U-8s:

St Pats U-8’s took on Na Gaeil away in a very well organised fun game last weekend. All our u-8’s  played full games and they all had a chance to play in different positions.

All our players tried their best.  Luke Passway, Sinead Murphy, Mark Vansteenkiste,  Killian O’Mahony, Michael Enright, Justin O’Halloran and Millie O’Brien all defended well at the back. Mark O’Brien and Jack Costello worked hard around the middle to get their hands on the ball.

Darragh Murphy, Grainne Breen, Kayla O’Connor, Rory Daly, Ben Jones,  Caoilainn Culloo, Sinead Knightly gave it their all for the team. The management team of Johnny Enright, John Breen and Sean Daly were delighted with the effort and the skills each player showed in the games.

They would also like to thank all the parents / family of the players who came along gave their support.

It’s important that each player continues to improve by practicing their skills at home. We are having our last academy session for this year this Sunday 18th of Oct at 10.30am so we hope to see you all there for a bit of fun.

U-10s:

Our u10’s played an enthralling game against the u10 boys of Na Gaeil last Sunday in the glorious October sunshine.

It was a superb, exciting game between two evenly matched teams. It was another outstanding performance by our players who gave a great display of teamwork, courage and a never say die attitude.

Each player played their hearts out and we had great goals and points by Fionn Dairo, Rory Kelliher, Seanie Murphy and Caoimhe Dairo. Our backs led by the physical presence of Callum Houston, the tenacity of James Dowling and Lisa Rowan, the ever improving Orlaith Murphy, Eddie Stack and Jamie Lynch and not to forget our star back, Josh Quilter, fought hard and kept the Na Gaeil forwards at bay.

In the middle of the field, we had great displays by Caoimhe and Siobhan O’Sullivan as well as Thomas Sheehy who replaced our brilliant goalkeeper,  Paddy Moran in the second half. It was great to end our successful year on such a high with an impressive victory. We’ll done to all our great players. Naomh Pádraig Abú!

U-14s:

St Pats 1-12

Ardfert 1-10

There were great scenes  in caherslee on Sunday when st pats claimed their first bit of silver ware after loosing two finals already earlier in the year.

In what was a fantastic game by both sides st pats heart and determination won out in the end .All the st pats team preformed very well and we started the game well with quick points form Nathan Rohan , Jamie O’Brien and two frees from fergal o Brien !

Gavin doody did very well in goals as always and his kickouts were great  and with great defending by Niall McCarthy and Paddy Murphy  who both blocked ball after ball throwing every thing into it .

Brian  teahan put in a man of the match performance letting no ball pass him. Ian McCarthy, luke and Martin savage who was in centre back for Damien Quirke who was injured held the wing back line with great ease and always gave off a great ball when they won it .

The score at half time was 6 points each and st pats were just getting going !The second half started with a point form fergal and the  game was really coming to life now  and with each ardfert score st pats replied straight away.

It really was end to end stuff.Ali Gardezi did very well on one of ardfert s stronger players and kept running for the whole hour. cathal played a captains role picking up ball after ball and finding a player every time .

Fergal and Patrick both put on a master class of shooting with both scoring from placed ball and play and were still back to help the defence in the closing stages .

St pats were really growing in confidence now but we were still two points down and time was running out.

Our two wing forwards of Jamie O’Brien and Tomas O’ Sullivan won a lot of ball and sometimes won ball that they shouldn’t have and both got on the score board scoring great points .cormac Lynch left off great ball when he got it and got in to great positions in front of goals which afforded us two scores!

James and Nathan made up the full forward line and both played very well making life difficult for the ardfert backs !

That smallest man on the field entered the fray at this stage and one Danny Greaney who caught great ball and it was just what st pats needed he left off a pass to Patrick who struck for a wonder goal to put st pats in the driving seat.

Another point followed but ardfert rallied again and pushed for a goal to win it ! Gavin in goals made  a save and our fantastic defenders with stood it and we ran out two pint winners .

It was great for the the club to see Cathal mr consistent all year lift the trophy to the cheers from the great support and his proud mom looking on. This team will go far and this just topped off a great year!

Huge applause has to go to the management of Maurice Quirke and Eoin Sayers and  also Joe Costelloe and Brendan Poff when this dream team started earlier in the year. No doubt some of this team will see the green grass of Croker in time to come.

Minors

St Pats 2-13

Beale 1-10

“Good things come to those who wait!”

St Pats were crown Division 5 Minor Champions in a sun drenched Ballyduff last saturday week, overcoming a gallant Beale team , that refused to throw in the towel when when the result was no longer in doubt.

St Pats dominated this game almost in its entirity but found it difficult to shake loose of the North Kerry side. St Pats started in whirlwind fashion and were four points to the good before Beale registered their first score.

Our forwards movement was causing the opposition all sorts of trouble and indeed in the first half we had 6 different scorers with our first 7 points. Joe Quilter and Gearóid Dillane were very much getting the better of their men in the full forward line while Cian Ronan, Brandon Boyle and Tommy Lynch covered every blade of grass as they constantly sought space and pocession.

Beale were forced to foul on a regular basis to stop our runners. However, our different free takers didn’t appear to have their shooting boots with them and placed many scorable frees wide. At Half time, despite having owned the ball and territory, we were only 4 points to the good, 0-8 to 0-4.

Beale must have been thinking that, having played very poorly ,they were only 4 points down and were in with a great chance of winning.

This belief was very evident in the way they drove out our defence at the beginning of the 2nd half. Within 10 minutes they had reduced our lead to 2, 0-9 to 0-7. Jack Quilter moved from midfield to centre back , switching with Sean Dowling, a move that sealed the centre of our defence and released Sean to drive at the opposition.

Both Seán and Jack put in excellent displays and dominated the centre of the pitch The move appeared to have a settling effect on the rest of out defence. Kieran Dwyer showed why we believe that he will be a Kerry minor next year with an exceptionally solid display. Killian Quirke played with a calmness throughout the game and can be very proud of his display.

Brian Murphy completely nullified his man to such an effect that he recieved a nice “thank you” from his man, which unfortunately the referee didn’t see. Cillian O’Riordan had a great battle with his man, who it appeared hoped to run “Massey” into the ground. If he did, he definitely picked the wrong man as Cillian stuck like glue to him.

Having weathered the storm, St Pats found the net through Tommy Lynch to put clear daylight between the sides. Beale refused to wilt and in a fantastic move broke through the cover. One of their forwards unleashed a shot that was rifling towards the top right hand corner.

That was until Aidan O’Halloran threw himself to his left and parried the ball to safety. Nothing sort of a fantastic save. Aidan’s kick out were absolutely superb, find Jordan Conway and Jack Quilter, and later Seán, time and time again. Jordan Conway was in magnificient form, giving a real Captain Fantastic performance, his highfielding being particularly praiseworthy.

St Pats’ forward play looked very threatening with every attack and Brandon Boyle put the result beyond any real doubt with a well taken goal with 12 minutes remaining. But back came Beale again.

Again a break through the cover, again a ferocious shot destined for the net, and again, another ridiculous good save from Aidan. St Pats started to empty the bench with, Anthony Craig and Shane O’Donoghue (both of whom were very unlucky to not start) replacing Cillian O’Riordan and Brandon Boyle respectively.

Joe O’Connor came in for Brian Murphy, Eoin Greaney for Joe Quilter and Jack Lynch in for his brother Tommy. It was unfortunate that gametime couldn’t be given to every player, as all 23 togged out yesterday had played their part on the path to the final. With time almost up, Beale drove through again and this time not even Aidan in the game of his life couldn’t keep it out. In all fairness, it was probably no more than they deserved.

The full time whistle sparked great joy among the large Pats following. Captain Jordan Conway, who led by example throughout recieved the trophy on behalf of the team. In a nice touch of sportmanship, he offered good wishes to the missing Beale player Cormac Linehan, who suffered a season ending injury playing for the Kery minors. Aidan O’Haloran was named Man of the Match for his heroics.

While the County League trophy is safely stored away for the year, the minors are also in the final of the Central League. The Double beckons! Well done to this fantastic group of men who have been a credit to themselves, their families and our club all year long. Naomh Pádraig abú!

Panel on the Day: Aidan O’Halloran, Kieran Dwyer, Killian Quirke, Brian Murphy, Seán Dowling, Cillian O’Riordan, Jack Quilter, Jordan Conway, Tommy Lynch, Brandon Boyle, Cian Ronan, Gearóid Dillane, Joe Quilter, Seán Hogan, Anthony Craig, Shane O’Donoghue, Jack Lynch, Eoin Greaney, Shane Jordan, Mikey Cahill, Eoghan Murphy, Adam Boyle, Josh Laucher

Absent but not forgotten: Kyle Bustard, Alex Walsh, Míchéal Murphy

Management team: Eoin Sayers, Luke Mulligan, John Fitzgerald

Garvey’s Super Valu Senior Football Championship Quarter Final Kerins O’Rahillys 1-15 Killarney Legion 4-09

They say goals win matches and this was certainly the case on Saturday evening last when we bowed out of the championship with a James O’Donoghue inspired Legion march on to the semi final.

James O’Donoghue caused havoc in the Kerins O’Rahillys defence and with his goals it gave them the platform to see out the game. We responded well after these goals and only a point separated the teams at the 17th minute but the third goal gave them another fillip before half time and they always threatened in the attack.

Jack Savage had our first point in the second minute. Just before this with 30 seconds gone Gary Kissane brought off a brilliant save to deny O’Donoghue a certain goal. But they hit the net in the 4th minute to put them ahead.

We responded well with another point from Jack Savage who had an excellent game throughout and when Barry John Keane was brought down in the square it was expertly put away by David Moran to put us ahead by 1-02 to Legions 1-01.

Then disaster in the 10th minute with Legions 2nd goal. We replied with points by Barry John Keane, Tommy Walsh, and Jack Savage to leave the score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-05 to Legions 2-03 at the 17th minute then another goal by Legion to put them ahead.

We fought back with points from David McLoughlin, and 2 Jack Savage points to leave the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08 to Legions 3-04. We were only a point adrift in the first quarter of the second half with David Moran and Tommy Walsh dominating the middle and good support play from Con Barrett, Danny O’Sullivan, and Kieran O’Mahony.

Points by Jack Savage from frees and a Kieran O’Mahony point from play left the score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-11 to Legions 3-07 at the 45th minute and it was anyone’s game, but pressure from Legion resulted in a penalty and O’Donoghue to put away for Legions fourth goal.

Though we battled hard for an equaliser and we had points from Tommy Walsh, John O’Connor and Jack Savage Legion held on for a deserved win.

Next game is Tralee Town Board Championship final. This will be played in Ballymac on Sunday the 18th of October at 3.30 and is against Austin Stacks.

Note – All fixtures are subject to change. Changes will be posted on Facebook and Twitter.

SIOBHAN COTTER BLITZ

The Siobhan Cotter Memorial Blitz took place on Sunday the 11th of October in Churchill. The blitz saw our under 7, 8, 9, and 10 panels playing on the day. Our opponents on the day were Churchill, Ardfert, and Austin Stacks.

Our U10’s began with a superb win over Austin Stacks however we went down to a better Churchill team in our second game.  In our final group game against Ardfert our lads put in another sterling performance to record a brilliant victory.  Panel : T Palmer, J O Connor, M Culloty, A Horgan, P Heffernan, D Galvin, S Rice, N Collins, M Prendergast, R Lowe, E O Brien, J Orgonbagor.

Our U 9’s had three tough games coming up short against Austin Stacks and Churchill but we saved our best football until last with an excellent victory over Ardfert.  Panel : C Martin, S Gilroy, W O Donoghue, A Riordan, J Burke, M Savage, K Lynch, J Slattery, D Lucid, C White, T Leen, T Long.

A great days football was enjoyed by our under 7 & 8 footballers . Best on the day were Michael Quirke, Paddy Lucid, Padraig Reidy, Mairtin Mc Kivergan, Matthew Rodgers, and Luke Griffin.

At the end of the tournament we were level on points with Austin Stacks which necessitated a play off which saw a joint U8 and U9 team from both clubs play each other.  The town side proved stronger in this game and this result saw Austin Stack receive the Siobhan Cotter Cup.  Many thanks to the Churchill Club for their invitation to the Blitz and the hospitality extended to us on the day.

There will be no academy for the Ballymac under 8 and 10 boys next weekend. The last academy of the year for this group will take place on Sunday the 25th of October in Ballymac at 11am. Well done to all on a great year.

CAILINI FAOI 15

Ballymac 2 – 5   Beaufort 2 – 3
Our U15 team played in the last competition of the year Sat evening last and secured a final spot . This was a good display from the team who have actually played U16 this year despite all being underage next year again and it was a win that was deserved .
Goals in either half from Aine Rice and Mary Healy helped us on our way , both teams defenses were quite strong on the night . We led at half time by 1- 2 to  0-2 our 2 points coming from Rachel Godley and Aine Rice . We pulled away to lead by 2-5 to 0-2 with 10mins remaining with points from Micheala Murphy , Mary Healy and Elle Mc Elligott .
2 late goals for Beaufort and a point from a free finished the scoring .
We await the winners of Spa/Abbeydorney .

Team : Robyn White , Roisin O Connell , Tara Murphy , Aisling O Connell , Niamh Rahilly , Caoimhe Carroll , Rose Anne O Shea , Therese Keane , Aine Rice , Rachel Godley , Leah O Neill , Elle Mc Elligott , Mary Healy , Micheala Murphy . Sub : Cait Rice

CAILINI FAOI 14

Following the recent Co League win we’ve had a couple of weeks off prior to the beginning of the North Kerry . Having played and defeated  Ballyduff and Na Gaeil at home in the first  2 games , we’d 2 games this week to finish off our year . Both games produced wonderful high scoring games in which we came out the right side of to cap off a fabulous year for this group of girls . We have completed the double as the girls have annexed the North Kerry League Div 2 title .

Ballymac 2-18   Listowel 4-7

Sunday 4th we travelled to Listowel to play the locals in round 4 .

This was a cracker with both teams going for the jugular . Despite playing very well in the first half we went in at half time on level terms . We seemed to get punished heavily for small mistakes made . However in the 2nd half our girls eliminated those mistakes and our superior fitness was telling . Robin was very good in goals , Niamh had a storming 2nd half and along with Eve and Maeve put up the shutters at the back .

Aisling and Therese played very well against 2 very good opponents , our forwards were exceptional on the night Elle Mc Elligott , Catriona Sommers and Cora Savage did most of the damage on the scoreboard but the half forward line of Aine and Cait Rice and Lisa Curran’s high workrate ensured good supply of ball and quality passing . Sinead suffered a hand injury and we wish her a speedy recovery

Team & scorers
Robyn White , Eve Creedon , Niamh Rahilly , Sinead Mc Keown , Roisin Long ,Caoimhe Carroll ,Maeve O Sullivan , Aisling O Connell 1-0 , Therese Keane , Cait Rice , Aine Rice 1-1, Lisa Curran 0-1 , Catriona Sommer 0-6 , Elle Mc Elligott 0-5 , Cora Savage 0-5 . Sub Kate O Connor for Sinead

Ballymac 5-9  John Mitchels 3-9
Thursday 8th Oct we made the short trip to neighbours John Mitchels
Another shootout and we again go home by 2 goals to clinch the North Kerry Div 2 title . John Mitchels played very well with  Eva Buckley and Rachel Kilgallon causing us all sort of problems in the first half with their strong running and accurate kicking .

Elle Mc Elligott kicked  2-3 in this period and Catriona Sommers got 1-1 . We regrouped at halftime , made a few substitutions and positional changes and the  applied  themselves much better in the 2nd half . Goals from Catriona Sommers and Cora Savage were important but the main difference on the night were 3 very good saves from Robyn . On each occasion she was brave and stood big to deny the Mitchels forward . Aisling  and Therese came good in the 2nd half too as did Roisin Long , Maeve O Sullivan & Caoimhe Carroll . Subs Cora Savage , Emily O Donoghue , Cathy Palmer , Elle Linehan and Jade Riordan all contributed on the night .  We celebrated Cait Rice’s 13th birthday afterwards who also Captain’d the team on the night .

Team & Scorers
Robyn White , Eve Creedon , Niamh Rahilly , Sophie O Donoghue , Roisin Long ,Caoimhe Carroll ,Maeve O Sullivan , Aisling O Connell 0-2 , Therese Keane , Cait Rice , Aine Rice 0-2 , Lisa Curran , Catriona Sommer 2-1 , Elle Mc Elligott 2-4 , Elle Sugrue. Subs Emily O Donoghue , Cora Savage 1-0 , Cathy Palmer , Elle Linehan & Jade Riordan .

These are a special bunch of young ladies , a pleasure to coach & committed to the club . They’re fantastic ambassadors for the club too , each game they turn out impeccably with matching shorts and togs and their conduct on the field is first class too . What they achieved this year is well deserved and they definitely reflect the saying ‘ the more I work and practice  , the luckier I get  ”

Well done again girls and thanks to parents and supporters  for encouragement and support during the year 2015 .

Man Who Died In Fenit Fire Was Much-Loved Retired Priest

Screen Shot 2015-10-12 at 12.50.42
Fr. Gearoid O’Donnchadha who died in a fire in Fenit in the early hours of the morning.

THERE is a sense of shock in Fenit at the death of Fr. Gearoid Ó Donnchadha in a fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

The well-known an much-loved man was a huge figure in the Fenit community, actively promoting many projects in Fenit and beyond, including the statue of St Brendan the Navigator.

Fr Gearoid was born in Cork City in 1933 and grew up in Killarney.

In 1950 he entered Maynooth College Co. Kildare and was ordained a priest of the Kerry Diocese in June 1957.

He served in Manchester, Rathmore, Sneem and Birmingham. He served briefly in Tralee and Castlegregory. He taught in St. Brendan’s Killarney and St. Colman’s Newry between 1964 and 1967.

In 1967 he began a two year teaching stint in Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, New York while attending Fordham University where he received MA and PhD degrees in Sociology.

Between 1969 and 1971 he taught in Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY, and in City College NY. In 1971 he began teaching in Hartwick College, Oneonta, in Upstate New York. In 1980 he began teaching in Tralee Regional Technical College ( later, ITT, Institute of Technology, Tralee). He retired in 1998.

In a statement issued this morning, Sinn Féin Deputy Martin Ferris has expressed his sympathy on the death of the popular retired priest.

“The parish of Fenit and the wider community are horrified at the tragic death of Fr. O’Donnchada this morning. Fr. O’Donnchada served his parish faithfully for many years and he had a deep affection for Fenit and its people,” said Deputy Ferris.

“This affection was reciprocated by the people of the area towards him. He was involved in many projects in the area over the years, none so much as the St. Brendan the Navigator statue on Samphire Island at Fenit pier which he spearheaded and will forever be connected with him.”

“His historical knowledge will be impossible to replace and to his family and many friends I express my deepest sympathy. His passing has left a deep void and sense of bewilderment in the area which has suffered many tragedies over the years, people like Fr. O’Donnchada were always there to help in these situations and I know the parish of Fenit will rally around to help his family at this terrible time. Ar dheis Dé a raibh a anam dílis,” said Deputy Ferris.

New Community Responders Scheme To Be Set Up In Tralee

Aidan Kelly new insert 1

Tralee Community Responders
Tralee will benefit from a new ‘Community Responders Scheme’.

TRALEE is to get a new ‘Community Responder Scheme’ (CFR) to assist the Ambulance Service in various life threatening emergencies.

The scheme will be made up entirely of volunteers living or working within the coverage area who will be on a roster system. The scheme will be reliant entirely on public support and business sponsorship and it is estimated that the scheme will require €8,000 in order to ‘go live’.

The scheme will be linked to, and under the control of, the National Ambulance Service, who are supporting
the scheme for Tralee.

.

Emergency calls for the scheme will be sent by ambulance control to the pagers of the responders on call. The scheme will attend calls for choking, stroke, chest pain and cardiac arrest within the 6km radius which is centered at the railway flyover on the Tralee Bypass.

The scheme will be managed on a local level by Scheme Coordinator Sean Horgan who also set-up and
continues to run the Ardfert & District Community First Responders which went live on 23rd February this year
and had attended 27 emergency calls as at 9th October.

“We are lucky enough in Tralee to have an ambulance station but the crews have a very large coverage area spanning from Kerry Head to Knocknagoshel. So what we intend to do, like the 120+ CFR schemes nationwide, is assist the National Ambulance Service where possible to ensure that assistance is given to persons choking, experiencing chest pain, a stroke or cardiac arrest,” said Sean Horgan, commenting on the setting up of the group.

Businesses and locals are asked to pledge their support to the CFR scheme in order to get it up and running.

“CFR schemes are worth their weight in gold and do tremendous work around Ireland. In times where ambulances are on other calls, you can still rest assured that a trained Community Responder is on their way to you. Taking Ardfert as an example, the members have assisted in many calls since going live and have genuinely made a difference and it would be great to follow suit in Tralee like other schemes in Kerry have – such as Ardfert, Killarney, Ballybunion, Sneem, Beale, Asdee and more,” Sean continued.

The responders will be local persons living or available within the 6km coverage area when on call. They will carry with them a kit bag containing all necessary supplies and a defibrillator when on call.

Full training will be provided and the only other requirements are that you are over 18, have a full driving licence, can pass a Garda vetting check, have access to an insured vehicle when on call and are not on call for any other
organisation whilst on call for the Tralee Community Responders.

The Tralee Community Responders website can be found HERE . A Facebook page for the group can be found HERE as well.

You will also be able to get in touch by e-mailing traleeresponders@gmail.com.

A public meeting will be held in a few weeks for those persons interested in getting involved.

REPORTS ;
(U13) Div 1;
Park B 5-3 Killarney Celtic B ,
It was a dry day with no wind for the second league game in division 1 under 13s between Park B and Killarney Celtic B. The game got under way at 12.15 with Park attacking and making some fine moves, one in particular which looked like it could lead to the opening goal but it was deemed to be offside. After 5 minutes or so a high ball down field by Killarney which bounced in front of Parks central defender saw an effort on goal, in the confusion that followed Parks defender put the ball in his own net making it 0-1. Shortly after that, following another attack by Killarney a mix up between Parks defender and keeper saw Killarney make it 0-2. Park continued to play well with some lovely movements down the right wing, Evan Foley linking up with Adam Walker who sent David (Tiny) Callaghan on an attack and as he approached the penalty area he let fly with a beautiful shot which hit the back of the net. 1-2 at half time.
After a team talk at half time Park got down to business in the second half dominating play and with some excellent midfield play the ball came out to the left wing where Matt Healy took it up and made his way on goal, with everyone expecting him to have a shot as he closed in on goal he unselfishly passed it to Tiny who stuck it in the back of the net for his and Parks second. Park now in command all over the field made it look easy as they played forward and a lovely cross from the left side found the head of Danny Jeffers who put it away to make it 3-2. Minutes later left winger Danny Fisher running in on goal had a shot and made it 4-2. With 10 minutes to go a goal by Killarney which looked well offside was allowed making it 4-3. There was a tense but exciting 10 minutes to go, Park attacking, Killarney attacking. Parks defence were excellent blocking all shots by Killarney reminiscent of the Republic of Ireland defence against Germany. With a minute left, the ball was played in to the Killarney area and Tiny was waiting there to score his hat trick which he did. Final score 5-3. Well done to Park.

TWO Kerry minors paid a quick visit to their old alma mater this week with a few trophies in hand of course, to the obvious delight of staff and pupils.

Footballer Mícheál Reidy and hurler Tomás O’Connor stopped off in their former stomping ground of O’Brennan NS in Kielduff with the All-Ireland trophies they won in their respective sports in the past couple of months.

The two talented sportsmen happily posed for photos with the staff and pupils while allowing students to eagerly examine the trophies.

With the abundance of sporting talent in schools throughout Kerry, it mightn’t be too long before we see some of these pupils returning with those trophies some day.

Guide To Surviving Today’s Super Sunday Of Sport In The Pub

Kerry ETB Surf new Insert
.

Sports beerTODAY is arguably the biggest day in years for Irish sports fans, with the rugby and soccer teams playing vital games.

Many of you will be heading down town on Sunday afternoon to sample the atmosphere in the pubs showing the matches on the big screen.

It’ll be a long evening, so here’s our tips on how to get through it…

1. Get there early

Yeah, I know. Pubs normally try the ploy of advertising a game for 5pm when the kick-off is an hour later, but they’re really only concerned about your punctuality.

This time though, pay attention. Seats will be scarce in the popular pubs, so get down at around 4.15pm at the latest, for the rugby kickoff, leaving half an hour to listen to whoever the TV3 crowd have on the panel.

Dublin Coach Insert 1
.

2. Avoid the rugby bellower

“HEAVE!” “THAT WAS FORWARD!” “IT WAS OUT ON THE FULL REF!”

There’s fan atmosphere and there’s the plague.

Funnily enough, it’ll be the guy who developed an interest in rugby at the age of 35 back in 2006 when Munster won the Heineken Cup, who’ll be the most vociferous in the pub.

Just slide that barstool 20 feet up the bar and you’ll be grand.

3. Get some soakage

Yeah, you may have had half a cow and 15 spuds for Sunday lunch at two o’clock, but now it’s 6.45pm, Ireland have beaten France by 10 points, you’re buzzin’ and it’s an hour to the soccer game.

The brain chants “Pints! Celebrate! Pints!” but common sense better kick in soon or you’ll be a face-down-on-the-bar-counter-drooling-mess by 10pm.

Snack-box time!

Continued below…

blasket insert new

4. Share your happiness with loved ones

If things are going really well, it’s good to make contact with loved ones to tell them how you feel and share your happiness on such an amazing occasion. Paul O’Connell’s twitter account is @Paul_OConnell

5. Pace yourself

Things can get tense during matches and you’ll be drinking deep in between plays, while the free, suspiciously extra-salty sausages and chips supplied by the bar at half-time, might encourage you to drink more than you would.

Take it easy, it’s a long night and you’ve work/college in the morning.

6. Resist your primal urges

As appealing as it may seem at the time, refrain from holding an impromptu scrum with the lads on Denny Street at 2am. Not a good look…in court.

7. Capture the moment

This one is for the people who have no interest in either game and have been dragged to the pub for the afternoon/night.

If Ireland are hanging on in both games in the closing stages, it might be fun to film the reactions of the crowd at the final whistle for posterity.

And then send them in to us here at TraleeToday.ie so we can show everyone!

KERRY primary school puils are being asked to submit ‘One Good Idea’ to combat climate change in a competition which could win their school a cash prize.

The ‘One Good Idea’ competition, was launched last week and Ardfert pupils were on hand to help give it some publicity.

They were one of the 2015 winners who designed a poster which will be displayed on bus shelters and Luas stops.

See them in the promo video below…

Run by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and sponsored by AIB, it encourages pupils to run energy awareness campaigns to change behaviour and improve energy efficiency in their homes, schools and communities.

Since it first launched in 2008, over 5,000 students have created energy saving campaigns which targeted almost 100,000 children, teenagers and adults throughout the country. Students are encouraged to research and plan their energy saving campaign; run the campaign in their home, school or community; then create a pitch video of their campaign; and if successful they will be chosen to take part in the national final which takes place in 2016.

Currently, a national public awareness campaign is being run using last year’s winners’ posters which are on display in AIB branches and billboards around the country.

The continued support from AIB will see each of the shortlisted teams receiving a cash prize to help their schools continue their commitment to reducing their energy use and combating climate change.

IT was a momentous day for Ardfert village on Friday when a significant portion of the Fair Green was transferred into the ownership of the local community council.

It came about thanks to a very generous gesture from Trevor Giles of Giles Auctioneers in Tralee, whose family has owned the land for the past 60 years after the owner, Talbot-Crosbie of Ardfert, asked Trevor’s father to take over the lands.

In March 2012, Sean Dineen approached the board of Ardfert Community Council Ltd. following a conversation he had with Trevor Giles, where Mr Giles expressed an interest in transferring lands held by him, particularly his portion of the Fair Green, to the community of Ardfert. (Kerry County Council owns the remaining portion of the Fair Green.)

A lot of work was carried out over the past three years by the Community Council’s solicitors (Pierse, McCarthy, Lucey), as well as the solicitors for KCC and Mr Giles, to complete this transfer.

The Voluntary Conveyance from Trevor Giles to Ardfert Community Council Ltd was completed in September 2015.  He transferred a portion of lands to Ardfert Community Council Ltd. and the balance to Kerry County Council.

“We are deeply grateful to Mr Giles for this generous and altruistic act.  It means that the people of Ardfert will forever into the future have a say in what happens to the Fair Green, located in the heart of our village,” read a statement from Ardfert Community Council.

Members of the board of Ardfert Community Council Ltd., staff members from Ardfert Community Centre, Trevor Giles and his son Daniel,  Sean Dineen, Katie McCarthy and  Niall Lucey were present for the transfer at Ardfert Community Centre on Friday.

As a gesture of their appreciation, the Community Council presented Trevor Giles with a beautiful painting of Ardfert Cathedral by artist Donal Stack at the transfer ceremony.

Mr Giles said he will supply two seats for the green area with plaques when the Community Council is ready to accept.

The Community Council has some ideas for the land, but will take their time on how to best use the land.

Roger Harty: The Power Of Acceptance

rsz_roger_hartyACCEPTANCE is one of the most powerful tools that you can have in your psychological welfare arsenal.

I discovered this many years ago and I regularly use phrases like ‘it is as it is’ or the infamous teenage phrase of ‘whatever’ much to the chagrin of my family and friends.

The Irish love to complain about the weather, but at the end of the day, complaining about the weather isn’t going to change the weather so one would be much better off accepting the weather as it is and investing in a decent raincoat and going out and enjoying oneself.

The song ‘Singing in the rain’ by Gene Kelly is a metaphor for accepting the situation as it is and enjoying the moment.

One must ask ‘why does acceptance work?’

To answer this, one must investigate the whole area of stress. Many people talk about stress or treat stress on a daily basis.

In fact there are billions of euros being spent on or lost to the economy around the world in the whole area of dealing with stress.

This is a problem in itself! Most people, if you asked them to define stress, would be unable to do so.

Again ‘What is stress?’ The best definition I have ever heard of stress from a ‘working’ point of view is Stress is ‘being Here and trying to be There’.

If that is true then surely the opposite is true. The secret to a stress-free life is being Here and not trying to be There.

It all comes back to living in the ‘NOW’. Acceptance of a situation is the one tool that will always render us in the ‘Now’.

It is easy to accept a situation when it is pleasant but may not be so easy if the situation is difficult. However it is in acceptance of a difficult situation that we come to realise the real power and benefit of acceptance.

Without doubt acceptance is always the better choice over the only other choice which is ‘non acceptance’. Non-acceptance of a situation will inevitably lead to some form of stress as we are ‘Being here and trying to be there’ as explained above.

At the end of the day there are three ways we should best react to any given situation;

1. Accept the situation as it is.

2. Change the situation (in other words take action and so something about it)

3. Accept that we are unable to change the situation (Note we always retain the power to change how we Think about the situation i.e How we React!)

Non Acceptance is never really a good option as it can result in much pain, stress and confusion for both an individual and a country.

Many great leaders have used the Power of Acceptance to great effect. Nelson Mandela brought about the Freedom of South Africa from the terrible regime of apartheid and he achieved it by accepting his situation in a prison cell.

Ghandi achieved the freedom of India by accepting that ‘non- violent’ means was the best way forward for India.

Jesus Christ used the symbol of ‘Acceptance of The Cross’ to spread the message of eternal love and to save the souls of mankind.

He died and gave His life without hesitation to teach this message. Millions of Christians around the world celebrate this message every Easter.

REPORT/PHOTOS: Kerins O’Rahillys Undone By Legion’s Scoring Power

Gavin O’Connor reports on Kerins O’Rahillys exit from the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry SFC at the hands of Killarney Legion on Saturday, plus loads of action photos below…

HELPED by a hat-trick from James O’Donoghue, Legion knocked Kerins O’Rahilly’s out of the county championship in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Despite a late rally by O’Rahilly’s where they scored four of the last five points, they couldn’t haul back Legion’s lead that had been stretched after O’Donoghue completed his hatrick from a spot kick with ten minutes left on the clock.

Strand Road who dominated midfield throughout will feel they left this one behind them, but when you have  a ruthless forward like O’Donoghue at the top of his game, there is little that can be done to stop him.

The early signs were not good with James O’Donoghue having to make Gary Kissane work in goal, saving a point blank shot straight from the throw-in.

The game was only three minutes old when O’Donoghue got on to a lovely long pass from wing back, Darragh Doherty, to rattle in his first of the afternoon.

Jack Savage replied with an exquisite point from 30 yards out which was followed by O’Rahillys penalty with seven minutes gone.

After Barry John Keane was tripped inside the penalty area, David Moran made no mistake, placing his shot to the right of the keeper.

Jamie O’Sullivan settled things for Legion with a point which was followed by the second Legion goal.

Conor Keane linked up for O’Donoghue’s second goal, the Kerry U21 threading a beautiful 30 yard pass to the Kerry star who skinned the Strand Road defence and caressed the ball past Kissane.

The game was real end to end stuff, with almost every attack being rewarded with a score. Tommy Walsh, who had caught a superb ball over his head in front of goal, was moved to midfield with Con Barrett taking up the full-forward spot.

O’Rahillys answered back with two points from Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh, to leave the scores 1-4 to 2-2 in favour of Legion after the first quarter.

The game was only 18 minutes old when Legion hit the net for a third. Once again, Keane and O’Donoghue, who was now unmark able, combined for the score.

Strand Road plugged away and got the last two scores of the half, both frees from Jack Savage to leave the scores 3-4 (13) to 1-8 (11).

It was clear something had to be done about O’Donoghue and the O’Rahillys line decided to stick with Cormac Coffey on the 2014 player of the year.

Though Coffey lessened O’Donoghue’s influence in the second half, the Blues were robbed of his dynamism going forward.

The second half was not as helter-skelter as the first. With Legion being wiped out in midfield by Walsh and Moran, who made some magnificent fetches, the Killarney side were forced to take short kick-outs to build their attacks.

In fact, between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, Legion went 17 minutes without troubling the score-board. With two Jack Savage frees inside the first seven minutes of the half, Strand Road drew level.

Legion replied with two points of their own from Billy McGuire and Kevin Breen. Making an instant impact off the bench for the blues was Kieran O’Mahony who made it a one point game once more.

Following a converted free from James O’Donoghue, which had been brought forward thirty yards because of dissent, Legion hit what was the fatal blow.

After O’Donoghue was fouled going into the square by Cian Sayers, he was awarded a penalty which mercilessly finished to the net.

With nine minutes left and five points down, there was still time for O’Rahillys to pull this one out of the fire.

Tommy Walsh was now moved back around the square and almost instantaneously this began to bear fruit from his aerial dominance, with two scores coming off him, one of them his own.

Despite pulling the game back to within two points with two minutes left, Strand Road had left this one too late.

When Legion substitute, Padraig Lucey, hit the final point the game, O’Rahilly’s, were forced to hit and hope into Walsh, but alas no chance came from their efforts.

So, for a second week in a row a Tralee team has been knocked out of the county championship. Legion will go in to tomorrow evenings draw and with JOD on top form they could well go all the way.

FOR the second week in a row, a Tralee team has been knocked out of the championship by a Killarney side.

Kerins O’Rahillys were on the receiving end of a first half blitz of goals from the Legion which ultimately proved the difference in Fitzgerald Stadium.

James O’Donoghue netted three times in all during the game which finished 4-9 to 1-15 and leaves no Tralee team in the final four of the competition.

A second-half penalty from the Kerry maestro put his side six points in front and despite coming back at them, Kerins O’Rahillys couldn’t make up the difference.

Tomorrow we’ll have a full match report with loads of action shots and Strand Road fans in the stands.

For now though, the Stacks and Strand Road sides face another mini-competition to save their senior status.

It’ll be a long winter.

ANOTHER representative of Tralee RFC will join the ranks of players from the club called up to the Ireland Women’s squad over the last few years.

Zoe Grattage, has travelled to Belfast to take part in an Ireland training session today (Saturday) to hopefully stake her claim for a place in the squad for the coming season.

She will follow in the footsteps of club-mates, Siobhan Fleming and Ciara Griffin, who have pulled on the green shirt.

A regular starter for Munster, Zoe’s preferred position is hooker.

Earlier this year, Ireland reached the semi-finals of the World Cup beating New Zealand on the way and capturing the imagination of the nation.

Coming up in November are two internationals against England and France, after that the focus will be on claiming back to back Six Nations titles.

Ciara Griffin will not take part in the training camp because of injury, but she is expected to be back before Christmas.

Tralee RFC started their season with a loss last week when they narrowly lost to Thurles on the road.

Niamh Geaney’s ‘Twin Strangers’ project has teamed up with the ‘Today Show’ on NBC to help find doppelgangers in the U.S.

A PROJECT started by Castleisland woman Niamh Geaney and her friends has reached one of the highest echelons of TV coverage after it recently teamed up with the hugely popular US TV programme, ‘The Today Show’ on NBC.

Niamh Geaney, Harry English and Terence Manzanga are the three friends behind the ‘Twin Strangers’ (TS) project that has now grown into something beyond what the friends could ever have expected.

The project gained widespread recognition when Niamh found her almost identical lookalike (see previous story here) and has now gone even further with this partnership.

They have teamed up with the immensely popular television programme, which is regularly viewed by close to 5 million people, in a bid to encourage more people in the US to sign up to the site, in the hope of finding more doppelgangers for people.

The popular US show started to sit up and take notice of the TS project when the group uploaded a video of the very first meeting between two doppelgangers in the US.

“We got a huge amount of media attention after the release of our first ever US meet up involving Ambra from North Carolina and Jennifer from Texas (see video here) The Today show got in touch off the back of that, wanting to do a meet-up live on the show in Rockefeller Plaza in New York and who could say no to that!” said Niamh Geaney when talking to TraleeToday.ie yesterday.

“They had been following my story until now so it’s amazing to see it grow and to think that now we have the chance to bring a few doppelgänger pairs together from around the US,” she continued.

“We want as many people as possible to have the chance to find their doppelgängers and the more people that are registered the more chance everybody has of finding an exact match,” Niamh said.

“Twin Strangers is hugely popular in America and all around the globe. Just this week I’ve seen new users from the likes of Mayotte, Bahrain and Belarus sign-up. It really is a global phenomenon and an incredible thing to witness.”

Did she expect the project to take off the way it has?

“No we most certainly did not. What began as three friends with a bet to see which one of us could find our doppelganger in 28 days, to become what it has become: we now have a website called twinstrangers.com with over half a million people registered from around the globe trying to find their doppelganger, it’s unbelievable!” she said.

Check out the video down below…

We were on NBC’s Today Show! We’re looking for US Doppelgängers to fly to New York and meet for the very first time! Thanks Today Show for getting the ball rolling, if you haven’t registered yet, sign up now on www.TwinStrangers.com.

Share this with your friends and family too and maybe they could meet their Doppelgängers!

MERCY MOUNTHAWK are getting set to host their huge fundraising activity this coming Sunday as they look to raise money for a state of the art extension to the school.

The ‘Monster Bingo’ fundraiser will take place in the school’s gym at 3pm where it is expected that there will be a good crowd in attendance for the third year of the popular event with €4,000 in prizes to be won.

All funds raised from the afternoon will go toward continuing the building of the new extension at the school, which includes new classrooms, canteen space and learning support rooms.

The school is hoping to have this ready at some point before Christmas, with classes to begin there in the new year.

With spot prizes and and generous jackpots on the night, it seems like this is going to be one event that is not to be missed.

Toddleathon
The ‘Inch By Inch Toddleathon’ will take place on Inch beach on October 18.

INCH BEACH is getting set to host a a very different type of activity later this month when the ‘Inch by Inch Toddleathon’ takes place to help raise funds for UNICEF Ireland.

It will be taking place at 1pm sharp at Inch Beach on October 18 and will cost €10 to enter.

The toddleathon event promises to be as adorable as it sounds with toddlers and their families getting ready to take part in a very mini-marathon (approximately one kilometre) in what promises to be an enjoyable day out for all.

Bouncy castles, face painting and sack races will be the order of the day (weather permitting of course) with all toddlers and children set to receive a finisher’s medal and their very own ‘mini-marathon’ completion certificate.

Parents and kids are being encouraged to wrap up well on the day.

If you would like to make an online donation to the event, then you can do so through the donation page HERE while organisers are also on the lookout for:

• Marshals to help guide on the day

• Marquees in case of bad weather

THE people at Kingdom Care held an information and coffee morning at their Tralee base on the Mart Grounds in Caherslee on Friday.

The event was to raise awareness of the services they offer to people in need and to showcase the clothes and goods on sale at the shop.

“It’s a gathering of staff members and volunteers and it’s gone down very well,” said Elizabeth Roche of Kingdom Care, who said donations have decreased over the past few months.

“It has got very quiet due to the refugee crisis and their need for donations and I think people are wearing their clothes for longer now. We’re asking people – as it’s coming up to Christmas – if they’re clearing out their attics to think of donating to us. We’re always looking for warm clothing, blankets and shoes – especially men’s and boys’ clothes.”

Donations can be made to the shop from Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 4pm.

A TRALEE school is celebrating after benefitting from the latest ‘Sports Capital Programme’ grants allocation.

The Clash-based Coláiste Gleann Lí post-primary school received €90,000  and means that it is the only school-based application in the entire country to receive a grant.

This new influx of money will now be used by the school to help build a new changing room and other facilities at the onsite astro turf pitch.

The staff and management at the school were understandably delighted at the news which they felt complimented the image of the school as one that was ‘on the rise’ in the town.

“This fantastic news is timely as it will compliment our extension which is through the planning process and moving to the building phase shortly; with estimated completion date for next September. This new extension will include additional classrooms, a new engineering facility and a creative arts, media and library space in order to cater for the recent surge in enrolments,” said Principal Richard Lawlor.

“This welcome announcement will ensure that our fabulous on-site astro turf facility is fully maximised by the school and our community partners,” he continued.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone that played a part in making this happen; in particular our community partners and the Management and staff of Kerry Education and Training Board,” he finished.

The Assistant Principal, Maryanne Slattery expressed her delight as well at the money received.

“We will be delighted to show our sports capital and extension plans along with our state-of-the-art astro turf facility to members of the public, at our Open Day next Saturday, October 17th, from 10am to 1pm,” she said.
