Juvenile Academy

Our Juvenile academy restarted on Sunday last after Summer recess. The U6’s travelled to Na Gaeil to play Ballymac & the home team. These games were very entertaining and all parents and mentors enjoyed the skill levels, team work and commitment from the future stars of the 3 clubs. The academy continues this Sunday at 10:30am

U-8’s vs Ballymac & Na Gaeil

Last Sunday, St Pats U-8’s took part in a blitz which was very well held by our neighbours Na Gaeil. We played a number of games against Ballymac and Na Gaeil. All the St Pats players played the full matches and they all tried their best including young Jack Costello, Michael Enright and Darragh Murphy.

With Zack Howarth and especially Thomas Sheehy working hard around the middle they were supplying plenty of ball into a very determined forward line of Fionn, Daniel and Killian. Our defence performed brilliantly in their St. Pats jersey’s. Orlaith and Keelin’s hard tackling and close contact kept our opponents forwards at bay.

The management team were delighted to see the players use some good blocking down, kick passing and handling skills during the games. So now its important that all players continue to attend every training session and practise their skills at home.

U-10’s vs Ballymac:

On Sunday morning in a wind swept Blennerville, we faced a strong Ballymac team and we performed heroically .Liam Sullivan, Sean Crowley, Adam & Caoimhe fought gallantly for every ball; Paddy Moran, Gearoid O’Shea & James Dowling tackled as if their lives depended on it & Seanie Murphy, Shane Howarth & Josh Quilter won every ball that came their way. Also thanks again to Mike Doody and Danny Greaney who helped us out.

Under 11’s:

Our U11’s played away to Ballymac on Tuesday evening and they came home with a well deserved win. In defence Michael Doody, David Faido, Matthew Quilter and Danny Greaney were well on top their game.

In midfield, Samuel Ububaker and Tomas O’Sullivan played outstanding kicking great ball into their forwards Liam O’Sullivan, Adam Mulvihill, Sean Crowley, Seanie Murphy, Martin Laucher and Mikee Healy who took advantage of all their scoring opportunities and finished up winning the game by a point.

Under 12’s:

The u 12s play Keel this evening (Monday 11th) in first game of the central league in Keel at 7pm.

Under 16’s:

County League Semi Final

St Pats 4-6 Asdee/Ballylongford 4-9.

Our U16’s played the County League semi final on Tuesday evening against Asdee/Ballylongford but unfortunately it wasn’t our day.

We started off very well with a point from Gearoid Dillane and Eoin Greaney but Asdee responded very quickly with a goal. Cian Ronan kicked a great ball into Danny Cournane who made it look so easy by planting the ball into the back of the net and seconds later he stole another goal.

However, the game turned quickly when Asdee/Ballylongford were awarded a penalty which was taken very well.

They followed with a point to make the score St Pats 2-2 Asdee/Ballylongford 2-3. Just before half time they scored another goal leaving the half time score St Pats 2-2 Asdee/Ballylongford 3-3. Darragh Sheehan got the opening score in the second half and once again Asdee/Ballylongford responded with a goal.

We were trailing throughout the second half and we saw 1 point from Joshua Laucher, 2 points from Eoin Greaney, 1 goal from Brian Murphy and Danny Cournane got his hat-trick with yet another lovely goal. Once again Sean Hogan played a great game in goals and In defence Joe O’Connor, Brian Murphy, Mikee Cahill, Shane O’Donoghue and Eoin Murphy had a very busy game and did well in clearing numerous ball.

With 9 minutes left we were trailing by 3 points St Pats 4-6 Asdee/Ballylongford 4-9. Asdee/Bally scored 2 consecutive points and then the game changed when Joshua received a great ball from Joe Quilter and scored a lovely goal. With 1 minute to go Shane Jordan rattled the net which left us 1 point up.

However luck wasn’t on our side when Asdee/Ballylongford scored an injury time goal and followed with a point which finished up with us loosing by 3 points.

Final score St Pats 6-6 Asdee/Ballylongford 5-12 Team: Sean Hogan, Joe O’Connor, Mikee Cahill, Eoin Murphy, Shane O’Donoghue, Brian Murphy(1-0), Cian Ronan, Kieran O’Dwyer, Joe Quilter, Darragh Sheehan,(0-1) Gearoid Dillane,(0-1) Danny Cournane(3-0), Joshua Laucher(1-1), Eoin Greaney(0-3), Shane Jordan. The under 16’s will hopefully have a challenge game at the end of the week. Details to be confirmed.

We are awaiting fixtures for the u16 Tralee district board competition. The under 14’s are welcome to train & play with the under 16’s for the remainder of the season.
Under 21’s:

We have combined with Na Gaeil to enter a team in the U21 club championship. Their first outing is a home game against Knocknagoshel/Brosna on Wednesday August 13th at 7pm.

The game will be either in Blennerville or Killeen so keep an eye on the club Facebook page for updates. The team will be managed by Liam & Brendan Poff. Match report in next week’s notes

Juniors

Barrett Cup Round 1:

St Pats 0-16 Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-7

The Junior team had a good win over Kerins O`Rahilly’s in the Barrett Cup, played in Blennerville last Friday. We started well and in the first 10 minutes, we were up by 3points playing against a strong wind.

As the first half went on, Kerins O`Rahilly’s began to dominate the game as they took control of the match with 2 goals inside a minute as they punished our mistakes. We were underperforming and The Charlie Kerins went on to score 4 points in the first half as we only added another point.

Half Time Score St Pats 0-04 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-04. In the second half, we began to play much better with the backs well on top and a good supply of ball to the forwards and midfield taking control of the game. We were beginning to score some great points from all over the field as we cut the lead and with 5 minutes to go we took the lead.

We finished strongly as we put the first half display behind us. This was a good win over a good Kerins O`Rahilly’s team who never gave up and pushed our team all the way to the end.

We were relieved at the final whistle to get the win that puts us into the Semi Final. Austin StacksHAPPY CAMPERS IN CONNOLLY:

Our summer football camp is going great since Tuesday and will finish on Saturday at 1pm. Well done, all! PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: (i) Back to morning football at 11am on Sunday next. Great effort by our Kerry seniors and minors…’Star’, Jack and new addition Seán Ó Riain. (ii) More Under 6/8/10 football on Thursday at 5:45pm. FAOI 13 – FINALS OFF: The Under 13 finals due to be played on Wednesday 6th have been deferred to a later date due to an objection. This objection was heard by the CCC on Wednesday night…expect text or check www.austinstacks.ie. A final: AdeS v Na Gaeil; B final: AdeS v Na Mistéalaigh.

GENE’S RANGERS SINK LAUNE LAUNCH!

After a titanic struggle in the heart of Ballymac on the last day of summer and against the famed blue-jerseyed Laune Rangers, our Under 14 Boys completed a fantastic Kerry title treble: County League Division 1, Féile na nÓg and now the Kelliher Toyota Central League!! Mighty! Despite the absence of our talisman, Michael Slattery, due to an important Kerry Hurling game, we confidently faced Raonaithe na Leamhna who set out and set up with a Donegal-like blanket defence and two men up front! Cuimhnigh ar sin! The lads from Poc were highly motivated, well organised and had put a well-honed game plan in place. A crowded midfield meant that the middle third was all clogged up and exchanges were tough and fast.

This kept the scoring close and when we did breach the defence we were found wanting with at least four glorious goal-scoring opportunities and, ergo, dá bhrí sin, we entered the dressing rooms at half time in a disappointed mood as we trailed by 0-1…0-6 to 0-5. Everyone upped the ‘ante’ in the second half and all players were given a part in the action.

Goals by Seán Carmody, Dean Scanlon and Joe Looby-Lugandu were accompanied by points from Seán Quilter, Gearóid Ó Síocháin, Gearóid Fitzgerald and the irrepressible, versatile and dynamic Donagh McMahon! Egged on by our main cheerleader, super Alicante Rockie, Marta Martinez, whose English skills won many admirers, the boys’ performance in the second half greatly improved and even a last minute goal by Laune Rangers did not take from the sheen of the victory.

An scór deiridh:- AdeS: 3-11; Raonaithe na Leamhna: 2-10. A gracious Joe Looby-Lugandu accepted the trophy from/ón bhfear iontach gaelach úd ón nGaeltacht, Liam Ó Rócháin, Cathaoirleach, Coiste an Cheantair Láir. The squad: Garry Clifford, David Oba, James Quigley, Dylan Ó Cathasaigh, Jack McGrath, Eoghan Carroll, Dara Barry-Walsh, Gearóid Fitzgerald, Seán Carmody, Evan Maher, Seán Quilter, Michael O’Gara, Pádhraic Linnane, David Couchman, Andrew Breen, Gearóid Ó Síocháin, Dean Scanlon, Joe Looby-Lugandu (captaen), Conor Myers, Leon Sholamba and Oisín Liston.

The man-of-the-match award was given to Eoghan Carroll and, in a game of great intensity, this was an amazing achievement considering Eoghan is under age again next year!!! Agus an focal scoir: thanks to Ballymac for hosting the final and tribute must be paid to the sportsmanship of the Laune Rangers squad who sportingly joined David Oba’s celebrations! Maith sibh, a Leaideanna na Carraige!

Austin StacksTREVOR BARRETT MEMORIAL HURLING TOURNAMENT:

It was a morning, an afternoon and an evening of some brilliant hurling – fitting, for the first staging of the Trevor Barrett Memorial Tournament held in Connolly Park on last Saturday (2nd August) – a day after which Trevor would have celebrated his 30th birthday (born 1stAugust 1984). From the time when referee Paudie Dineen threw in the ball for the first game at 11.09am to when Paddy White signaled the end of the final game at a minute past six, we were entertained to some super stuff.

Only a point separated the sides in the first game with Laochra Óg, from the Macroom area (set up as a Club just over six months ago) coming out on top by the narrowest of margins (1-9 to 3-2) over their fellow Corkonians, Lismire (Man of the Match – Brian Corcoran). Coincidentally, both sides met again in the Shield Final, and on this occasion the result was reversed when Lismire came out on top on a scoreline of 3-6 to 0-5.

The build-up to the Cup Final saw the following results – Austin Stacks beat St. Pats (3-10 to 2-2 with Breandán Caball Man of the Match); Causeway beat Laochra Óg (2-27 to 0-1 with Pádraig Harty Man of the Match); Lismire beat St. Pats (1-13 to 3-0 with John O’Callaghan Man of the Match) and Austin Stacks beat Laochra Óg (2-10 to 1-2 with Jim McCarthy Man of the Match) We thought we saw some great hurling in those opening six games – and we did.

But the best was yet to come in the Cup Final. Congratulations to an excellent Causeway team who were the first winners of the Cup – but our lads pushed them all the way in that superb Final (1-10 to 1-5). And if there was a prize for the score of the game or the goal of the game or of the Tournament, then it would, without a shadow of a doubt, go to Joe Brennan’s goal scored in the 4th minute of the second half. Joe himself was fouled and most people thought Paul Daly would point the resultant free.

But Paul struck the ball low into Joe’s path and Joe, with his back still to goal, connected beautifully over his shoulder and the sliothar went straight into the top corner of the net. And if Mick Mackey or Christy Ring or Nicky Rackard or DJ Carey or Henry Shefflin have scored as good a goal, then we haven’t seen it or read about it (although Francie McLoughlin claims that he himself has scored a better one – the evidence Francie please).

The Cup, the Shield and the other trophies were presented immediately after the Cup Final – with Team Manager, Mark Power, the Master of Ceremonies. Before that Mark thanked everyone, too numerous to list here, but including our Sponsors, Caterers, Red Cross men, Referees and Officials and all our own members, who had anything to do with the staging of the Tournament. Ger McCarthy, the Co. Hurling Officer, and himself a former Causeway player, spoke, as did Trevor’s father, Richard, also with Causeway connections, followed by Club Chairman, Aidan O’Connor.

Lismire’s Terry Aherne, won the Man of the Match in the Shield Final while Causeway’s Jason Diggins won the Cup Final Man of the Match. Fittingly, Peter O’Regan won the Tournament Man of the Match, after some brilliant displays in all three matches, but especially in the Cup Final when he cleared his lines time after time, when it looked certain that Causeway would add to their tally. Also fittingly the Causeway captain who received the Winners Cup was none other than Brian Cantillon, a first cousin of Trevor’s.

Trophies were also presented to the Barrett Family (with the inscription ‘Trevor – the ultimate Rockie’) and to Trevor’s sister, Gillian on behalf of his girl-friend, Lorraine Counihan. On behalf of the Club thanks again to all the teams who participated and to the other three teams who originally entered the Competition – Crotta, O’Dorney and Wolfe Tones – but who had to withdraw when their teams subsequently became involved in their respective Co.

Championships. A special thanks to Mark and the whole Hurling squad who left no stone unturned in organizing this brilliant Tournament which, we are sure, will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

HURLING:

The opening round games (quarter final) of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship are due to go ahead on this Friday evening (8th Aug). Our game, against Lixnaw B, is in Connolly Park at 7pm. However, as we write we learn that they may not go ahead on this date after all. Check Website for updates.

ANDREW MORRISSEY:

It’s great to have Club Hurler, Andrew Morrissey back on Radio Kerry again after his sojourn in Limerick Radio for the past while. Andrew starts back on this Tuesday where he is now presenting the ‘Morning Show’ with Elaine Kinsella. While working and living in Limerick not alone did Andrew never miss a Hurling game with the Club but he never missed a Training Session as well, commuting up and down from the Mid-West capital the whole time. That’s true commitment and loyalty to one’s Club – the essence of the GAA.

Great to have you back in Town again Andrew.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Our postponed Round 7 Co. League game, away to Listowel Emmets), has been fixed for this Saturday evening (9th Aug) at 7pm but, like the Hurling, this is not certain either as it may be switched to the following afternoon.. Check Web for updates.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL:

Na Gaeil 2-10; Austin Stacks 0-8. Having already qualified for the Town League semi final with four wins out of four, selectors Colm Mangan, Tim McMahon and John O’Sullivan released seven players who lined out in our previous round 4 game to travel with the Senior squad to play a Challenge Game in Ballyvourney on the same evening (Wed. 30th July) and thereby drafted in a number of Minors in their place.

In all ten Minors lined out in this evening’s (30th July) 5th and final round game in Killeen but we came up short against a very good Na Gaeil side. We managed only three points in the first half – two from team captain, Eoin Colgan and our opening score in the 6thminute from Timmy Murphy. Two goals by the opposition in that first half meant we had it all to do in the second period and at half time we trailed by 2-5 to 0-3. We played much better in the second half , a half in which both sides scored five points each – ours coming from Seán Dukes (2), Ciarán Flanagan, Louis Ryle and David O’Sullivan.

We now await other results to determine who we play in the semi final/final of the competition. Team: Sean Purcell, Shane Greensmyth, Niall Carroll-Cane, Jack Kenny, Tom McLoughlin, David O’Sullivan (0-1), Craig Corcoran, Ciarán Flanagan (0-1), Jack O’Shea, Kyle Fitzgibbon, Eoin Colgan (Capt) (0-2), James Galvin, Timmy Murphy (0-1), Danny Carroll, Seán Dukes (0-2). Subs used: Colin Griffin (ht), Louis Ryle (ht) (0-1), Calvin Foley (ht).

Our Co. League semi final against Rathmore goes ahead on next Wednesday (6th Aug) at 7pm in Rathmore. The winner plays Killarney Legion in the final. We have also drawn Rathmore (away) in the 1st round (quarter final) of the County Championship (Molyneaux Cup). This game has been fixed for Friday, 15th August at 7pm.

U21 FOOTBALL:

Fixtures have been announced for the U21F Club Championship. Teams have been divided into three groups of 7. We are in Group A. The 1st round involves games between teams in Groups B and C. The 7 losers then play in the Shield competition while the winners play teams in Group A in the Cup competition. The 1st round games between B and C are fixed for Wednesday, 13th August, so our first game could be the week after i.e. Wednesday, 20th August.

U16

U16s have qualified for the Semi-final of Division 1 of the Co League. They play Gneeveguilla in Gneeveguilla on Wednesday the 6th at 7pm. Please support. Senior Football Junior Town League Strand Rd played Ballymac in the Junior Town League on Thursday last at 7.30 in Strand Rd. Strand Rd were the first off the mark with a point from Seán Walsh after six minutes. This was followed by a well taken free by John O’Connor. Ballymac’s first score came 12 minutes in and was a goal.

Sean Walsh pointed a free to level shortly after and Strand Rd dominated for the next while and it culminated in a goal scored by Seán Walsh to put us 1-03 to Ballymac’s 1-00 ahead with 17 minutes gone. Ballymac did get back a couple of points one a free and Strand Road also scored 2 more before half time.

An excellent clearance on the line by back Derek Horgan just before half time left the half time score Strand Rd 1-05 Ballymac 1-02. Ballymac were first to score in the second half and had equalised before Strand Road got their first score and would have been ahead had it not been for an excellent save by goalkeeper Robert O’Conner in the 6th minute. Strand Roads first score came 15 minute in and was a point from Gavin O’Brien followed shortly after by a point to equalise by Ballymac.

Further scores from Sean Walsh and despite some excellent defending from Jason O’Leary and all round play from Rory Molloy, Ballymac worked their way in to score a late goal in the 31st minute to leave the final score Strand Rd 1-08 to Ballymac’s 2-06.

The bootcamp continues for another 5 weeks every Monday & Wednesday nights at 7:30 in the club grounds. New additions are welcome as you can pay per class at a cost of €10.

Juvenile Academy:

The Juvenile Academy will resume this Sunday after a break for the bank holiday weekend. All players to be there for 10:30am Under 11’s: Our U11’s played against Na Gaeil away from home last Tuesday evening and turned out to be a close game in the end. We only got 2 scores in the first half 1 point from Danny Greaney and 1 from Tomas O’Sullivan but Seanie Murphy was very unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet after he hit the crossbar on 3 occassions.

Jade Harkins played outstanding in goals and her kickouts were very accurate finding her red and white team mates every time. In the second Jade came outfield and David Faido replaced her in goals and he played just as well as Jade making numerous saves.

Thankfully, in this half we took advantage of our scoring opportunities and we saw goals from Martin Laucher, Tomas O’Sullivan and Jade Harkins and points from Martin, Danny, Jade and Tomas. We saw fantastic clearances by Cillian Lynch in defence and Samuel Abubaker played a stormer in Midfield.

Full time score St.Pats 4-7 Na Gaeil 5-9

Team: David Faido, Jade Harkins(1-1), Sean Crowley, Martin Laucher(1-1), Danny Greaney(0-2), Tomas O’Sullivan(1-3), Samuel Abubaker, Adam Mulvihille, Cillian Lynch, Corey O’Shea, Seanie Murphy.

Under 16’s:

Our U16’s played against Asdee/Ballylongford on Tuesday nite at home and what a game we were treated to! It was a very tight and exciting game and it was nip and tuck right to the final whistle. St. Pats started very well with 2 points by Eoin Greaney followed by a goal a few minutes later.

Another two points by Joshua Laucher and Cian Ronan gave our lads a reasonable lead. Towards the end of the first half the visitors fought back reducing the deficit to only 4 points going into the second half. Sean Hogan made some superb saves in goals while Joe O’Connor and Brian Murphy played outstanding in defence clearing ball time and time again.

Kieran O’Dwyer and Cian Ronan won alot of prime possession that kept our attack flowing and Darragh Sheehan was cleaning up in full forward fielding high balls in the air. However, Asdee/ Ballylongford started the second half very brightly scoring 5 unstoppable goals.

Our lads showed great determination pulling back a 7 point lead to just one point. A great attack by Shane O’Donoghue that hit the crossbar and then landed into the hands of Eoin Greaney who rattled the net to put St Pats 2 points up just before the final whistle.

Final score St.Pats 6-12 Asdee/Ballylongford 7-7.

Team :Sean Hogan ; Joe o Connor ; Mikey Cahill ; Brian Murphy ; Shane o Donoghue ; Eoghan Murphy ; Kieran Dwyer (0-1) ; Cian Ronan (1-2) ; Josh Laucher (1-3); Cillian O’ Riordan ; Jack Lynch ; Eoin Greaney (4-4) ; Darragh Sheehan ( 0-2 ).

Seniors

Credit Union County Senior Football League Div 2 Round 8:

Gneeveguilla 3-8 St Pats 0-9

Our senior team travelled to Gneeveguilla last Sunday in the hope of keeping their slim chance of maintaining Division 2 status for 2015 but they were undone in the final quarter by a dogged Gneeveguilla side.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind, St Pats started brightly and had two quick opening points from Willie Hurley.

In the 5th minute, Gneeveguilla had a man sent off which didn’t aid their cause as St Pats were dominating the game in every sector. Luke Mulligan, playing as the spare man was winning a lot of breaking ball around the middle and he also made a foray into the Gneeveguilla half in the 10th minute and finished off a well worked score to extend the lead to 3 points.

Brendan Poff added a further point in the 16th minute after a great ball in by Adrian Greaney. Whilst dominating the possession and being well able to curtail the few attacks By Gneeveguilla, St Pats wasted some chances through poor shot selection and bad wides. Andy Byrne kicked a monster point from 60 yards in the 20th minute to make it a 4 point game.

Gneeveguilla eventually got on the score sheet with a free in the 24th minute but St Pats replied with points from Mulligan and Liam O’Sullivan to give them a 5 point lead at half-time. Gneeveguilla started the second half brightly and kicked two points in the opening five minutes.

St Pats replied with a lovely point from play by Willie Hurley after a great ball in from Anton O’Callaghan. Gneeveguilla added a further to reduce the deficit to 3 points but Paul McMahon responded with a fisted effort in the 40th minute and St Pats looked good value for their 4 point lead. However, disaster struck two minutes later as Gneeveguilla won a penalty after a foul on their corner forward.

They duly dispatched it to leave the minimum between the teams and the momentum pendulum swung in favour of the home side. History repeated itself 5 minutes later as the same corner forward was again judged to have been fouled in the box and Gneeveguilla dispatched the second penalty to put them into the lead for the first time in the game going into the final quarter.

St Pats tried to get back into the game but were caught on the counter attack and Gneeveguilla goaled in the 50th minute which was the final nail in the visitors coffin.

Gneeveguilla added further points in the closing minutes to put gloss on the final score line. However, they were good value for their win considering they played the majority of the game with 14 men.

St Pats deserve huge credit for their performance in the opening 40 minutes but the team is lacking confidence at present and the concession of the two penalties cost them dearly.

This result confirms relegation to Division 3 for next season but hopefully, the team can build on the positives of this performance for the remainder of the league. Team: P Bailey, P O’Connor, A Greaney, Jake Foley, L Mulligan, Jeffrey Foley, P McMahon, L Poff, L O’Sullivan, B Poff, A O’Callaghan, B Savage, W Hurley, A Byrne & G Savage, Subs: S Dowling, C Moore, E Teahan, K Quirke, J Fitzgerald, B Boyle, M O’Sullivan.

Get well soon to Paudie O’Connor who came off after a nasty knee injury in the second half. Next County League fixture is at home to Laune Rangers on the weekend of August 16/17th. The final Junior Town League game is away to Kerins O’Rahilly’s on Tuesday August 5th with a throw in time of 7:30pm in Strand Road.

Under 11’s

Our u11’s had another busy week. On Tuesday we played at home against Mitchels but we were beaten by a very strong team. We saw our first and only point in the first half by Liam O’Sullivan. In the second half Michael Doody and Martin Laucher both scored very skillful goals and we saw 2 lovely points from Danny Greaney and Martin Laucher.

David Faido in goals made some very impressive saves while Cillian Lynch, Matthew Quilter, Jade Harkins and Liam O’Sullivan played outstanding in defence.

On Thursday we played at home against Austin Stacks. Our boys were beaten but they gave a much improved performance. Again we missed some scoring opportunities seeing points from Cillian Lynch, Danny Greaney and Martin Laucher. Mikey Healy scored a lovely soccer style goal, Martin Laucher planted the ball into the net and Danny Greaney lobbed the goalie.

Under 16’s

Our Under 16’s produced another Lazarus like comeback last Wednesday night where they drew with Fossa after being down 9 points. An injury time goal by Eoin Greaney was the icing on a fantastic second half performance. It was also great to see the return of Tommy Lynch after injury. Final score was 4-12 to 3-15. The next outing is at home to Asdee/Ballylongford. This is due to be played Tuesday night July 29th at 7:30pm in Blennerville. Best of luck to the team and management. Result in next week’s notes.

HURLING

Kenmare 2-14; Austin Stacks 0-12.

The final of the South Kerry JH League played in ideal conditions in Lewis Road on last Wednesday evening (23rd July) ended in an eight points defeat for us, thereby relinquishing the title we won last season.

After a poor start we found ourselves behind by 1-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes. But we had a very good 2nd quarter scoring six points without reply to level the game after 27 minutes (0-7 to 1-4). Paul Daly scored four of these (all from frees) to add to his opener, also from a free, in the 5th minute. Our other two points came from play, both brilliant efforts by Joe Brennan.

Both sides had a point each in the closing minutes of the half, ours scored by Ronan Gilsenan from play, to leave the sides deadlocked at the break (0-8 to 1-5).

We didn’t play to our full potential in the second half. Apart from two more pointed frees by Paul Daly and another scored by John McCarthy deep in added time, our only score from play came in the 54th minute from Danny Maguire.

Peter Doyle in goals and Peter O’Regan, Andrew Morrissey, Michael O’Leary and Aaron Barry played well also.

Team: Peter Doyle, Paudie Bradley, Peter O’Regan, Seán King, Andrew Morrissey, Jim McCarthy, Breandán Caball, Shane Fitzgerald, Michael O’Leary, Joe Brennan (0-2), Aaron Barry, Danny Maguire (0-1), Paul Daly (Capt) (0-7 frees), Ronan Gilsenan (0-1), John McCarthy (0-1 free).

Sub used: Brian Meehan (43m).

Prior to the game there was a Minute’s Silence in honour of the late Fr. George Foley who was a member of the Stacks MH Co. Championship winning team of 1955.

We have drawn Lixnaw at home in the 1st round (quarter final) of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship. The game is fixed for Connolly Park on Friday fortnight (8th Aug) at 7pm.

Details of the concluding fixtures in the County League have yet to announced.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Round 8 of the Co. League, against St. Michaels/Foilmore, did not go ahead as scheduled due to the sad passing of Stephen’s father (see Sympathy). In the meantime we are due to play another back game (the Round 7 tie away to Listowel Emmets) on the weekend after next (9th/10th Aug). Check Web for updates.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-18; St. Pats 0-14

So far, in the Town League, it has been three out of three wins for our B team, the last win in Blennerville last Monday week (21st July) after earlier victories against John Mitchels and Kerins O’Rahillys. The penultimate round away in Ballymac is fixed for this Monday evening (28th July) at 7.45pm with the final round, away to Na Gaeil, due to go ahead on Wednesday evening (30th July) at 7.30pm.

SPORTS FORECAST UPDATE: Treasurer, Michael Kenny submits the following report.

‘’Well what a few weeks it has been since the last update. Lots of us went down with Brazil and Naymar and ye of little faith who went with Crokes instead of the Rockies, and many more lost points by going for Cork instead of Kerry!
On the other hand lots of points were gained by staying with Kilkenny in Leinster, Djokovic for the Tennis, and lots of people got 12 points by going for “other” in World Cup top scorer.

And so to the Leaderboard: Congratulations to Kevin O Carroll who is our new leader on 89 points. Previous leader Frank O Donnell is on 86 points. Finbarr Smith and Edward Stack share third spot on 85.

Jim Murray and Johnny Clifford each have 83. The entry of Pa and Anne Hoare comes next on 82.

Malachy Nagle, Derek O Connor, and John Galvin each have 81 and finally Michael Tangney and Tommy Dowling with 80 each.
All other entries have 79 or less but some could still make a late bid if results fall their way.

So now we are down to just 4 events; the 2 All Ireland Finals and the 2 county finals.

Thanks to you all for your entries and your continued interest. Next update at the end of Sept when the 2 All Irelands will be sorted out.

As ever all totals will be cross checked for errors and gremlins before and money is handed out.’’

SENIORS

Ballymac 1 – 15 Scartaglin 0 – 9.
Our Senior team secured two valuable Co. League Points on Saturday evening last with a 9 point victory away to Scartaglin. It was the home side who started the better and had 3 points on the board by the 5th minute.

Our lads then started to dominate and came back into the game with a succession of scores the pick of which was a superb point from a side line by Genie Griffin. Indeed but for some good saves by the Scart goalkeeper we would have been further ahead at half time at which stage Ballymac led on a score of 0 – 10 to 0 – 5.

Our lads started the second half in a determined fashion and 4 Padraig McCarthy points (2 frees) and 1 from Genie Griffin extended the lead to 10 points.

Scart hit back with 2 points of their own but Padraig McCarthy sealed the victory with a goal with 10 minutes remaining. Some resolute defending by TJ Casey, Con Reynolds and Denis Leen ensured no way back for the Scart lads. We used our full compliment of subs which included Jonathan Brick making his senior team debut.

Team: P Laide, Denis Leen, T J Casey, B O Donnell, C. Counihan (0 – 1), C. Reynolds, A Bonn, A Breen, K O Shea, Mike Leen, Dermot Leen (0 – 1), P Mc Carthy (1 – 6), L Sweeney, D. O Shea (0 – 3), G Griffin (0 – 4). Subs: C Leen, M. Herlihy, Mossie Leen, J. Brick, M. Galvin.

Ballymac’s next game in the Co. League will take place on the 16/17th August when we welcome An Gaeltacht to Ballymac.

COISTE NA NOG

FAOI 16: Ballymac 4-13 Castlegregory 4-10
Our U16’s travelled to Castlegregory last Wednesday evening to take on the locals in Round 4 of the County League. After a tough game on the night we came away with a great victory and this result gives us a home semi final. This Wednesday evening we are away to Finuge in the final round of County League.

FAOI 14 : BALLYMAC 4-13 AUSTIN STACKS B 3-4

Stacks B were our opponents in Ballymac in the semi final of U14 central division. Ballymac were always on top with early points from Daire Keane and Josh. Daire Keane then scored 1-3 from frees before Dara Chawke won possession ,passed to Tadhg Brick who found the net. Daire Keane added another 1-2 before the break the goal coming from a long pass from Josh. Half time score Ballymac 3-8 Stacks b 1-2.

Many changes were made at half time and Darragh Broderick ,who was prominent throughout was our main scorer in the second half getting 1-2. James McDonnell looked lively when introduced, Dara Leen, Josh, and Liam O’Brien solid as always.

Further points from Daire Keane completed our scoring though Stacks managed to get through for two goals. We are now in the final of this competition where Ardfert await us, this game is due to be played in Ballymac on Bank Holiday Monday evening .

FAOI 11: Last Tuesday we travelled to Kerins o Rahillys & on Thursday we travelled to Ardfert in Rd. 3 & 4 of Coiste Trá Lí League. Its great to see a great effort been put in by the lads, they are improving weekly and we hope this continues.

FAOI 10: Following our fantastic win in the John Mitchels Blitz the previous weekend we travelled to Miltown/Castlemaine blitz on Sunday last. While we didn’t bring any trophy home, more importantly we fielded two teams which meant all players got maximum game time which was of great benefit to them all.

All the Club wish a speedy recovery to Luke O Connell from a hand injury sustained in a recent U11 game. Luke was one of our star performers at the recent John Mitchels Blitz.

MILE BUIOCHAS: Many Thanks to St. Pats in Blennerville for inviting us to take part in their Blitz. Our U6 and u8 boys had a great morning and played some great football. Well done to all the U6s, who showed some great skills and understanding of the game. A fantastic effort was made by all the U8 boys in particular Luke Griffin, Maurice Harrington, Ciaran O’Connell, Matthew Rogers, Con Sheahan and Sam Slattery. Mile Buiochas also to the mentors and coaches for their dedication and hard work with the boys every week.

CAILINÍ FAOI 13: Ballymac 5-8 Dr Crokes 0-4 Our U13 girls played Dr Crokes on Tuesday 22nd in Ballymac in the U13 C Co Championship . With both sides fielding mostly U12 players and Crokes missing some players also , the first quarter was uneventful with the younger girls adapting to the full pitch .

However once the Ballymac girls found their feet they surged ahead , with U14s Aine , Maeve and Niamh and Ashling O Connell leading the way in the central positions our forwards found their range and we led at half time by 2-4 to 3 pts , goals coming from Emily O Donoghue and Lisa Curran .

We dominated the 2nd half with further goals from Emily 2 & Cora . We ran out easy enough winners in the end , though Crokes total didn’t reflect their efforts during the game . Scorers Emily O Donoghue 3-1 , Lisa Curran 1-3 , Cora Savage 1-1, Aine Rice 0-2 ,Caroline Hurley 0-1 Team : Elle Sugrue, Cait Rice , Caoimhe Carroll , Maeve O Sullivan, Catriona Sommers , Niamh Rahilly , Roisin Long , Aine Rice , Ashling O Connell , Cora Savage , Caroline Hurley , Emily O Donoghue , Lisa Curran , Elle Mc Elligott & Sophie O Donoghue We play Spa in next round on Tuesday 29th time and venue TBC

Cailini U10 girls were also in action this week, playing against Fingue/St Senans. All the girls played well and did their club proud.

Senior Football
Junior Town League Strand Rd 1-13 Na Gaeil 1-16
This Junior Town League game was played on a beautiful summers evening on Sunday last. Strand Rd opened the scoring with a point from Cian Sayers in the first minute.

Na Gaeil followed with one of their own in the second. Strand Road dominated this half with fine play throughout including an outstanding save half way through the half form goalie Gary Sugrue.

There were an array of scorers including Timmy O’Sullivan, Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Shane Flavin. Ryan Carroll was once again on target whether from play, one point following an impressive run from Back Jason O’Leary, or from frees or 45’s. The half time score was Strand Rd 0-09 Na Gaeil 0-07.

Timmy O’Sullivan opened Strand Roads scoring in the second half but Na Gaeil took control of the game after this and they got a succession of scores to put them 2 points up half way through the half. Ryan Carroll got one back from a free in the 17th but a quick goal by Na Gaeil in the 18th put 4 between the sides.

Not to be a superbly scored goal by Cian Sayers in the 20th once again narrowed the gap to one. The score was now Strand Rd 1-11 Na Gaeil 1-12 with 10 minutes to go.

Strand Rd went on to score a further 2 both by Ryan Carroll but Na Gaeil came back the stronger and scored a further 4 to leave the final score Strand Rd 1-13 Na Gaeil 1-16. Players worthy of mention were Liam Kissane when introduced, James O’Connor and Johnny Kelly for their defensive roles and link play.

Keanes Supervalu Minor Football Championship Round 3 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-05 Mid Kerry 1-09

The 3rd round of the Minor Football Championship was played in a warm JP O’Sullivan Park in Killorglin on Friday evening last.

Kerins O’Rahillys were first off the mark with a fine point scored in the second minute by Ryan Carroll. It took Mid Kerry 7 minutes to score to level things up. Gearóid Savage scored a fine goal in the 11th minute to put a goal between the sides but a succession of points from Mid Kerry in the 15 and 16th minutes narrowed the gap.

An outstanding save from Jack Shortt in the 17th stopped them from going ahead and the got the equaliser soon after. Another fantastic save from Jack towards the end of the half reprieved us again and Mid Kerry went 1 ahead on the stroke of half time leaving the score Kerins O’Rahillys 1-01 Mid Kerry 0-05.

Kerins O’Rahillys once again opened the scoring in the second half with a point from Cormac Coffey in the first minute to level the sides. Mid Kerry went ahead in the 7th and Ryan Carroll levelled it with a free in the 9th to make it Kerins O’Rahillys 1-03 to Mid Kerry 0-06.

For the next 18 minutes we had possession but couldn’t convert it to scores. Mid Kerry scored 3 points during this time to put them 3 ahead. Then in the 27th minute Pádraig Griffin was pulled down in the square resulting in a Kerins O’Rahillys penalty.

This was blasted in the net by Ryan Carroll to level the sides and a point scored by Ryan shortly after had the Kerins O’Rahillys supporters on their feet. Time was up and Mid Kerry had the ball in stoppage time and got a tap in goal in 31st minute Kerins O’Rahillys won the kick out but Ryan Carroll’s resulting point wasn’t enough and the final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 2-05 Mid Kerry 1-09.

UNDER 12 FOOTBALL

(i) We hosted St Pats in Connolly Park on Sunday evening in this Under 13B Central League match. We dominated the early exciting exchanges but struggled to put scores on the board. Then when our players started playing for each other and moving the ball more directly, we reaped our reward. We ran out comfortable winners despite the fact that it was our Under 12s who were representing the club. The most pleasing aspect of the contest was the cross-section of scores; and the general performance of each player was very encouraging. (ii) We had a very enjoyable day at Fitzgerald Stadium on Wednesday last. We had three very competitive matches and each player gave a great account of himself. We kicked scores of which Mickey or the ‘Star’ would be would have been proud and we had some Séamus Moynihan-like efforts from our defenders. Many of these players will play in this stadium at senior level for club and county at some stage in the future! We are grateful to the organisers for a great day of fantastic football.

TREVOR BARRETT MEMORIAL HURLING TOURNAMENT: The official launch of the Trevor Barrett Memorial Hurling Tournament took place in the Clubhouse last Friday evening (18th July) attended by members of Trevor’s family and his Hurling colleagues.
Club Chairman, Aidan O’Connor and Ger McCarthy, Kerry Hurling Official were also in attendance and they, along with Lorraine Counihan, made the draw for the competition which takes place in the Connolly Park and Caherslee pitches on the August Bank Holiday Saturday (2nd Aug). Full details of the fixtures in next week’s Notes. See the Website for Adrienne’s photographs of the launch.

SENIOR HURLING: In the meantime we are due to play Kenmare in the Final of the South Kerry League. The game was originally fixed for this Friday evening but we now understand that it may be brought forward to this Wednesday evening (23rd July). Check Web for updates. Details of the concluding fixtures in the County League have yet to announced also.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Round 8 of the Co. League goes ahead this weekend. Our game, away to St. Michaels/Foilmore, takes place in Ballinskelligs on Saturday evening (26th July) at 7pm.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-11; St. Kierans 1-7.
Our Minors had a good win in Castleisland last Tuesday week (15th July) in round 2 of the Co. Championship. After a very good first half we led at the break by 1-7 to 0-2.
But Kierans refused to throw in the towel and by the end of the third quarter had reduced the deficit to just four points scoring 1-4 without reply in the space of ten minutes. But then we began to dominate again and closed out the game in fine style
Team: Klaudio Dema, Seán Hurley, Niall Carroll-Cane, Dylan Harnett (Capt), Darragh Scanlon, Seán Ryan (0-2), Jack O’Shea, Ciarán Flanagan (0-2), Calvin Foley (1-0), Louis Ryle, Jack Morgan (1-1 – one free), Colin Griffin (0-2), Seán Fitzmaurice (1-2 – 2 frees), Craig Corcoran, Seán Dukes (0-1).
Subs used: Jessie O’Sullivan (40m), Fergal Ryan (50m) (0-1), Anthony Moymihan (56m), Ferdia O’Brien (58m), Jack Kenny (59m).

MINOR FOOTBALL: East Kerry 5-14; Austin Stacks 1-10.
We then had three days of a break before we traveled to Fossa on last Friday evening (18th July) for round 3 of the Championship. However we found this Divisional team far stronger and trailed by 2-11 to 1-3 at half time.
Despite having a far better second half we still could not close that gap and had to give way to a better team on the day.

Subs used: James O’Connor (15m), Fergal Ryan (42m), Craig Corcoran – blood sub 17m to 21m and full sub at 43m), Jack Kenny (46m), Sam Nealon (53m), Shane O’Neill (54m).

FOOTNOTE: It’s a pity we couldn’t have marked the occasion with a win. The occasion relates to a record equaling number of competitive appearances in the Minor grade by Ciarán Flanagan. Flan was making his 37th appearance that Friday evening, equaling the record which has been held by John Dennis since 2006.  The next highest is Ciarán O’Connell who is just one behind when he made his 36th appearance at the end of the 2012 season.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Our Co. League semi final against Rathmore did not go ahead last week and no new date has been fixed as we write.
So far in the Town League we have played just one of our five round games (that, our win away to John Mitchels). Our round 4 game, at home to St. Pats, is due to go ahead as scheduled on this Monday evening (21st July) at 7.30pm with the round 3 postponed game away to Na Gaeil due to go ahead on Wednesday evening (23rd July) also at 7.30pm. The round 2 postponed game, (away to Kerins O’Rahillys), has yet to be refixed . And the final round 5 game, at home to Ballymac, is fixed for next Monday evening (28th July) at 7,30pm

U21 FOOTBALL: South Kerry 1-17; Austin Stacks 0-8.
On a beautiful summers evening in Cahersiveen on last Wednesday (16th July) the Divisional side (with all 9 Clubs represented of their 30 man panel) proved too strong for our lads .in the quarter final of the Co. Championship.
South Kerry went into an early two points lead but we were quickly back on level terms with two good points from play. The first came after a brilliant individual run by corner back Seán Ryan (who had a brilliant game the previous evening with our Minors) and the second a minute later (in the 8th minute) with David  O’Sullivan and Greg Horan  placing Danny Carroll who scored.
The home side then began to dominate and all their remaining eight points of the half came from play while our three points came from well taken frees by Darragh O’Brien.
This left the home side with a double score lead at half time (0-10 to 0-5).
When South Kerry scored the only goal of the game two minutes after the resumption it was then a case of damage limitation for us.
We were confined to just three more points during this half – all from play by Danny Carroll, Seán Ryan and Alan Duggan, while the opposition scored a further seven.
Team: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Barry Walsh, Eoghan McKivergan, Joseph O’Kelly, Seán Ryan (0-2), Conor Jordan, Ciarán O’Connell, Greg Horan, Alan Duggan (0-1), David O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Brien (Capt) (0-3 frees), Shane Crowley, Eamon McAllen, Danny Carroll (0-2), Kyle Fitzgibbon.
Subs used: Jack O’Shea (24m), Breandán Caball (ht), James Galvin (ht), Ciarán Flanagan (43m), Dylan Harnett (47m), Colin Griffin (51m).
So now it’s on to the Club Championship, the draw for which is to be made shortly.

MIKEY SHEEHY: It was nice to relive once again the skills and the many brilliant performances of Mikey Sheehy in last Sunday’s Laochra Gael Programme on TG4 – what a difference to the live football we witnessed on RTE TV from 4pm on the same afternoon.

CONGRATULATIONS: to former Club Footballer, Roy Enright and his new wife, Daniella Sloat, who were married in Tralee last Saturday.

CONTRATULATIONS: also to former Club Hurler, Sean Farrell, now resident in Fossa, Killarney, and his wife Marie (nee O’Sullivan – sister of Nora O’Connor) who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the weekend. Sean was a member of that famous MH team that won the 1955 Co. Championship.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. Phone Ian from 7pm at 066 7126942 for bookings.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse every Monday and Thursday nights at 9.30pm.

LOTTO: Last Monday week’s (14th  July) Jackpot worth €5,000 was not won. The numbers drawn were 1, 11, 13 and 26.
The €20 Prizes went to Ryan Taylor Houlihan and Brian Neenan, both c/o The Club; Tom Hoare, c/o Denis O’Regan; and Maurice J. Harmon and Billy Curtin, both c/o Club Rockies.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of Fr. George Foley (a Vice President of the Club and right wing back on that brilliant MH Team that won the 1955 Co. Championship.  Fr. George was of course a son of the famous Kerryman GAA Reporter 1923-1966, known far and wide as PF); Doreen Kenny (nee Sheehy), Caherslee (sister of former Club Hurler, Niall); Nora Betteridge, Annascaul and late of Tralee; Jack Gaffer Sheehy, Mitchels Square and Boherbee; Nuala Heffernan (nee Healy), Cloonanorig and late of Garranes and Collorus, Kenmare; Richard O’Connell, The Cottages, Blennerville; and James Powell, The Willow, Clonmore, Ballymullen and late of Urban Terrace, Boherbee who died during the past week.

Juniors:

Junior County League Division 5 Final: St Pats 4-06 Duagh 2-07

Pride of place this week goes to our Junior team who won their respective county league final last Thursday night. The final was played in Knocknagoshel in perfect conditions with both teams giving us a very entertaining game of football. Duagh started very well and were up 1-02 to 0-01 after 6 minutes with Sean Dowling getting our point. We were slow to start but with Jeffrey Foley and Anthon O’Callaghan beginning to dominate midfield, we came into the match strongly.

In the 10th minute, Thomas (Massi) O’Sullivan finished a well worked move to the net as we took control of the game and two minutes later, the same player scored his second goal with the score of the game as the ball was worked from the corner back up the field with eight players involved. David Kerins got a point in the 13th minute to lead by 2-02 to 1-02.

Brandon Boyle scored a goal in the 17th minute after been set up by more attacking play from our wing backs Jake Foley and Paudie O’Connor with Jordan Conway also involved. Brendain Savage was playing well and got his reward in the 24th minute when he finished another move with a goal with James Costello involved in setting him up for a well taken score.

We were dominant all over the field at this stage. Jake Foley and Jordan Conway scored two more points and we were leading by11 pts in the 28 min of the first half. However, we were guilty of a couple of bad wides and we were punished in injury time as Duagh scored a well take goal to take the lead down to 8 points at half time. St Pats 4-04 Duagh 2-02.

The second half began with Duagh scoring 3 points to reduce the lead to 5 points. The backs were under pressure as Duagh looked for a goal but John (Fizzy) Fitzgerald in goals was not going to be beaten and his full back line of Killian Quirke, Jack Quilter and Joe Costello were on top as they foiled several attempts at goal that Duagh so badly needed. David Kerins scored a point in the 42nd minute to put us up by 6 points and in the 44th minute, Massi scored a well take point before he was replaced due to injury by Simon Daughton who played very well when introduced into the game.

Duagh got two more points to reduce the score to 5 points. At this stage, Paul O Sullivan, Aidan O Halloran & Eoghan Dillane came into the game and worked hard for the team. As time ran out, Duagh went for broke but our defence stood strong to hold out for a great win. Both sides deserve great credit for a sporting match.

A special mention for our 8 minors who all contributed to the winning of the league and in doing so picked up a third county league medal in as many years. After the final whistle, Tim Murphy from the County Boardpresented Anthon O’Callaghan (Cpt) with the trophy who gave a wonderful speech as gaeilge thanking all involved in this great win.

Team-John (Fizzy) Fitzgerald, Killian Quirke, Joe Costello, Jack Quilter, Paudie O Connor, James Costello, Jake Foley(0-01), Jeffrey Foley, Anthon O’Callaghan (Cpt), Jordan Conway(0-01), Brendan Savage(1-00), Sean Dowling(0-01), Brandon Boyle(1-00), Thomas (Massi) O Sullivan (2-01), David Kerins (0-02), Simon Daughton, Paul O’Sullivan, Aidan O’Halloran & Eoghan Dillane.

Juvenile Academy:

Our Juvenile Academy returns this Sunday after a short summer break with games for our Under 6’s & Under 8’s versus Ballymacelligott in Blennerville. Unfortunately, the Ballymacelligott Under 10 team will be participating in a blitz elsewhere so our Under 10’s will have training as usual. All players to be at the clubhouse at 10:30am as normal.

Under 11’s:

Our u11’s had a busy week last week playing 2 matches. We played on Tuesday night at home against Kerins O’Rahillys but unfortunately we were well beaten by a stronger team. On Thursday night we travelled to Ardfert and we saw a much improved performance from our boys only beaten by 6 points.

Under 12’s:

Our u12’s travelled to Killarney last Wednesday to participate in a well organised blitz in Fitzgerald’s Stadium. Our boys played 3 games against Castlegregory, Currow and Kerins O’Rahillys making their club very proud winning 2 out of 3. All players were treated with an unexpected surprise when they met Kerry footballer Fionn Fitzgerald followed by a tour of Fitzgerald’s stadium. A fun day was had by all players and to finish off a great day, our players were treated to McDonalds.

Well done to all involved. Under 13’s: Our u13’s played away to Austin Stacks on Sunday evening but due to a shortage of players, we were beaten in the end. It was a very tight first half with both sides showing great skill and determination. Martin Savage opened our scoreline scoring 2 consecutive goals.

We failed to score any points in the first half while Austin Stacks were popping the ball over the bar. Before half time Cormac Lynch planted the ball into the net after receiving a great ball from Matthew Quilter.

Once again Niall McCarthy played a blinder in goals allowing no ball to pass him in the first half. Half time score Austin Stacks 0-11 St Pats 3-0. In the second half after missing numerous scoring opportunities, Danny Greaney lobbed the goal keeper scoring our fourth goal in the game.

We eventually saw our first point of the game from Martin and he followed this with another fine point. We scored very little in the second half and Matthew Quilter scored our final point just before the final whistle.

Team: Niall McCarthy, Samuel Abubaker, Brian Teahan, Kieran O’Donoghue, Ian McCarthy, David Faido, Martin Savage(2-2), Cathal Fitzgibbon, Cormac Lynch(1-0), Aaron O’Brien, Michael Doody, Danny Greaney(1-0) and Matthew Quilter(0-1).

Under 16’s:

Our Under 16’s had a good away win over Ballyduff in the Central League last week on a score line of 1-9 to 1-5. They are scheduled to play Fossa Wednesday night July 23rd at 7:30pm over in Fossa. All players to be at the clubhouse at 6pm.

COISTE NA NOG JOHN MITCHELS BLITZ

Pride of place this week goes to our U10 and U8 teams both of whom performed exceptionally well in the Annual John Mitchels Blitz held on Saturday last. Our U10’s qualified for the final with victories over Beale, Desmonds, Austin Stacks, Castlegregory and Keel. In the final they faced Ardfert in what turned out to be an epic encounter. Ardfert started the better and led at half time on a score of 0-3 to 0-2. An early second half goal by Ballymac saw them take the lead and with time almost up it was that goal that separated the sides. An Ardfert goal from a 13m free levelled the game and a draw looked likely.

However, our boys showed great heart and determination and worked the ball up the field and won a free from a scoreable position. This was duly pointed and great scenes of celebrations followed the final whistle. Final score Ballymac 1 – 6 Ardfert 1 – 5. Commiserations to a gallant Ardfert side who really pushed our lads all the way. Our U8 team also qualified for their final winning their group games against Beale, Desmonds, Beaufort and Austin Stacks, with just one loss to Keel.

The final against Miltown Castlemaine was another exciting affair with the Mid-Kerry boys coming out on top by 2 points. Our lads were disappointed in the end but it was a great achievement to reach the final. Many thanks to players, mentors, parents and supporters for making it such a memorable day. With such talented young players coming up the ranks, the future is bright for Ballymac football.

FAOI 16:

Our U16’s return to action this Wednesday night away to Castlegregory in Round 4 of County League. Our lads are unbeaten in Co. League and hope they can continue this form on the night. Best of Luck boys!

FAOI 14 : BALLYMAC 3-18 CURROW 2-9

Currow were visitors to Ballymac in this Castleisland District semi final last Friday evening. Ballymac were always in control here, James Carmody and Liam O’Brien with early points. Two points each from Daire Keane and Davy Rodgers extended our lead. Diarmuid and Dara Lynch were very busy each creating and scoring a goals.

Dylan McHugh also goaled and four more points from Daire Keane saw us lead at half time 3-10 to 0-4, Josh, Daire Leen, and Liam O’Brien being very effective supplying ball to the forwards. Cathal Dunne got the first point after the break but Currow were more determined in this half. Four points from, Daire Keane and Currow replied with four points.

A late surge by Currow got them two goals and a point, our final scores coming from Darragh Broderick, Tadhg Brick and Daire Keane who finished with a personal tally of eleven points. We are now into the final of this competition to be played at a later date.

FAOI 12

Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium opened its doors for all juvenile clubs in the province last week and Ballymac GAA Club were fortunate enough to be invited to participate in this mini-tournament. In what turned out to be a most pleasant and enjoyable day, Ballymac U-12s were pitted against Ballingeary of West Cork, Miltown/Castlemaine and Cordal.

It was an 11 aside game with space at a premium but our lads showed great endeavour and skill overcoming the challenges of Ballingeary and Cordal but just coming up short against a very impressive Miltown/Castlemaine side. All 18 squad members got valuable playing time on this pristine pitch and everybody enjoyed themselves to the full.

Team mentors, Tom Leen and Roland Rogers were very satisfied with the performances and conduct of the squad throughout the day.

Well done to all ! Foireann: Adam Joy, Adam Kelly, Darragh Leen, Jonathan Lowe, Ciarán Brosnan, Brian Cassidy, Cian Godley, Aidan O Brien, Andy Rogers, Garry Lynch, Kyle O Connor, Brian Godley, Ryan McHugh, Dylan O Connell, Cathal Culloty, Seán Horan, Thomas O Connor, Tim and Seán Pollman Damaan with Team Mascot Matthew Rogers.

FAOI 13

Our concluding game in the Coiste Thrá Lí U-13 League took place in Ballymac last Sunday evening against town rivals Austin Stacks. Knowing that victory would essentially guarantee us a place in the final, things didn’t work out the way we planned. Up against a massive and physical side, we struggled in many areas during the initial stages but gradually grew into the game with confidence growing.

Dylan Dunne Moriarty was a colossus for Ballymac with his selfless running and his perseverance ably assisted by brothers Aidan and Liam O Brien and David Rogers. Eoin Culloty in goals is improving with every outing and corner forward Diarmuid Lynch was a constant threat to the Stacks rearguard. Darragh Broderick picked off some good scores with Darragh Leen providing great support throughout. However, Stacks imposed their physicality and ran out easy winners in the end but not without a fight from all our lads.

Having already beaten Rahillys, Ballymac finished a creditable third in the top division which is no mean achievement. The boys will take great heart and confidence from the league campaign and with further training and know-how, this bunch of young lads can and will improve even further.

They all played with pride and distinction in the Ballymac colours and no doubt the team will feature in many more top division campaigns.

Squad : Eoin Culloty, Jack Tobin, Eoghan Leahy, Aidan O Brien, Cathal Culloty, Liam O Brien, Ciarán Brosnan, Dean Lenihan, Jack Sugrue, Cian Godley, Dylan Dunne Moriarty, Brian Cassidy, Darragh Lynch, David Rogers, Darragh Leen, Darragh Broderick, Diarmuid Lynch, Jonathan Lowe, Dylan McHugh, Eoghan Kenny. FAOI 13/14

After the brilliant buzz in Barna at the Féile Náisiúnta Peile, it has been ‘catch-up’ time in the Central League for both A and B teams.

(i) Since returning from Galway, we have defeated Annascaul/Lispole (8-11 to 1-11), we’ll play away to Mitchels on Thursday and follow with another ‘back’ game on Monday 21st against Laune Rangers. A win in either ‘back’ encounters should be enough to see us into the semi-finals. The Bs defeated Laune Rangers B (6-16 to 7-3) and played Ardfert on Monday 14th; a victory could also have our Bs in the semi-finals! Bheadh sin go deas!

(ii) While all this has been going on we also have A and B teams playing in the Under 13 Town Leagues. Our great and gallant Bs (all Under 12), playing the game of their lives, pushed the Ardfert Under 13s to the wire before coming up short! The As have played two local derbies against (a somewhat understrength) Strand Road and Na Gaeil in Division 1 and had comfortable wins in both.

Shane Bastible tormented The Blues’ defenders and netted three times. Liam ‘Star’ Nolan, who is back and playing at his brilliant best, made strong runs through the opposition’s defence.

Conor Myers’ constant movements dazzled the Strand Road defenders and Armin Heinrick disdplayed his great range of passing skills with pin point accuracy. Dara Barry-Walsh moved from his usual halfback position to the forward line and was rewarded with a fine goal for his hard work.

(iii) Our second derby of the week was in Killeen against a well-drilled group of players who had won their opening game against Ballymac.

However, our boys played superbly for the hour agus tháinig siad abhaile leis na pointí. Seán Quilter’s second half unstoppable shot (which a senior ‘keeper wouldn’t have saved) shivered the net. We witnessed another Bastible hat trick, this time from Joe who had the large Rockie supporters jumping for joy.

Not to be outdone by his older team mates, Niall Fitzmaurice got the score of the game at the end of a fantastic kick passing move involving 8 or 9 Rock players. As always David Oba was rock solid in goals and made two point blank saves. Craig Ó Tíocháin, Danny Draghici, David de Búrca and Laoch an Chluiche, Pádraic Linnane, were in unbeatable form. We, indeed, wrestled another wonderful win.

(iv) Next games will be on Sunday 20th when the Under 13As make a trip to Ballymac and the Bs will play v Naomh Pádraig i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile. Go n-éirí go geal libh, a leaideanna!

Under 13s

Our u13’s played against Ardfert on Sunday evening at home. Although we were beaten our boys looked very impressive on the night. We had alot of possession and we saw some lovely scores in the first half from Fergal O’ Brien and Patrick Dowling.

A special mention has to be given to Niall McCarthy who made some tremendous saves in goal and prevented us from been beaten by a much wider margin.

In the second half Patrick and Fergal continued to pop the ball over the bar. We eventually saw our first goal when Cormac Lynch caught a high ball, gave a short pass to Fergal who quickly passed it to Danny Greaney and Danny finished it off with a lovely soccer style goal.

Ardfert continued to score and before the final whistle Fergal rattled the net to make the final score St.Pats 2-7 Ardfert 3-12.

Future Star

Sean Ryle, one of the club’s greatest servants, was a proud dad two weeks ago as his son Evan came on as a sub for the Cork Minor Footballers vs Kerry in Pairc Ui Chaoimh two weeks ago. Evan’s first taste of football was sitting on his dad’s knee in a St Pats dressing room so we can lay a claim to him! Well done Evan and we wish you continued success in your career.

Senior Football
Keanes Supervalu Minor Football Championship Round 1 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14 Austin Stacks 1-06

The 1st Round of the Minor Championship was played in sometimes damp but otherwise perfect conditions in Strand Road on Wednesday evening last.

The Blues’ dominance led from midfield which they had a grip of for the entire match. They also worked tirelessly for possession and covered back and made runs forward when needed.

Austin Stacks were first to score in the first minute with a point from Seán Ryan and Kerins O’Rahillys first score came after two and a half minutes from a perfectly taken free from Ryan Carroll who took another shortly after. Kerins O’Rahillys dominated in midfield and had Cormac Coffey available to make sweeping runs forward but a goal from Ciarán Flanagan 10 minutes in left them playing catch up.

But following scores from Pádraig Griffin, Gavin O’Brien, Ryan Carroll, Gary Nolan, Gearóid Savage and Karl Mullins and with Austin Stacks (Timmy Murphy) only managing to get one point past defence left the half time score Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10 to Austin Stacks 1-3. Kerins O’Rahillys first half performance built on hard work from the likes Gavin O’Brien and Gary Nolan in particular which was the catalyst for victory.

Half forward Ryan Carroll was their key-man because he linked up effectively from midfield to attack and create chances and their defence worked tirelessly to keep Austin Stacks at bay. Kerins O’Rahillys started the second half as if they had something to prove with every man on the field playing at his best.

Link play proved essential and showed when we dominated all over. Key in the second half was the goal scored by Diarmuid O’Sullivan 18 minutes into the half to put 6 points between the sides. After this it was a case of adding on the scores and super sub Daniel Nix did just that by scoring 1-01 as did James O’Connor 0-01.

Scorers for Austin Stacks in the second half were Seán Fitzmaurice, Ferdia O’Brien and Seán Dukes but it was not enough to bridge the gap and the final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14 Austin Stacks 1-06.

Team: Jack Shortt, Derek Horgan, Darragh Ryan, Dylan Ronan, Donnagh Buckley, David Murphy, Cormac Coffey, Rory Doyle, Gavin O’Brien, Gary Nolan, Karl Mullins, Ryan Carroll, Gearoid Savage, Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Pádraig Griffin.

Scorers: Daniel Nix (1-1), Ryan Carroll (0-4), Diarmaid O’Sullivan (1-0), Gearoid Savage (0-2), Pádraig Griffin (0-2), Karl Mullins (0-1), Gavin O’Brien (0-1), Cormac Coffey (0-1) Gary Nolan (0-1) James O’Connor (0-1) Substitutes: Ben O’Neill (Ryan Carroll), Daniel Nix (Darragh Ryan), Pádraig Murphy (Pádraig Griffin) James O’Connor (Gearóid Savage)

Austin Stacks GAA News

Austin StacksSENIOR FOOTBALL

Austin Stacks 0-17; Rathmore 2-5

We qualified for our 6th Co. Championship quarter-final in a row by virtue of a six point win over Rathmore at Austin Stack Park on this Saturday evening (12th July).

We got off the blocks in brisk fashion with Kieran Donaghy winning the throw-in, who found Darragh O’Brien who was fouled, and Shane Carroll made no mistake from the resultant free after just 38 seconds.

Two minutes later Star won the kick-out, found Mikey Collins who was fouled on this occasion. This time Shane took a quick free to David Mannix who put over.

Then a minute later Mikey was the provider for Pa McCarthy to make one of his trade-mark runs upfield for a lovely point.
We seemed to be coasting at this stage but in the 8th minute Rathmore, against the run of play, were awarded a penalty, which they converted to level the game.

The next three points were from frees – two for us by Shane after fouls on Fiachna Mangan and Wayne Guthrie and one for Rathmore.

Then in the 18th minute Pa McCarthy made another brilliant run to score his 2nd point of the evening, bringing his scoring total in Senior football from his half back position, since first getting on the mark in 2008, to 3-15 (he scored a further 1-2 when playing a few games in the forwards last year).

Both sides again had a point each from frees (Shane again on target for us after another foul on Darragh O’Brien) and then in the 23rd and 24th minutes Rathmore put over their first two points from play to level the game for the second time.

From the kick-out they attacked again and Jonathan Conway had to make a brilliant tip-over safe to prevent a certain goal and Rathmore went into the lead for the first, and what turned out to be the only, time in the game. Two minutes later Wayne Guthrie pointed a free following a foul on David Mannix to level the game at half time (0-8 to 1-5).

We were in total control in the opening period of the second half, scoring six points without reply, one each from play by Shane O’Callaghan, Fiachna Mangan and Wayne Guthrie and three pointed frees from Shane Carroll. But like the first half we conceded a second goal in the 45th minute and Rathmore were back in the game again.

But this happened to be their only score of the half while we closed out the game with three more points by David Mannix, Shane Guthrie (forty five) and the final score from Darragh Long.

Not for the first time this season our defence was superb, holding the opposition to just four scores from play during the whole game, an opposition that scored fourteen points in their five points win over the Co. Champions, Dr. Crokes, in the first round.

It was good to see Paul Barrett back again, his first competitive game since the sad loss of his brother Trevor, last April.
The win also put us back on top of the Co. League as the game doubled up for our postponed round 4 game against the same opposition.

We are now on 11 points, one ahead of Dr. Crokes and Kilcummin with both Crokes and ourselves having a game on hand – we against Listowel Emmets and Crokes against Currow.

Team: Jonathan Conway, Ciarán O’Connell, Barry Shanahan (Capt), Fearghal MacNamara, Pa McCarthy (0-2), Conor Jordan, Greg Horan, Wayne Guthrie (0-3 – 1 free, 1 forty five), Kieran Donaghy, Michael Collins, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Fiachna Mangan (0-1), David Mannix (0-2), Shane Carroll (0-7 – 6 frees), Darragh O’Brien.

Subs used: Daniel Bohan (47m), Darragh Long (51m) (0-1), Paul Barrett (57m), William Kirby (59m), Eamon McAllen (63m).

MINOR FOOTBALL: Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14; Austin Stacks 1-6.

Our Minors did not have a good start to their Co. Championship campaign last Wednesday evening (9th July) in Strand Rd., going down to the home side in the opening round.

After a good opening period we had a poor 2nd quarter and trailed by four points at half time (0-10 to 1-3). Ciaran Flanagan was our goal scorer in the 11th minute.

Like the first half we had a reasonably good start to the second half, reducing the half time deficit to three at the end of the third quarter (0-11 to 1-5).

But like the first half we had a very poor final quarter while O’Rahillys had put the game beyond reach, scoring a further 2-3 in that period.

Team: Klaudio Dema, Niall Carroll-Cane, Colin Griffin, Dylan Harnett (Capt), Darragh Scanlon, Jack Morgan, Seán Hurley, Jack O’Shea, Calvin Foley, Timmy Murphy (0-1), Seán Ryan (0-1), Craig Corcoran (0-1 free), Seán Fitzmaurice (0-1), Ciarán Flanagan (1-1), Seán Dukes (0-1).

Subs used: Fergal Ryan (36m), Ferdia O’Brien (42m), Anthony Moynihan (55m), Jack Kenny (60m).
We now travel to Castleisland on this Tuesday evening (15th July) to play St. Kierans in round 2 (Losers Round). Throw in 7pm.

SENIOR HURLING

Our Hurling squad are organizing a Tournament to commemorate their late colleague, Trevor Barrett, to be held on the August Bank Holiday Saturday (2nd Aug). More details later.

In the meantime we still await to be notified of two outstanding fixtures for the semi final/final of both the County and South Kerry Leagues.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL

After a good win away to Mitchels in the opening round of the Town League our B team’s 2nd (.v. O’Rahillys) and 3rd (.v. Na Gaeil) round games did not go ahead due to a fixtures overlap with the Minors and U21s.
The semi final of the Co. League, against Rathmore, is fixed for Friday (18th July) evening but the next round of the MF Championship is also fixed for the same evening (assuming we get through to that round). Check Club Website for updates.

U21 FOOTBALL

We travel to Cahersiveen on this Wednesday evening(16th July) for a quarter final Co. Championship clash against South Kerry. Throw in 7pm.

FAOI 14
BALLYMAC 2-16 KNOCKNAGOSHEL/BROSNA 2-10

A well turned out pitch in Brosna was the venue for our first game in the Castleisland district league against Knock/Brosna. Scores were tied at two points each early on and when Brian Lonergan soloed through for a fine goal we were 1-4 to 0-3 ahead, two points each coming from Daire Keane and Josh.

Two more points from Dara Chawke and one each from James Carmody and Eoin Leahy extended our lead to 1-8 to 0-5 at half time.
We started the second half well.

Eoin Leahy getting 1-1, coupled with points form James, Dara Chawke and Davy Rodgers saw us lead 2-12 to 1-6 early on. Knock/Brosna then scored 1-3 without reply but Josh O’Keeffe scored three fine points and one each from Daire Keane and Dylan McHugh saw us win with a comfortable margin A feature of this game was interesting individual duals between Cathal Dunne, Daire Keane and their markers.

It was great to see Barry Lyons back in action making two valuable saves in the second half. We are due to play Currow in this competition next Friday evening in Ballymac.

Not to be out done the U6 boys were in spectacular form with Ray Horgan, John O’Shea, Aidan Brennan, Aran Crean, Ryan Harper and Jack Collins showcasing some great skill. Lee Wharton, Donncha Enright, Ciaran O’Connell and Con Sheahan caught the eye of their coach with their skills and dedication.

Well done to all. Academy will continue on Sunday at 11am.

MILE BUIOCHAS

Many thanks to the Ardfert U10’s squad and mentors for travelling to Ballymac to play our U10s. Those who impressed for Ballymac on the day were Padraic Heffernan, Evan Boyle, Tommy Palmer, Mark O Connor, Kieran Slattery and Alex Walsh. We also had a very good workout earlier in the week against Castlegregory and our thanks to them for travelling on the night.

COISTE THRÁ LÍ

The Coiste Thrá Lí U11 league begins in earnest this week. We are at home to Na Gaeil this Tuesday and at home to John Mitchells on Thursday evening both matches kick off at 6.30pm. Next week sees us away to Kerins O’Rahillys and Ardfert.

FAOI 13

Ballymac U-13s responded in the best possible manner to their opening round defeat against Na Gaeil a week ago with a comprehensive victory over Kerins O Rahillys in Rd 2 of the Coiste Thrá Lí U-13 League at Strand Road last Sunday evening.

Played in ideal conditions on a beautiful evening our lads turned the tables on a very talented Strand Road side with some fine expansive flowing football by all. With both sides missing a few regulars due to holidays and injury, those who stepped up to the mark for both teams acquitted themselves very well indeed.

Despite an early onslaught by Rahillys, our defence held firm with both Liam and Aidan O Brien in imperious form. ‘Keeper Eoin Culloty pulled off two top class saves as KOR threatened during the initial exchanges.

But Ballymac got a grip on the game with midfielders Brian Cassidy and David Rogers grafting hard and winning more possession and delivering some excellent foot passes to the inside forward line where the likes of Diarmuid Lynch, Cathal Culloty, Darragh Leen and Darragh Broderick posed a lot of problems for the home side.

Our defence remained resolute with Ciarán Brosnan, Jack Sugrue, Adam Joy and the impressive Cian Godley all repelling the Blues attacks.

There was some scintillating football played by both teams all throughout with Jonathan Lowe, Andy Rogers, Dean Lenihan all getting on the scoresheet. It was a very much improved display on the previous outing with everybody trying to do the right thing.

This victory means that a win over Austin Stacks will assure us of a place in the Town league final The management team of Mike Broderick and Roland Rogers were well pleased with the standard and quality of football. Well done to all involved ! Our final game is scheduled for this coming Sunday July 20th at home to Stacks with throw-in at 6pm. Training continues during the week.

Tralee Parnells :would like to thank Ballymacelligott GAA Club for the generous donation of playing fields, facilities and equipment for the U8/10 Camogie Blitz on July 12th. As a fledgling club, Parnells relies on the generousity of its GAA neighbours in the Tralee area; Ballymac stepped up without hesitation to lend support. Parnells would like to acknowledge Anthony Curran and Ger Collins. Particular thanks are due to Joanne Long, who gave up her Saturday morning to open the shop to serve refreshments to the attendees.

Churchill News

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Congratulations

To Mikey Brennan, who was a member of the victorious Kerry Junior team that defeated Cork in the Munster Final in Tralee last Wednesday evening, and to Ivan Parker and Eoin O’Brien who were on the Kerry Minor panel that defeated Cork in the Munster Final in Cork on Sunday.

Best of luck to you all in the All-Ireland Series.

Also Sean Hamilton gave a man of the match performance in the final playing for the North Kerry u-14s and Sean Donnellan reprented the club with the North Kerry u-15s.

Only for holidays the two Mortimers Sean and Jason would also have worn the green and gold at the weekend. This shows that with 7 Kerry players in one weekend how well our coaching is getting on.

Again a huge thanks to coaching officer Peter and all the coaches who give of their free time to make these players better.

Juveniles

U6s, U8s, and U10s training continues every Sunday at 11am in The Spa. We are getting great attendances to each session and the improvement in skill levels are very evident to all the coaches. Well done to all.

GAA Cúl Camps are on in Churchill this week and hopefully everyone that participates will have fun and get a chance to improve their skills even further under the expert guidance of Micheál Quirke.

The B team play Duagh on Friday the 11/07/14 @ 7.30p.m. in Duagh. This is a County semi-final and we would like to see all our supporters out in force.

The St. Brendans senior team play Dingle on Saturday evening in Austin Stacks Park at 6pm. Again your support would be great as if they win these they will be in the quarter final. This is a very important team as it gives our senior footballers the change to play in the Senior County Championship.

Crime

A spate of anti-social behaviour activity hit the village of Fenit last weekend again. Tyres were slashed on local people cars and Samphire lighthouse was wrecked with windows broken and a lot of damage to the inside.

This is not accecpable as this is a tourist amienty and could cost jobs while it is closed. It is also a navigation guide for boats intering and leaving the harbour and it could cost lives. They needed a boat to get out to this.

Rowing

Fenit rowing club are again proud to be hold the County Champinships for the second year in a row on Saturday July 28th.

Again this is due to thr great officers we have in the club and what a wonderfull venue Fenit is for all water sports. Bag packing will also be on in big Dunnes on Fribay and Saturday the 25th and 26th,so anyone that can spate an hour your help would be welcome. Any local kids wishing to take up rowing can call to see the lads who row every evening from 6-9 p.m.

Grants

Three local clubs got grants under the Sports Capital Programme.Tralee Rowing Clud got £21,000,Tralee Sailing Club, got £20,000 and Tralee Bay swimming Club got £9,000.Again this shows the great work be done by the officers of these clubs.

Some of the local children from Fenit that had just completed a week long sailing course in Tralee Bay Sailing School, Fenit. The children had a very enjoyable week making full use of the amazing facilities that the school has to offer. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful amenity as Tralee Bay Sailing School in our local area we should all try to make more use of it. Thank you to all of the brilliant Instructors and Commodore Richard Hurley for making it such an enjoyable week for all involved.
