With Over Two Weeks To Go Here’s How The Bookies Think The Election Will Go In Kerry

Michael Healy Rae is a dead cert to be re-elected according to bookies.

OPERATING with the perceived wisdom that “the bookies are always right”, with just two and a half weeks to voting, we had a look at how the 2016 General Election betting is shaping up for the new five seat Kerry constituency.

According to Paddy Power, they’re banking on business as usual for four current TDs to stay in the job.  Fianna Fail’s John Brassil is also odds-on to be elected, but Labour’s Arthur  Spring and Fianna Fail’s Norma Moriarty are still very much in the mix.

Continued below…

Ashe Hotel Insert
.

The current betting has Michael Healy Rae storming back in the doors of Leinster House looking a dead cert to retain a seat at 1/50. You won’t get much value on Jimmy Deenihan either at 1/33 or Martin Ferris (1/20) while Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin is less of a certainty at 1/7.

Following the withdrawal independent Tom Fleming it’s all to play for that final seat.

The bookies have John Brassil at odds-on for the fifth seat at 2/9, with sitting TD Arthur Spring at 6/4. Fianna Fáil’s Norma Moriarty is at 9/4 and then there’s a big gap to the rest of the field.

But two and a half weeks is a long time in politics!

Meanwhile, Michael Healy Rae is favourite at 6/4 with Boylesports to get the most first preference votes in the  ahead of Enda Kenny at 2/1. Paddy Power though put the Kerry man at 15/8 second favourite, just behind Michael Lowry at 13/8.

Here’s the Kerry betting…

1. Michael Healy-Rae (Ind) 1/50
2. Jimmy Deenihan (Fine Gael) 1/33
3. Martin Ferris (Sinn Fein) 1/20
4. Brendan Griffin (Fine Gael) 1/7
5. John Brassil (Fianna Fail) 2/9
6. Arthur Spring (Labour) 6/4
7. Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fail) 9/4
8. Brian Finucane (AAA-PBP) 33/1
9. Grace O’Donnell (Fine Gael) 40/1
10. Michael O’Gorman (Ind) 40/1
11. Kevin Murphy (Ind) 40/1
12. Mary Fitzgibbon (Ind) 80/1

THE Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) have awarded Coláiste Gleann Lí, Tralee, the ‘Shield’ Anti-Bullying Flag in recognition for their work in strengthening their preventative and proactive approach to bullying.

Several schools in Kerry have decided take action to positively engage with the ISPCCs Shield Campain, but Coláiste Gleann Lí is the first in the county to take extra steps to reach the six necessary criteria to attain this award.

Some of the steps include completing the ISPCC Shield My School of Anti-Bullying Toolkit, ensuring a dedicated Anti-Bullying coordinator is assigned within the school and installing the ISPCC ‘Stand Up’ Report Tool to their web page.

Richard Lawlor, Principal of Coláiste Gleann Lí, said; “this award is a testament to our core values of learning, caring, respect and inclusion and we are very proud, but not surprised, to be the first school in Kerry to receive the ‘Anti-bullying flag’.”

The prestigious flag sends a message to the local community that the school has made concrete efforts and is dedicated to working hard in preventing bullying. The ISPCC commended the school on their continuous efforts over the last few months.

The ISPCC invites other post-primary and also primary schools, local sporting clubs with a juvenile section, youth clubs and preschools in Kerry to participate in the Shield Anti Bullying Campaign.

For more information on the Shield Campaign, you can visit www.ispcc.ie/shield and or contact the National Anti-Bullying Co-Coordinator, Sinead McKee, at smckee@ispcc.ie.

The warning  remains in place until 8pm this evening.

Tralee Imperials Basketball Club News

Tralee ImperialsRESULTS FOR THE WEEK:

Improved display not enough for Team Garveys against Rockets:
Ulster Rockets: 73
Team Garveys: 63

Team Garveys made the long trek to Belfast on Saturday and despite a much improved display came up just short against a bang in form Ulster Rockets. The game ebbed and flowed throughout, with little separating the sides until a final flourish from Rockets created the 11 point gap that did not do justice to Team Garveys.

Rockets led 16-15 at first quarter, and 35-31 at the half, thanks in the main to the brilliance of American star Emma O Connor who dominated the boards and hit 12 points, aided and abetted by the three point shooting of Louisa Donnelly. Tralee remained in close contact throughout the half however, with Rheanne O Shea, Sinead Mackessy, Laura Hoffman and Amy Fitzgerald top scoring.

Rockets hit a purple patch early in the second half to open up a 13 point gap at one stage, with Anna Maguire in great shooting form, and led by 10 entering the final quarter. Team Garveys had little luck around the boards in this quarter, and while an injury to Deirdre Geaney which necessitated her withdrawal didn’t help matters, the driving force of Deirdre Kearney and Cassandra Buckley continued to create openings, many of which were spurned.

The fourth quarter rally from Tralee augurs well for their remaining games. Led superbly by Buckley and O Shea, and playing with great intensity on defence, Tralee had the gap down to 3 points with just 3 minutes on the clock. It could well have gone anyway but home court advantage and the greater composure from the Rockets saw them ease home with a couple of well taken threes in the final minutes.

Team Garveys now prepare for Castleisland at home next Friday night at Mounthawk Gym at 8:30pm, and will be hoping that their recent inept performance against their local rivals will be put behind them on the night. On this display there is good reason to think so.

Team: Sinead Mackessy 14, Rheanne O Shea 17, Amy Fitzgerald 16, Cassandra Buckley 7, Laura Hoffman 3, Deirdre Geaney 4, Deirdre Kearney 2, Caoimhe Teahan, Rebecca Ryan.

Under 14 Div 1 Girls

Castleisland 30
Tralee Imperials 33.

Tralee Imperials continued their good run to stay top of the table. Imperials led 9-7 at end of first quarter. Castleisland hit back in the second quarter and won it 13-7 to lead 20-16 at half time. Imperials came out strong in the third quarter and won it 7-13 to leave it 27-29 going in to final quarter.

The final quarter was very tight with Castle island getting a basket to draw level, we then went about 5 minutes with a basket. Then Tralee scored a basket and then got free throws and scored 1 and got free throws again and scored 1 and then Castleisland got free throws and scored 1 to leave the final score 30-33.

A fantastic display by every player. Full squad Aoife Dillane, Alison Guerin, Lara Flynn, Grainne Carmody, Abi Casey, Rachel Killgallen, Mary O’ Connell, Rebecca Conway, Ciara Rath, Emily O’Donoghue, Sophie Lowham,Mimi King, Sarah Healy and Mairead Kearney.

U12 Girls Cup Final:

Preparations were not ideal for our u12 Girls Division 1 KABB Cup Final due to sickness and injury to key players, however, they left all their energy on the court against a physically stronger Kenmare side to come out runners up in a fantastic game on Sunday last in the Pres Gym in Killarney.

Imperials got off to a slow start and never got to grips with the intensity and sharp shooting of the Kenmare girls to go in at half time on a scoreline of 26-9 to Kenmare. However, with an encouraging team talk from coaches Mairead and Xavier, the girls showed great heart and determination in getting some nice scores through fantastic team work.

They hassled well in defence in the last quarter and narrowed the gap well to leave the full time score 37-26 to Kenmare. Well done to the u12 Division 1 girls and their coaches on their excellent progress to date. They are playing Glenbeigh on Tuesday evening away in the County League where they are currently placed at the top of the table.

Team: Clodagh Murray, Aoife o Rourke, Ella Breen, Aisling Ni Hainifin, Niamh Collins, Grace Reidy, Emma Dewey, Jane Akinrinlade, Kirby Anne Ryan, Roise o Donnell, Siuna Crowe.

FRIENDS of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway held a public walk on Sunday, February 8, to highlight the disappointment at the uncompleted Tralee to Fenit Walkway.

Despite the bad weather, over 80 people took part in the walk, which started at St. Brendan’s Church and finished at Mounthawk.

The group has been involved in the project for almost ten years and would like to the council to get moving on completing the route. At the moment the project to extend it towards Fenit is at a standstill.

Michael O’Neill, organiser of the walk, said; “All we want them to do is apply for planning permission and flush out any people who are against it.

It’s not a very costly project. I reckon a million euros will do it and it’s in everybody’s interest. The one in town has been a huge success.  What’s the delay? We don’t understand it. All we’re saying is let’s finish it out,” he continued.

“We’ve waited a long time for this and want it to be finished off in 2016. It’ll only take three or four months work and there are health benefits, tourism benefits and it also benefits the community. It gives us safe options and keeps walkers and cyclists off the road and gives more safety to kids. It’s a no-brainer,” he said.

If you would like to keep up with their news, you can check out their website: https://traleetofenitcycleway.wordpress.com/ or their Facebook at Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

GAELCHOLÁISTE Chiarraí students enjoyed success in the Scléip competition held in Dublin last week.

The school had six acts in the All-Ireland of Scléip and while singers, musicians and creative dancers put on a spectacular display it was the TY drama group who won the day with their Coiste Cróinéara, where members of the 1916 Rising  were posthumously put on trial.

Páirteach sa drama bhí Euan Ó Beoláin, Ciarán Ó Nualláin Tadhg, Máire Ní Threantaigh, Cian Ó Cianáin, Seán Ó hÁinle, Jeaic Mac Ginneá agus Carrie Ní Dhubhlainn.

Eight first year students sang leaganacha Gaeilge of “Riptide and By My Side”, eighteen TY students produced a leagan Gaeilge of “Footloose”, an eighties classic, and other Gaelcholáiste acts to reach this All-Ireland talent show included jazz piano and creative dance.

“The school has always fostered an interest in the arts, in creativity and in self-expression and Scléip is the ideal platform for such interests” said Michelle D’Altúin.

Scléip is a talent show that is exclusive to Irish speaking schools.

PHOTOS: Five Worries Kerry Supporters Will Have After Roscommon Defeat

Siamsa Ad Insert

Despite the ‘it’s only the league’ factor, should Kerry fans be concerned about the attitude to the spring series? Gavin O’Connor gives five reasons to be worried about Kerry under-performing during the early part of the year…

1. Where is the youth?

2014 was a fantastic year. All-Ireland 37 was won and more importantly for our current situation, an All-Ireland minor title was achieved for the first time in 20 years.

A year and half on we’ve saw two players from that side blooded,  Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Tom O’Sullivan. Considering the panel has been hit with absenteeism at the beginning of the league, that seems like a meagre amount.

It’s telling that Brian Ó Beaglaoich has been one of the better performers. With every ball, he’s playing for his Kerry career.

Players as good, with minor medals in their back pockets, Cormac Coffey, Mark O’Connor, Andrew Barry, Matthew Flaherty, Micheál Burns and Liam Kearney are the future of Kerry football and with bags of talent and everything to play for they could jolt this team back into life.

Last year, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, welcomed the return of Paul Galvin, saying as long as Paul is one of the best 30 players in the county he will have him on the panel. Perhaps a few more young fellas need their chance now.

2. Why are we so static?

Watching our attack, it was worrying how static they were, as they waited for ball to come into it them, especially during the second half.

Too often players made runs forward towards the ball instead of moving across. Tommy Walsh, was the victim of a lot of poor supply but he didn’t make it easy for his forwards either. When Donaghy is at full-forward he is most often operating from the most dangerous positions around the square. When he moves, he heads to the wings, not out.

Diagonal movement will stretch defenses when players come out to receive the ball they are moving further from scoring range.

3. Mounting defeats over the last 12 months

Starting from the beginning of 2015 National League, Kerry have played 16 times in all competitions winning six, drawing twice and losing eight times. The league record in that time is five losses in nine.

We all know the business end of the All-Ireland is the only time that really matters, but management can’t be happy with the amount of games this Kerry teams is losing.

Kerry Roscommon 13

Yes, you can point to to key players being absent, but this is the third time in four league campaigns Kerry have lost their opening two matches.

These losses have put the side on the back foot, fighting relegation, which has hampered any chance of experimenting with personnel.

Considering we’ve needed last minute points from other teams and stayed up purely because of points difference, can anyone say relegation won’t be overdue if it comes?

4. In the relegation mix up once more

Eamonn Fitzmaurice, will in all likelihood be glad of the three week break. It gives him ample time to put defeats in the past and welcome back key men, Kieran Donaghy, Bryan Sheehan, Anthony Maher and perhaps Colm Cooper.

Next it will be a must win match in Newry against Down, followed by Donegal at home, Mayo and Monaghan on the road and a potential relegation decider against Cork in Austin Stack Park.

Three wins is generally enough to spare a team from the drop, a loss in either of Kerry’s two home games or against Down and it becomes very tricky.

Kerry Roscommon 29

5. Fitzmaurice feeling pressure for the first time?

The Finuge man took on his three year stint in 2013 and in the first two years the team exceeded expectations. Kerry weren’t given much of chance against Dublin in 2013, but the game turned out to be an epic with Kerry exposing a number of Dublin weaknesses.

An All-Ireland from from nowhere came the following year and even though the performance was poor in last year’s decider, the record will show Fitzmaurice brought Kerry within three points of  back to back titles.

Kerry supporters are known to be without sentiment when it comes to their sitting manager and nobody needs to tell Eamonn Fitzmaurice what’s required now to sate football fans in the county as the year progresses.

Boys U12 Cup Final:

St. Brendan’s 34 – St. Bridget’s 30

Following on from the Senior Men winning the National Intermediate Cup last weekend, the St. Brendan’s U12s landed the U12 KABB Cup title with a hard fought 34-30 win over St. Bridget’s from Currow at the Presentation Gym in Killarney last Saturday.

Brendan’s got off to a good start with scores from Eddie Sheehy and Jack Doyle and led by 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

However St. Bridget’s stretched the Brendan’s defence to outscore the Tralee side by ten points to four in the second quarter and took a two point lead to the half time break 18-16.

The third quarter saw St. Brendan’s take back the initiative and the lead from Bridget’s by adding ten points to their tally and bringing a two point advantage into the final quarter.

Brendan’s defence was holding tough through Donal O’Sullivan and Coren Hughes and this allowed the likes of Andrew Wallace, Cian Griffin, Jack Doyle and Eddie Sheehy to capitalise with fast break baskets. In an exciting last quarter that saw both sides have chances to claim the title, it was Brendan’s that pulled clear to win by four on a final scoreline of St. Brendan’s 34 St. Bridget’s 30.

Boys U14 Div 1

KCYMS 30 – St. Brendan’s 38

Our under 14 team travelled to Killorglin on Saturday to face KCYMS in the County League. The boys still without the services of James Fernane and Niall Fitzmaurice started the game well with early baskets from Tadgh Reen and Jimi O Sullivan.

KCYMS responded well but Rap Buivydas settled things with a deep three pointer. The 2nd quarter saw both sides struggle to dominate but Peter Kearns did manage to score all of our three quarter points. With that we trailed 15-14 at the half.

Rap Buivydas simply took the game over from here on scoring 22 of 24 points for the boys and finishing the game as the runaway top scorer. Brendan’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 30-38 and keep pressure on league leaders St Mary’s who visit us next Sunday in Moyderwell at 1.30.

Next up is TK Bobcats in Moyderwell on Wednesday 12th with tip-off at 7pm. The boys have been playing fantastic and are on a great run of form. Long may it continue.

Kerry Badminton Association News

Badminton AssociationPhase two of the CPC.IE sponsored Kerry singles Badminton championships took place at the Killarney Sports Centre on Friday last with the ladies and mens championships for divisions 2 and 4.

The fare served up, the buzz that consistently reverberated around the hall and the glorious uncertainty of most of the high class contests played made the action on Friday night last one of the greatest spectacles that ever graced the badminton courts of Kerry.

Even though the standard throughout was of a high calibre one of the most pleasing aspects of the night from a Kerry Badminton Association viewpoint was the amount of teenagers that competed and indeed were successful in three out of the four competitions played.

In the mens division 2 competition both semi finals were classics. In the opening one last weeks division 1 runner up James Flaherty of Moyvane took on his Munster under 17 partner Jonathan Keane of Castleisland and what a semi final this proved to be. Playing beautiful controlled Badminton the Castleisland youth took the first set but the Moyvane man settled into his task and took the two remaining sets to book his final place.

The second all Moyvane semi final saw Donnacha Moloney take on Donie Enright and in a marathon match it was Enright who ousted the gallant Moloney in another 3 setter.

It was now Donie Enright up against his club colleague, James Flaherty and from the outset it was teenager Flaherty that dominated the match and despite the best efforts of Enright it was Flaherty’s title in two sets by 21-11; 21-9.

The ladies division 2 contest was equally exciting. Killarney’s Sinead Galvin went into this competition rated as top seed following her Munster junior singles title win the previous Sunday but what a fright she got from 15 year old Niamh Flaherty of Moyvane, sister o mens singles winner, James.

This teenager has talent in abundance and pushed Mrs Galvin the full way in a wonderful 3 set encounter but it was the Killarney ladies power and experience that brought her to victory in a heart stopping contest.

The second semi final saw Castleisland’s Catherine Murphy take on last weeks division 3 singles winner Helen Brown of Moyvane and it was the Castleisland lady who won her way to contest the decider

What a close encounter this final proved to be. Nearing the close of the first set the sides were level at both 17 and 18 each but it was Ms. Murphy that closed out that set winning by 21-18.

The second set saw Murphy take a 3-1 lead but Galvin led at 10-8 but Murphy levelled at 12 all and never looked back after that winning the set and title by 21-17.

The ladies div 4 final was the only 3 set final of the night and this saw last years division 5 winner, Dingle’s Rachel O’Connor take on Aoife Moloney representing the Listowel club. It was teenager O’Connor who set the pace in the first set which she won by 21-15 but it was a battling Moloney that came out for the second set which saw her win by 21-17.

The third and final set was a cracker with Moloney leading early on but it was O’Connor who edged her way in front at the break by 11-9 but these two game battlers were again level at 16 all, 18 all and 19 all.

It was the Listowel girl who went to match point at 20-19 but the brave O’Connor who battled back to level again at 20 all with the tie break for 2 called and it was the Dingle girl who seized the initiative and got those two vital tie break points to win the title by 22-20.

The mens division 4 final was an all West Kerry confrontation battle between two more teenagers, Dingle’s Brian O’Connor and Annascaul’s Brendan McGovern.

The old adage of “You have to lose one, to win one” certainly bore fruit in this West Kerry battle. Last season Annascaul’s McGovern lost out in the County division 5 decider but what a fine player he has now blossomed into.

The Division 4 Kerry Badminton Singles took place Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre Friday 05 February. This photograph shows the winner of the Division 4 Mens Singles Title Brendan McGovern(Annascaul).
The winner of the Division 4 Mens Singles Title Brendan McGovern (Annascaul) which took place Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on Friday.

His defeat of top seed and raging hot favourite, Moyvane’s Jamie Elliott in an epic 3 set quarter final encounter lifted the Annascaul youth to a new level and in the decider he was always in command over the brave O’Connor and took his first senior title in 2 hard fought sets by 21-17; 21-14.

The next round of the Kerry championships will be the doubles to be held in Killarney on Friday night February 26th (election night). Entry forms now with club secretaries.

Before the commencement of the singles championships last Friday night in Killarney the Kerry Association hosted a very pleasant function to mark the recent retirement of County secretary Mrs. Peggy Horan.

The Association had decided to commission a new silver cup to be played for in the division 2 singles championships and this cup was launched on Friday last and named as the “Peggy Horan Perpetual Trophy”
County Chairman Mr. J. Griffin, Listowel spoke on Mrs Horans contribution to both club and County since 1979.

Vice-Chairman Mr Michael Corridan also contributed as did Tralee’s Mr. Tom Clear on behalf of the players and the President of the Killarney Club, Mr. John O’Halloran also spoke on Mrs. Horan’s input to the Killarney Club for many years.

Mrs Horan spoke herself and thanked all concerned for this great honour bestowed on her and spoke on the great bond and friendships that the sport of Badminton generates at all levels.

BUTTERFIELD CUP:

Kerry relinquished their hold on the Munster Butterfield Cup in Cappoquin on Sunday last but what a dramatic competition it proved to be.

With 5 Counties competing Kerry’s first match was in the preliminary round against Limerick. The Kingdom won this one 9-0 but the scores suggest that it was not easy as four of the ties had to go to the third set for decision. So that put the holders into the semi final against the home County.

The Kingdom went 2-0 up and were looking good but a brave Waterford fight back saw them level the match at 3 games all and the sides were again level at four games all so in this titanic struggle the berth for the place in the final depended on the third and final mixed.

This match saw Waterford’s Tanya and Colin Morrissey do battle for Waterford and Jennifer Keane and Fergal Hannon do battle for Kerry. It was the Kerry duo that took the first set and it was looking good for Kerry but the home support got behind their charges in fine style and the Decies pairing certainly responded as they took set number two to level the match.

One set to go for a Butterfield final appearance and it was the home pair who were now on fire and after a brave performance from the Kerry pair it was Waterford who took the set by 21-13.

The other semi final saw Tipperary shock Cork and this Waterford/Tipperary was the first final since 1998 that neither Cork or Kerry were represented and it was the home County that captured their first Butterfield Cup in over 20 years by defeating the Premier County side but again for the Kingdom, it was so very close.

TABLE QUIZ:

The Kerry Association will hold their Annual Table Quiz in O’Donnell’s Bar, Tralee on this Friday night to commence at 8.30 with a table of 4 being €40. All clubs are requested to support the quiz with as many tables as possible.

In recent times sports halls, shuttlecocks, etc. have increased in price and as the sport of badminton does not have the benefit of admission charges as the field sports do every fund raising activity is vital. Parents who have children playing Badminton are invited to attend the quiz or sponsor a table or part table. There will be many spot prizes on offer during the night

MUNSTER INTER COUNTY:

Kerry will have a double representation at the Munster Adult Inter County Competitions to be played in the UL Arena, Limerick on Sunday next. The Kerry teams will take part in Grade F (Div.3) and Grade F (Div.4). Both squads have trained extensively in recent times and best wishes are extended to both.

The Kerry F squad is as follows; Mariuz Tusnski (Capt), Cian Liston,Kieran Crehan,Timmy Noonan,Danny Cronin, Niamh Flaherty, Carmel Hudson,Helen Browne,Michelle Kearney, Marion McSweeney. Manager; Pat Kearney (Moyvane)

The Grader G squad as follows; Christina Quirke, Paula O Sullivan ,Aoife Moloney, Marie O Connor, Louise Behan, Brendan McGovern ,Jamie Elliot, Ger O Connor, Aidan Evans, Alan Falvey.
Manager; Jennifer Keane (Killarney)

JUVENILE CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Over 120 players took part in the Kerry juvenile singles championships played in Killarney on Saturday last and what a competition it proved to be.

Pride of place must go to Rachel O’Connor who won the Kerry division 4 title on Friday night and brought off a notable double on Saturday by winning the under 17 title

Listowel players captured 3 titles whilst clubs Killarney,Dingle,Kingdom,Annascaul and County captured 1 each which gave a great spread throughout the County.

REPORTS;

(U13) Div.1;

Killarney Celtic B 2-1 Park B:

It was lashing rain and very windy at kick off for the league game between under 13 Killarney Celtic B and Park B. The game got under way at 10.25 with Park playing against the wind and rain. Five minutes into the game the ball bounced off the Park full back and hit him on the elbow resulting in a free kick just outside the area to Killarney.

The resulting free kick found the top corner and it was 1-0. The next 15 minutes saw Killarney in control but after that Park settled and played some good football. Matt Healy made a lovely run from the left and past the keeper, took a shot which was going in, meanwhile Striker David (Tiny) Callaghan and the Celtic keeper made a dash for the ball which Tiny won and as he was about to finish the keeper got down to make the save.

Half time score 1-0. After a good half time team talk Park went out more positive and controlled the second half with 90% of the play in the Killarney half. After 20 minutes a lovely through ball from midfield saw Matt make a run for the ball which he got to before the Celtic keeper and he lifted it over and into the net.

With the score at 1-1 Park remained in control and hit the bar twice and had another shot just over. With only 2 minutes left in the game the ball was played long from the Celtic half and was well taken by their forward who scored the winning goal.

Final score 2-1. It is the first game since 2014 that Park have lost. However they still remain on top of the table and are still on course to win the league.

Austin Stacks CrestSENIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Seniors opening game of the season (round 1 of the Town League), against John Mitchels, has been brought forward 18 hours from the original time. It will now take place at the Mitchels pitch (note change of venue) on next Saturday evening (13th Feb) at 6.30pm.

In the remaining three rounds we have a home game against Na Gaeil (21st Feb) and then two more away games against Ballymac (28th Feb) and Kerins O’Rahillys (13th March). The top two teams qualify for the Final, on a date to be confirmed.

The week after that (Sun, 20th March) it’s our first major game of the season – the Final of the 2015 Co. League away to Dr. Crokes which will double up as the opening round game of this season’s Co. League.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Our round 2 Town League game against Na Gaeil did not go ahead last Saturday (6th Feb) as the continuous rain made the pitches at Killeen and Connolly Park unplayable.

Our round 3 game, at home against Ballymac, is scheduled for next Saturday (13th Feb) at 4pm but with Strom Imogen battering the whole place at the weekend we can’t be sure of anything going ahead as scheduled at the moment. Keep in touch with Club Website.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Last year it was Ardfert and Brosna who did the honours. Last Saturday (6th Feb) it was the turn of two Clubs from the southern end of the county – St. Marys and Templenoe – who won their All Ireland Finals in Croke Park.

St. Marys won the Intermediate Final (they had already won the Junior Championship back in 2011) and Templenoe won the Junior Final. Congratulations to both on a fantastic achievement.

On this form Templenoe will be formidable opponents for all teams they meet in Division 1 of the Co. League this season. We are lucky that we won’t have to encounter them until the very last round of the League – sometime next September.

CONGRATULATIONS:

To Marie Crowe (wife of former Club footballer, Billy Sheehan) who won the MacNamee Award for Sports Journalist of the Year for her superb article on how triumph (our victory in the County and Munster Club Championship 2014) and tragedy (the sadness, during that time, at the death of Darragh and Niamh Long’s one month old baby, Siún) can go hand in hand; to Tommy O’Connor (Kerry County Librarian and the North Kerry Hurling Board) on his fine publication on North Kerry Hurling; and to Radio Kerry’s Weeshie Fogarty who won the Hall of Fame Award.

Well done to all three.

SENIORS
Our Senior Team travelled to a wet and windy Churchill on Sunday last for Round 2 of  the St. Brendans Board League.  Having played against the strong wind in the 1st half our lads were happy going in at the break with a 1 point deficit.  Churchill 1 – 7 Ballymac 2 – 3.

Ballymac goal scorers being Eanna Reidy and Vincent Horan.  In the second half Ballymac added 4 points to their tally while keeping the opposition scoreless to run out winners on a final score of Ballymac 2 – 7  Churchill 1 – 7.

Next Saturday at 3.45 we welcome Kerins O Rahillys to Ballymac for a Round 1 Coiste Tra Li game.  Please check facebook and twitter for any further updates on these fixtures.

MINORS:

KERINS O RAHILLYS   4-10      BALLYMAC 3-6

Our second game in the Tralee district league was against O’Rahilly’s in Ballyrickard last Sunday morning. Heavy underfoot conditions and driving rain made it impossible to play good football.

A heroic performance by our captain Max O’ Brien and a masterclass by our stand in goalie Cathal Dunne were the main positives for us in this game. It was backs to the wall stuff for us in the first 15 minutes as we found it very hard to get out of our own half. O,Rahilly’s had notched up 1-5 before Dara Keane pointed for us.

David Long grabbed the kick out passed to D. Keane who again pointed. Cathal Dunne made two fine saves but our opponents scored another goal just before half time. The score at half time was Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-5 Ballymac 0-2.

We had a better start to the second half with Keelan kicking two points. Max O Brien then got on the scoresheet with a fine goal and Keelan pointed from a free. However two quick goals by our opponents again stretched their lead.

As the half went on Cathal made several fine saves, but O’Rahilly’s kicked two further points. Keelan pointed for us before ML. Hoare picked out D. Reagan with a perfect pass who in turn found Dara Chawke and he scored a goal from close range.

Keelan again pointed while O’Rahilly’s added two more points. D. Reagan responded by working his way through for a fine goal with our opponents getting the final point of the game. We play Austin Stacks next in this competition.

SCOR SINSEAR

Ballymac sent three teams to the Co. Final of Scor Sinsear in Castleisland on Saturday evening last.  Our Leiriu were most unlucky not to be crowned Co. Champions as they put in a faultless performance of their sketch which detailed events surrounding the War of Independence and Civil War.

However, the judges decided that Fossas piece on the 1916 rising would go forward to represent the County in Munster.  Our Set Dancers relinquished their County title when they were pipped by an excellent Spa set.

Thanks to Michael Murphy for the time and effort he dedicated to our set dancers.  Tom Herlihy, Niall Daly, Denis Daly, and Gerard Collins participated in the Quiz section but once again it was All Ireland champions Churchill who took the honours in this category following a play off victory over Rathmore.

Many thanks to all who participated in Scor Sinsear  on behalf of the Club.  A special buiochas goes to our Scor Officer Anthony Curran and his wife Nora for the tireless work they did in the coordinating of the Scor team. Tiocfaidh ar La.

COACHING SEMINAR:

The Club hosted a coaching seminar on Sunday last in Ballygarry House Hotel.  The main speaker at this event was former Kerry and Limerick inter Co. Manager Mickey Ned O Sullivan who gave all present an insight on how to bring the Club forward from a coaching perspective.

The large crowd present certainly learned a lot from his presentation.  Many thanks to Mickey for making the journey from Kenmare on such a bad day.

STRICTLY LOVE DANCING:

The day we have all been waiting for Saturday 13th February is nearly upon us when our strictly love dancing couples will show us their moves which they have been practicing for the last number of months.

Doors open at 7.00pm for an 8.00pm performance in Ballygarry.  Tickets for this event are now sold out and no cash will be accepted at the door at any stage of the night.

ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS:

Congratulations to Templenoe and St. Mary’s who won their  respective All Ireland championships in Croke Park on Sunday last, to continue Kerry’s dominance of these competitions.

Congratulations also to our neighbours John Mitchels on their recent promotion to Division 1 of the Co. League for 2016.

CIARA GRIFFIN

Well done to Ballymac native Ciara Griffin who was part of the Ireland’s Ladies Rugby team who defeated Wales in Dublin on Saturday last.

SYMPATHY

The Club extends its sympathy to Liam and Joan Brennan on the death of Liams father Mossie Brennan in Ballinskelligs.  Mossies grandchildren Mossie, Liam and Aidan play with U12 and academy level for the Club.

PLENTY to think about for the next three weeks then.

Kerry were beaten fair and square today by a game Roscommon outfit, who adapted better to the  poor footballing conditions in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

The rain and wind kept the fans away too, as just 4,507 paid in to see the proverbial ‘bad day at the office’ for a Kerry side looking bereft of ideas.

A solid second half performance from the Connaught side, playing against the wind, propelled them to victory and Eamonn Fitzmaurice is faced with an uphill battle now for the rest of Kerry’s league campaign.

Kerry, playing against the wind in the first half, started well and were 0-3 to 0-0 up in the first eight minutes thanks to Barry John Keane’s frees.

Roscommon came back though and hit the next eight points without reply, but Kerry hit back with points from Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh and then a goal on 31 minutes.

Stephen O’Brien picked up the ball 35 yards out, sped down left wing leaving two defenders for dead, before cutting back across in front of goal and slotting it past the Roscommon goalkeeper.

A fine Johnny Buckley point put Kerry ahead 1-6 to 0-8 up at half-time.

Logic dictated that a Kerry side playing with the wind in the second half would kick on and secure the points.

Roscommon though had other ideas. They were tenacious and stuck with Kerry score for score until the 22nd minute when they went ahead 0-13 to 1-9 and never lost the lead again.

Kerry weren’t at the races at all and couldn’t muster a decent challenge in the last 15 minutes to close the gap.

Enda Smith put Roscommon two clear with time almost up and despite an injury time point from Conor Cox, Kerry slumped to their second defeat of the league and problems ahead for the rest of the campaign. The huge crowd of travelling support in the stands erupted at the final whistle and the journey home for them won’t seem as long.

It’s hardly panic stations for Kerry though, with so many players to come back from injuries, but it was still a very poor performance from players capable of so much more.
