SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Kerins O’Rahillys 0-11; Austin Stacks 1-11.

Our Seniors had another very useful workout in Strand Road yesterday afternoon (13th March) but were pushed all the way by an under-strength O’Rahillys team in Round 4 (game no. 2) of this 4 Round Town League. Last week, in Round 1, we had a four points win against Mitchels. Three points separated the sides in this encounter.

After Fiachna Mangan opened the scoring in the 3rd minute Rahillys had a very good first quarter,  responding well with four consecutive points. Then, in the space of four minutes (16th to 20th) David Mannix leveled matters with three good scores (one from a free).

In the closing ten minutes of the half we had just one more score – a well worked move by team captain, Wayne Guthrie, who put over after a lovely exchange between himself and Pa McCarthy. This left the home side ahead by one at half time (0-6 to 0-5).

Seven minutes of the second half had elapsed before Shane Carroll opened the scoring with a nice point, and two minutes later Shane was on target again from a free.

Then in the 43rd minute came what turned out to be the game changer. Daniel Bohan, who was the architect of many set-ups throughout the game, put Fiachna Mangan through, and Fiachna’s shot across goal was flicked to the net by Shane O’Callaghan for the only goal of the game. From then to the end it was point for point by both sides – Rahillys with five to four by our lads – all ours from play – with Calla again on target (2) and one each by Wayne Guthrie and wing back, Jack O’Shea.

Team: Barry Galvin, Barry Walsh, Fearghal MacNamara, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea (0-1), Barry Shanahan, Denis McElligott, Wayne Guthrie (0-2), Shane Guthrie, Daniel Bohan, Michael O’Donnell, Fiachna Mangan (0-1), David Mannix (0-3 – one free) Shane O’Callaghan (1-2), Alan Nestor.

Subs used: Shane Carroll (19m) (0-2 – one free), Seán Ryan (37m), Darragh Long (41m), David O’Sullivan (44m).

Next Sunday in Lewis Road at 3pm (note the time change) we meet Dr. Crokes in round 1 of the Co. League and for the second year in a row this game will double up as the Co. League Final – this time the 2015 decider. Last year, in the 2014 Final, the game went to extra time which we won (2-9 to 0-13). We are chasing our 11th title while Crokes are seeking their 7th. At present we head the Roll of Honours with 10, Laune Rangers are on 9, Crokes on 6 and Kerins O’Rahillys with 5.  So best of luck to the whole squad on Sunday next.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Gneeveguilla 3-6; Austin Stacks 3-9.
For the second Saturday in a row our Minors served up a stunning display of brilliant football, this time away to Gneeveguilla, in round 3 (of 5) of the Co. League.

Playing with the aid of a strongish breeze in the first half, we led by a massive 12 points (3-6 to 0-3) at the break. But this was the typical game of two halves as, in the second period, the home side turned the tables when they outscored us by 3-3 to 0-3.

Injuries prevented Fergal Ryan and Harry O’Callaghan from starting but all were glad to see Brandon Patterson back in action again. And we got off to the perfect start when Conor Lowe, a late replacement for Harry, was at the end of a sweeping move in the 3rd minute,to lash to the net for a great goal. Five points followed with Ferdia O’Brien (3) and Donagh McKivergan (2) on target. Ferdia’s second point, in the 10th minute, came from a brilliant run from his own defence by Shane Kelliher.

Then in the 20th minute Ferdia, on the edge of the square, fielded beautifully from a perfect high ball from David Fitzmaurice, turned and shot low to the net. Then in the 27th minute Conor Lowe was fouled and Ferdia pointed the resultant free and then a minute later Cian Liston provided the perfect pass for Ferdia to net his second and our third of the half.

Two of Gneeveguilla’s first half points came from frees (in the 7th and 30th minutes) with their only score from play coming  in the 22nd minute.

However, it was a different kettle of fish in the second half as the East Kerry boys showed that they are not in Division 1 of the Co. League for nothing. All our three second half points came in the first 16 minutes – two of these from Ferdia (one a free) and the third from Cian Liston.

Overall another great display from our lads, with all 17 playing superbly. If one had to pick out two players who would have shaded it for Men of the Match it would be hard to overlook Ferdia (who scored 2-6, all but two from play) and defender Ciaran O’Reilly, whose burst out of defence in the closing seconds ensuring all two points for us. And another contributor to those two points was goalkeeper Robbie Murphy whose point-blank save in the 25th minute of the first half was stunning. From close range the home forward shot to the far post but Robbie, diving to his right, touched it out for a forty five.

Another stat to of importance was that during the whole hour we registered just one wide, and that was in our very first attack in the 2nd minute. And finally all but four of the 17 who lined out will be Minors again next year  and two of these (Dylan Casey and Gearóid Fitzgerald, who made his Minor debut in this game) will be Minors again in 2018.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Shane Kelliher, Dylan Casey, Tomás Sheehy, Pádraig Looney, Ciarán O’Reilly, Brandon Patterson, Philip Quilter, David Fitzmaurice, Conor Lowe (1-0), Michael Linnane, Odhran Liston, Cian Liston (0-1), Ferdia O’Brien (2-6 – 2 frees), Donagh McKivergan (0-2 – one free)
Subs used: Shane Walsh (48m), Gearóid Fitzgerald (58m).

Our remaining two games in the group stage of the Co. League are both at home  – against Kerins O’Rahillys (on Easter Saturday, 26th March) and Dr. Crokes on the following Friday (1st April).

BEST OF LUCK:

After their narrow victory last week against Tipperary, in the opening round of the Munster Championship the Kerry U21 Footballers, including our own Greg Horan, are back in action again on this Wednesday evening (16th March) in the semi final of the competition. Síle Reidy from Ballymac.

A BALLYMAC woman has been crowned as Luxembourg’s 15th Rose at their Rose Ball, which took place on Saturday, March 12. She will now go on to represent the country at the 2016 Rose of Tralee Festival from August 17-23.

Twenty year old Síle Reidy, originally from the Kielduff area, studies Business with Accounting and Finance at the University of Limerick, but currently works at Credit Suisse in Luxembourg. She was chosen from five contestants as she wowed the judges with her charm and charisma during interviews.

Síle, who has attended the Rose of Tralee parade every year in the past, will return in the summer, this time as one of 69 women competing in the International Rose final.

Despite living away from her home, she doesn’t feel homesick thanks to the strong Irish community within the country. Only once has a Luxembourg Rose won, back in 2012, but she relishes the chance to represent them and put them on the map as living in the country has lived up to her expectations.

MINORS – CO LEAGUE:

We got our Co League campaign off to a good start on Saturday last March 5th with a win at home to Castleisland Desmonds on a score of 2-8 to 0-7. We played with a very strong wind in the opening half but it took us a while to settle and after 20 minutes we were only leading by 2 points to 1.

However it was in the final 10 minutes of this half that we played our best football and a goal from Mikey Walsh was quickly followed by another from Pat Kearney. A fine individual point from Jack Myers saw us leading by 2-3 to 0-2 at half time.

We managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the 2nd half with good points from Conor Hurley, Mikey Walsh, Darcy O’Sullivan and Michael Kelliher. Desmonds dominated the final 10 minutes of the game and had several goal chances including a penalty but our goalkeeper Dylan O Shea produced a string of fantastic saves in a Man of the Match display.

Team:

Dylan O’Shea, Eoin Barden, Darren Daly, Aaron Pitman, Mark Ryle, Pat Kearney, Ryan Ward, Conor Hurley , Jack Myers, Ger Tobin, Mikey Walsh, Darcy O’ Sullivan, Joe Griffin , Michael Kelliher, Owen Breen, Darrion Hurley

John Mitchels 1-08 Tarbert/Moyvane 4-10

We suffered our first defeat of the season against a more physically stronger Tarbert/Moyvane selection last Saturday away in Moyvane. We started brightly but failed to convert any potential scores. Moyvane/Tarbert dominated for the next 10 minutes and converted 1-03 without reply.

We fought hard and came back into the game with 4 unanswered scores from Michael Kelleher and Eoin Breen. Tarbert/Moyvane performed better for the remainder of the half leaving the half time score Moyvane/Tarbert 2-07 John Mitchels 0-05.

There was definitely more purpose to the Mitchels performance at the start of the second half courageously led by Pat Kearney, Darran Daly and Ryan Ward. The whole Mitchels team in general played with great heart and never gave up which is a good sign for future games. Mikey Kelleher, Gary Howard and Mikey Walsh added points with Eoin Breen scoring the goal. Moyvane/Tarbert scored two late goals to flatter the scoreline somewhat.

It was a tough physical game for the Mitchels team but lessons were learned and hopefully we will learn and grow as a team. Special thanks to all our supporters who travelled to the game.

SATURDAY was a marvellous day for runners with the Tralee International Marathon taking place.

Around 800 took part in the full and half marathon races, sponsored by Kerry’s Eye, which brought a nice economic boost to the town with many people coming down and staying overnight.

The finish line in the town park was the scene of much joy as the runners came home to be congratulated by family and friends.

Here’s some more images from the day…

MINORS:

CHURCHILL 3-08   BALLYMAC 4-09

Played on a very fast pitch in Churchill this was a thirteen a side game as our opponents had not enough players. Again we were guilty of not taking point chances and were 2 points to no score down after 12 minutes. David Long was fouled and Darragh Regan pointed from the free.

Tomás O Connor pointed from Robert O Dowds pass. Tomás again pointed when Robert was fouled. Michael Hoare goaled from David Long pass and Robert pointed again from David’s pass.Churchill pointed while Tomas and Darragh Regan pointed for us. Michael Hoare put Tomás through for a fine goal while Churchill got the final point of the half to leave the half time score Ballymac 2-06 Churchill 0-04.

On the resumption Churchill got two points with Michael Hoare pointing for us. Our opponents then took over and scored 2-02 without reply inside the next ten minutes.Sustained Ballymac pressure led to a  goal from Eoin OMalley. Tomás again pointed while at the other end Churchill got through for a goal.

Once again Tomás worked his way through for a point and James Mc Donnell sealed the win with a late goal. Micheál Reidy, Keelan Brosnan and Eddie Rogers worked hard and our subs made a valuable contribution on a day when we did not make life easy for ourselves.

TEAM & SCORERS; Barry Lyons, Eddie Rogers, Max O Brien,Kevin O Connor, Micheál Reidy, Eoin O Malley (1-0), David Long, Keelan Brosnan, Michael Hoare(1-1), Darragh Regan (0-2,) Liam O Malley, Tomás O Connor (1-5), Robert O Dowd (0-1), SUBS; Chris Lowe, Joshua O Keeffe, James MC Donnell (1-0), Tadgh Brick.

Tomas is also part of the Kerry Minor Hurling team.   Maria Quirke is now  a well established member of the Kerry Ladies Senior Football squad while Ashling O Connell is on the Kerry U14 Football panel for the forthcoming Munster Championship game against Cork to be played this weekend.   The progress of all these players to inter Co. Level is a testament to the hard work being put in at underage level within the Club.

SCOR NA BPAISTI

The Castleisland district final of Scor na bpaisti took place on Sunday evening in Knocknagoshel. Ballymac were very well represented in most catagories. The club had 3 winners on the night. Ella Quirke won the recitation with a brilliant version of “Dancing round me Handbag”. The figure dancers, Abbey Leahy, Alice Brosnan, Laura Kelly, Emma Daly, Ella and Maggie Scanlon, Ri-Ann Zyang and Ella Quirke danced beautifully to claim the title.

Our Leiriu group were magnificent with their version of events that happened in 1916. In a very moving piece written by Maurice O Connell there were very few dry eyes in the house! The cast of Micheal and Conal Savage, Emma and Thomas Leen, Jared O Bhriain, Eimear Curran, Jamie Sugrue and Tom Long preformed exceptionally well on the night.

All three acts now go forward to the County Semi Final on Sunday 10th April at the Tintean theatre in Ballybunion.
Ballymac GAA club also won the best club award on the night.  Many thanks to all the boys and girls that represented the club so well on the night and to everyone who helped prepare the kids for the show.

Juvenile Academy

U6’s: It was great to see another huge turnout at training last Sunday morning with Chloe Passway, Tommy and Hugh Costello and James Daly showing great skill and determination. A huge well done to Ryan Fitzgerald who won our footballer of the week cup impressing his coaches with his football skills. Keep up the good work!

U8’s: Peileadoir na Seachtaine was awarded to Jack Costello who trained very well. The climbing frame was a source of great fun and games for all. Mark Vansteenkiste, Stephen Murphy, Ben and Sam Jones caught the eye in the skills demos.

U10’s: The  St. Pats under 10’s  Boys & Girls were in academy action last Sunday. We had a brilliant turnout for our first outing of the year on our astro turf. The coaches were delighted with the great effort everyone gave during the session with Orlaith Murphy, Diarmuid Waugh, Caitlinn O’Grady and Mark O’Brien giving it their all during the session.

Congratulations to Daniel Sheehy on winning footballer of the week trophy. It is important that ye all keep practicing at home during the week. We will be training on the Astro pitch at home in Blennerville again this Sunday. We will contact ye during the week to confirm same so we hope to see ye all there.

U12’s: Training continues on Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on our astro turf.

U14’s: First game of the St Brendan’s League got off to a flying start for St Pats who travelled with only 13 players as there were a few players away for the weekend.

It was a great display by our boys from beginning to end who ran out winners by four points in the end. Gavin “Mr. Consistent” Doody played his usual steady game making some great saves and his kick outs were spot on everytime.
Our back line of Niall McCathy, Micheal Doody, Colin Doody, Samuel Abubaker and Liam O’Sullivan all showed great heart throughout the game.

Niall had a stormer producing block after block and at times he could be confused for Marc O’Se with some of the blocks he made. The brothers of Liam and Micheal linked up well throughout and showed great heart in defending ball after ball. Colin Doody who was playing out of position today proved how versatile he is clearing ball after ball. samuel made some strong tackles and made some great runs up the field.

Our midfield pairing of Jamie O’Brien and Darragh Moriarty both played a stormer and steadied the ship time after time and both covered ground all over the field, scoring some some excellent scores in the process. Our forward line of Aaron Murphy, Danny Greaney, Tomas O’Sullivan, Nathan Moriarty and Tadgh Kerins all played very well with Danny and Tomas kicking some huge scores from long distances and linking up well to set up Tadgh for a great goal. Aaron also played very well on the wing and made some vital blocks at crucial times.

Nathan worked hard in full forward knocking down some balls to set up some great scores. Final score was Ardfert 2-11 St.Pats 4-09. All in all, it was a fantastic display considering that it was the first game of the season and the year surely looks bright for this very energetic team who have heart by the bucket. Well done guys!!!

Team: Gavin Doody, Niall McCarthy(2-0), Michael Doody, Colin Doody, Samuel Abubaker, Liam O’ Sullivan, Jamie O’Brien (1-1), Darragh Moriarty(0-2), Aaron Murphy, Danny Greaney (0-2), Tomas O’Sullivan (0-4), Nathan Moriarty, Tadgh Kerins (1-0).

U16’s: Training continues on Friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on our astro turf.

Girls: Outdoor training to resume as soon as the weather improves.

Seniors

Played under floodlights in a rescheduled St. Brendans Round one League match Thursday last versus Ardfert, St.Pats gave a reassure perfomance which will stand to them when the County League starts later this month despite missing a few key players. Brendan Poff opened the scoring in the second minute with a well taken point followed by a goal the nest minute coming off the boots of Liam O’Sullivan.

The conditions of the pitch wasn’t ideal but the referee cleverly allowed play flow a lot better which resulted in a number of exchanged points between both teams with St.Pats coming off the better side at the end of the first half with scores at 1-8 to 0-9.

On resumption of the second half, St.Pats stamped their authority on the game with four points from Kieran Hurley of which two were frees and a well taken point from Sean Dowling, who carried the ball a good distance before slotting it over the bar. In the end, St.Pats had a comfortable win on a final scoreline of 1-13 to 0-9.

The seniors commence the County League this Sunday where they play hosts to Beale in Blennerville at 2pm. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Minors

Our minors played Fossa last Saturday in the County Minor League in Blennerville. It was a good workmanlike performance on a very heavy pitch that didn’t reward the free-flowing football our lads played but they controlled the game from start to finish with Shane O’Donoghue, Mikey Cahill, Kieran Dwyer, Joe Quilter and Eoin Greaney putting in great displays and ensuring we came out victorious with a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-5.

Registration

Registration forms have been distributed to all current members. These can be returned to any club officer or left in O’Shea’s Gala Shop. There will also be forms available via team mentors and at the Academy on Sunday mornings.

The club would also ask as many people as possible to avail of the option to sign up for our annual Lotto subscription which funds the day to day running of the club. Family Membership and an annual Lotto subscription is available for €150.

IT was a long and rewarding day for hundreds of runners yesterday as they completed their full and half marathons in town.

The weather cleared up in the early morning to provide perfect conditions for the fit bunch of runners as they made their way around the route.

Marcus Howlett of Run The Kingdom was delighted with the Kerry’s Eye-sponsored event.

“We sold out the event We had about 300 for the full and between 450 and 500 for the half marathon. There was a lot of non-locals down as well so it’s great for the local economy. I was speaking to people in hotels who were saying they were booked out and even fruit and veg suppliers were saying they were getting extra orders over the weekend so it’s great for the town. We’ve four [marathons] down now so it’s on to year five,” said Marcus.

The runners finished up the routes running down Neil Armstrong Way in the Town Park and crossing the finish line near the Ashe Memorial Hall, to great cheers from fellow runners and spectators.

Louise Cotter, originally from St Brendan’s Park, of architects Carr, Cotter & Naessens Ltd, worked on the dlr LexIcon which received the Selwyn Goldsmith Award for International Design and the National Panel Special Award at the 2016 Civic Trust Awards in London on March 4.

CLASSES in national schools around the town have been busy recently creating business ideas as part of the the Junior Entrepreneur Programme.

Fifth and sixth classes at Holy Family and Tralee Educate Together were  home to making a few extra bob for their schools with their small enterprises.

Politicians, local and otherwise, along with GAA stars have contributed to a cookery book devised by Mr Liam Moloney’s fifth class in Holy Family.

The ‘Lets Make and Bake Cookbook’ devised by the group includes recipes from Kerry footballers, David Moran and Marc O’Se and Irish rugby international, Alan Quinlan.

Away from the sports field, interim Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, provided his favourite dish along with Michael Healy Rae, who gave a recipe for nettle soup.

In Tralee Educate Together, Rosie Duffy’s, fifth and sixth class designed a range of tie-dye pencil cases which they produced themselves from plain cases they sourced and ordered.

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme is a 10 – 16 week entrepreneurial education programme for primary school pupils. An awards ceremony is held every year in the spring, with schools from all over the county showing their projects. Scroll down for photos…

A Play Based On Countess Markievicz Is Coming To Tralee

Kerry ETB insert
.
Siamsa Barbara Dempsey
Barbara Dempsey as Countess Markievicz in the play.

HOT on the heels of its success in Dublin, the play, ‘Madame de Markievicz On Trial’, written by Ann Matthews and directed by Anthony Fox, will come to Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, on Saturday, April 16.

However, if you’re in Listowel next weekend, the play will be on in St John’s Theatre, Listowel on Friday, March 18.

Most people know the centenary of the 1916 Rebellion is being commemorated with events taking place all over the country. Most are familiar with the main characters such as Pearse and Connolly. Indeed, Kerry people travelling in and out of Heuston Station may have even spotted the bust of Sean Heuston, one of those who were executed after the Rising, but when it comes to the women who took part in the Rebellion, Madame Markievicz is the most well-known.

Actors Neil Fleming and Ian Mehan in a scene from the play.

A play never claims to be an accurate account of an historical event. A play, like a good teacher, makes one think about people, things and events, and certainly ‘Madame de Markievicz On Trial’  gives the audience an opportunity simply to ask themselves, who exactly is this Countess Markievicz?

The Countess was tried by court martial in the aftermath of the Rebellion but this drama is set in a criminal court and is a fictional calling to the account of the Countess for the death of police constable Michael Lahiff on Easter Monday, 1916.

It is led by a great team and cast under the guidance of The New Theatre. For more information, checkout their website. www.thenewtheatre.com.

THE training was completed, now all they had to do was run it!

Three hundred runners gathered at the Aqua Dome this morning for the start of the Kerry’s Eye Tralee International Marathon with everyone in good spirits for the gruelling 26 miles ahead.

The misty rain arrived just as they were starting off, but that would hardly faze these runners who faced far more challenging factors than a bit of moisture.

As I write this (11.35am), many runners are still on the course so best of luck to them. Scroll down for short video and many photos below…

A MARTIAL arts club in Tralee raised some much-needed funds at a table quiz in Kirby’s Brogue Inn on Thursday night.

The White Panthers club are based in Chutes Lane in Boherbee and they need to replace the flooring at the gym.

“We need to put down jigsaw flooring, as we have carpet at the moment but that’s not ideal for training,” said Steve O’Connor, founder of the club. “We also need to fundraise to send members to the World Pan Amateur & Pro-Fi Kickboxing Championships in Greece September,” said Steve.

The 30 members of the club range in age from four to 62 and many were present to test their general knowledge at the Rock Street venue on Thursday. To find out more about the club click here. Scroll down for photos…

AUDIENCES at Siamsa  are being treated to evenings of murder, mayhem and musical genius this weekend by the Light Opera Society of Tralee.

‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ opened on Thursday night to a great reception and tickets are still available for the last performance tonight (Saturday).

Set in 19th century England, the musical details the return of barber Sweeney Todd to London after 15 years of exile, in order to take revenge on the corrupt judge who banished him, by conspiring with a local baker, Mrs. Lovett, who is in desperate need of fresh meat for her pies.

Under the direction of Aidan O’Carroll, the cast is led Tralee man Alan McLoughlin as Sweeney and playing opposite him in the plum role of Mrs. Lovett is Grainne O’Carroll. Cormac Sertutxa from Castlemaine plays the romantic lead part of Anthony Hope opposite up-and-coming Tralee girl Tracey O’Keeffe.

Caitriona Fitzmaurice from Tarbert plays the trouser role of rival barber Adolfo Pirelli while Ian Dillane plays his hapless assistant Tobias Ragg. Well known Tralee professional actor Tim Landers is Judge Turpin while poet and actor Noel King plays Beadle while Kim Harrison plays the Beggar Woman – in reality Sweeney’s deranged wife.

The sets are designed by Aidan O’Carroll, lighting by professional designer Pious McCarthy, costumes by Eileen O’Connell and additional choreography by leading lady Grainne O’Carroll.

The specially enlarged orchestra under the direction of Listowel native, Kerry School of Music teacher Anna Connolly, draws its players from the School of Music with specialist musicians coming in from Cork and Dublin. Scroll down for photos from the opening night…

PREVIEW: Relegation-Battling Mayo To Halt Rejuvenated Kingdom

THESE two old rivals will face each other with recent history in the league firmly on the side of the men from the west.

Last week, Kerry came through what was dubbed the ‘Battle of Tralee’ against Donegal, while Mayo registered long overdue points on the road in Monaghan (1-12 2-11).

Mayo are still in dire need of a couple more wins to guarantee survival. A loss this Sunday will have them staring at the drop with two matches left in the campaign.

Continued below…

.

After last week’s firestorm in Austin Stack Park, Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s rejuvenated side are looking up instead of down. Kerry are now in with a real shout for a semi-final spot after two wins against Down (0-6 – 0-22) and Donegal (1-13 – 1-8).

New Mayo manager, Stephen Rochford, will once again be without the services of Cillian O’Connor and Keith Higgins. He will still have All-Stars Aidan O’Shea and Lee Keegan at his disposal.

Mayo were unlucky not to get anything out of games against Dublin (0-7 – 0-9) and Donegal (1-14 – 1-12). It looked like it was going to be a similar story in Monaghan when they lost Aidan O’Shea to a black card 10 minutes in, but they dug deep to earn two valuable points.

Kerry will be without Alan Fitzgerald who received a straight red last week for striking Neil McGee (you may have heard about this!). Killian Young, Tommy Walsh and David Moran are still recovering from knocks so will once again be unavailable.

However, the panel did receive a boost this week with the return of Mikey Geaney to full training following surgery on his back at the end of 2015, though this match may also come too soon for the Dingle man to feature.

Castlebar has not been a happy hunting ground for the Kingdom, who over a decade have only won twice at McHale Park.

In fact the recent National League record against Mayo makes for grim reading across the board. Since 2005, Kerry have played Mayo on 12 occasions, winning a paltry two times, drawing one and losing seven.

Unfortunately, I feel that trend will continue because the thought of relegation can put a real rocket underneath a side.

Lee Keegan spoke during the week saying “it’s all championship from here”, the graveness of the situation hitting home for the Westport native.

Will Kerry approach this like a championship match? Doubtful. Are Mayo too good go down? Yes.

Verdict – Mayo by 3

PRESENTATION girls showed their fashion designing skills on Friday to a former pupil who has gone on to make a name for herself in the industry.

The Transition Year Science group ‘Aims To Greener Fashion’ rolled out their focused campaign this week at the secondary school in Tralee as part of their SEAI One Good Idea project.

KFW Kerry Fashion Designer of the Year 2016, Greta Lelyte, a former pupil, came in to speak to the TY students as a group on her work in the fashion world, her designs and some information on the issue of Green fashion.

The girls have been busy researching the area of Greener fashion including the issue of air miles in relation to favourite outfits, attending an up-cycling workshop with Maria Elizabeth of the Lazy Elves on Monday, March 7, they held an up-cycling workshop for the TY class on Wednesday featuring tie-dying and beading, a swop-shop on Friday at lunch-time and a fashion display also on Friday to show students in the school some ideas re upcycling their clothes.

As part of the Love Lit dress-up day, the group presented a voucher to “Shaun the Sheep” who used a fab wool jumper and cap – natural fabric, which holds air for insulation  –  as the main part of her outfit.

The Kerry Senior Football Team to play Mayo in Round 5 of the Allianz Football League in McHale Park Castlebar on Sunday (2:30pm) shows three changes in personnel from the side that defeated Donegal on Sunday last.

Johnny Buckley comes in for Denis Daly in the half forward line and Colm Cooper returns from injury for his first start in the current league in place of the suspended Alan Fitzgerald.

TRALEE’S Bryan Cooper and Philip Enright shared some of their tips for the Cheltenham festival last night at a ‘Preview’ fundraiser for Blennerville school.

Racing fans present in Skelper Quane’s in the village, heard expert tips from the top jockeys and other well-known figures from the racing world such as photographer Pat Healy, bookmaker Berkie Browne, Limerick Racecouse manager Conor O’Neill and MC for the evening, Murt Murphy.

They were asked for their fancies for the major races at the festival next week as Bryan Cooper is set to be a busy man riding for Gigginstown. He is one of the favourites to be leading jockey at the Cotswolds festival and was keeping his cards close to his chest on whether he’ll plump for Don Cossack or Don Poli in the Gold Cup.

The event managed to raise over €600 for the school while some of the lads’ tips might earn a lot more if the bets are placed right! Scroll down for photos…

DONEGAL County Board will “definitely” appeal the €7,500 fine handed to both them and Kerry for the scenes that marred last weekend’s Allianz National League encounter in Austin Stack Park.

It is expected that the Kerry County Board will also appeal the hefty fine dished out by the CCCC on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Donegal Democrat newspaper, Donegal chairman Sean Dunnion made it clear they would not be accepting the fine lying down.

“We were expecting a fine but nothing as near as severe as the €7,500 that has been handed down and we will definitely be appealing and asking for a reduction,”  said Sean Dunnion.

There is no word as yet if Donegal will appeal Neil McGee’s one match ban. The full back received a ban for appearing to cause damage to Alan Fitzgerald fingers.

There were a number of melees that littered the match particularly in the first half. Kerry’s Alan Fitzgerald and Donegal’s Leo McLoone both received their marching orders during the game.

CAREFUL planning is in progress for the 1916 Centenary Commemorations taking place at CBS, The Green, during the inaugural “History week”, which runs from until March 15 at the school.

The final day will be a Proclamation Day as students and teachers of the school will be joined by invited special guests to remember those executed during the rising as well as the role Kerry played in it.

The Commemoration will begin with a welcome address and the reading of the Proclamation by two senior students, Alan McLoughlin and Michael Kenny. Musically gifted students of the school will play a medley of ballads associated with the Rising.

Danny Goggins will sing his rendition of ‘Foggy Dew’ and Gearóid O’Connor will read his insightful interpretation of the Proclamation for today’s world while the role of each of the 15 men executed at the time of the Rising and Roger Casement will also be discussed in a presentation by the Transition Year Students who have individually researched the ‘Executed of the Rising’.

Generous members of the Tralee Pipe Band have offered to volunteer their morning to pipe the group outside for the raising of a specially commissioned tricolour. The flag was collected at Croke Park during a ‘Flag Week’ ceremony for Secondary schools from President Higgins.

To conclude the commemorations, there will be a lecture series given by two local Kerry Historians, T. Ryle Dwyer and Dr. Tim Horgan (both of whom are past pupils of the CBS), to history students on “Kerry’s involvement in the Rising”.
