PÁDRAIG Ó CAOIMH, CLG: During the last years of his time as ArdRúnaí (1929 to 1964) of the GAA, Pádraig Ó Caoimh was in poor health. He had undergone several major operations between 1944 and 1963. Central Council reduced his workload and employed new staff, including his successor-to-be….Seán Ó Síocháin from Cill na Martra.

Pádraig passed away in May 1964, a few months before he could have celebrated 35 years as ArdRúnaí (Secretary) of the GAA. The Irish Times published an appreciation of Pádraig, writing of him in glowing terms.

It stated that ‘under his administrative genius the GAA became by far the strongest sports organisation in the country and reputedly the biggest amateur association of its kind in the world. During his term of office, its membership grew to the huge proportions of today, including powerful branches in the United States, Britain, Australia and Africa; (it developed) imposing stadia, of which Croke Park was his special care. Without his ability to coordinate, plan and inspire, only a fraction of this extraordinary progress could have been achieved.’….16th May 1964. In 1974, a new home for Cork Gaelic Games was built i mBaile an Teampaill (Ballintemple), Cork, on the site of the Cork Athletic Grounds which was opened in 1917.

The new stadium was named Páirc Uí Chaoimh in honour of Pádraig Ó Caoimh. And, 44 years later (2018), we have the new fine modern Páirc Uí Chaoimh….what a nice place to visit….and to ‘pip’ Cork in a Munster Football Final! Beannacht Dé ar anam Phádraig Uí Chaoimh, the Roscommon-born Corkman!

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) Our boys were a little disappointed that last week’s Tralee Town Board Suit Select Under 14 League (Division 1) Final between AdeS and K-O’R was  postponed at the last minute. As we were given only two hours notice of the postponement we would like to apologise to all the lads and their parents for the inconvenience; it was totally out of our control. (ii) Training continues every Sunday in preparation for the upcoming Central League. Expect text re training times. (iii) Congrats to all those selected for the Tralee District team. PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Traenáil mar is gnách Dé hAoine agus Dé Domhnaigh. (ii) Well done, boys! A greatfinal victory v Castlegregory in the Central Region League (Roinn 1) on Monday 21st. Éacht! AdeS: 4-11; Caisleán Ghriaire: 2-9. Up The Rock! We’ve now completed the hat trick of victories in the Central Region competition having won this title for the past two years. In the game we ran into an early lead with first half goals from James Fernane and Jordan Kissane. We were leading by nine points at half time. Castlegregory made a spirited comeback and reduced the deficit to four and indeed this would have been reduced even further but for a brilliant penalty save from Ben Quilter. We settled after that and two further goals from James Fernane and Ciarán Kelliher sealed vicory by ocht gcúilín déag….4-12 to 2-9. Thanks to Castlegregory for allowing this game to be refixed due to the unavailability of a number of our players. Fantastic sportsmanship! We look forward to the County League later in the summer. Starting time for the Under 10 footballers will be 6.30pm. And since the end of Scairbhín (15ú) and the feast of Saint Brendan (16ú), the weather has improved!

RÁTH RÓNÁIN & SEANCHILL: We had another great session at the Rathonane/Shanakill Community Centre…above The Top of The Rock….on Wednesday and our youngsters had a very enjoyable time! Next Wednesday again at 6.30pm, le cúnamh Dé! Tráthnóna Céadaoine! All welcome!

PEIL FAOI 11: Having recovered from our highly successful and most enjoyable Kilmacud (Dublin) blitz trip, our Under 11 boys will welcome and challenge the Douglas Club (Cork) this Saturday and throw in time will be at 11.30am in Connolly Park. Excitement in abundance! Sceitimíní áthais ar chách!

PEIL FAOI 12: Results from our league games v Na Crócaigh: (i) AdeS A: 3-21; Crócaigh A: 3-2 and (ii) AdeS: 5-19; Crócaigh B: 1-5. Those encounters have marked the end of a highly successful PHASE ONE of the County League. Mighty stuff, boys!

PHASE TWO: (i) Sunday 20th…AdeS: 4-18; Cill Chuimín A: 3-5; AdeS C: 3-13; Cill Chuimín: 3-6…great results indeed! The second phase commenced last Sunday and we were at home to Kilcummin. Both Rock teams continued on their winning run with the A lads successful by a margin of 0-16, whilst the C team finished ahead by 0-7. Some excellent performances continue to show the dedication and commitment of this group and smiles on all faces show that they are thoroughly enjoying themselves! PEIL FAOI 14: (i) The Tralee Town Board Suit Select Under 14 League (Division 1) Final between AdeS and K-O’R was re-fixed for Thursday 24th at 7pm in Na Gaeil Club field. (ii) In the semi-final of the County League (Division 1) our A boys came up a little short v Gleann Fleisce in Barra Dubh. Scór: AdeS A: 2-12;Gleann Fleisce: 5-18. They had already pipped us by 0-1 in an earlier round of the competition but we were hopeful of getting the upper hand this time!! Níorbh é ár lá é!! Thanks to all our boys for the great effort! Thanks to all who provided lifts! (iii) Our B boys took on the a very strong Dr Croke Club Bs in the County League (Division 9) semi-final on Wednesday (16th). Disappointingly, Dr Crokes were unable to play this game any other evening except on the 16th. After a poor first half display, which saw us 0-17 adrift, we put in possibly our best second half performance of the year and showed the large crowd in attendance just why we deserved to be in a County League semi-final. However, we were unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a 4-4 to 4-8 scoreline. Great heart and effort shown again and great credit due to all!

PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Traenáil mar is gnách Dé hAoine agus Dé Domhnaigh. (ii) We had a resounding win over Laune Rangers in the Central League semi-final on Monday week last and this victory set us up for a final v Castlegregory on Monday last. Up The Rock! PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: (i) We’ll be in Caherslee as usual next Sunday at 11am for football fun. Everybody welcome. (ii) The Thursday night football sessions for the Under 6/8/10 groups continue this week…17th May. These are great sessions and are much enjoyed by the participants. Starting time for the Under 6 boys and the Under 8 fellows is 5.45pm. Starting time for the Under 10 footballers is 6.30pm. Venue: Caherslee.

RÁTH RÓNÁIN & AN tSEANCHILL: Wednesday is D-day and rendezvous is at 6.30pm for our sessions at the Shanakill/Rathonane Community Centre! The 50 or so youngsters are really enjoying their peil Ghaelach! Bíonn siad ag baint sult as na seisiúin traenála. Just come along, a bhuachaillí agus a chailíní, on Wednesday ag leathuair tar éis a sé.

PEIL FAOI 11: Mentors and players rose early….ar ghlaoch na fuiseoige agus an ghealbhain….on Sunday morning last and set off for the Kilmacud-Croke Club’s multi-county blitz in Dublin. What a day! It was a really great trip and the day saw our lads going through the blitz unbeaten! We had wins over the hosts and over Celbridge, Newtown Blues and Cuala. This was invaluable experience for our lads and many thanks to all the well-behaved skilful players, brave mentors and enthusiastic parents who travelled. Lá dár saol a bhí ann!

PEIL FAOI 12: Excellent performances from all, last week, saw County League victories v Laune Rangers (A and B ) and v Club Naomh Pádraig (C). The A team maintained its unbeaten run and finished in front on a scoreline of 4-16 to 4-9.

Another brilliant team effort from everyone in this very committed and enthusiastic group (A and B) had supporters eagerly awaiting the final league matches v Na Crócaigh on Wednesday in Killarney! The B team boys had shown all their skill, guile and heart against the lads from Killorglin and they came out ahead….5-13 to 4-8.

Well done to all for gaining top position in their section in the County League! Éacht mór agus mórghaisce! Last Sunday evening, in Blennerville, we saw one of the best juvenile matches witnessed in many a long day. Our crack C squad showed the huge level of skill, drive and team spirit for which they are becoming increasingly renowned! Our C braves were in the ascendancy at the final hurdle! Our final A and B games against Dr Crócaigh Chill Airne on Wednesday marked the end of a highly successful Phase One of the County League. Results in next weeks notes.

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) The Tralee Town Board Suit Select Under 14 League (Division 1) Final between AdeS and V Ko’R will take place in Cahersalee at 6pm on Saturday 19th. Good luck, lads! All support welcome.

(iii) The semi-finals of the County League (Division 1) were played on Wednesday (16th) ….(a) Laune Rangers v Moyvane in Puck and (b) AdeS A v Gleann Fleisce in Barra Dubh. Thanks to those who provided lifts! We saw another great performance v Glenflesk on Tuesday evening, though we came up a little short on the scoreboard…3-08 to 2-10. Moyvane proved too strong for us the following evening winning on a scoreline of 4-14 to 1-04. Playing two high intensity games on consecutive evenings was a little too difficult.

(iv) Our B boys take on Ballymac B in the County League (Division 9) semi-final on Thursday (17th) at 7.00pm. We had defeated Na Crócaigh B…2-5 to 1-17…and had finished second in the league table and, so, Ballymac became our opponents. Laune Rangers have been pitted against Na Crócaigh in the other semi-final.

Our boys gave a fantastic performance against a very strong Dr Croke Club side with our lads kicking some excellent scores with and against a very strong breeze. D’imir siad i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile. Great heart was shown in the second half i gcoinne na gaoithe. ‘Well done’ to all! We also had a very convincing win over Legion. Some excellent football was played and a lot of very good scores were taken. What a great finish to our league campaigns with both teams qualifying for their respective County League semi-finals. Well done, all! Much credit deserved!

PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Traenáil mar is gnách Dé hAoine agus Dé Domhnaigh. (ii) We had a resounding win over Laune Rangers in the Central League semi-final on Monday week last and this has set us up for a final Castlegregory on May 21st. Up The Rock!

NA MIONÚIR: Good luck to our minors in the Division 1 League Final v Raonaithe na Leamhna ar an Aoine seo (19ú).

The Austin Stack Club Under 14 footballers who were pipped by Gleann Fleisce in their final game in the Lee Strand Féile Peile na nÓg (2018) competition in Páirc Uí Chonghaile on Saturday last. Despite heroic efforts and a fantastic second half display, these Rock lads came up a little short on a scoreline of 2-4 to 2-8. PEIL FAOI 12: In their second matches in the Lee Strand County League the A and B teams challenged Rathmore in Connolly Park. What football! Great work ethic, commitment and no little skill saw both Rock teams emerge victorious with the A team winning on a score line of 5-9 to 3-2 and the Bs were to the fore by a big margin. Well done, boys! The C team was in action against Ballyheigue on Monday evening….score in next week’s report. Our next games: our A and B boys are away v Ballymac on Tuesday night.

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) The semi-finals and final of the Lee Strand Féile Peile na nÓg (2018) competition took place on Saturday last in Connolly Park. Despite our best efforts and a fantastic second half display, we came up a little short v Glenflesk on a score line of 2-4 to 2-8.

Bhí na Ballymac dancers sa dara háit. Na Gaeil won the quiz agus bhí Parnells sa dara háit. Good to see that two TDB quiz teams are the best GAA U12/13s in Kerry!

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: We had a great turnout from all teams for our annual trip to the Legion Club. The outing was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mórbhbuíochas le gach duine, go mór mór na tiománaithe. The Killarney boys will return to Connolly Park in September.

PEIL FAOI 12: (i) Our first U12 Lee Strand County League game (Division 9)….Ballydonoghue: 1-0; AdeS: 4-15. (ii) We played the Division 1A and 1B games away v Kilcummin. (a) The A game was won by ‘The Street of Champions’. Scór deiridh-: AdeS: 5-15; Cill Chuimín: 1-7. (b) The B team boys got their County League (Division1B) campaign off to a flying start on a heavy pitch in Kilcummin.

Within 5 minutes they had bagged 3 goals….2-0 from Thomas (one from a free) and 1-0 from Ryan McMahon. Then Leon pointed. However, after weathering the initial Rock pressure, Kilcummin responded with 0-2. Shortly after, Jake scored a fine 0-1 and Ryan cooly followed with another. Scór leathama: 3-3 to 0-2.

The East Kerry lads came out fighting in the second half and immediately scored a fine point. Because of the heavy surface it took a while for more scores to come but The Rock popped over 0-3….0-2 by Thomas and 0-1 by Jake. Kilcummin responded with a goal, following sustained pressure during which Conor Galvin pulled off some fine saves.

Defenders Tomas, Brendan, Max and Liam fought hard and regained control with Fionán, who was always available and who gained a lot of possession, providing a formidable screen from midfield. Ciarán came back on at midfield, after a break, and helped to win back control of this vital sector, getting on a lot of ball to restore supply and to enable the sharp forwards to keep the scoreboard ticking over!

Substitutes were introduced throughout a very physical game to relieve tired legs. Jody scored 2-1 on his competitive debut and David, Cormac and Naoude worked tirelessly to keep the ‘Black’nAmber’ in control. The Rock finished the game on the attack with halfbacks Liam (free) and Max adding points before Jody finished off the scoring with a pointed free to cement a satisfactory victory. Scór deiridh:- Cill Chuimín: 1-3; Na Stacaigh: 5-9. Toradh iontach!

(c) Our U12 C game (County League, Division 9) was played v Asdee/Ballylongford in the J.Walsh Park, Ballylongford, on Sunday last (15th).

Well done to our lads who had a good win. Excellent performances right across the team saw our lads victorious on a scoreline of 5-19 to 3-3. The level of improvement and commitment was very evident and all had a tremendously enjoyable trip. Great football played by all! D’imir ár leaideanna peil den scoth! (iii) We played more Division 1A and 1B games at home v Laune Rangers at 6.30pm on Tuesday last (17th)….Results next week. (iv) This coming weekend we will play at home v Rathmore (A and B). The game will take place on Sunday at 6.30pm. Our C team will challenge Ballyheigue on the same evening. Go n-éirí go geal libh, a pheileadóirí na Carraige!

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) The Group stages of the Lee Strand Féile Peile na nÓg (2018) took place on Wednesday last at various venues around the county. The Rock team was based in Connolly Park v Moyvane, Ballymac and Ardfert. We had a comfortable win against Moyvane in our opening game but came up just a point short against Ballymac in our second game….a game we probably should have won! Our last game was a do-or-die encounter against a very strong Ardfert side but, with a fantastic team performance in the failing light, we ran out with a 0-3 victory.

]We advanced to this year’s Féile Peile na nÓg semi-final v Gleann Fleisce and our game has been rescheduled (unavailability of pitches) and will be played this coming SATURDAY (21st) in our own Connolly Park. In the other semi-final Ballmac will challenge Laune Rangers. (ii) Our indoor training will be in the club gym on Thursday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Bígí i láthair, le bhur dtoil. (iii) County League: (a) Our B team had a very convincing (away) victory over Strand Road in the County League on Wednesday the 4th.

We were looking for an improved performance after our last rather lacklustre display and we got our answer in spades. The overall team performance was impressive, to say the least, and great credit is due to the lads for putting in the hard graft. We had a great indoor session with Damian and Aoife from EFitness at the John Mitchel Club Complex last Thursday evening and, hopefully agus le cúnamh Dé, the lads have been practising some of the exercises and stretches they were shown.

(b) Our second team’s County League (Division 9) match vLegion is being rescheduled. Meanwhile, our boys were scheduled to play away v Ballymac on Thursday evening and….NB….lifts required, please. Expect text.

PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Training for our Under 16 players will take place on Fridays and on Sundays. (ii) Our As had a good win in Gallaras v An Ghaeltacht (6-7 to 0-13) and our B team performed commendably against Club Naomh Pádraig. (iii) Then we faced Na Gaeil and lost (1-11 v 2-14) agus thugamar aghaidh ar an An Daingean. (iii) Our A Boys (Division 1) played away v Ballymac last Monday April 16th.

SEANFHOCAIL: (i) Bainne i ndiaidh feola agus uisce i ndiaidh éisc (drink milk after eating meat and water after fish); (ii) Pós idir chiall agus foghar (marry a person who is sensible and sound in character).

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10: On Saturday next, we’ll make our annual visit to our friends at the Legion Club, Killarney. The games will take place at 10.30am and, so, anyone in need of a lift should go to the club at 9.30am. Beidh an-chluichí á n-imirt!

PAUL LUCEY RUN: Our inaugural 5/10km Paul Lucey Memorial Walk/Run for The Rock is coming up on May 7th which is earmarked as ‘Lá na gClub(anna)’. It promises to be a big club day!

It is expected that anybody who has any association with the club will participate in this event. If interested, one may register online via our Facebook page or may register on the day.

PEIL FAOI 12: (i) We made an enjoyable and very successful a trip to Legion on Easter Monday. Well done, all! Thanks to our hosts.

(ii) Our competitive season got underway on Thursday the 5th in windswept North Kerry when we played our first U12 Lee Strand County League game (Division 9) away v Ballydonoghue. Playing into a strong wind in the first half, the boys knew that they had to get off to a good start. After initially losing possession from the throw in, the new midfield paring of Mark and Ciarán won back the ball and started a passage of play that resulted in a fine opening point from the bróg of Ryan McMahon. Applying great pressure, the lár páirce boys won every kickout and scored 1-7 from play….0-4 from Mark and 1-3 from Ciarán….agus iad ag imirt in aghaidh na gaoithe móire. Ballydonoghue eventually broke The Rock stranglehold and began to attack our goal but the Black’n’Amber backline was superb under pressure; Seán and Brendan were rock solid in the fullback line and Max and Leon kept getting out ahead of their men or tracking them ceaselessly.

Despite good possession and with the strong wind Ballydonoghue found it difficult to get scores! Conor Galvin was calm and collected in goal despite all the high balls pumped in at him and his suberb kickouts found his men every time.

Then, midway through the second half, Ballydonoghue got the goal that their hard work deserved but we responded with a fantastic point from Thomas Derege to ‘close out’ the half. We were in front….1-9 to 1-0.

With the wind behind them in the second half, it was time for the “Twin Towers”, Thomas and Steven, to terrorise the North Kerry defence. Great ball-winning by Steven led to Thomas pointing 3 more times and there were further goals from Mark, Naoude and Cormac Bastible (the goal-of-the-game!).

Cormac showed a cool head…his finish would put his older Brothers in the shade! Leon, who had swapped with Conor, was unbeatable in goals and Conor began to put further pressure on the Ballydonoghue backline.

Special mention must be made of our subs, Naoude and Rory! Playing with their older brothers, both contributed hugely to the result with Naoude’s goal finishing a fine Rock attack that was started by Rory; he was the ‘dynamo’ in the half forward line, skilfully hoovering up loose ball and efficiently linking play.

Having tightly policed the defence all evening, Seán began some powerful runs from the back to relieve pressure as our forwards tired; he was rewarded with a mighty point….Ronan Shanahan would have been proud it!

Cormac added a point after a neat shimmy and Mark finished off the scoring with his fifth point to leave us winners at the final whistle on a scoreline of 1-0 to 4-15.

A huge ‘thank you’ to the Ballydonoghue mentors who generously accommodated the fixture change. The Baile Uí Dhonnchú team’s gallant efforts weren’t reflected in the final scoreline. (iii) We played the Division 1A and 1B games away to Kilcummin on Sunday 8th.

RULES FOR UNDER 12 FOOTBALL LEAGUE: 1. a goal scored after the 5th goal counts as a point; 2. games are to be 25 minutes per half; 3. the player who is fouled takes the free kick; 4. a sideline kick is to be taken by the player nearest to where the ball goes out; 5. it is recommended that all players play for at least 25 minutes in each game; 6. the number of substitutions is unlimited; 7. play is restricted to one hop and one solo; 8. all kick outs are from the hand and from within the small parallelogram; 9. the dimensions of the small parallelogram are 1.2m out from the goalposts and 3m from the end line; 10. all 45s are to be taken off the ground from 36 metres; 11. no foot dribbling, i.e. no more that two foot-touches along the ground are permitted; 12. size 4 footballs are to be used; 13. for all U12 games, the ‘square ball’ rule will apply but there will be NO PENALTIES; 14. maximum number of players on team is 11; 15. B teams may be 9-aside or 10-aside; 16. clubs with three teams must submit their first 11 and second 11 two days before the second-round games; 17. the dimensions of the playing pitch will be circa 90 metres long and circa 45 metres wide; 18. if a team has an issue about the eligibility of an opposing player, a mentor should request the referee to take the player’s name and to get the player’s signature and date of birth; 19. if the home pitch is unplayable, the onus is on the home team to find an alternative venue, subject to agreement with the coordinator; 20. clubs are obliged to find an alternative referee if their own club referee is not available; 21. a team wishing to change a fixture (i) must agree to the change with the opposing team, (ii) must agree to a new date with the opposing team, (iii) must notify the coordinator, the PRO and the referee and (iv) must arrange the appointment of a referee for the new fixture.

(iii) TDB U14 League games: (a) DIVISION 1: Our A team played v Na Gaeil on Wednesday 21st and, after an epic encounter in Connolly Park, our boys were victorious. As three teams were tied at the top of the league table and as three teams can’t play in a final, it was decided to toss a coin chun an fhadhb a réiteach and, as a result, The Rock boys have advanced to this year’s final while Strand Road and Na Gaeil will meet in a play-off to decide which team gets the privilege of playing us in the final! A mouth-watering prospect! Date and venue to be decided. (b)

DIVISION 3: Our B team contested this year’s Town League final v Ballymac in Healy Park and, after a fantastic team performance, our lads defeated our opponents. Even with several key players missing, we managed to line out 23 able-bodied young Rock men who overcame the challenge of Ballymac. Bhí bua cuimhsitheach ag an gCarraig. Captain on the day, Rohan Grattan, graciously accepted the Town League Trophy on behalf of his teammates and he thanked the large crowd in attendance.  We’d like to make special mention of all seven of the U12 panel who have helped us throughout this tournament and we look forward to your help again, boys, when the county league kicks off on Wednesday night. All the great work and effort is certainly showing with this very talented young side and ‘well done’ to all! Our A team also performed admirably v K-O’R but, faraor agus ochón, they came up a little short against a determained Strand Road side. We look forward to our challenge (back game) v Na Gaeil 2pm on Monday 19th March. (b) DIVISION 3: The Rock B boys had very satisfactory win in their 1st round game against Ballymac. They clearly showed, mar is dual do pheileadóirí na Carraige, how much good preparation, hard work and diligence can pay off when they gave a fine team performance. Our B team secured a place in the Division 3 Town League final with a very assured win v Strand Road last Saturday evening in Ballyrickard. The overall team performance was heart-warming as all players showed their ball-winning ability and showcased their many footballing skills.

A NEW 5k/10k event will take place in May to remember a great servant to the Austin Stacks Club.

The ‘Run for the Rock — Paul Lucey 10km / 5km Memorial Run was launched on Monday night at Austin Stacks clubhouse.

This run is to honour the memory of Paul Lucey, a proud Austin Stacks man who played with the club and won an All Ireland club medal in 1977. He trained many teams and  brought the 1986 and 1994 teams to county championship glory.

Continued below…

.

Paul had a great love of football but more importantly, a great love of fitness and well being and was very much involved with the Austin Stacks senior ladies team. Sadly Paul passed away in December 2017.

The Austin Stacks club, along with the  Lucey family, believe that this run is a fitting tribute to Paul’s memory and are hoping that this will appeal to a much wider audience than GAA players.

Paul’s son, Niall was at the launch with his children.  “We are delighted to be associated with this run and we encourage as many people as possible to dig out their trainers and get running. I want to thank Austin Stacks for honouring dad’s memory with this run. He loved running and keeping fit and he loved Stacks, so it’s a fitting event to remember him by.”

This event takes place on Monday, May 7  at 11am, starting at the entrance to Austin Stacks club.  To register for the run click here

THE NALLY STAND: Rugadh Patrick William Nally i mBalla i gContae Mhaigh Eo sa bhliain 1857. He was theeldest son of a prosperous Mayo farmer who had strong nationalist views. Patrick was one of six brothers and was an outstanding athlete.

From an early age, he had been a Fenian (founded in 1867) and by the late 1870s was a leading organiser of the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood).

He was also present at the founding meeting (1879) of the Land League of Mayo; it later became the Land League (Michael Davitt). Nally had attempted to start a nationalist athletics association in 1877 but it never got off the ground.

In 1879, Michael Cusack met Nally. Cusack realised that Nally’s views on the influence of British landlordism on Irish athletics were the same as his. Cusack later recalled how both Nally and himself, while walking through the Phoenix Park in Dublin, noted that only a handful of people were playing sports. Chuir sin an-bhrón orthu!

They agreed that it was time to “make an effort to preserve the physical strength of our race.” Nally organised a National Athletics Sports meeting in County Mayo in September 1879 and this effort was a success. (Years later,Austin Stack was involved in a similar effort in Tralee…to re-organise the GAA in Kerry!)

Cusack then organised another similar event which was open to ‘artisans’ in Dublin. The seed of the GAA was germinating! In 1881, Nally was sentenced to ten years imprisonment in Mountjoy Jail for what became known as the “Crossmolina Conspiracy” and, while in the ‘Joy, he was subjected to harsh treatment…no love shown to Irish prisoners in those days! Unfortunately, he died in prison in November 1891.

Ní raibh sé ach 34 bliain d’aois! (Parnell died the same year). The Nally GAA Club was formed in his memory in Dublin and most of its members were closely associated with working class nationalists during the 1890s and beyond. These are thoughts that might be in our minds when we next sit in the Nally Stand in Páirc an Chrócaigh and watch Kerry playing (v Dublin?)! B’fhéidir gurb é seo Bliain na gCiarraíoch! Cá bhfios?
6ú EANÁIR: Nollaig na mBan = Féile na dTrí Rí.

AR AIS AR SCOIL: Best wishes to all our players as they face into another tough school term.

(ii) Senior Scór looms ahead! The club needs a 4-person table quiz team, a 5-person ballad group, 5 musicians for a grúpa ceoil, srl. An bhfuil damhsóirí (rinceoirí) againn?

AN RAIBH ‘FHIOS AGAT? Rev. Fr. Thomas Croke, first Patron of the GAA, lived in Tralee (see the plaque on Gerard Hogan’s Shop in The Square) for some years as a child. His parents were William and Isabella (Plumber). They had 8 children….6 boys and 2 girls.

One of the boys, Thomas, became a priest and later became Archbishop of Cashel and Emly and, mar is eol dúinn, patron of our organisation. Two more of the boys also entered the priesthood.

Fr. William Croke was curate in Charleville during the Famine years; he contracted famine fever and died at a very young age. Fr. James Croke went on to become Vicar-General of the Diocese of San Francisco. John, Daniel and David were the other boys. Cad faoi na cailíní?

The two Croke sisters decided to become nuns and entered the Convent in Charleville…Sister Ignatius and Sister Joseph.

They made their mark as nuns of the Mercy Order both at home and abroad during the Crimean War and in Bathurst, Australia. The old Croke homestead in Kilbrin, County Cork, has now been restored. It might be worth a visit some time!

PEILEADÓIRÍ FAOI 15/16: The presentations to our successful Under 15/16 footballers took place in the clubhouse last Friday. A lovely occasion and a large crowd attended! Medals were presented, speeches were made and cameras were ‘snapped’! What a season!

The Under 15s won the Super-Touch 10-a-side Tournament and the Town League. The Under 16s won the Central Region League and the County League…something that no Rock team had achieved in the last ten years. The medals for the year’s heroic efforts were presented by our Rockie Legend guest of honour, William Kirby.

William, in a rousing speech, recalled great days in the Green’n’Gold as well as lovely memories from the 269 times that he lined out as a Black’n’Amber player. Yes, 269 times….this is not a misprint!

He also gave the lads great advice on how to work hard and train well and on how to act and play on the playing pitch. These boys…young men now…look forward to the challenges of 2018.

An interesting and motivating Q&A session was conducted by Tim and William on ‘Kerry and Austin Stack Club football’….past, present and future and there were encouraging thoughts for the future! (Have we a 4-man quiz team for the upcoming Scór na nÓg – Under 17 competition as a follow up to this? See below, boys, and have a go!).

Proceedings, mar is gnách, were co-ordinated by Tim McMahon, Juvenile Chairman, and by Colm Mangan, Coaching Coordinator.

Refreshments for the players were generously provided after the presentations with compliments of one of our sponsors, Subway. ‘Well done’ to all involved on a successful season…not every GAA club can field two teams at this level…tá dhá fhoireann mhaithe faoi 16 ar an gCarraig!

What a season for the Austin Stack Club Under 15s and 16s! The U15s won the Super-Touch 10-a-side Tournament and the Town League. The Under 16s won the Central Region League and the County League…something that no Rock team had achieved in the last ten years. The club successes were recalled on Friday last in the clubhouse. AN RAIBH ‘FHIOS AGAT? The man credited with much of the ‘drive’ in founding the GAA was Michael Cusack. Cusack was born in famine times….in 1847 (Black ’47). He worked as a teacher at Blackrock College in Dublin. (Éamonn de Valera later taught at the same college).

In 1877, he set up his own cramming school to prepare students for examinations into the British Civil Service. (Britian ruled Ireland at the time!) “Cusack’s Academy” was in Gardiner Street, just above Barry’s Hotel on the way to Croke Park.

His pupils did extremely well, resulting in soaring attendances at the academy. Pupils at ‘Cusack’s Academy’ were encouraged to get involved in all forms of physical exercise. Cusack was troubled by falling standards in specifically Irish games.

He wanted to remedy this situation! He set out to re-establish the ancient Tailteann Games as an athletics competition with a distinctive Irish flavour and to re-establish the skilful game of hurling as the national pastime. Cusack met with several other enthusiasts on Saturday 1thNovember 1884 in Thurles.

The foundation day/date was chosen for its mythological significance as, according to legend, Samhain (1 November) was the time when the Fianna’s power died. He meant this choice of day to symbolise the rebirth of the Irish heroes and the Gaelic Athletic Association for the Cultivation and Preservation of National Pastimes was established.

Its name was subsequently shortened to Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (Gaelic Athletic Association). Imagine being called the GAACPNP!! Within a few weeks of the organisation’s foundation, Thomas Croke, the Catholic Archbishop of Cashel, gave it his approval and became its first patron. (The Archbishop of Cashel is, to this day, the patron of the GAA).

Its other patrons included both Michael Davitt and Charles Stewart Parnell. Who was the first president of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael? (Did you read last week’s notes?) Where in Tralee would you see a plaque to Dr Croke (the man, not the club!)?

CONNOLLY PARK? An Cruaghort? Na Cruaghoirt? Cá bhfuil sé/siad? Do you know that we play our football and hurling in An Cruaghort or Na Cruaghoirt? That’s the original name (in old maps) for the area: crua = hard; gort = field; goirt = fields.

The limestone rock under our now ‘well-padded’ pitches meant that the ground was very hard in bygone days! Hence the name…the hard ground/field(s)! To check, go to www.logainm.ie  Try other names: Ballyard, Monavalley, Killeen, Gallowsfields, Clounalour.

AN RAIBH ‘FHIOS AGAT? At a meeting in Loughrea, County Galway, in August 1884, Michael Cusack (Clareman, teacher, sportsman and nationalist) outlined his plans to a group of local athletics enthusiasts. He hoped to establish, he explained, a national organisation for Irish athletes and, as well as that, to revive hurling, the most skilful game of all. Though living in Dublin at the time, he continued the work of convincing others of the need for and usefulness of such an organisation.

Thosaigh sé ag scríobh litreacha. (He had no phone, no mobile, no internet!) He sent letters to many people, inviting them to attend a meeting in Durlas Éile (Thurles). On 1st November 1884 (123 years ago), the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in Miss Hayes’ Commercial Hotel, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, by Michael Cusack and Maurice Davin (a Tipperary man and Ireland’s most famous athlete ag an am sin).

Other founding members present were John Wyse-Power, John McKay, J.K. Bracken, Joseph O’Ryan and Thomas St George McCarthy. Many of the seven men who attended the meeting were Fenians. Patrick W. Nally from Mayo (the Nally Stand!), a keen athlete and leading IRB organiser, also played a prominent role in bringing about the birth of the GAA. It was he who suggested founding the organisation to Cusack; he wasn’t present at the Thurles meeting. Roghnaíodh Maurice Davin mar uachtarán…an chéad uachtarán ar Chumann Lúthchleas Gael.
