REVIEW 2015: The News From December…

Continuing our ‘Review of 2015’, here’s some of the news we brought you in December…

• THE festive season was ushered in at IT Tralee North Campus by breaking a Guinness world record at making the longest Christmas Cracker Chain.

Needing more than 798 to break the record, it was smashed with a total nearing 1,300 students, faculty and pupils from secondary schools, Presentation, CBS The Green and Mercy Mounthawk, getting involved. (click here)

• There was an application for a new Topaz petrol station on John Joe Sheehy Road adjacent to the Aldi supermarket.

Corrib Oil Company Limited, have applied for permission to construct a two storey retail/office building and a petrol filling station on the grounds of the old John Mitchels GAA pitch. It will be decided on early in the new year. (click here)

• A Prominent Tralee property, built in the 1790s, has been sold for close to the asking price of €495,000.

Castlemorris House has been bought by an Irish couple with a young family and will continue to operate as a B&B, according to Ganley Walters, the Dublin-based auctioneers handling the sale. (click here)

Mark Leen Book• We talked to well-known Tralee entertainer, Mark Leen, about his new book, ‘Viva Las Vegas’, on all things gambling-related, how he wants to help others beat the addiction and how he once lost over $17,000 in one bet in a Las Vegas casino…(click here)

• Registration for The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016 opened and will be done by way of a lottery for the first time.

For the first time in its 31 year history registration will be done by way of lottery as last year there was an unprecedented demand for one of the 11,500 places and this saw many regular supporters  left disappointed. (click here)

• After the first ever Status Red Rainfall Alert for Kerry, the flooding situation in parts of  Tralee required the services of the army.

There was severe flooding in Manor Village and Ballymullen, while other parts of the county were also badly hit. (click here and here)

• A true Rockie came home to Tralee with €37,000 in prizes after appearing on the Winning Streak programme.

Jim Naughton won €12,000 in cash and a car worth €25,000 in the popular RTE National Lottery game show. (click here)

• A Tralee woman won Journalist Of The Year Award at the Irish Magazine Awards.

Oakpark native, Maria Moynihan, won the accolade at a ceremony in Dublinfor her work with the bimonthly, ‘Irish Country Magazine’.

The Irish Magazine Awards are the ultimate accolade for the achievements of Irish magazine publishers. (click here)

• There is a proposal coming in the New Year to change the name of Kerry General Hospital to ‘University Hospital Kerry’.

While speaking at the turning of the sod at the new in-patient Palliative Care Unit at Kerry General Hospital, Minister for Diaspora, Jimmy Deenihan, said that an official announcement of the proposal to rename the hospital will come after Christmas. (click here)

• Austin Stacks secured their county senior championship status for next year after a 2-10 to 1-6 win over Laune Rangers in Lewis Road, Killarney.

It was a sad day for Laune Rangers, a club which jointly holds the most county championship title wins (12) with the Rock side, as they are now down to intermediate status after the round 3 relegation match. (click here)

• We reported that a Tralee family was fighting against time to find a home before Christmas after their home was damaged when their dishwater burst into flames and pumped noxious black smoke around the house.

Geraldine Whelan, was sitting in her living room in Lios Rua when her dishwater caught fire early in December. (click here)

• Part of a retail park in Manor East has been sold for over €3 million at private auction.

There were a number of bidders at the auction for the 10.23 acre site at Manor East held earlier the month – overseen by Sherry Fitzgerald Stephenson Crean –  and the site went for above the reserve. (click here)

• There was sad news around Kerry at the death  of well-known Kerry GAA figure, Leo Griffin.

Leo, who grew up in the Mitchels area, was a familiar face around town, but came to be known nationally when he accompanied the Kerry team of the 1970s and 80s during the glory years as their bagman. (click here)

• After what was a wash-out of a summer, Kerry experienced some beautiful weather in the autumn with Valentia observatory recording a barely believable highest temperature  of 19.5°C on November 1 – which was the warmest in the country. (click here)

• Kerry County Council submitted a detailed developmental proposal for the Denny site in Tralee which is set to cost over €3m.

The proposal – involves the demolition of the site, its interim use as an amenity area and the preparation of a master plan for its future long term development. (click here)

• A Presentation secondary school student, Leslie McCarthy, featured in a RTE Nationwide special on the historical project ‘My Adopted Soldier’.

Nationwide will broadcast two special programmes this November which focussed on a unique project involving a student from every county in Ireland who adopted a soldier who died in World War 1. (click here)

• Kerry’s unsung hero of the past number of years, Donnchadh Walsh, finally got an All-Star  on an occasion where three other Kerry footballers won awards.

Brendan Kealy was rewarded for his star shot-stopping efforts all year, corner-back Shane Enright’s solid performances were worthy of his recognition, while Anthony Maher had a great season and was deserving of his All-Star. (click here)

• We spoke to Joe Flynn from Rahoonane, who was told by doctors in August that he didn’t have long to live. But his attitude to life stayed the same as always: keep positive and keep fighting.

His story received national attention and he’s an inspiration to others. (click here)

• The Tralee teenager, who headed Stateside to a prep school earlier in August to further his basketball career, was offered a five year scholarship with a Philadelphia college.

Nineteen-year-old Cian Sullivan from Ballymac signed a letter-of-intent to play at LaSalle University after committing to the college while on a visit to the school’s Philadelphia campus. The university is a breeding ground for NBA talent. (click here)

• An Ardfert man’s company  won a Gold Award at the Bank Of Ireland Start Up Awards in Dublin.

Martin McGowan’s business, Ullcatch, won the Product Start-Up Of The Year category, mainly due to his product, the Bait Weaver, which is proving enormously popular with anglers. (click here)

• Over 530 items from Balloonagh Convent were sold off  for well in excess of €100,000.

Among the items sold were a bookcase which fetched €8,000, an oil painting for €5,200 and a table for €3,200. The convent closed at the end of September. (click here)

• We learnt a Tralee woman is off to London early next year to attend a recording of the star-studded Graham Norton Show on BBC after winning a competition for two VIP tickets.

Well known Austin Stacks woman, Mary McQuinn, entered a Supervalu Ireland Facebook Competition where participants were asked for their ‘Red Chair’ stories in order to win the tickets. (click here)

• A Tralee man seen by millions of people in a GoPro video fail in Las Vegas, wasn flown to Sin City to star in a promotional video for the famous resort.

Joe Griffin, originally from Clogherbrien, now living in Balbriggan, Dublin, had his GoPro video uploaded by his son Evan and has been seen over 6.7 million times on YouTube. (click here)

• A woman who bought her a €500,000 winning ticket in Dunnes Stores in town collected her winnings from the National Lottery offices.

The unnamed woman won the cash in the EuroMillions Plus draw on Friday, November 6.

“I can’t wait to spoil my children and grandchildren,” she said, as she collected her prize. “I plan to celebrate with my whole family this Christmas and maybe even plan a holiday to the sun.” (click here)

• In fantastic news for the town, Tralee won the top large tourism town in Ireland at the Fáilte Ireland Tourism Towns awards.

Tralee beat off neighbours Killarney and the two other nominees in the Best Large Town category to claim the prize.

It was an incredible boost to tourism and richly deserved considering the amount of effort has gone into promoting the town over the past few years. (click here)

• There was a fantastic crowd and atmosphere at BTS Fitness  for a special fight night fundraiser which raised well over €3,000.

The event was the brainchild of Akeem Molloy and his partner Katie Donoghue, who suffered a miscarriage last year and therefore decided to raise funds for the Miscarriage Association of Ireland, a charitable and completely voluntary body set up to support women and men who have been through miscarriages. Continuing our ‘Review of 2015’, here’s some of the news we brought you in October…

• Gardai in Tralee began a murder investigation following a post mortem on a 24 year old man who had been assaulted outside a house in Killeen Woods on September 30.

The deceased, Dmitry Hrynkevich, moved with his family from Russia to Ireland several years ago and lived on the outskirts of Killarney.

Two men, aged in their 20’s and 30’s arrested in connection with the investigation were both released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. (click here)

• There would be no more marches or singing on the terraces in 2015 for the Rockie faithful, as the Bishop Moynihan Cup was on the way out of Connolly Park.

Austin Stacks bowed out of the county championship with Dr Crokes advancing on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-10 in Fitzgerald Stadium, in front of a big crowd of Rockie travelling support. (click here)

• A week later it was Kerins O’Rahilly’s who exited at the hands of  a Killarney side.

The Strand Road club were on the receiving end of a first half blitz of goals from the Legion which ultimately proved the difference in Fitzgerald Stadium in the quarter-final.

James O’Donoghue netted three times in all during the game which finished 4-9 to 1-15. (click here)

• A Tralee woman was honoured by The Mercy University Hospital for her fundraising efforts for the facility.

Brenda Doody from Curraheen was among the individuals, teams, and fundraising volunteers who go the extra mile for patients and colleagues at the Hospital.

She was named The Mercy Stars Hero of the Year, recognising her for the marathon challenge she took on earlier this year following her husband Pat’s cancer journey at the Mercy. (click here)

•  There was sad news when a woman who suffered serious injuries in a road accident in the Killerisk area of town later died in hospital.

Forty-year-old Gayle McConkey from Castlewood Park was cycling near the entrance to Fortfield Estate when she was involved in a collision with a car. (click here)

• A student from Tralee was announced as one of seven recipients of the 2015 Intel Shannon Women in Technology Scholarship programme.

Former Presentation Secondary School student, Ciara McEllistrim, who is a first year at NUI Galway, benefitted from a €3,000 award for each year of the degree, as well as the provision of an Intel mentor and the opportunity to complete summer internships at the Intel Shannon facility. (click here)

• Former Kerry All-Ireland winner, Liam Hassett, joined the Kerry senior team set-up as a selector.

The news came as Eamonn Fitzmaurice announced his backroom team, where Padraig Corcoran is named as the new Trainer/Selector. Liam Hassett joined other selectors Mikey Sheehy and Diarmuid Murphy. (click here)

• There was a sense of shock in Fenit at the death of Fr. Gearoid Ó Donnchadha in a fire in the early hours of October 12.

The well-known an much-loved man was a huge figure in the Fenit community, actively promoting many projects in Fenit and beyond, including the statue of St Brendan the Navigator. (click here)

• An Oakpark native, currently based in Galway, won a world-renowned coaching accolade in mid October.

Shane Fitzgibbon was the only finalist outside of North America to reach the top ten for the ‘Coach of the Year’ accolade awarded by the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA). It was decided by public vote. (click here)

• A Tralee service station property was sold at a Dublin auction for €490,000, making €90,000 over the reserve.

The Monavalley property is at present let to Doon (Mayfly) Limited, and had a reserve of between €350,000 to €400,000 at the Allsop Auction where it was sold at the RDS on Thursday, October 22. (click here)

• There was good news for Tralee workers when Mothercare Ireland exited the interim examinership process and the Tralee store was safe from closure.

There are 10 staff employed at in the Manor Retail Park, Kerry’s only Mothercare outlet. While three out of 18 stores nationwide will close, the Tralee store will continue to trade. (click here)

• It was announced that Oakpark woman and former Tralee Town Councillor, Grace O’Donnell, had been added to the Fine Gael ticket for the next general election.

The Oakview resident will be the third Fine Gael candidate in Kerry alongside, Minister Jimmy Deenihan and Deputy Brendan Griffin. (click here)

• It was also announced that Mark Sullivan from the Ballyroe Heights Hotel was to leave  the hotel next to manage the Fels Point Hotel.

Mark had been general manager at Ballyroe for 14 years, took up the position as manager as the Fels Point Hotel as it prepared for a major revamp and rebrand in the new year. (click here)

• It was announced that the Balloonagh convent would close its doors by the end of September.

The convent had operated since 1858 and resident nuns at the convent moved to other accommodation. (click here)

• A Tralee woman decided to start a petition pushing for a bypass of Macroom which she hoped to present to the Minister for Transport.

Siobhan O’Brien, from Alderwood Road, had been making trips with an ill relative three times a week to Cork University Hospital for treatment.  The journey had become arduous for her and concerning for the health of her ill passenger. (click here)

• The new Dublin Coach Kerry express route came into effect with the creation of 30 full time jobs.

The luxury transport provider saw the launch of a new express service departing from both Tralee and Killarney on a daily basis to Limerick and Dublin. (click here)

• Planning permission has been approved for a Mosque in Killerisk, but there will be no public address system that will carry the Muslim call to prayer.

The decision to build the new mosque in Killerisk Business Park had been stalled over the issue that a public address system on the proposed 23 mitre tall minaret would be installed. (click here)

• There were great celebrations around town on a Wednesday September morning as the Junior Cert results were handed out to excited students.

One young lady who had a special reason to celebrate was Róisín Ní Churraí, a student at Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí who got 11 A grades in the exams but many student around town also excelled. (click here)

Templenoe flooding• Kerry took an awful battering in mid September with torrential rain hitting the county.

There was severe flooding in parts of the county and Templenoe looked like it was particularly badly hit, judging by a photo posted on the GAA club’s Facebook page. (click here)

• It was revealed that Star Wars actor Mark Hamill had to be rescued from a near-fatal fall on the set of Skellig Michael when he was filming on the island last year for the latest film in the Star Wars saga it has emerged.

Hamill, famous for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker, reportedly slipped while climbing steps on the island and had to be caught and rescued by a member of the Office of Public Works. (click here)

• Two working days was all it took for the business community in Tralee to achieve their target contribution figure within the overall one million euro fund to develop Austin Stack Park Tralee.

A five year All-Ireland Final ticket-scheme, costing €1,000 a year for five years, was created to encourage businesses in Tralee and the north Kerry area to help bring Austin Stack Park into the 21st century. (click here)

• A Tralee man found himself poised to win a small fortune if Kerry beat Dublin in the All-Ireland.

Ballybeggan’s David Culloty placed the the €100 accumalator bet close to 10 months previous and would have won €9,800 if Kerry won in Croke Park. However…(click here)

• Kerry’s dream of a 38th All-Ireland title died in Croke Park as a well drilled Dublin side beat a Kingdom team who just never got going.

Kerry fans left the stadium wet and miserable but there’s always next year.

• There were massive Kerry celebrations in Shelbourne Park in September as the Liam Dowling trained Ballymac Matt won the Irish Derby worth €125,000.

It was a case of third time lucky for Ballymac-based Liam, who has seen two of his dogs lose in the big race in the past two years. (click here)

• A group of Tralee aspiring rappers saw their hard work and graft recognised  after they were asked to perform as part of the opening act for NWA music legend DJ Yella at a Dublin gig in September.

Zach Buggy, Andrew (Drew) Dineen and Frank McCarthy form the hip hop group ‘TheEmpty7’, who had the privilege of opening for the famous DJ and producer in the Voodoo Lounge in Dublin. (click here)

• There was great news as Tralee retained its Gold Medal status in the national Tidy Towns Competition and has increased its points total on last year.

Tralee was one of four Kerry towns to achieve gold status along with Listowel, Killarney and Kenmare as the results were announced at a ceremony in Dublin. (click here)

• Kilmoyley gathered their 23rd Kerry senior hurling title with an emphatic victory over St Brendan’s Ardfert by 3-15 to 1-13 in Abbeydorney.

• A Tralee man collected his prize of €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus, after he bought his his lucky €12 Quick Pick ticket in Centra, Ballyduff, on Wednesday, September 16.

He won it in the draw which took place on Tuesday, September 22 and collected his prize at National Lottery offices. (click here)

• The month got off to a great start as a Tralee man  won a Gold Medal at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles.

Brendan O’Connell from Oakpark won in the 800m freestyle event. The 29 year old Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club member, from the Oakview area performed well in the 1,500 metre open water swimming event, but sadly just missed out on the medals the day before, but made up for it later. • Tralee got a new pub when Jack Mac’s opened its doors for the first time. The bar is situated at the old Baily’s Corner on Ashe Street and threw open its doors on the bank holiday weekend. (click here)

• Kerry destroyed Kildare by 27 points in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park in early August.

Seven second half goals helped equal the all-time winning margin in championship football. Ruthlessness, driven by competition for places was the catalyst for a powerful Kerry display. (click here)

• An IT Tralee lecturer saw his documentary on an Irish doctor who survived the bombing of Nagasaki, released nationally in selected cinemas.

Bob Jackson – who has been lecturing at the IT Tralee for nine years since 2006 – shot and created a film called ‘A Doctor’s Sword’ which received rave reviews. (click here)

• A stand-off involving a woman armed with a knife who barricaded herself into a shop in Tralee ended peacefully.

The woman from Cork county was taken into custody and no one was harmed during the incident. (click here)

• A Mitchels man captained Kerry to a 16th All-Ireland Junior title after they gave a masterclass of football in Croke Park to beat Mayo by 2-18 to 0-10.

Alan O’Donoghue, who had a stormer of a game for the Kingdom, lifted the cup to the cheers of the vocal Kerry fans present. (click here)

• The Blue side of town had something to shout about when Kerins O’Rahilly’s beat East Kerry on a scoreline of  2-15 to 2-9 to win the U21 County Championship final.

Goals by man of the match, Cormac Coffey and midfielder Diarmuid O’Sullivan, helped them on their way to a victory in Castleisland. (click here)

• It was a poignant moment for Dick and Eibhlín Henggeler when the new Rose Walkway in memory of their daughter Dott was officially opened in the Town Park.

• Tralee architect Shane Kenny was named the 2015 Newbridge Silverware Rose of Tralee Escort of the Year.

Shane’s fellow Rose Escorts and this year’s 32 International Roses voted for the winner before Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in the Festival Dome live on RTÉ One. (click here)

• The Meath Rose won the Rose of Tralee 2015.  Elysha Brennan, a 22 years old Bettystown native looked shocked but delighted as her name was announced by Dáithí Ó Sé on stage.

The second year medical student in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin was emotional as she told the audience how proud she was to be name this year’s winner. (click here)

•  A Tralee man completed the arduous challenge of swimming the English Channel in August.

Kristian O’Donovan, swam the channel in a more than respectable time of 13 hours and 48 minutes. (click here)

• The Republic of Ireland manager, Martin O’Neill and Chief Executive of the FAI, John Delaney, were in Mounthawk Park to officially open the Kerry District League’s new all-weather pitch.

The Ireland boss was delighted to see the progress that has been made by the Kerry District League. The development was secured with a €200,000 grant from the government. (click here)

• The Kerry senior team advanced to their 12th All-Ireland final in 18 years with a victory over old rivals Tyrone in Croke Par.

Played in the driving rain, Kerry secured a sweet four point victory over the northern side. (click here)

• A Tralee site was purchased by a the Lidl supermarket chain for a price in excess of €1m.

The former Heiton Buckley premises, accessible by Edward Street and located behind the Centrepoint building on John Joe Sheehy Road/Edward Street, was bought by the chain. (click here)

• A TRALEE architect’s building design, which scooped four national awards, was shortlisted for the ‘2015 World Architecture Festival Award’.

Louise Cotter, who is originally from the St Brendan’s Park area and now based in Cork, designed the Dún Laoghaire Lexicon Library building with her firm ‘Carr Cotter Naessens Architects’. (click here)

• IT was a proud day for John Mitchels as one of their men, Alan O’Donoghue, lifted the Munster Cup for the Kerry Juniors against Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn.

O’Donoghue, played his part as Kerry stormed to a 1-20 to 0-8 victory against the old enemy. (click here)

• In a thrilling Munster Final in Killarney, Fionn Fitzgerald proved the hero with an incredible equaliser to rescue the Kerry team.

Cork looked utterly dejected at the final whistle and were on top for most of the day. The replay, in torrential rain, was a different story and Kerry won well the day. (click here)

• We reported on a group vehemently opposed to the building of a mosque in Tralee trying to drum up support in the town and county.

PEGIDA handed out flyers and made a short video on the streets of Tralee. (click here)

• Members of Animal Help Net Kerry and the Gardaí were  involved in helping to rescue two dogs that were being kept in conditions that were described as ‘vile’ by a member of the local animal help group.

The two lurcher dogs were rescued from a derelict metal container on the Listowel Road. (click here)

• A local musician wrote, voiced and uploaded quite the epic lyrical tribute to UFC star Conor McGregor ahead of his massive bout against Chad Mendes in Las Vegas back in July.

Noel McAuliffe, from Knocknagoshel but living here in town, is obviously a massive fan of the Dublin-born fighter and in the clip described the qualities and fear that McGregor brings to the sport. (click here)

• Inspirational lady, Jackie Crowe, who went on TV last year to highlight how economic conditions are affecting Ireland’s healthcare system, died in July.

The Ballyheigue lady passed away at the age of 51. She appeared on a TV3 documentary in May, 2014 where she described her battle against a rare form of cancer, Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and the financial difficulties she found herself in after losing her job before her diagnosis. (click here)

• A Tralee man had a dream start to his horse training career when one of the world’s biggest owners purchased two of the horses he is training.

Twenty-six-year-old Michael O’Callaghan was in just his first full season with a licence when Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing and Pearl Bloodstock bought maiden winners ‘Aggression’ and ‘Letters Of Note’. (click here)

• A Tralee man pushed himself to the limits as he competed in the ‘Energia 24 Hour Race’ in Belfast on both Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18.

Tom Foley, a native of the Mitchel’s area, and an active member of the ‘Born To Run’ marathon club here in town, covered a staggering distance of 102 miles over the 24 hour period. (click here)

• It was reported that a Tralee metal band had enlisted the services of a local character and singer to help work on a short track for their upcoming album.

Black Metal band ‘Scylla’ were to work with well known local man, Christy McCarthy, on their upcoming album entitled ‘Blood Eagle’ which the band planned to start recording during the  winter. (click here)

• There was consternation at a photo of a dead cat which appeared to have been painted over by a truck line-painting  the roads.

Animal Help Net Kerry uploaded the photo, taken in the Ballyheigue area, to their Facebook page and it was met with outrage online. (click here)

• Cinemagoers at the Omniplex had their evening interrupted back on July 25 when they had to be evacuated due to suspected gas leak at the Aquadome.

Two units of Tralee Fire Brigade were called to the scene just after 9pm to Dan Spring Road where there were reports of a strong smell of gas. (click here)

• It was announced that Newton Faulkner, who has had two UK No.1 albums in the last ten years, scheduled to give a performance and workshop on their at the The Eric Roche Acoustic Guitar Sessions.

Named in memory of the late, great Tralee musician,it was scheduled to take place on August 29 in the Brandon Hotel Conference Centre. (click here)

Continuing our Review of 2015, here’s some of the news we brought you in June…

• A TRALEE woman picked up a nice cheque  after winning a Radio Kerry Bingo Jackpot.

Breda Curran from Ballinorig,  dropped into Radio Kerry to collect her Radio Bingo Jackpot cheque for €14,750. (click here)

• It was reported that the Kerry GAA fundraising venture to the US grossed $1,150,000, bringing the Kerry County Board close to the €6m needed to get the Centre of Excellence and training facility at Currans off the ground.

The final net figure (less expenses) from the golf outings and special events in New York, Chicago and Boston had not been finalised at the time, but a New York Gala event grossed $850,000 on one night alone. (click here)

• It was reported that a Tralee man who played online poker on a major online betting company’s website yesterday, ended up winning a sum believed to be in the region of €390,000. (click here)

• Heartless thieves hit a charity shop for hundreds of euro and caused hundreds more worth of damage during a break-in back in June.

The Manager at Kingdom Care Charity Shop at the Mart Buildings in Mounthawk, arrived at the shop and was greeted with the awful sight. Around €200 was taken from the till, but far more damage was  caused. (click here)

• Kerry were crowned Christy Ring champions in Junebeating Derry by 1-20 to 0-12. It was a special weekend for Kerry captain, John ‘Tweek’ Griffin, who along with walking up the steps of the Hogan Stand to collect the Christy Ring Cup, brought the chalice back home to Lixnaw for the victory celebrations on the Sunday night.

“It was fantastic to be around family, friends and teammates, it’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives,” he told TraleeToday.ie. (click here)

• A Tralee businessman was left frustrated and angry that he had been told to apply to Kerry County Council for planning permission to change the wording of a sign outside his premises, two years after making the alteration.

Tim Galvin of Gally’s Bar And Restaurant on the Castlemaine Road, changed the sign  from ‘Gally’s Bar And Restaurant’ to ‘ Gally’s Food All Day’ about two years ago, to try to pick up extra business after the opening of the Tralee bypass. (click here)

• We told you about the Tralee chef enjoying a fantastic career in Los Angeles, which has seen him feed Oscar-winning directors, supermodels, rock gods, rap moguls and NBA stars since he moved Stateside 15 years ago.

The Kennedy Cup heroes come home.

• The Kerry Under 14 soccer team received a great welcome home to Tralee last night after their Kennedy Cup heroics.

Despite the driving rain, friends and families of the youngsters gathered in Denny Street to welcome the lads after they beat Dublin and District Schoolboy League (DDSL) 1-0 in the final in Limerick, to claim the title for the first time since the competition began in 1976. (click here)

• Kerry did enough to get past an ultimately disappointing Tipperary side whose challenge was snuffed out early in the second half in their Munster SFC semi-final clash in Thurles on June 14.

A crowd of over 11,000 paid in to see the All-Ireland champions set up a meeting with the old enemy Cork in early July in Killarney. (click here)

• Over €10,000 worth of damage was caused when vandals broke into the Kerry District Grounds in Mounthawk Park.

The damage was done to machinery and was a setback to the work at the new all weather pitch which was close to completion. (click here)

• A Ballymacelligott man was elected the new Mayor of Kerry County Council at Kerry County Council.

Cllr Pat McCarthy of Fine Gael man was the second Ballymac native to be elected on June 22, as Fianna Fáil councillor, Tom McEllistrim became Mayor of Tralee Municipal District that morning. (click here)

• A Tralee Dynamos player saw his hard work and talent pay off after he signed a four year contract to join English side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sixteen year-old Rian O’Sullivan from Camp had just completed his Junior Certificate at Mercy Mounthawk, but he was off to the south coast of England. (click here)

• The Killarney Festival Of Music and Food, which was to see acts like Duran Duran and Texas take to the stage, was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the organisers’ control.

A spokeswomen for the festival at the time said: “We are devastated that the festival has been cancelled – we did everything in our power to make it happen this weekend.” (click here)

• New Kerry Rose, Julett Culloty said she was looking to the future with optimism after a tough 12 months when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

• It was also announced that the Rose of Tralee Festival will be extended to a week long Festival from 2016 onwards with 70 Rose contestants taking part and an extra night’s TV coverage.

It will mean a major boost to the local economy beyond the €12 million that the Festival already delivers. (click here)

• Former Government Minister, Pat Carey from Castlemaine, was the Grand Marshal for the Kerry Festival of Pride Campaign which attracted a colourful bunch of people from all over the county and beyond.

• Renowned beautician Mary O’Donnell spoke of how her life was changed after she was bullied online.

Speaking to 2FM’s Ryan Tubridy, the Tralee beautician told of how a mishap during a slot on RTE’s ‘Today’ show from February, went viral online. (click here)

• A Siamsa Tíre dancer performed for Prince Charles on his visit to Galway in May.

John Fitzgerald, a native of Brandon, and other dancers gave the Royal visitor a traditional Irish welcome with a sample of Irish dancing at NUI Galway. (click here)

• Like most of the country, the people of Kerry gave the nod for same-sex couples to get married as the referendum was passed.

In the Kerry North/West Limerick constituency, 55.5% voted ‘Yes’ and 44.5% voted ‘No’. (click here)

• Recovery Haven Cancer Support House Kerry  won the top prize at the Rural Innovation Awards.

The awards, sponsored by Dairymaster, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Teagasc and the Farmers Journal, took place in the Ballygarry House Hotel. (click here)

The Blasket Bar made an application to Tralee District Court to open from midnight until 2am on Easter Saturday.

• Kerry’s Allianz National League campaign came to an end with a great tussle with rivals Tyrone in Omagh which resulted in a draw.

A win would have put Kerry through to the semis but a draw secured their Division on status.

Kerry were lacklustre in the first half, but came to life in the second period where Colm Cooper made a welcome return to the Kerry side, coming on for the last ten minutes and setting up an important score for Kieran Donaghy. (click here)

• The judges decided west was best last night as the new Miss Kerry was crowned in the Killarney Plaza Hotel.

• Not long after announcing himself back on the inter-county scene, Paul Galvin, bagged himself a new job designing an exclusive range of clothing for Dunnes Stores.

Following in the footsteps of golfer, Padraig Harrington, Paul Galvin  designed a new line of clothing for Dunnes which would appear on the rails later in the year. (click here)

• Speculation was rife that British supermarket giants Iceland were to open a new store in Tralee.

The rumours were triggered after the job of Iceland Tralee Store Manager was advertised online, although there has was no official confirmation from Iceland.

A possible location touted for the new Iceland store was the Horan Centre but when contacted, Donie Horan of the Horan Centre said the rumours were “just speculation”. (click here)

• A new hotel opened in Tralee back in April.

The Ashe Hotel on Maine Street let us in for a look on April 9. Formerly The Abbey Gate Hotel, the new business created up to 50 jobs in the town. (click here)

• There was more good news on the jobs front when it was announced that Portman Travel created eight permanent new jobs at their European Centre of Excellence and announced that another eight are planned to come on stream before the end of the 2015.

Eight people were taken on through the JobsBridge programme and  received training in the company’s Portman Academy. (click here)

• It was a momentous day for Kerry hurlers when they beat Antrim to qualified for Division 1B of the National Hurling League.

The game at Parnell Park in Dublin on April 11 finished Kerry 2-16 to Antrim 1-18. (click here)

• We told you about a Mercy Mounthawk student who won a scholarship to a prestigious US prep school, a breeding ground for NBA stars.

Standing at seven feet tall, Cian Sullivan would be heading to the $50,000 a year St Andrews prep school in Rhode Island USA. Even better news was to come for the Ballymac teenager later in 2015. (click here)

• We told you about a Tralee woman who was named as the winner of a modelling competition that was held in Auckland, New Zealand.

Debbie Sugrue, originally from Fountain Court, was named as the winner of the ‘Miss Bikini South America/New Zealand’ competition and went on to compete in the world finals later in the year. (click here)

• Kerry County Council won a  top award at the inaugural Irish Tourism Industry Awards.

The local authority was a finalist in the category for Best Local Authority Tourism Innovation at the DoubleTree by Hilton Dublin and won the award. (click here)

• The new Benners Hotel opened its doors to the public back in April.

In a nice link to the past, the cafe even has the old Benners clock dating back to the early 20th century hanging over the fireplace.

Up to 30 people are working in the new venture by Der O’Sullivan of The Mall. (click here)

• More positive news emerged on the jobs front with the annoucement that JRI America were looking to entice 40 high skilled workers to fill jobs at its Software Development Centre in Tralee.

JRI America are located in the Kerry Technology Park, but also have offices in London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Singapore and New York. (Click here)

• It was revealed by Chairman of the Kerry County Board, Pat O’Sullivan, that work  on Austin Stack Park,  is set to cost between €750,000 to €800,000, according to the Chairman .

He said the GAA have half the money and he will be meeting members of Tralee Chamber Alliance and Tralee area councillors on Tuesday afternoon about fundraising for the rest of the project. CLICK HERE

• CLLR John Brassil was selected to be the Fianna Fail candidate for the Kerry constituency at the next General Election.

• A TRALEE man was just half a block away from the explosion in New York when fire engulfed two buildings causing them to collapse.

There were 19 casualties in the incident – which is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak – four serious with one person reported missing.

• TRALEE was been named in TripAdvisor’s ‘Top Ten’ destinations to visit in Ireland according to the annual Travellers’ Choice Awards.

• The first day of February saw Kerry senior footballers begin their Allianz National League campaign with a lacklustre performance against Mayo at Fitzgerald Stadium , losing 0-10 to 2-11 to the westerners.

Barry John Keane had a good day with 0-4 but Mayo were fitter and brighter on the day. (click here)

• We reported on how the Solas Digital Skills Training Centre in Monavalley played an important part in the making of a documentary, which prompted German prosecutors to open an investigation into a 93 year old woman suspected of being a former Nazi SS Guard.

The training centre supplied vital equipment and a trainee, Dylan Knapp, who proved very useful to the producers of ‘Close To Evil’. (click here)

• The month saw Kerry once again come to global attention after featuring in an 11-page spread in the  February/March 2015 issue of the of ‘National Geographic Traveler’.

As one of the most recognizable magazines worldwide, it was another big win for Kerry tourism to have ‘Ross Castle’ in Killarney featured as the cover. (click here)

• We told you about a Tralee woman who was set to run 12 marathons in eight months to raise funds for those who helped her husband through his cancer ordeal.

In summer 2014, Brenda Doody got the devastating news that her husband, Pat, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. To give back to the people who helped him, she vowed to raise funds for Mercy Hospital, Cork, by running 12 marathons in 8 months. (click here)

• We brought you the good news story about a Ballyduff man who wanted to thank two Tralee ladies for doing a good deed in town.

Murt O’Sullivan left €500 cash hanging out of an AIB ATM machine and was chased by two ladies who returned the cash to him.

• We reported on a straight-talking 90 year old mart employee, Eugene (Eugie) O’Sullivan, who is a legend in Kenmare.

A surprise 90th birthday party was thrown for the local character in Kenmare Mart where the Irish Examiner recorded fantastic a video of Eugie speaking about his  life. (click here)

• We were at the Austin Stack Clubhouse  for a reunion of  St Brendan’s Park residents which saw hundreds attend.

It took months of organising, but it as worth the effort for a night of music, song and reminiscing about growing up in the old estate. (click here)

• It was announced that Tralee is to get a major boost with an estimated €20m investment in a new advanced manufacturing facility at the Kerry Technology Park.

The plans were announced at a press conference in Dublin of the Government’s €250m Regional Action Plan For Jobs.

A new 25,000 sq ft property will be built at the Kerry Technology Park to attract a major industry, according to Minister Jimmy Deenihan. (click here)

• There was heartbreak for Austin Stacks as their amazing run in the All-Ireland Club Championship came to an end.

Austin Stacks lost by a solitary point on a rainy Sunday in Portlaoise to Slaughtneil in the semi-final, but they gave it one hell of an effort.

Kieran Donaghy and the rest of the Stacks team were disconsolate, but the hundreds of Rockie fans who travelled up showed their appreciation after the game. (click here)

• It was reported that a three-year-old Kerry child would receive an interim payment of over €2.5m after the HSE settled a High Court action in Dublin.

Skye Worthington from Cloghane was brain-damaged during her birth in Kerry General Hospital in April 2011.

She now has cerebral palsy, can only sit for a while has to be fed through a tube and can only communicate with her eyes. (click here)

• It was a terrible month on Kerry roads as two men died in accidents in north Kerry. Michael O’Sullivan from Ballyduff died on February 19 in a road accident on the Tralee-Abbeydorney road.

Six days earlier, Maurice O’Donoghue (24) from Mountcoal in Listowel died after being involved in a single vehicle crash near Kilflynn. (click here)

• There was celebrations at the Aqua Dome as they welcomed their 4,000,000th visitor through their doors.

‘Lady Luck’ was with Kate and Cian McCarthy from Milltown who got through the door at the right time to be awarded a ‘One Year Family Pass’ for two adults and three children. (click here)

• It was announced the ‘Rockumentary’ DVD on Austin Stacks amazing county and Munster final successes, won a McNamee Award. The GAA McNamee Awards are held annually to honour excellence in the area of communications, public relations and journalism CLICK HERE

• An early sign in an upturn in the economy came when the building that was once Fabric Nightclub on Princes Street was sold CLICK HERE

• Munster Rugby fans in the county received a blow when JJ Hanrahan decided to leave the province in favour of first team rugby in England at Northampton Saints CLICK HERE

• Snow fell around the town as a red weather warning was in place that shut the Tralee to Cork train line. Tralee CBS and Colaiste na Sceilige didn’t seem to mind that their match was called off because of a bit of white stuff CLICK HERE

• Former Tralee RFC, Ultan Dillane, signed a two year contract with Connacht Rugby after impressing with the province towards the end of the year CLICK HERE

• The country was warned to batten down the hatches for Storm Rachel, but it turned her bark was worse than her bite and a feared repeat of the storm of February 2013 didn’t materialize CLICK HERE

• The Tralee-based company, Altobridge was  sold by a receiver for €4million. The company, which employed 130 people internationally, went into receivership in June 2014 with the loss of 45 jobs CLICK HERE

• A wave the size of a double decker bus was recorded off the Kerry coast which was the second highest ever recorded in Irish seas CLICK HERE
