fail’s John Brassil is also odds-on to be elected, but Labour’s Arthur  Spring and Fianna Fail’s Norma Moriarty are still very much in the mix.

Continued below…

Ashe Hotel Insert
.

The current betting has Michael Healy Rae storming back in the doors of Leinster House looking a dead cert to retain a seat at 1/50. You won’t get much value on Jimmy Deenihan either at 1/33 or Martin Ferris (1/20) while Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin is less of a certainty at 1/7.

Following the withdrawal independent Tom Fleming it’s all to play for that final seat.

The bookies have John Brassil at odds-on for the fifth seat at 2/9, with sitting TD Arthur Spring at 6/4. Fianna Fáil’s Norma Moriarty is at 9/4 and then there’s a big gap to the rest of the field.

But two and a half weeks is a long time in politics!

Meanwhile, Michael Healy Rae is favourite at 6/4 with Boylesports to get the most first preference votes in the  ahead of Enda Kenny at 2/1. Paddy Power though put the Kerry man at 15/8 second favourite, just behind Michael Lowry at 13/8.

Here’s the Kerry betting…

1. Michael Healy-Rae (Ind) 1/50
2. Jimmy Deenihan (Fine Gael) 1/33
3. Martin Ferris (Sinn Fein) 1/20
4. Brendan Griffin (Fine Gael) 1/7
5. John Brassil (Fianna Fail) 2/9
6. Arthur Spring (Labour) 6/4
7. Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fail) 9/4
8. Brian Finucane (AAA-PBP) 33/1
9. Grace O’Donnell (Fine Gael) 40/1
10. Michael O’Gorman (Ind) 40/1
11. Kevin Murphy (Ind) 40/1
12. Mary Fitzgibbon (Ind) 80/1

MEMBERS of Castlegregory Golf Club handed over a cheque to volunteers at Recovery Haven after a hugely successful fundraiser recently.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday, January 22 for the Strictly Come Dancing event and people gave generously to both the club and Recovery Haven.

On Saturday morning the Recovery Haven welcomed the members who gave them a cheque for €500.

“It’s fantastic to give the money to such a worthy cause,” said Castlegregory Golf Club member, Geraldine Flynn, who was joint MC and helped organise the night.

“There isn’t a family that hasn’t been affected by cancer and it’s a fantastic support service here,” she said.

Eileen Comerford, a volunteer at Recovery Haven, was delighted with the contribution.

“We’re thrilled to have the proceeds from the competition. It’s a great benefit for us to have an outside community donate to us here and as we get no Government funding, we’re totally dependent of wonderful people like those at Castlegregory Golf Club,” said Eileen.

THE Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) have awarded Coláiste Gleann Lí, Tralee, the ‘Shield’ Anti-Bullying Flag in recognition for their work in strengthening their preventative and proactive approach to bullying.

Several schools in Kerry have decided take action to positively engage with the ISPCCs Shield Campain, but Coláiste Gleann Lí is the first in the county to take extra steps to reach the six necessary criteria to attain this award.

Some of the steps include completing the ISPCC Shield My School of Anti-Bullying Toolkit, ensuring a dedicated Anti-Bullying coordinator is assigned within the school and installing the ISPCC ‘Stand Up’ Report Tool to their web page.

Richard Lawlor, Principal of Coláiste Gleann Lí, said; “this award is a testament to our core values of learning, caring, respect and inclusion and we are very proud, but not surprised, to be the first school in Kerry to receive the ‘Anti-bullying flag’.”

The prestigious flag sends a message to the local community that the school has made concrete efforts and is dedicated to working hard in preventing bullying. The ISPCC commended the school on their continuous efforts over the last few months.

The ISPCC invites other post-primary and also primary schools, local sporting clubs with a juvenile section, youth clubs and preschools in Kerry to participate in the Shield Anti Bullying Campaign.

For more information on the Shield Campaign, you can visit www.ispcc.ie/shield and or contact the National Anti-Bullying Co-Coordinator, Sinead McKee, at smckee@ispcc.ie.
