THE draws for the Castleisland Mart Club Championship took place last night at the County Committee meeting held in Austin Stack Park.
Recent championship clashes would suggest Kerins O’Rahilly’s would have preferred to avoid Legion.
The Killarney side have knocked O’Rahilly’s out of the 2015 Senior Championship and the two previous years of the club championship.
Austin Stacks are also up against a team they’ll be very familiar with.
Milltown/Castlemaine were the side that unexpectedly dumped The Rock into a three way Senior Championship Relegation Play-off last December.
Defending champions, Dingle, will face Rathmore.
In the Intermediate championship, John Mitchels, have been drawn against Spa, who they defeated on Sunday after two titanic battles to claim Division 1 Promotion.
Ardfert have a difficult test against Munster champs, St Mary’s. But with home advantage, Ardfert, will be looking to upset the south Kerrymen.
In the Junior grade, Ballymac host Cordal, St Pats go to Duagh and Na Gaeil play Cromane on home soil.
The draws were made by Joe Wallace under the Supervision of the County Committee members

“We believe that these management groups can be an ongoing cornerstone of our developing and growing club. Very strong linked in management teams are in place in this area and hopefully we will continue to have positive momentum as we head towards our Centenary in 2017,” said Liam Lynch.
GARDAÍ are warning the public about a phone scam which can clear the credit on your phone or add large amounts to your monthly bill.
People around the county are reporting that they received calls from a foreign number starting with 00 247. A person can be heard shouting in distress in the background and they then hang up.
If the person who receives the call rings back, then their phone credit is used up or if they have bill phone, a huge amount is added to it.
Gardaí are telling people not to answer the calls starting with 00 247, which, according to Google, is the prefix for phone numbers in Ascension Island an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, mid way between Africa and South America.
Chances are, you probably don’t know anyone there!
If you see the number come up let it ring out, or if you do answer it, don’t ring back.

REPORTS ;
(U15) Div 2 ;
Fenit 4-4 Park FC B ,
Played on the great Astro pitch at Mounthawk Park, we got the perfect start when TJ raided down the left and from 40 yards left fly into the top right hand corner.
This should have given us the confidence to get more but it was Fenit who reacted better and went ahead with two before the break.
We started the second half much better and should have got a few only for the Fenit keeper being on his toes. With most of the possession we were caught on the break twice to let them increase their lead, but we never gave up and thanks to another strike from TJ and one each by Joe and Cillian, we were back level.
As the game drew to a finish we could have got the win only for some last ditch defending by Fenit. Overall, a good performance by all the squad on the day and our improvement is on an upward curve. Man of the Match: Denis Nolan .
(U13) Premier ;
Park A 5-1 Inter Kenmare
Kenmare took the lead against the run of play. But we bounced back with a goal from Graham sheehy. Half time was 1-1.
Leon Daly put us ahead 15 mins in the second half followed quickly by a goal from Darragh Caplis.
And Cianan Cooney scored 2 after coming off the bench. Best on the Day for the park were Sean Hill, Darragh Caplis and Jamie Fitzgearld but Leon Daly for man of the match he was a constant thorn in the side of Kenmare down the right wing scoring 1 and setting up 2.
(U13) Div.1 ;
Park B 5-2 Ballyhar Dynamos ,
It was a wet and mucky setting for the league game between Park under 13 B and Ballyhar. The game got under way at 1pm.
There was an equal amount of possession for the first 10 minutes or so until the Ballyhar left back went to make a clearance from a wide position which David (Tiny) Callaghan blocked not once but twice and then rounded the full back and sent a lovely cross into the area where Matt Healy was waiting, as Matt went for the ball he was taken down resulting in a penalty which Tiny took and put away to open the scoring.
The game continued with both sides pushing forward but excellent defending by full backs Adam Sheehy and Ryan Guerin kept things safe for Park. In the twentieth minute nice link up movement down the wings between Evan Foley and Adan Walker saw Matt get the ball and lay it on nicely for Tiny who scored his second.
Shortly before half time good play through midfield saw Connor Brick play Tiny through, Tiny lobbed the keeper to score his third goal which so far has to be the goal of the season. Half time score 3-0.
Park continued on the attack after a short break, however good play by Ballyhar saw them find the Park net, 3-1. Within two minutes a lovely pass from Matt to Tiny saw Tiny score his fourth.
Just after that Danny Fisher playing on the left wing made a perfect cross to Tiny in the box who just missed his fifth by inches. With 10 minutes to go Matt moved to left wing and Leonard Salihaj replaced him as striker.
On the pitch for 5 minutes the ball broke to Leonard and he made no mistake sticking the ball in the net. With the score at 5-1 a lack of concentration allowed Ballyhar to score a second making the final result 5-2. Man of the match Tiny was outstanding throughout the entire game. Well done to all park players who remain in top position.

Perms, stonewashed denim jackets and leg warmers were the height of fashion, Stock, Aiken and Waterman soundtracked our lives, teenage girls swooned over Tom Cruise in Top Gun and boys dreamt of Kim Basinger.
May God have mercy on our souls.
Anyway, you can relive the retina-scorching fashions and synth-heavy pop ‘choons’ at a special fundraising 80s disco and draw at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday, February 13, in aid of Spa National School.

The Parents Association has been very busy preparing for what promises to be a night to remember.
Everyone is invited to get out the old 80’s gear and get dressed up, should they wish to. If they would prefer not to, that’s no problem.
There will be prizes for the best dressed on the night. Local DJ Chris Shortt will be on hand to play everyone’s favourite tracks from the 80s and there will be lots of novelty games and prizes, with finger food also being served during the evening.
“There has been a very positive response to the event and everyone is really looking forward to a fun night out.” said Deirdre Falvey, Chairperson of the Parents Association.

Those who buy a ticket but can’t attend will still be included in the ‘Valentine’s Draw also being held on the night. The school has secured ten quality prizes, including B/& B stays in top hotels, Spa breaks, Family Photography shoots, Family Leisure Centre memberships, meal vouchers etc as well as a beautiful painting from local artist John Hurley.
“We are very appreciative of the brilliant support we have received from the local community,” said school principal Peter Linehan, “and look forward to investing all monies raised in new curricular resources for the school.”

Gavin O’Connor was in Brosna to see John Mitchels grab an injury-time winner in the Division 1 Promotion Playoff Final Replay against Spa…
John Mitchels 1-11
Spa 0-13
JOHN MITCHELS ended 13 years outside of Division 1 by overcoming Spa in a thrilling finale in Brosna on Sunday.
It looked as though we were heading to extra-time for the second week in a row only for Alan O’Donoghue to nail the winning point with almost the last kick of the game.
Speaking to a joyous Alan O’Donoghue after the final whistle, despite being five points down at half-time he was never in doubt they would come back.
Continued below…
“I was never worried for a second. I knew we could come back into it, I’m absolutely delighted,” said O’Donoghue.
“It’s absolutely massive for the club. Only for our manager, Ger Dan Dennehy, the selectors and massive support we wouldn’t have done it.”
As we veered into added time, it had looked like James Duggan had sealed victory when he pointed superbly from 30 yards out on the wing.
But such was the ebb and flow between these two sides over 140 plus minutes of football, Spa came roaring back to level it up with a free from Michael O’Donoghue.
The match was now into the second minute of added time and Spa had a chance to win it themselves, but Evan Cronin’s high shot went tantalisingly wide.
With most of both sides caught up field, from the restart the ball was pinged to Alan O’Donoghue who was the furthest Mitchels man forward.
First to the ball, the impish attacker cut inside his man and stroked the winner over the bar from 30 yards out to send Mitchels into Division 1 for the first time since 2003.
Continued below…
Mitchels had found themselves five points down at half time, a slight breeze helping Spa going in with 0-10 to 0-5 double score advantage at the break.
Spa dominated during the first period, with full-forward Michael O’Donoghue’s tally coming to 0-5. But the Killarney side will rue a number of missed opportunities. They kicked seven wides over the course of the first half while Mitchels were far more economical, registering 0-5 from their seven shots at goal.
At the beginning of the second half, Mitchels needed a goal to get back into this and after two missed goal opportunities by Alan O’Donoghue, on seven minutes, defender Cian Sheridan showed the attacker how it was done.
After a mazy run that brought him inside the square, Sheridan shot at goal. The Spa keeper looked to have it covered only for the ball to deflect off his glove and loop into the net.
Continued below…
In the eighth minute things were all square again after James Duggan kicked a 45.
It was end to end stuff for the remaining 20 minutes, both sides going toe to toe which saw them exchange the lead on four occasions.
Spa put up a tremendous battle, midfielder Andrew Garnett was the engine of the side and the dominant aerial presence throughout.
For Mitchels, over both games, Stevie O’Mahoney was a source of calm for their defence, collecting the ball and more often than not distributing it wisely to the forward line along with chipping in with scores himself.
As we veered towards the exciting finale, Sean Moloney, drew Mitchels level and with 12 minutes left, Alan O’Donoghue, put the Tralee side in front with his first point of the match.
There was no shaking Spa, Michael O’Donoghue, with two minutes left on the clock pulled the game level once more. The feeling at that point was the next score would win it, but there would be three more after that.
After O’Donoghue got the last score, in the end, the clock was on Mitchels side. The final whistle sparked huge celebrations from the John Mitchels players and their vocal travelling support.
Approaching these playoffs, Mitchels were seen as the least likely team out of St Mary’s, Rathmore and Spa to come through. What set the tone for them over both games was how willing they were to get the blocks in and really fight for every ball.
Ger Dan Dennehy and his backroom team have fostered a tremendous resolve and spirit. Also, with James Duggan, they have a star in the making, which suggests the future is bright for the Mitchels.

JOHN MITCHELS v SPA (AWAY)
Mitchels met Spa today in the County Football League Division 2 play off Replay in Brosna.
Conditions were slightly better today with a light breeze. Spa won the toss and played with the wind in the 1st half. Spa started better and raced into a three point lead before Mitchels struck back with points from George Bastible, Stephen O’Mahony and Alan O’Donoghue.
Spa followed up with a further two points from play. Mitchels levelled the game again with points from James Duggan and Stephen O’Mahony leaving the teams tied at five points each.
Spa completely dominated the last quarter of the first half scoring five points in succession leaving the half time score John Mitchels 0-05 Spa 0-10 giving Mitchels a mountain to climb in the second half.
True to Mitchels determination they opened the second half at a blistering pace and within 8 mins had scored 1-02 thanks to two points from James Duggan and a well taken goal from Cian Sheridan.
With both teams level it was all to play for and it was Spa who forged ahead with a point from a free. Sean Moloney levelled the game again with a point from play followed by a Niall Sheehy point from play which put Mitchels ahead for the first time in the game. Spa converted a free levelling the game 1-09 to 0-12.
James Duggan gave Mitchels the lead again with a point from play which was cancelled by a point from play by Spa. With the game looking as if it would go to extra time a long ball was played into Alan O’Donoghue who turned for goal scoring the last point of the game giving Mitchels a 1 point victory over Spa.
Final score John Mitchels 1-11, Spa 0-13.
Mitchels are now promoted to Divison 1 this season.
Great credit must be given to the players and back room team who showed such dedication, commitment and determination in gaining promotion to Division 1 after a long 12 year wait.
Thanks to Spa players for giving such a good performance in a very exciting game and a special mention to the Brosna GAA Club for providing the pitch and refreshments after the game which was very much appreciated. For match photos click here

A strong attendance of dedicated volunteers met at Kerins O’Rahillys on Friday the 22nd of January, at the invitation of Parnells Chairperson Dermot Reen.
Our 2 excellent facilitators from Kerry County Board formed us into a number of discussion panels and for the next 2 hours the major elements of a Club Plan were discussed and debated among the attendees.
At the end of this lively and fruitful session, Dermot took an action to collect the recorded feedback of all the groups and to distribute the relevant sections to a number of nominated moderators.
Each moderator will have a small team of volunteers from the night, to collate and organise this material and draft it into a submission for inclusion in the Parnells 5 year plan. Dermot is anxious to have the Club Plan in place before April, so the groups now have a short number of weeks to prepare their submissions.
The club plan will be organised into a number of major sections, including general areas relating to coaching, management structures, facilities, finance and communications.

It proved, indeed, to be a bumber nights Badminton at the CPC.IE sponsored Badminton County Singles Championships played at the Killarney Sports Centre on Friday night last, where over 70 competitors took part in the ladies and men’s championships for divisions 1, 3 and 5.
The fare provided was out of the top drawer and the games were so close and exciting that the chimes of midnight had tolled before the final shuttle was put away.
Indeed, that final shuttle was played by the defending div. 1 singles champion. Tom Bourke of the Kingdom Club of Castleisland, who must be living in cloud ten all week as by his defeat of that talented teenager from Moyvane, James Flaherty. He collected his 10th singles title, his first one being back in 2006.
This was a stirring mens decider as young Flaherty pushed the champion the full way and some of the rallies provided were of the highest quality. It was experience that won for Bourke. as he had the patience to bide his time during those long rallies.
Bourke played the ideal singles game by clearing shot after shot to the base line and never went for the smash until the time was ripe and when he did they were winners.
Flaherty, on the other hand, did play his part in those rallies but might have gone for the net drop shot a bit too soon and when he did, he was punished by Bourke.
The game was won by Bourke in two close sets, 21-17 in both, but there is no doubt that the name of James Flaherty will be engraved on that prestigious cup many a time in the years to come.
The ladies division 1 final was between two players who have contested this final several times in the past. These were defending champion Edel Broderick of the Castleisland Kingdom Club and Dingle’s Ciara O’Connor, who last held this crown three years ago .
This was another spirited contest between two players who would have known each other so well. It was another two set decider and this time it was the Dingle girl who came out on top by 21-16; 21-18.
In the mens division 3 mens final there was another Kingdom player like Bourke who retained his title. That was Aidan McCarthy and his final opponent was the talented Timmy Noonan of Moyvane.
The first set was of high quality and great excitement with the defending champion winning by 21-18 and despite the best efforts of the gallant Noonan, McCarthy made sure of victory when winning set number 2 by 21-15.
The ladies division 3 decider was the only final of the night that went to the three sets for decision. In this contest, Moyvane’s Helen Browne faced Listowel’s Michelle Kearney, who also reached this decider last year.
The opening set was score for score with the sides level at both 7 and 9 each but Miss Kearney gradually eased in front and just came home by 21-18. Again the second set was tentative with the sides again level at 4 and 5 each but Mrs Browne then seized the initiative and forged ahead to win the set and level the match by 21-11.
In that third and final set the sides were again level at 4 each but the Moyvane lady was now on fire and despite the best efforts of Miss Kearney, the title was on its way to Moyvane with Mrs. Browne coming again good by 21-11.
The division 5 ladies decider saw Killarney up against Kingdom with last season’s finalist, Elaine Galvin, representing Killarney and Eimear Horgan flying the Castleisland colours.
Both of these players came into this decider with glowing reputations and no doubt both enhanced these reputations on the night. Both girls are teenagers and both gave their all with the Killarney girl edging out the first set by 21-15 and despite a noble effort by Miss Horgan, the title was bound for Killarney with Miss Galvin winning by 21-9.
The mens division 5 final was another all teenager confrontation with 16 year old Niall Geaney of Dingle taking on 15 year old Liam Greaney of Moyvane.
It was the Dingle youth who won the first set by 21-11 but what a second set display both youths put with the sides level at 20 each but Dingle won their second title on the night with Geaney edging out for victory by 22-20 in the tie break but fair play to the gallant Greaney for playing his part in an impressive contest.
The next series of County Championship fare will be the division 2 and 4 ladies and mens singles Championships to be played in Killarney on Friday night Feb.5th commencing at 7.45 pm.
Entry forms are now with club secretaries. Players are requested to note the change of date for these championships from what is printed on the annual fixture card.
MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Killarney Sports Centre will once again be the place to be for all Munster Badminton enthusiasts on Sunday next the last day of January 2016 where the Munster Senior 1 and the Junior Badminton Championships will be played off.
Kerry’s Tom Bourke will go into action defending 2 titles, the mens singles and the mens doubles with his Castleisland Club partner Eric Nelligan whilst Dingles Ciara O’Connor will also be defending 2 titles, the ladies doubles and the mixed doubles crown, both won with Waterford partners.
In the junior championships Killarney’s Maeve Twomey and Listowel’s Fergal Hannon will hope to defend their mixed title and Moyvane’s Elaine Hudson will hope to go one better this year as she would hope to win the singles title.
Best wishes are extended to all Kerry players. The competitions commence at 10 am and are to be hosted by the Cork Association.
BALLYHEIGUE TOURNAMENTS
One thing is certain about the Munster events in Killarney on Sunday next, there will be no Kerry division 3,4 or 5 players in attendance as all of these players will be winging their way to the seaside resort of Ballyheigue where the local club will be hosting their annual tournaments for all division 3,4 and 5 players.
Division 5 will take court at 12 noon; division 4 at 2.30 pm and division 3 at 5 pm. There will be a plate competition for both the Division 4 and 5 events. Entry forms are now with club secretaries.
County Quiz

Various Items were then discussed, and the main item on discussion was a timing system. It was decided not to purchase, but to tighten up the finish lines and purchase new swim hats instead.
Winter Swimming: Winter Swimming continued last Sunday as usual and a great turnout of 27 swimmers showed up. The wind was blowing force 5 with a bit of rain about but the sun was peeking out as we entered the water.
The water temperature had risen a full 2c from last Sunday and was measured at 9.2c. This combined with a very warm 14c air temp made for a great swim with a good roll in the water.
Everyone stayed in for 10 to 15 minutes with a couple of die hards heading for the point and back. Teas, Coffees and Hot Chocolate and Cake were enjoyed by all afterwards. Come along and join us on Sunday’s as we build up to our Big Easter Draw.
KERRY GAA stars from all codes were honoured at the Kerry GAA Supporters Club social in the Ballygarry House Hotel on Saturday night.
A crowd of around 200 loyal GAA supporters reviewed the year gone by and speculated on Kerry’s chances for 2016 in the company of the football and hurling All-Stars.
There were presentations to the Christy Ring Cup winning captain, John Griffin, the hurling All-Stars Shane Nolan, John Egan, Pa Kelly and Keith Carmody, the football All-Stars Anthony Maher, Donnchadh Walsh, Shane Enright, and Brendan Kealy, the Minor B Hurling All-Ireland winning captain John Buckley and manager Ian Brick, the All-Ireland Junior Football winning captain Alan O’Donoghue and manager Stephen Wallace and the All-Ireland Minor Football winning captain Mark O’Connor and manager Jack O’Connor.
Not a bad year for Kerry GAA and the Supporters Club were there every step of the way at most of the games.
“We’re growing and growing, this is our 26th social,” said the Supporters Club’s PRO, Martin Leane. “There’s a lot of organisation involved in getting buses to the games, but the response from the public is tremendous. We go on time and come back on time – that’s our slogan! We’re on the road again in a week’s time, off to Dublin, where we hope to have two buses going.”
And what of Kerry senior footballers chances for 2016?
“It’s early days yet and there’s a lot of injuries and players to come back in form but they’ll be in the make-up at the end of the day,” said Martin.
A few more trips to Croke Park later in the year then?
“Hopefully,” said he with a wry smile.
• The club will take buses to Dublin this Saturday, January 30. It’s a day trip only and all seats must be booked by this Wednesday. Bus times are as follows: Farranfore 10am; Tralee 10.30am and Listowel 11am. For bookings contact; Donal O’Leary 064 58099, John King 066 7124229 and Martin Leane 087 2452901.
A TRALEE native, living in Wales, is hoping to get his book published in paperback after selling 700 copies in e-book form on Amazon.
Brendan Gerad O’Brien, formerly of St Brendan’s Park, now living in Newport, is married to Jennifer and has two children Shelly and Sarah.
The 68 year old had been writing ‘Dark September’ on and off for about 20 years and Tirgearr Publishing company has published it as an e-book.
Continued below…
The fictional thriller, set during World War II, has sold 700 units to date and will be turned into a paperback if it reaches the 1,000 sales mark.
It tells the story of Danny O’Shea, a Newport dock worker, who gets caught up in the action when German forces invade the South Wales coast to capture the Welsh steelworks and coal mines. Danny is from Tralee and dreams about going back there in the story.
Brendan’s father Maurice was from Tralee and his mother from Duagh. They moved to Tralee just after the war and he was born in Godfrey Place.
“We moved to Brendan’s Park when it was new, then to Railway Terrace,” Brendan told us via Facebook. “There were eight children and four still live in Tralee – Maurice O’Brien (Old Gallowsfield), John O’Brien (Gallowsfield), Liz O’Connell (Oakview) and Francis Scannell (Marian Park). Eamon lives in Dublin, Jo is in Weston-Super-Mare and Marie is in LIverpool.”
“I left Tralee in ’66 to join the Royal Navy but came home at every opportunity. Then I met Jennifer and in ’75 we moved to her home city, Newport. However, we made the yearly pilgrimage home. Jennifer loves Tralee, and when I retired we went back about five times every year.”
Sadly, Brendan’s father died ten years ago and his mother passed away last February.
As a child, Brendan spent his summer holidays in Listowel, where his uncle Moss Scanlon had a Harness Maker’s shop, now long gone and it was there that his love of words was kindled by the stories of John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon, who often wandered into the shop.
After serving nine years in the Royal Navy, Brendan progressed to retail management, working as a Department manager with the UK’s second largest supermarket.
Now retired, his hobby is writing short stories, 20 of which have already been published individually over the years, and also as a collection called ‘Dreamin Dreams’.
Now Brendan is hoping people can get the book physically into their hands by getting it published in paperback. If you’ve an interest in a good thriller then ‘Dark September’ is available for £3.99 and can be bought by clicking here on Amazon.
Mike O’Halloran reports on Kerry’s outing against Waterford in the Munster Senior Hurling League match played in Killarney yesterday afternoon, with photos by Gavin O’Connor…
Kerry 0-8
Waterford 0-17
Kerry hurlers played their last game in the Munster Senior Hurling League where they came up short against a Waterford team that included quite a lot of their big names like Shane and Darragh Fives, Noel Connors, Jake Dillon, Austin Gleeson and Maurice Shanahan.
Kerry had gone through the league without a win against either Limerick, Clare and Cork and speaking to the Kerry captain after the game, Kerry had hoped to win this game and were disappointed that they came up short.
Continued below…
The chance of Kerry winning this game did not look good from very early on as Waterford were in total control for all of the first half.
Even though the scoring was not very high, with Waterford only leading by six points on 17 minutes despite their huge amount of possession. In fact it took Kerry 18 minutes to register their first wide, a free from Shane Nolan.
It was 27 minutes before Shane opened Kerry’s account with a pointed free, he made it two a minute later. By this time, Waterford had seven points on the board, four of the points coming from the stick of Maurice Shanahan with Jake Dillon, Colin Dunford and Michael Walsh having one each.
Shanahan added two more before halftime with one coming from Austin Gleeson. Shane Nolan had one more from a free.
Continued below…
Ten points to three at halftime did not look too bad and there was hope that the Kerry challenge would improve.
Kerry tried as hard as they could to curtail the Waterford dominance and were a little better for the final ten minutes of the game.
Kerry seemed fitter than Waterford and were as physical as their opponents but the skill level, speed of execution and thought did not match the boys in blue and white.
Waterford played the full 70 minutes without putting on any subs.
Waterford ran out 0-17 to 0-8 winners, and the Deise spurned a goal chance when Shanahan opted for a point rather than take on Martin Stackpoole who had brought off three fantastic saves during the game.
Philip Lucid, who had replaced Pa Kelly at halftime, tapped over three points from frees when Shane Nolan was replaced by Brendan O’Leary. Jack Goulding had the only point from play for Kerry with a few minutes to go.
Kerry had started well in this competition scoring 0-18 points in their first two games against Limerick and Cork and the hope from the manager was that they would get to 20 points per game.
The results in the Munster Senior Hurling League may not be as important as the experience gained by the younger players against top quality opposition as Kerry face into the National Hurling league in two weeks.
Continued below…
The young guns like Jason Diggins, John Buckley, Jordan Conway,Darragh Shanahan and Jack Goulding have gained valuable experience at the top level and if Kerry can survive in Division 1B for a couple of years we will hear more of these boys.
Scroll down for more photos…
Kerry: Martin Stackpoole, Sean Weir, Bryan Murphy, Darren Dineen, Daniel Collins, Thomas Casey, Jason Diggins, John Griffin, Johnny Buckley (Jack Goulding), Colum Harty (James O’Connor), Patrick Kelly (Philip Lucid), Shane Nolan (Brendan O Leary), Keith Carmody, Michael O’Leary ( Michael Boyle), Jordan Conway.
Scorers: Shane Nolan 4 points (3 frees 1, 65). Philip Lucid 3 points (3 frees) Jack goulding 1 point.
IT was a brilliant night at Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday, as nine couples took to the floor displaying their fleet-footed moves to raise funds for Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club and Recovery Haven.
Yesterday, we told you that Anne Kerins and Tom Ferriter’s efforts stole the show at the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event and they were crowned the overall winners on the night (for our previous story and coverage click here).
“A big thank you to the dancers, choreographer and all who helped in any way to make the night such an outstanding success,” said Captain of Castlegregory Golf Club, Mike Mercer. “The event would not have taken off without the infectious enthusiasm of Geraldine Flynn’s organising skills. Take a bow all!”
Here’s another 20 photos of some of the 300 plus people who enjoyed the show on the night.
I GREW up in Boherbee Tralee (AKA The Yellow Road). My mother ran a local grocery store for more than 30 years.
Coming from this background it gave me an early and great insight into (a) dealing with the public and (b) the importance of structure and organisation in running a small business or any business for that matter.
The fresh bread was placed strategically in an easy accessible position, the fresh fruit and veg were kept away from direct sunlight, dairy products and meats were stored neatly in a refrigerated area, more long shelf-life products like tins of fruit and soup were kept in the centre aisles while items like cigarettes and sweets were often close by the cash register.
This gave good structure to the running of the shop thus reducing unnecessary stress in trying to locate whatever purchases were required.
Once the question ‘What can I get for you?’ was answered, the shopkeeper (my mother!) could move swiftly about her business thus resulting in a well-served and happy customer which in turn should be good for everyone.
Now humour me and close your eyes and using your imagination picture this well stocked shop with no one in charge for a period of two hours. Now further imagine a monkey being let loose in that said same shop.
When my mother appears on the scene she is greeted by an Armageddon-like scene. There is utter devastation, chaos and pandemonium.
The fresh ham is scattered around the cigarettes, the bread is with the sweets, the eggs are broken over the jams and there is ice-cream all over the lovely fresh fruit – You get the picture! I’m pretty sure it is one you would not wish to store in your mind for a long time.
Well I have news for you. The unaware mind is very much like that, with thoughts scattered all over the place.
Worried about things from the past or anxious about the future or indeed the reverse, anxious about the past and worried about the future for any type of chaos will do.
There is absolutely no structure and thoughts simply come and go and fly all over the place just like confetti at a wedding (or snuff at a funeral!).
This is why it is called the ‘monkey mind’ as it is as good an analogy of chaos as you are going to get.
Just like the ham, jam, eggs and ice-cream, our thoughts are all over the shop, but yet there is still one major difference – ‘Now Roger what is that?’
If you entered the shop you would immediately see the chaos and more than likely make a quick exit.
However, with the mind, remember I said that most people are (a) unaware of the chaos of their daily thoughts or (b) unaware that it is very possible to put structure on these thoughts.
If one is unaware of something then there is very little motivation to do something about it.
If you think about it – why would you even consider doing something about that which you are unaware of? No possibility of success here!
Like I have often said before – First awareness then action.
• That leads me nicely onto next week’s article – Training The Monkey Mind
TRALEE athletes excelled at the Kerry Schools Cross Country Championships on Wednesday at The Demesne, Killarney.
Tralee CBS beat competition from around the county to win the ‘Best School Award’ for boys, with Mercy Mounthawk coming in second place and Presentation Milltown 3rd.
Presentation Killarney won ‘Best Girls School’ with Mercy Mounthawk once again finishing second, joint 3rd were Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine Kenmare and Presentation Milltown.
For The Green, Mohammad Raheem was a very impressive winner of the Minor race, leading his team to 1st place.
Fergal O’Brien of CBS was an easy winner of the Junior race, with his team coming 2nd. Daire Keane ran a great race to finish 2nd in the Intermediate race, with the two Tralee CBS teams dominating to finish 1st and 2nd.
Shane Lowth was a good 2nd in the Senior race, leading the two teams to 1st and 3rd place. These teams now go on to compete at the North-Munster Championships in Limerick.
For Mercy Mounthawk, Cillian Tierney, won the senior category. Also picking up a top award was Eimear O’Sullivan, from Presentation who won the minor girls award.

MERCY Mounthawk students spent a night sleeping outside the school gym on Thursday to highlight the national issue of homelessness and to raise funds for Focus Ireland.
Continued below…
The weather was terrible with wind and rain battering the building but the students, part of the transition year Young Social Innovators Group, toughed it out.
President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, and local politician Fianna Fáil election candidate John Brassil – who was there when TraleeToday.ie turned up at the beginning of the night to take a few photos – lent their support to the event.
The students were in good spirits with some parents and teachers there to make sure they had everything they needed for the night ahead.
Later on Friday, the tired students were over in Manor West collecting funds for the homeless charity, Focus Ireland.
Student Katie Ryan described how the event went.
“The experience overall was tough, one of the most challenging experiences psychologically and physically for every member of the group. The weather – though for Ireland it may have been mild – it was still freezing and windy. It gave us all an insight into the lives of people who have no homes. Everyone was shook by the experience as to how hard it actually was but that’s what we were hoping to get out of it. It’s given us the boost we needed to keep working toward making a change.
Over in Manor, people asked us questions about how the sleep out went, why we did it, what focus Ireland was about and what their aim was as a charity. People were very supportive.
We achieved what we hoped to due to the support from the media, teachers, parents, school staff and our fellow students in and out of our YSI group.”
The group made a video of the night which can be viewed below…
OVER 300 people went to the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday night for a fantastic night of entertainment, to raise funds for Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club.
Nine couples, made up of members of the club and from Tralee Musical Society, took to the dance floor and wowed judges and audiences alike with their great performances, thanks to the expert dance teachings of Jackie O’Mahony.
MCs John Drummey and Geraldine Flynn did an exemplary job, while the judges – Orlagh Winters, Deputy Arthur J Spring, Fergus Moroney and Miriam Mulhall Nolan – had a tough task to pick the outstanding act.
The public also had their say as they voted for their favourite couple and in the end Anne Kerins and Tom Ferriter were deemed the worthy overall winners, while Recovery Haven also benefitted from the night.
Scroll down for a video of the opening routine and there’s loads of photos below (we’ll have many more tomorrow)…
