PEIL FAOI 12: We were up with the lark last Sunday morning as over 30 players, together with a host of mentors and parents, headed for the capital and for the annual Kilmacud-Crokes U12 Blitz. In brilliant conditions, our boys left nothing at all in the tank as they gave of their very best on the hallowed pitches of UCD. (i) The Division 1 team came away victorious, repeating last year’s performance, winning against Kilmacud 1, Naas 1, St Colmcilles of Meath and drawing against St Peters of Dublin. A truly magnificent team display of the best of Kerry (and Rock) football! (ii) The Division 2 team had a series of close encounters before coming just short in the final against the hosts. Their never-say-die attitude was typified by Denis ‘Lazarus’ Brasil who , after looking down and out following an injury against Newtown Blues of Louth, arose to demand that he join the fray in the second half of the final against Kilmacud. Laoch den ard-scoth is ea Donncha Ó Breasail na Carraige!! A brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable day with excellent organisation, as always, by our most gracious hosts. All returned home to The Kingdom safely, happily and jaded!

PEIL FAOI 14: Our Under 14 boys had a brilliant week of football. (i) Ronan Mulrooney captained the Rock U14B team to a hard won 3-12 to 4-6 victory over Keel/Listry in the first of the Division 9A County League semi-finals on Friday night.

Played in front of a large home crowd in the Nuns’ Field, our boys got off to a great start and were 0-7 ahead mid-way through the first half helped by an early Dylan Cunningham goal. Adam O’Carroll and Thomas Derege dominated midfield and Ciarán Kavanagh dictated play from the halfback line as he swept up the breaks and provided several ‘assists’ to the forward division.

Keel/Listry came back near the end of the half to leave the score at 1-7 to 1-2 ag an mbriseadh; a crucial save by Shane Cotter prevented a narrower margin.Keel/Listry came roaring out of the blocks in the second half and landed a quick 2-1 to leave our lads 0-2 down and the Ciarraí Láir boys kept that pressure on us for the rest of the game.

A cool head from Man-of-the-Match Mark Lynch (who finished with 1-5) saw him spot an opportunity to lob the opposing ‘keeper and then he tagged on another point from the kick out. Then Dylan, on a counter attack, grabbed his second goal.

Mark put over a late free to give a 0-3 cushion but the remaining minutes were very nervous and Keel/Listry created several goal chances. A desperate and brave defence, led by Seán Heaslip and Jamie Horgan, held out and the final whistle blew with the Rockies hanging on to their 0-3 lead. The Rock boys are now in the final and eagerly await the winners of Laune Rangers v Crokes encounter.

Mouth-watering prospects! Well done, players and mentors. An fhoireann bhuacach: Shane Cotter; Jack Slattery, Jamie Horgan, Luke Flynn; Eamon Barry, Marc Carmody (0-1), Ciarán Kavanagh; Thomas Derege (0-1), Adam O’Carroll (0-1); Barry Nagle, Dylan Cunningham (2-1), Ronan Mulrooney (captaen, 0-1); Mark Lynch (1-5, 1 free), Tiernán O’Carroll (0-1), Jake O’Connor. Subs: Steven Conway (+31mins), David Slattery (+23mins), Seán Heaslip (+20mins). (ii) On Wednesday evening our A panel played Kilcummin in the Division 1 semi-final and, after a great 2nd half display, came out on top and qualified for the final.

Fair-play, a leaideanna agus a thraenálaithe! The big challenge for these young stars will be Keel/Listry and the game has been fixed for Killorglin this Friday (17th). Support welcome! (iii) To top off a fine week of football our A team, captained by the one and only Togor Silong, defeated Churchill in the Town League Final.

WAYNE’S WARRIORS: Another fine victory v Na Crócaigh by our senior footballers who are an inspiration to our younger players. Is the ‘top table’ in sight?

UNDER 15 LiveLife Tournament: The U15 Rock boys who played in the recent Dónal Walsh LiveLifeTournament: Conchúr Ó Ciarba, Donnacha Mac a’tSaoir, Dara Ó Muircheartaigh, Conchúr Ó Duagáin, Síomón Ó Ciardha, Cian Ó Duilleáin, Cadan Ó Mathúna, Éanna Ó Cathail, Jack Ó Dúill, Josh Ó Loingsigh, Cillian Litchfield.

PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Our Central League A champions: Ben Quilter, Cian Dillane, Ruairí O’Connell, Brian McElligott, Josh Lynch, Joey Nagle, Evan Foley, Dean Rusk, Armin Heinrick, Gavin Slattery, Shane Bastible, Conor Horan, Gearóid Kilgallen, Donnacha Sayers, James Charles, Cillian Litchfield, Darragh Moriarty, Seán Collins, Enda Cahill, Donnacha Fox, Dylan Hurley, Cadan O’Mahony, John Duggan, John Feely, Conor Kirby, Simon Carey, Jack Doyle, Kevin Barry, Jordan Kissane. A great great performance from The Rock U16s and they proudly lifted this year’s Central League Division 1 Trophy. The young men of the Austin Stack Club defeated Laune Rangers in a very entertaining game watched by a fairly large and enthusiastic crowd in Austin Stack Park.

The won on a scoreline of 4-9 to 1-10. Among the Rock stars were Ben Quilter sa chúl, Ruairí O’Connell, Joey Nagle. Josh Lynch, Armin Heinrich agus Laoch an Chluiche, Dean Rusk. (ii) Our Division 3 game v Churchill was played on Wednesday evening last. This was our last game of this year’s Central League and, despite having preformed very well, we came up a little short against Churchill. Roll on the County League! (iii) Training for the next few weeks will be on Wednesdays with a starting time of 6.15pm (18:15). (iv) Our Seven U16 lads who are part of the North Kerry Development Squad: Ruairí Ó Conaill, Dean Rusk, Shane de Bastábla, Ben Cuiltéir, Joey de Nógla, Armin Heinrich and Jordan Ó Cíosáin.

MIONÚIR: ‘Well done’ to Adam Ó Corráin agus Lúcás Chester on being an important part of Kerry’s minor victory v Cork.

PEIL FAOI 12: We are proud to state that we had three Under 12 Rock teams in action last weekend….ní beag an méid sin! (i) Sunday evening saw the visit of Ballymac for the final matches of Divisions 1A. B/mac had proven to be a quality outfit! Our A team knew that they faced a big task against the previously unbeaten visitors and would have to be at their very best to win the game and, as a result, the County League.

Right from the throw in, our warriors produced a top class display of heads up football, support play, leadership and excellent tacking. When the final whistle blew, the Black’n’Amber lads were in front on a scoreline of 3-16 to 0-3.

It would be unfair to pick out any single player as this was a great team performance and it was our third successive county final victory (Division 1A, phase 1). (ii) Ballymac Bs also arrived for the final matches of Divisions 1B. Our B team produced a great display of heart, resilience and their now customary “never-say-die” attitude.

Well behind after a slow start, they fought their way back into it and only had a kick of a ball separated the teams at the finish…5-9 to 4-9. Fííúúú! Mighty!

(iii) Monday saw our Division 9 team visit An Daingean – many thanks to all parents who brought their boys out….great to see such huge numbers. Despite the locals coming out in front, the motto of “the result doesn’t matter, it’s how we play“ was foremost in everybody’s mind and everyone gave it his very best, trying his heart out to the end mar is dual don Stacach!! (iv) On Sunday next (12th) everyone will be heading to Kilmacud Crokes for their blitz – 4 teams from every province, with the Rockies fielding 2 squads. Go n-éirí go geal libh, a bhuachaillí na Carraige!

RULES for RECREATIONAL ROUNDERS: Ever think of trying that other GAA game….rounders? See rules under ‘Lá na gClubanna’ on www.austinstacks.ie. Have a go! It’s fun!

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) Our As (Division 1) travelled to Kilcummin on Wednesday (1st) and came home with maximun points in the County League. Sin 5 as 5! Éacht! This fine result puts our boys on top of the ladder and ensures home advantage in the semi-final. (i) The U14B team, with a strong performance in Keel, secured top spot in the league phase of Division 9A and secured home advantage for the County League semi-final.

After Captain Dylan Cunningham won the toss and opted to play with a strong breeze, the team gave a strong attacking display and scored 5-11 in the first half. Keel/Listry battled back in the second half against a strong Rock defence but were unable to bridge the gap. The match finished with The Rock boys ahead…5-21 to 3-4.

An-bhua ar fad ar fad! Team: Stephen Conway (1-1); Jack Slattery, Jamie Horgan, Roan Grattan; Éamonn Barry, Daniel Kirby (0-3), Seán Heaslip; Paddy Lane (0-2), Ben Murphy; Barry Nagle, Ciarán Kavanagh (2-2), Ronan Mulrooney (1-0); Dylan Cunningham (1-1), Tiernán O’Carroll (1-1), Jake O’Connor (1-1). Subs: Shane Cotter (+30mins); David Slattery (+15mins); Mark Lynch (+13mins; 0-6 (0-2f)); Thomas Deregee (+10mins; 1-2). The semi-final will take place this Friday (10th) at 7pm in Connolly Park. Good luck, boys! Support welcome!

DÓNAL WALSH TOURNAMENT: Our U15 boys took part in the Dónal Walsh LiveLife Tournament in Strand Road last Saturday. We were in a group with Strand Road, John Mitchels and Father Caseys.

We won one of our group games and came up a little short on the other two but enjoyed our day and showed some great skill and pride in the jersey during all our games. All our lads played well on the day and a special mention goes to Conor Kirby who played in goals for the three games.

Painéal: Enda Cahill, Simon Carey, Cian Dillane, Jack Doyle, Josh Lynch, Cillian Litchfield, Conor Duggan, Conor Kirby, Darragh Moriarty, Donnacha Sayers, Cadan O’Mahony. Well done, lads.

PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Congratulations to our Under 16 braves who achieved a fine victory with a great performance v Laune Rangers in the Division 1 Central League Final i bPáirc Aibhistín de Staic on Monday last.

It was a very entertaining game and was watched by a sizeable crowd. The encounter produced an outstanding team display by the young men of The Rock as well as some brilliant individual performances from Ben Quilter in goals, Ruairí O’Connell, Joey Nagle, Josh Lynch, Armin Heinrick and a Man-of-the-Match performance from Dean Rusk.

The Final final score: 1-10 to 4-9. What excitement as our Under 16s followed the example of Wayne’s (Senior) Warriors! Winning can be contagious and infectious! Well done, players and management.

MANA CLG: ‘We all belong here at this place at this time. We belong not because of who we are are or where we’re from. Being here means belonging. Belonging means knowing that we’re part of a community, a community that has a place for all, in which potential is nurtured, in which individuals become teams that honour the legacy of those who went before and strive to build a legacy of our own.

Some of us play. Some of us used to play. Some of us never played. We belong. Belonging means having a voice, means being able to say what we think is right, being blistened to. Belonging means respecting each other, means being there for each other on the pitch. Off the pitch, belonging means rolling up our sleeves and doing what needs to be done.

We all belong, whether it’s our first day or our hundredth year. We all belong here because this place belongs to us all….OUR GAA…where we all belong. We are family!’ And that’s our GAA philosophy. Sea, sin ár bhfealsúnacht.

PEIL FAOI 12: (i) Our boys challenged Laune Rangers and Legion:
(ii) They played away v Tuosist in the County League (Division 9) on Sunday last (April 28th) and, after an exciting affair, our lads emerged………..

U12: There were excellent performances from all in this group in recent days with away matches to Laune Rangers (Div 1 and 1B) and Tousist (Div 9) and home to Legion , also in Division 9.

Beautiful weather and conditions were the order of the day when we travelled to Killorglin to play our old friends. Top class team play and skill saw the Black and Amber boys victorious in the Division 1A match on a score line of 5-17 to 2-8. A very tight match in the 1B encounter saw our hosts edging ahead at the final whistle 5-12 to 5-8.

A couple of days later , our Division 9 squad produced a magnificent display of heart and commitment, coming out on top again the Legion 2-14 to 2-2.

The same group then headed to Tuosist last Sunday evening for a great game against the  most accommodating and hospitable locals.

Finding Lauragh certainly proved a problem too far for Batty Bastable’s Sat Nav   (we hope he made it back to Tralee by the time of publication !) and we will put this down as the primary factor behind our reversal  – 4-14 to 5-7.

This weekend say the Division 1A and B squads in Connolly Park as we host Ballymac , with the well -thumbed passports of our Division 9 warriors ready for another stamping as we head for Dingle.

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) (a) Congratulations to our U14 Féile A winners. (b) Our As played in the 4th round of the County League at home v Laune Rangers on Wednesday (24th). After a tight 1st half the visitors led by aon chúilín amháin…1-5 to 1-6. Our team: Michael Tansley; Marc Carmody, Lúcás Ó Cathasaigh, Jamie Horgan; Pádraig O’Halloran, Colm de Brún, Seán Ó Muimhneacháin; Aaron Nolan, Togor Silong; Jamie Ó Spring é (captaen), Noah Townsend, Ronan Mulrooney; Damien Hogan, Adam O’Carroll, Marc Ó Loingsigh. PEIL FAOI 12: (i) Sunday night saw two excellent performances from our Black’n’Amber warriors as they hosted Dr Crokes in the second match of the Lee Strand County League. A strong breeze made conditions tricky for all players but, buoyed by the performance of the senior team a couple of hours earlier, every player gave of his very best from the first whistle. (a) The A squad produced an excellent display with a high level of work rate, support play and skill. We had 9 different scorers on the night and we came away with a 5-15 to 0-3 win. (b) The breeze was blowing straight down the Nuns’ field as our B team went into action and was a major factor in the encounter. Na Crócaigh, aided by same, were ahead at the small whistle but, following lots of positive encouragement from coaches Shane and Kieran during the break, our stalwarts came out a transformed Rock team for the second half. What a transformation! What a resurrection! Some great scores were notched from all angles as the deficit was reduced and the Killarney lads were overcome. The Rockies eventually prevailed on a 5-18 to 4-4 scoreline. A nice victory! (ii) Next weekend sees games against Laune Rangers and Legion and all are asked to maintain the excellent training attendance record.

PEIL FAOI 12: (i) The Lee Strand County League campaign began in Kenmare on Sunday evening last where our A and B teams were in action. We had a very large travelling party which was a credit to both parents and players. Excellent displays were the order of the day and everything that was learned in the training pitches over the past 3 months was put into practise by our warriors. The work rate and movement of our A team ensured that they were victorious against our hosts on a scoreline of 5-22 to 2-6. An-bhua go deo! Everyone, from cúl báire to corner forward, gave of their very best and they were a credit to the Black’n’Amber right from the first whistle. (ii) Our B team engaged in a titanic battle with their Kenmare counterparts right from the ‘off’ and the lead changed hands regularly. CORN AN RUISÉALAIGH: Comhghairdeachas le Damien McLoughlin and his CBS team on their fine victory in the Russell Cup competition. The Green had a great win in a brilliant game of football between two good teams. The four Rock lads played very well…..Josh Lynch dominated midfield, scored a fine goal and popped over three lovely points. Togor Silong and Enda Cahill (the late John Galvin’s nephew) kicked a point each in the forwards and Donncha Sayers (yes, son of Denis) was the very impressive leader of the full forward line and he scored four points. SCÓR NA bPÁISTÍ: Quiz Scór na bPáistí!
PEIL FAOI 14: (i) Suits Select TOWN League (Division 1): (a) ‘Well done’ to our A team
that played away v Churchill on the 18th and had a good victory. An scór:- AdeS A: 5-20;
Cnoc na hEaglaise: 3-7. Panel: Michael Tansley (captaen); Seán Heaslip, Lúcás Ó
Cathasaigh, Seán Ó Muimhneacháin; Daniel Ó Ciarba, Colm de Brún; Thomas Deregee;
Aaron Ó Nualláin, Togor Siloem; Jamie Ó Sé, Noah Townsend, Paidí Ó Laighin; Séimí Ó
hÓgáin, Luke Mac Gearailt; Liam Ó Morónaigh. Fir ionaid: Marc Ó Cearmada, Rónán Ó
Maolruanaidh.

It was great to see Damien Hogan returning from a long term injury and he
gave a Man-of-the-Match performance! (b) Our next challenge was the Suits Selects Town
League final that was played on Sunday last (24th) v the winners of the Ardfert/Churchill
match. Our boys played fine football and gave a great account of themselves.
(ii) Suits Select Town League (Division 2): (a) Our B team took on the unbeaten Division 2
league leaders, Na Mistéalaigh B, on the 18th. The game was played in the ‘new’ Chamfers.
This strong John Mitchel Club side dominated from the start, scoring two early scores which
placed us on the defensive go luath sa chluiche.

Valiant defending, under intense pressure and
under the strong leadership of team captain Jamie Horgan, kept the Mitchel Club boys’ attack
to a single point for the rest of the first quarter.

Eventually, however, the effort took its toll
and, in the second quarter, we saw our opponents build a comfortable lead (that was very
uncomfortable for us!). Mark Lynch gave us a ray of shunshine le dhá chúilín ghleoite to
open our account. Following some positional switches, our lads started the second half
strongly and kept the JMC defence under pressure for most of the third quarter le dhá phointe
dheasa eile ach…ach…but our shooting left us down.

We were unable to generate the
necessary scores despite all our pressure on the Green’n’Gold defenders. Unfortunately for
us, the Mistéalaigh, after weathering intense Rock pressure, broke the seige, attacked our
hardworking defence and popped in another goal. Faraor géar, ochón agus mo bhrón, they
followed the goal with a string of points as our braves struggled mightily to save the
‘Alamo’!!

Best for The Rock on the day was our captain and MOTM, Jamie Horgan, who
courageously led by example and never threw in the towel! His great example of tenacity,
determination and fous was closely followed by Jack Slattery, Pádraig O’Halloran, Ciarán
Kavanagh and Mark Lynch. Despite a tough day at the office, our boys kept trying to the end
• and their effort and never say die attitude was a credit to them. With some more work on the
skills, boys, we will improve and will strongly and confidently challenge the best!! Beidh lá
eile ag an bPaorach!

An fhoireann: Steven Conway; Jack Slattery, Jamie Horgan (captaen),
Luke Flynn; Éamonn Barry, Roan Grattan, Ciarán Kavanagh; Adam O’Carroll, Pádraig
O’Halloran, Jake O’Connor, Dylan Cunningham, Barry Nagle; Shane Cotter, Tiernán Carroll,
Mark Lynch. Super sub: David Slattery. (b) Our B Boys played away v K-O’R last week in
horrible conditions. Strand Road started well and led by 0-10 at half-time…4-1 to 0-3. In the
second half, we scored 0-6 to their 0-1 but, faraor agus ochón, that wasn’t enough for a Rock
victory!

Scór deiridh: 4-2 to 0-9. Foireann na Carraige: Steven Conway; Seán Heaslip, Jack Ó
Slatara, Éamonn de Barra; Daniel Ó Ciarba, Barry Nagle, Ben Murphy; Ronan Mulrooney,

Sections include guidance on maintaining appropriate levels of behaviour when working with young people, how to promote the Code and deal with breaches of the Code, useful guidance on recruiting coaches and managers for underage teams, how to plan away trips, the club child safeguarding statement, dealing with bullying, social media guidance and how to report concerns or allegations. ONLY 32 ALL-IRELANDS? It was decided several years ago to plant a tree in The Green, our town park, in memory of each of Kerry’s All-Ireland victories. The straight line of trees stretches from the Presentation School gate to the rose garden. However, the plan has, seemingly, been forgotten! The trees ‘tell’ us that The Kingdom has won 32 All-Irelands from 1891 to 1997! 6 trees are ‘missing’?

Other results: Grúpa Ceoil…Fionnúig (Blennerville also performed well in this competition); Bailéadghrúpa…Gleann Fleisce (Club Naomh Pádraig were so close); Léiriú…Na Gaeil; Aithriseoireacht…Keel; Set/Figure Dance…An Spá. The Rock players on The Green team: Seán Cuiltéir, Conchúr Ó Mír, Eoin Ó Cearúill, Dónal Ó Ruairc, Tomás Ó Fearaíl, Ben Cuiltéir, Jordan Ó Cíosáin, Armin Heinrick. 40 BLIAIN: Congrats to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn on being 40 years on the road. Comhghairdeachas leis na leanaí agus leis na múinteoirí a chuir an-thaispeántas ceoil, amhránaíochta, filíochta agus cainte os comhair an domhain mhóir trí Raidió na Gaeltachta an tseachtain seo caite. I measc na gcainteoirí bhí Ruairí Ó Loingsigh who wasn’t shy about telling the listeners on the www that his total allegience is to the Black’n’Amber of The Rock!

MULLACH AN LEACHTA: Mullach an Leachta (anglicised as meaningless and hard to pronounce ‘Mullanalaghta’) is half a parish in the northeastern part of County Longford. The correct translation of its name is ‘Hill of the Grave-mound (or Standing Stone or Gravestone).’ The club’s patron is Naomh Columba.

Lough Gowna, a great fishing lake, is at its western side and the River Eirne is its northern boundary. The other half of the parish, Scrabby (Screabach), is in County Cavan and in Ulster. Over 3,200 people lived in Mullach an Leachta before the Great Famine (1845-48) but now it has less than 500 people.

Having defeated Kilmacud – Na Crócaigh (a club with a membership of over 4,000) to gain a place in the All-Ireland semi-final, they’ll have to face the might of another Croke Club….Crócaigh Chill Airne! Gaelic football, ní nach ionadh, is the main sport in the area. Bunaíodh an club sa bhliain 1889….tá sé 129 bliain d’aois. Maroon and white are its colours.

The club was successful in the 1940s and 1950s and won county titles in ’48 and ‘50. It has come to prominence again in recent years, winning the senior championship and league in 2016, 2017 and 2018…three-in-a-row…a remarkable achievement for an area with such a small population.

They are now senior champions of Leinster, the first ever Longford club to be in that position. The All-Ireland club semi-final is a game to which all GAA followers look forward. A Chrócaigh Chill Airne, bígí an-aireach!! (The late country music singer, Larry Cunningham, was a native of the ‘Hill of the Grave-mound’).

(ii) Other results: Léiriú…Na Gaeil; Bailéadghrúpa…Naomh Pádraig; Ceol…Naomh Pádraig; Scéalaíocht/Aithriseoireacht…Na Gaeil. Not a dancer in sight from the whole Greater Tralee GAA Area! SCÓLÁIREACHTAÍ GAELTACHTA: Now is the time for club members to plan for a Irish language course in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. The GAA (district, county and provincial levels) provides financial assistance. Contact should be made with club officials immediately after Christmas…to avoid disappointment!

BLIAIN NA GAEILGE: Táimid fós i mBliain na Gaeilge. Ná dearmadtar an cúpla focal?

CILL MOCHUDA-CRÓCAIGH-BENBURB: In 1966, following representation to the coiste of the Kilmacud Club from parishioners and from members of the nearby Croke Hurling Club, it was agreed to hold discussions with a view to the Croke Hurling Club joining Kilmacud en bloc. This was agreed at a general meeting of both memberships. Bhí an dá thaobh sásta. The Croke Hurling Club had been founded in 1922-23 by Michael Curran, who had been the groundsman in Croke Park, and it had achieved many notable successes down through the years.

Joining up with Kilmacud seemed a good option. The Croke Club had only one team playing in the senior league at the time and, like a lot of single team hurling clubs, were having difficulty attracting players. They had no juvenile hurlers. (A mirror, perhaps, of our own club).

At that time big suburban clubs were being formed and Kilmacud had a very large catchment area to call on. As there was now a senior hurling club in Kilmacud, the young players had a targe….to represent their club at senior level.

The merger was an instant success and the club won the Senior Championship that year defeating the St Columba Club of Crumlin in the final. Fás aon oíche, a déarfadh duine! Bhí Na Crócaigh – Cill Mochuda ar an mapa iománaíochta! Their footballers are, at present, preparing to play the football champions Longford in the Leinster final.

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: The Under 6/8/10 end-of-year medal presentation ceremony will take place on Sunday December 9th in the clubhouse. Beidh Daidí na Nollag i láthair, a deirtear. We will have a visitor from the North Pole on that day.

BLIAIN NA GAEILGE: Táimid fós i mBliain na Gaeilge. Ná dearmadtar an cúpla focal?

CILL MOCHUDA-CRÓCAIGH-BENBURB: It’s fitting to write about a Dublin club that has strong playing and competitive contact with our own club per visits, tournaments, etc. Cén club? This is the story of three GAA clubs becoming one club! (i) A club was founded in Kilmacud Parish, South-East Dublin, by a group of parishioners who were led and encouraged by two local priests, Fr Robert Walsh and Fr Martin Ryan. This happened 59 years ago in 1959. (1959 was the year that the Sam Maguire Cup was left behind in Croke Park after an All-Ireland victory v Galway! Imagine! Ask Eddie Barrett how the cup was brought ‘home’!)

The first public meeting took place on February 12th in the St Laurence Hall where Stillorgan Shopping Centre now stands. Fr Robert Walsh was chairman of that meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to see what local support was there for the setting up of a GAA Club in the area. Fr Walsh stated that “the time was overdue to provide facilities for boys to play games and to encourage the spirit of nationalism symbolised by the GAA”. Toradh an chruinnithe sin? About 50 people fully agreed with and endorsed the idea and, a month later, the first general meeting of the club was held.

It had an attendance of over 60 people. A collection of one shilling per person was made and the new club had a ‘kitty’ of £3. (£1 = 20 shillings; £3 = 60 shillings). It was agreed that the club colours would be green and white.

These colours were later changed to the more distinct purple and gold, the colours of the local Scoil Lorcáin (St Laurence). The necessity for a GAA club in the parish came about because of the great work being done in that local school by beirt mhúinteoirí, Seán Ó Braonáin agus Mícheál de Búrca. Laistigh de bhliain amháin, within a year, they had U13, U15, U16 and minor football teams AND, in hurling, they had U13, U15 and junior teams. That was progress agus dul chun cinn an-mhór!

In 1963 they purchased a 6.5 acre ‘permanent home’ and two years later the adjoining Glenalbyn House was bought. Cill Mochuda was on the GAA map! (ii) In 1966 another giant step was taken when discussions took place with an nearby all-hurling club called Na Crócaigh! Can you see where the narrative is heading? (ar leanúint / to be continued).

SCÓLÁIREACHTÍ GAELTACHTA: Now is the time for club members to plan for a Gaeltacht summer ‘holiday’ in 2019! The GAA can provide financial assistance. Contact should be made with club officials immediately after Christmas…to avoid disappointment! Ná cuir do leas ar cairde – cairde go lá cairde go geo….don’t procrastinate!

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: The highlight of the season, the Under 6/8/10 medal presentation ceremony and cóisir, will take place on Sunday December 9th in the clubhouse. Breaking news – we’ve just heard that the man with the big red coat, red cap, black boots, feasóg mhór fhada bhán and a big bag will be in attendance!! Ócáid iontach a bheidh ann, LCD! The Cruaghoirt will rock to the sound of ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Rudolf the Red-nosed Raindeer’!

SCÓR: The Greater Tralee District Scór na nÓg competitions will be held before December 2nd and the county finals before December 15th. Age: under 17 on the 1st January 2019. A group of dancers, a storyteller/reciter, a 4-person quiz team, a ballad group and a musical group are required to represent the Austin Stack Club. Does The Rock have the talent? Never venture, never win!

NA PIARSAIGH (contd): The Na Piarsaigh Club won its first trophy by winning the Cork City Junior Hurling title in 1947…only 71 years ago. Success at county level followed with the Junior title in 1953. Their first Senior Hurling title was won in 1990 and they had subsequent wins in 1995 and 2004.

They were the Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Hurling ‘sevens’ winners in 1992. In 2006 the club’s Under 14 hurlers won the All-Ireland Christy Ring Trophy for a record sixth time.

In 2006 the clubs Under 13 hurlers won the Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland title for the second year in a row. Famous Cork hurlers include: Tony O’Sullivan (holder of 5 All Star Awards), Seán Óg Ó hAilpín (3 All Stars), John Gardiner, Setanta Ó hAilpín, Roger Tuohy, Christopher Joyce.

PEIL FAOI 15: The Austin Stack Club U15s are the Bordcheantar Thrá Lí Champions for 2018. They had a fine 5-11 to 2-9 victory over Ballymac. They bounced back from a defeat by the same opposition in Ballymac a week earlier.

Shane Bastible was back to his best….from injury….and he lined out to great effect at centre forward. Donnacha Fox, Joey Nagle and Brian McElligott commanded the back line well but it was the high fielding display of Armin Heinrich that caught the eye. He and Dean Rusk fed high flying forwards Jordan Kissane, Gavin Slattery and Donnacha Sayers throughout the encounter and James Charles was also among the goal scorers. Gearóid Killgallon, Josh Lynch and Ruairí Ó Conaill also made some telling contributions.

With rock steady in goals our boys ran out easy winners agus b’é an captaen, Eimhín Ó Foghlú, a d’ardaigh an corn. Panel: Eimhín Ó Foghlú, Liam Ó Cearmada, Cian Ó Duilleáin, Éanna Ó Cathail, Brian Mac Eileagóid, Ruairí Ó Conaill, Gearóid Killgallon, Seán Collins, Josh Lynch, James Charles, Gavin Slattery, Donnacha Fox, Jordan Kissane, Shane Bastible, Donnacha Sayers, Armin Heinrich, Dean Rusk, Joey Nagle, Cillian Litchfield, Caydon O’Mahoney.

CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ (Coláistí na Mumhan): (i) Bhí bua ollmhór ag Meánscoil Chnoc an tSeabhaic v Cill Orglan (ISK)….6-13 in aghaidh 0-9….i gComórtas na Mumhan (Corn Uí Mhuirí). Lucht na Carraige ar an bpainéal: Donncha Mac Mathúna, Mícheál Ó Gadhra, Adam Ó Curráin, Dara de Barra-Breathnach, Pádraig Ó Lionnáin, Craig Ó Tíocháin, Séamus Ó Coigligh.

Next game: they’ll take on The Sem on Wednesday 28ú Samhain. (ii) The Green dream team will challenge Coláiste Chríost Rí on Tuesday 27th November. A victory will allow the CBS lads to progress in the competition. Mura mbuann siad, beidh siad ar an gcarn aoiligh…among those who ‘also ran’!! ‘Mura mbuafam, suathfam!’ mar a dúirt Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé.

CORN UÍ SHÚILLEABHÁIN (Coláistí Chiarraí): The Mounthawk boys were unlucky in the Corn Uí Shúilleabháin Cup competition! They lost on score difference by a mere 0-3….trí chúilín shuaracha!

That was particularily galling as they had already defeated Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. (ii) The Green are also out of the Corn Uí Shúilleabháin race. Chailleadar v An Ráth Mhór. Leaideanna na Carraige ar phainéal na Faiche: Eoin Ó Cearúill, Dónal Ó Ruairc, Seán Cuiltéir, Conchúr Ó Mír, Tomás Ó Fearaíl, Ben Cuiltéir.

BLIAIN NA GAEILGE: Táimid fós i mBliain na Gaeilge. Have you been inspired? An úsáideann tú an cúpla focal?

SCÓLÁIREACHTÍ GAELTACHTA: (i) Our club received two Gaeltacht scholarships this summer. These scoláireachtaí amounted to c.€340. Ní beag an méid sin! Thanks must go to the GAA (TDB, KY County Board, Comhairle na Mumhan) for this continued support for our club’s juvenile members/players and their supportive parents who understand the value of 3 beneficial weeks being spent in an Irish language enviornment. A special thanks to the county’s Scór Officer (Oifigeach na Gaeilge!), Christy Killeen, who played an important part in the process. Comhghairdeachas le Brian agus Éanna a chaith trí seachtaine i nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne. (ii) Now is the time to plan a Gaeltacht ‘holiday’ for summer 2019! Contact should be made with club officials immediately after Christmas…to avoid disappointment! Mura bhfuil agat ach pocán gabhair, bí i lár an aonaigh in am!!
PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: The much-looked-forward-to Under 6/8/10 medal presentation ceremony and cóisir will take place on Sunday December 9th in the clubhouse. Táimid ag súil go mór leis an ócáid thaitneamhach bhliaintiúil seo agus tá sceitimíní móra ar gach éinne!
SCÓR: Scór na nÓg is on the horizon and dancers, a storyteller/reciter, a 4-person quiz team, a ballad group and a musical group are required to represent the Austin Stack Club. The Tralee District Scór will be held before December 2nd and the county finals before December 15th. Age: under 17 on the 1st January 2019. Never venture, never win!

PEIL FAOI 11: The Dee O’Leary Tournament victors are still basking in the glory of their fine achievement! An painéal buacach: Rónán Ó Cearúill (captaen na foirne), Eoghan Ó Murchú, Liam Ó Conaill, Donncha Ó Breasail, Gabriel Nosidlak, Ben Ó Murchú, Naode Derege, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, Leon Ó Conchúir, Jay Ó Conchúir, Max Nosidlak, Jake Ó Cearmada, Jack Duigín, Cormac de Bastábla, Ryan Ó Drisceoil. The games were played at Na Piarsaigh Club in Cork.

NA PIARSAIGH (Corcaigh): In 1943 a group of idealistic young schoolboys founded Cork’s Na Piarsaigh. These young men had a great love for Irish national culture and games. They felt that existing clubs, and indeed the GAA itself, were not aspiring to the founding ideals of the Association. In choosing a name for the club, the members sought one which would reflect their aims and ideals. Pádraig Mac Piarais, it was felt, because of his underlying love of Ireland and all things Irish, reflected those ideals admirably.

Thus the name ‘Na Piarsaigh’ (‘The Pearses’) was adopted. A set of geansaithe (black and amber!!) was acquired. The symbolic red hand of Ulster with severed thumb was selected as the club crest after careful consideration. (Did you know that?) The red hand represents Ireland, the severed thumb the six north eastern counties. Their thinking was that when Ireland would be reunited the thumb would again rejoin the fingers to create a strong and useful hand! Spéisiúil! The newly formed club, as part of its policy, decided to conduct its affairs as far as possible through the medium of Irish. Indeed, the policy extended to the field of play where the players addressed one another in the native tongue. So novel was this approach to GAA affairs that it led to a certain amount of resentment amongst other clubs.

The national outlook was then in such a state during what is termed the ‘Emergency’ (WW II) that any willingness to promote Irish language culture generally met with strong opposition. An-spéisiúil!

PEIL FAOI 15: We earned a good win v Ballymac in Ballymac on Sunday last in the Bordcheantar Thrá Lí Football Competition.  We bounced back from our defeat to the same opposition a week earlier. It was so good to see Shane Bastible back from injury and he lined out at centre forward to great effect. Donnacha Fox, Joey Nagle and Brian Mac Eileagóid commanded the back line well but it was the high fielding display of Armin Heinrich that caught the eye. He and Dean Rusk fed our high flying forwards, Jordan Kissane, Gavin Slattery and Donnacha Sayers, with great passes throughout. James Charles was also among the goal scorers. Gearóid Killgallon, Josh Lynch and Ruairí Ó Conail also made some telling contributions. Cúl báire Liam Ó Cearmada was rock steady in goals agus bhí rith an ráis agsinn and captain Evan Foley lifted the cup.

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: The Under 6/8/10 medal presentation ceremony and cóisir will take place on Sunday December 9th in the clubhouse. Indeed, we look forward with great anticipation to this final big event of our long, successful and very enjoyable season! An occasion not to be missed!

PEIL FAOI 11: Saturday last saw (perhaps) the most travelled of all our Rock juvenile teams on the road again. The famed Dee O’Leary Tournament, hosted by Cork’s Na Piarsaigh Club, was on our agenda and the victors’ shining silverware was the target. The event has been held yearly since 1979 and the trophy is inscribed with a glittering roll of honour.

The names of Dublin’s Diarmuid Connolly and the O’Rourkes of Dromintee in Armagh are written in silver as former winning captains. Our boys were/are in good company!

After making their way to the final, our Rockie stars faced the might of the home club in strong wind and heavy rain! Not daunted by the elements and reserving their best display of the year until the final hurdle, our heroes proved much the stronger and, with an excellent display of skill, teamwork and tenacity, they won the day. What a day!

Ronan Carroll had the honour of hoisting the magnificent trophy and having his name join such an illustrious captains’ list. The magnificent fifteen satisfied and delighted players dined sumptuously, both at the club and in McDonalds…two meals for the price of one!!!

Agus cén t-ábhar mór cainte a bhí acu? These ambitious footballers talked a lot about….next year’s Under 12 campaign. Many thanks again to our great friends at Na Piarsaigh for their kind invite and excellent hospitality. The relationship between both clubs (this tournament and reciprocally the Lee StrandTournament) has been ongoing for over 30 unbroken years and is highly important to all in Connolly Park.

A great day of fun was enjoyed by all! An painéal buacach: Leon and Jay O’Connor, Max and Gabriel Nosidlak, Liam O’Connell, Ronan Carroll, Eoghan Murphy, Ben Murphy, Gavin Casey, Jake Carmody, Naode Derege, Jack Diggin, Cormac Bastible, Denis Brassil and Ryan O’Driscoll.

Many thanks to the travelling coaches and mentors and especially to Liam Lynch, Morgan O’Connell and Theo Diggin. Mórbhuíochas ó chroí to all players, parents and coaches who were with us throughout the season.

After a great Under 11 season of brilliant football, with trips to tournaments in Kilmacud, Glanmire and Na Piarsaigh (founded in 1943), as well as a plethora of Under 12 excursions, the curtain closes on a busy and enjoyable year. We hope to see everyone again in a short few months when brighter days will be lengthening and luscious green grass will be growing in the cruaghoirt (hard fields) of Connolly, The Bishop’s and The Nuns’ fields!!

PEIL FAOI 15: Our SuperTouch footballers are still basking in the sunshine of a great win in Ionad Barr Feabhais na gCoirríní (Currans). Ár bpainéal buacach: Armin Heinrich, Dean Rusk, Ben Cuiltéir, Brian Mac Eileagóid, Cian Ó Duilleáin, Jordan Ó Cíosáin, Séamus Mac Cathail, Seosamh de Nógla, Gearóid Mac Giolla Ghannáin, Eimhín Ó Foghlú, Seán de Bastábla, Donnacha Mac a’ tSaoir, Conchúr Ó hÓráin, Josh Ó Loingsigh, Donncha Ó Sionnaigh. And these boys are not finished yet! The final competition of the year will be the prestigious Under 15 Tralee Town Championship. Tá trófaí/corn ag feitheamh linn! Ar aghaidh linn, a leaideanna!

CAID FAOI 16: We challenged Ballymac in the Bordcheantar Thrá Lí Tournament (Goup 1) decider in the Strand Road Field on Sunday last. Níorbh é ár lá é!! We congratulate a gallant Ballymac team that defeated us. Our boys led throughout the game but, faraor géar agus ochón ó, were overtaken when it mattered most….in the final moments. ‘Hard luck’ to our boys who battled bravely and brilliantly ó thosach go deireadh an chluiche. ‘Well done’ to our dedicated mentors….Colm Mangan, TJ Sheehan, John Chester and Armin Heinrich on a topsy-turvy year….thuas seal, thíos seal….in which we won the Central League and came up just short in the County and Town Leagues. ‘Ní fál go haer é’, mar a dúirt Jimín Mháire Thaidhg! Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach!

SCÓR: Scór is ón the horizon! Spéis ag éinne?

AUSTIN STACKS NOTES OF 29/10/2018 FOR TRALEE TODAY.

BOBBY MILLER: One of the great names of the Rock passed away peacefully on Wednesday last (24th Oct) at the age of 86. As a footballer Bobby Miller first made his name with his schools teams in the mid forties. He was just 15 years old when he played Minor Football with his beloved Stacks in 1947. The following year he was on the Kerry MF team and won three Munster Final medals in 1948, 1949 and 1950. He crowned a wonderful career at Minor level when winning an All Ireland title also in 1950 along with fellow Rockies Kevin Barry, Pa Fitzgerald and Paddy O’Donnell.

After that he played for 10 consecutive seasons (1950-1959) with the Rock Senior Footballers and came close to winning a Co. Championship title in 1952.

When he retired from footballer he kept his close connection with the Rock, residing there all his life and also running a very successful business in Upper Rock St. for many years.

Bobby was predeceased by his wife Mary and son John. We extend sincere sympathy to Maura, Robert, Ann, Aileen and Cathy and to all his extended family and friends.

SYMPATHY:  Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently – Kevin McGreevy, Mounthawk and formerly Workingham (UK); Nicky Fitzgerald, Clahane, Ballyard and Fitzgerald’s Garage, Manor West; Rita Griffin (nee Brosnan), Quill St.; and Diane Falvey, Bray (Co. Wicklow) and formerly Rock Street.

BAG PACK:  Austin Stacks Ladies Club Fundraising bag pack takes place in Garvey’s Supervalu this Friday & Saturday Nov 2nd & 3rd.  Urging everyone in the club to please support their ladies club.  Remember the Ladies club do not receive any funding and the costs associated with purchasing footballs to covering referee fees must be raised by the players themselves.

A NIGHT OF MEMORIES: The Night of Showband Memories organized and compered by Francie Breen which took place in the Clubhouse on Bank Holiday Sunday Night (28th Oct) was a resounding success. Thanks again to Francie and to everyone else who helped run the event and of course to all those Showband aficionados who showed that they are getting better with every similar outing.

CO. BOARD: The Co Board is organising a programme aimed at preparing members to get involved with Senior Club sides in coaching and/or management. They will be running 4-5 workshops during this month of  November covering wide range of aspects – session and season planning; basic strength and conditioning; games-based coaching; video analysis; team tactics and more –  providing people with requisite experience and knowledge to feel confident enough to get involved with senior teams. Provisionally the following dates are fixed; Monday nights – Nov 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th. Venues and times to be confirmed. If interested please text Éamonn O Reilly at 0879677034.

HURLING: Ballyheigue 4-10; Austin Stacks 0-6.

Played under lights in Caherslee on last Friday evening (26th Oct) this first Intermediate Plate Final was won by Ballyheigue after a very good first half by the North Kerry boys at the end of which they led by 3-7 to 0-2. Daniel Teahan with our first point in the 3rd minute and one from Colm Ó Giollagáin after 20 minutes were our first half scorers.

We had a better second half, adding four more points to 1-3 for the opposition but it wasn’t to be our night on this occasion. Our second half scorers were Colm again with two more and one each from Peter O’Regan and Gearóid McCann.

While Ballyheigue put up a very good performance it didn’t help our cause that we were missing some players from our brilliant victory the previous week, most noteably our two chief scorers Paul Daly and Ronan Gilsenan who were sidelined through injury.

Team: Danny McGuire, Tadhg Meehan (Capt), David Walsh, Jonathan Downey, Eoghan McKivergan, Rory Forbes, Kieran McCaughley, Andrew Morrissey, Gearóid McCann (0-1), Colm Ó Giollagáin (0-3 – one free), Daniel Teahan (0-1), Thomas Meehan, Peter O’Regan (0-1), Terry Desmond.

Sub used: Daniel McCarthy (42m).

So a reasonably good season came to an end with the winning of the South Kerry JH Championship (just over a week ago) being the highlight of the year.

The night in Caherslee ended however with some nostalgia as one of the great servants of Stacks Hurling in any era announced his retirement after 23 brilliant seasons at the helm. Peter O’Regan was just 16 years old when he made his Senior debut in the Dr. Crokes old pitch in Deerpark on Saturday, 16th November 1996 in the South Kerry SH Championship Final. We defeated Kilgarvan by 2-9 to 0-11 in that Final with Peter lining out at right wing back and playing for the full hour. For the record the following was our line-out that day: Tadhg O’Halloran, John Paddy O’Sullivan, Pat Dowling, Mike Tangney, PETER O’REGAN, Brendan Long, Joseph O’Connor (0-1), Pádraig Teahan (0-1), John Lyons, Darren Crotty, Joe Rogers (0-3), Michael Callinan, Seán Holden, Kevin McNamara, Brian Neenan (1-4).

Sub used: Jonathan O’Regan (28m) (1-0).

A few others were also mentioned as having retirement thoughts last Saturday night but a plea by team Manager, Michael O’Leary, supported by his two colleagues Ger Scollard and John Connolly, to come back better and stronger next season was greeted with enthusiasm.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties and Functions. Enquiries about Club Bookings should be made by contacting Harry Hynes at 087 2467286.

Austin Stacks GAA Juvenile Club News

PEIL FAOI 6: We completed our 2018 season with this rip-roaring round of games under the stewardship of mentors with very high credentials, including Wayne Quillinan, Keith McKensie, Mike McCannon and William Kirby.

Players on view were Daniel Fitzmaurice, Harry Healy, Ruadh Horan, Jawaher Mohammed, Ruane Lawlor, Oran Maguire, Coby McMahon, Conor McCannon, Gerry McDonald, Finn McKensie, Ciarán Murphy, Seán O’Grady, Ben O’Leary, Mattise Power, Tadhg Slattery and Jake O’Driscoll.

After three rounds of fantastically exciting games laced with terrific enthusiasm, the teams could not be seperated and, so, the Jimmy Barry Cup was presented to the three most impressive players throughout the season….Harry Healy, Jamie Quillinan and Gerry McDonald.

Well done, lads. Agus sin deireadh le cúrsaí peile lasmuigh don séasúr seo. We look forward to seeing these brilliant boys in action indoors at a later stage!

PEIL FAOI 8: The U8 football season finished on Sunday (21st) with the playing of two great finals for the ‘Bracker’ ‘Regan and Kevin Barry Cups at Connolly Park.

Following the pre-match parade and the playing of our National Anthem, the teams took to a wet and slippery pitch. Fortunately for the players and the large attendance, the rain stopped before the throw-in.

(a) In the Bracker O’Regan Cup Final we saw Team B, captained by Tom Dawson, playing Team C, under the leadership of Luke Kavanagh. The first half was closely contested and Team B reached the break leading by 0-2. Team B pulled further ahead in the second half and they ran out deserved winners on a final score of 4-8 to 1-6.

Tom Dawson played a captain’s role throughout and took some lovely scores from mid-field. Diarmuid Hennessy and Oran O’Regan were very effective in defence and set up several attacks with their clearances. Jayden Griffin drove the team forward in the second half and was ably supported by his brother, Callum.

Up front, Oisín Horan was always a threat with his work-rate and intelligent play and he popped over some great points with his left foot.

For Team C, Luke Kavanagh gave a magnificent display from start to finish. Rocco McMahon and Conal Moore fought hard for every ball in the backs and Billy Kirby won a lot of possession around the middle. In the forwards, Harry Maguire and Séamus Keenan were very bright and busy.

Foireann B: Tom Dawson (capt), Oisín Horan, Jayden Griffin, Diarmuid Hennessy, Oran O’Regan, Callum Griffin. Foireann C: Luke Kavanagh (capt), Séamus Keenan, Billy Kirby, Harry Maguire, Rocco McMahon, Conal Moore. (b) In the Kevin Barry Cup Final, Team D was victorious v Team A. The game was keenly contested with both sides evenly matched. Team D’s Ryan O’Flaherty took hold of the game from midfield and set up numerous scores for his forward line of Liam Swords and Dara Moriarty.

However, all good teams have very solid defences and the D boys, with Conor Murphy, Alex O’Flaherty and John Riordan to the fore, laid the foundations for this victory. David Ahern did his very best to keep his team in the game and they had some opportunities for scores but, unfortunately, they didn’t convert them.

Nevertheless, their forward line of Michael Carmody, Elliot Calleja and Shane Carey got some great scores and on another day they would have been victorious. The back line of Gearóid Corcoran and Shay Horan were excellent and after the restart they drove on their team, ably assisted by David Ahern at midfield.

It was an excellent game though played in poor conditions but the players must be complimented for their high skill levels and never-give-up Rock attitude. Foireann D: Ryan O’Flaherty (capt), Dara Moriarty, Conor Murphy, Alex O’Flaherty, John Riordan, Liam Swords. Foireann A: David Ahern (capt), Elliot Calleja, Shane Carey, Michael Carmody, Gearóid Corcoran, Shay Horan.

PEIL FAOI 10: (a) On SATURDAY next (October 27th) we’ll have the biggest and best John Lynch Tournament yet. We’ll host 32 Under 10 football teams, including 16 clubs from 7 other counties – 500 players overall! This is a big tournament!

Teacht le chéile: starting time will be 11.30am in both Connolly Park and Cahersalee. Helpers welcome and really needed, le do thoil! Any and all assistance will be appreciated – please contact Liam on 087 6189655.

The hardworking organisers are at present burning the midnight oil!! (b) On Sunday morning last in Connolly Park, the John Galvin Cup was played for and was won by Rolo’s Rockies who were captained by Jake Carmody.

Nicola Galvin made the presentation. The Gary Fernane Cup was presented by Mairéad Fernane to Bao Foley, captain of Kirby’s Kings. Nice speeches were made by both captains. Ó 9 MBLIANA D’AOIS GO DTÍ AON BHLIAIN DÉAG D’AOIS: Was there ever a more hectic weekend for our juveniles…peil gan stad gan staonadh!? (i) Another road trip, on Saturday last, saw our heroes visit Glanmire, County Cork, for the Michael O’Leary Memorial Tournament.

They had a great time and played real Kerry football. Despite the early start, the Rockies hit the Cork pitches in full stride and overcame the legendary Nemo Rangers in the first match. That was nice!!

The tournament format had both our teams playing simultaneously against two teams from the opposing club with the cumulative score from both matches counting as the result for the fixture.

This, ní nach ionadh, resulted in lots of running between pitches, in serious mathematical calculations and in great excitement! Everyone had to be kept up to date…míle buíochas le Batty de Bastábla agus Pádraig Ó Foghlú!!

In their second match our boys overcame Bishopstown and that result ensured a ‘winner-takes-all’ final v the Glanmire boys, who had also won their first two matches.

We were behind when both scores were added at halftime but, hey presto, the famous Rockie resolve came to the fore in the second period as our boys hit the ‘turbo switch’ and pulled away from the host club.

Heartstopping! Mighty! Captain Gavin Ó Cathasaigh joyfully received the magnificent trophy and thanked, amongst others, our great friends in Glanmire for hosting such an excellent event. A great day for a great bunch of determined players and dedicated mentors…lá dár saol!

(ii) We were also represented at the fantastic John Mitchel Club Blitz last weekend. Undoubtedly, a great day’s football was had by all, a day that was full of thrills and spills for our team under the guidance of Dex Carmody and Brian Shanahan. There were ‘big’ performances on the day from Rory Lynch, Jack Diggin, Tadhg Falvey, Eoin Mangan and, in particular, from Adam O’Brien in goals.

(iii) On Sunday, we made our annual trip to the Canty Cup Competition at the St Finbarr Club in Cork. The management team of Brian Shanahan, Pa Laide, Laurence Cotter and Dex Carmody were very very happy with the day’s football. Great skill was shown by our lads and the oppositions were very impressed with our style of football!

(iv) The John Galvin Trophy Competition will continue on Thursday at 6.30pm in Caherslee.

CAID FAOI 16: (i) U16 club training will continue on Fridays at 5pm in Connolly Park. (ii) The Bordcheantar Thrá Lí Football League will commence this Sunday with an away game v Ballymac. Up The Rock! The Churchill and John Mitchel Club boys will be our opposition in the coming weeks.
